Sprite Clubs get together in Coffs Harbour.
October 4th
to 7th
2019.
Hi All,
The combined meeting between the Sprite Clubs from Queensland and NSW will happen over the October long weekend this year.
For Accommodation details please contact Alex Robertson as early as possible to book the room that you require. ([email protected] or phone 0420 858
386.)
It would be helpful to know who will arrive on the Friday afternoon, and who will
arrive at different times.
We will be hosted for some of the weekend by a local car club, C.EX club. (Coffs Ex-Servicemen’s Club) We will be doing a run with them and
visiting the garages of some members. As usual, we will have happy hours from Friday onwards, and evening meals together, and probably breakfast times too.
Cheers from Alex

Rod & Cheryl. South side meeting at Officeworks, Underwood was Mark & Jennette and
Sephora. The northside group took a tiki tour
heading from Brendale to Manly. Although certain members of the
party didn’t appreciate doing U turns in the middle of main roads, they
eventually got to Manly just a little
after the others. Joining the party were Matt & Bronwen, Mike & Anne,
Leigh & Bobbi, and Marcus.
With 15 members and 7 Spridgets, we had a great day. Good food, good prices and excellent service.

MINI CLUB DISPLAY 24TH August 2019
Although a bit chilly driving from Kallangur to Carindale, the day turned out to be beautiful. Lots of sunshine, good food and great company, and a fantastic display
of cars to see.
There were 12 Sprites/Midgets, 32 Minis, 12 Morris
Minors and 3 others on display. The Mini Club put on a great breakfast of bacon and eggs
rolls, free morning tea with some delicious cakes and slices and Steak burgers or sausages for lunch.
They also had a row of 5 Mystery boxes, each with 2 different car parts in them. People had to feel the items
and try and guess what they were. There were only 2 that got them all right, and a prize was awarded for

novice member, and a prize for “expert” member.
Trophies were awarded - Honourable Mention for a
Sprite – won by Mark Gillman - Peoples Choice Sprite – won
by Keith & Karen Gordon Also Honourable Mention for a
Morris Minor – won by Mark Gillman
Best Morris Minor, Honorable Mention for a Mini, and Peoples
Choice for a Mini were also awarded to Members of those Clubs.
The last Trophy was a Perpetual Trophy (first year of presentation) in remembrance of Dean who was
tragically killed. Mark Gillman was the winner of
this Trophy, the choice being made by Dean’s parents, for the
car that they thought Dean would like the most.
Our Club was also lucky enough to win 6 of the many
raffles, with 4 others being redrawn after some of our members had left to go home.
All in all a great day. It was good to
support the Mini Club, as they consistently support us with our
Sprite Expo. Please also consider supporting the
Morris Minor Display Day on 20th
October at Ormiston School.

Interesting article from Michael Dwyer
Although it is about a TR3 (gasp) I think it is interesting as a modern re-run of a classic old European road rally. i can't send the text through as it is copyright, but the link seems OK to use. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/classic/rallying-cry-liege-brescia-liege-classic-car-rally-diary/?WT.mc_id=e_DM1062124&WT.tsrc=email&etype=Edi_Car_New&utmsource=email&utm_medium=Edi_Car_New20190813&utm_campaign=DM1062124
The Saga of the Safety Inspection, the Report on the
Registration process.
11 AHS is now registered ! Yippee, my Sprite is now legal. However, the step of getting it registered was a bit of a palaver. The Inspection itself was no issue. The inspector then attempted to use the Safety Inspection Report app on his iPad. It seems Transport and Main Roads Dept developed the app to speed up the process. However we encountered a bug in it. It asks for: - a VIN OR - a chassis number plus a current registration. Sprites do not have VINs - these were introduced in the mid 1980s and are a 14 digit number unique to each individual vehicle sold in Australia since then. So the Sprite chassis number could not be entered and saved in the VIN field. Neither does my car have a current registration. It did 20 or more years ago when I bought it, but TMR do not keep old registrations that far back on their records. So, what to do? Luckily, the inspector called a TMR help desk, who after much explaining and being put on hold, came back with the "solution" of padding out my Sprite chassis number with trailing zeroes up to the 14 character limit. The iPad app then worked correctly, and I received the Safety Certificate by email pretty well straight away. I took it to the TMR office, produced all the paperwork, and got the car registered. Then I asked for the correct Sprite chassis number to be put in instead of the doctored VIN. After much discussion with the supervisor, I was asked to come back with a photo of the Austin chassis plate. A couple of days later, I took in a photo of the Austin chassis plate, plus my BMI Heritage Trust Factory Record Certificate. This clinched the deal, and the Sprite is now correctly recorded with its factory chassis number. In case this may happen to other classic car owners, perhaps our Historic Ass'n rep ( Nev, is that you ? ) could get the Ass'n to bring it up with the TMR contact. It would not take much to amend the app to cope.
25th August 2019 SPRITE ON
It might also pay for all British classic car owners to get a BMI Heritage Trust Factory Record Certificate. Another thing I learnt. If you want to get a 1 day permit to take a car to an inspection station, there are 2 options: - get 3rd party CTP certificate from your insurance company, with no need for a separate 1 day permit. This then becomes your CTP when the car is registered or - get a 1 day permit from TMR - they will issue the insurance cover for that 1 day in conjunction with the permit. It seems you can get the permit for more than 1 day. It might pay to double check this with TMR, the rules may change. Michael Dwyer

Gold Coast Report Wednesday, 21st August 2019
The August Dinner Meeting was held at the “Gem Hotel”,
Alberton which is on the Stapylton-Jacobs Well Road. A very professionally run Venue with fresh Staff and
competent Food! Prices are in the region of $20 per meal.
We had12.5 in Attendance which included Mark and Jeanette Gillman's wee Daughter, Sephora. Other
luminaries included Nev Mansfield...and I say “We” nervously because I am a “Newbie” who has only just
moved to Ashmore from Brisbane.
An Apology from Leigh Wood, the Gold Coast Rep, who was participating in a Car Rally that is a section of the “Shitbox Rally” in which Scott & Leona
Counsell compete.
I learned that Spridget people are pretty much the same everywhere so
there was lots of chit chat particularly about Spridgets, and a soupcon of Coming Events, and that thin skin is not advisable eg my good friend Peter Fellows
advised the ensemble that property values had taken a dive since I arrived!!

Bruce Roberts suggested the next SCCQ Gold Coast Chapter Dinner Meeting be
at the “Hope Island Tavern”, with the “Gem Hotel” being just
a touch too far to travel. It was also suggested that Gold Coast hold its Meetings on the Wednesday after the Main Brisbane Meeting to fall in line with the
Sunshine Coast Chapter (which is on the Tuesdays after Brisbane). All of this is to be ratified, AND there is the Combined Chapter Lunch at the “Breakfast Creek
Hotel” on 15 September to be taken into consideration. The next Dinner on the Gold Coast will be at the Dog & Parrot, Robina on
Wednesday 16th October.
KEEP SPRIDGET-ING, Mike Ovens
on behalf of Leigh Wood, Gold Coast Rep in absentia
Sunshine Coast Dinner
The Sunshine Coast Chapter meeting was held at the Aussie World Pub on 13.8.19. There were 16 people in attendance and we had a lovely meal.
The updated Aussie World pub is well worth a visit, it has been totally renovated and is very bright and welcoming. There are lots of areas to have a quiet drink
or meal, and bright colours have been used with good effect. It was also noted
that the chairs are very comfy, this is important for a group where the average age is 102
aving a lift was also a bonus as the folk with dodgy joints and wobbly legs did not
have to climb up the stairs. The trivia winners were Alex and Annie, Nev also had correct answers but there were mutterings about cheating so he missed the
prize. (I gave him one anyway), it was a good effort. No Sunshine Coast meeting next month as we are joining with everyone for the lunch at the
Breakfast Creek Hotel on September 15th.
