GARDENER’S MAILBAG
BY NEIL SPERRY
Dear Neil: What is the best technique for getting lantanas through the win-ter?
The morning after the fi rst hard freeze kills all of their foliage and stems, cut the plants back to about 1 inch. That small amount of stem stubble will help identify the location of the crowns should you want to plant anything else near them (pansies, bulbs, etc.) before spring. Mulch the bed with 1 to 2 inches of light mulch such as pine bark or shred-ded tree leaves. Lantanas don’t always come back. In fact, the shrubby types are more winter-hardy than the trailers, and orange and yel-low types are more depend-able than the trailing laven-der varieties. Lantanas are very late in sprouting out in the spring. It may be a cou-ple of weeks after your aver-age last killing freeze date, so be patient.
Dear Neil: I am writing on behalf of my father, who says that his 1-acre garden turns into a grass bur farm every year. He wonders if Ba-lan and Betasan are gran-ules or sprays, and if they would have an effect on his vegetables.
Those are both granular products. They’re also not intended for use in veg-etable gardens. In fact, we don’t really have a consum-er product registered for use in vegetable gardens. Pre-emergent herbicides such as these are intended to keep weed seeds from sprouting in turf. Some can be used around existing landscape shrubs and even perenni-als, but, when you’re talking about using them around young seedlings and even germinating seeds, that’s not a good plan. Mulching and very light cultivation with a mini-tiller will usual-
ly do the job as the grassburs start to sprout and grow. As a piece of advice that I have learned personally over the years about myself: when my garden got so big that I couldn’t keep the weeds out of it, it was usually because I was trying to maintain too much space. I’ve been there three or four times so far in this life, and there probably will be more. Cutting back to a more manageable size really helped me enjoy the experiences more. (That’s what has worked for me – not necessarily something your dad may want to hear.)
Dear Neil: More than 20 years ago you recommend-ed Eureka persimmons. I
bought and planted a tree, and each year it has pro-duced hundreds of fruit (this year 984!). Thought you’d enjoy knowing.
Thanks. I do enjoy hear-ing the positive sides. That’s a great variety (our best), and obviously you’ve treated it well.
Dear Neil: When should I fertilize my St. Augustine, and with what?
Apply a high-nitrogen plant food for sandy soils and an all-nitrogen fertil-izer for clays. Timing: mid-April, mid-June and early September.
Dear Neil: I have a Meyer lemon tree that was planted
in 1999. I left it in a pot for a couple of years, during which time it actually had some lemons. Now I have it in a very protected spot where I can keep it from freezing, and it has prospered (more than 5 feet tall), but no lem-ons at all. Why?
Young fruit trees often will spend much of their “energy” during their fi rst years just getting branches and roots established. Plants, like peo-ple and other animals, are not instantly reproductive the moment they begin life. Be patient, keep protecting it, and it will eventually kick back into the fruiting mode. It will need full or nearly full sunlight. For the record, that variety is actually well-
suited to large patio pots. Having it root-bound in a pot might stimulate fl ower-ing and fruiting. Keeping it portable in a container would remove any chance of a cold spell catching you (and it) unprepared.
Dear Neil: We live on a rocky outcropping. The build-er put a thin layer of topsoil over the rock when the house was fi nished. Bermuda sod was laid on top of that. However, a tree was planted too close to our driveway. In moving it, they barely made a hole in the rock and put the tree in. Will it have any prayer? How should I care

EYES The conjunctiva is a thin mucus
membrane that covers the visible part
of an eyeball and the underside of the
eyelid. This membrane protects and
lubricates the eyes. Conjunctivitis, or
pink eye, is an infl ammation of the
tissue on the surface of the eye and/
or the inside lining of the eyelid. Many
types of bacteria and viruses can
cause conjunctivitis in children. These
germs can pass from person to person
through contact with infected body
fl uids, such as eye discharge, and can
also spread on a child’s hands if he or
she rubs the infected eye. A pediatrician
should be called if a child exhibits any
signs of the infection including a pink
eye or a thick, yellowish discharge.
If you suspect your child is
developing conjunctivitis, call and
make an appointment with LOVETTE
PEDIATRICS, (940) 627-8044. Come
to 2014 Ben Merritt Drive, Suite B,
Decatur where highly trained and
caring specialists will evaluate and treat
your child based on his or her specific
health needs. Our staff may recommend
treatment and give careful instruction
on the use of any medications that may
be needed. We’re open M -Th 8am
to 5pm and F 8am to noon. Healthy
Futures Start Here. We welcome walk-
ins and will take great care of your child.
Flu season is here. Call to make an appointment to get your child
vaccinated.
P.S. Conjunctivitis in children is most often a mild infection.

for it?You didn’t mention the type of tree,
and that can actually make a differ-ence in survival. Some of Texas’ native oaks do fairly well in rocky soils. Live oaks and Shumard red oaks come to
mind fi rst. Redbuds are also tolerant. However, all trees would do much bet-ter if they had 18 to 24 (or more) inch-es of soil in which to grow. It’s probably time to visit with the builder and ask for one more piece of help.

Special occasions are made more special by the foods served. Don’t let diabetes keep you from enjoying these festive occasions. Healthy eating can be part of party menus, too. To enjoy special-occasion meals while keep-ing your blood glucose levels in check, keep the following practical tips in mind.
Use the Plate Method of portion control. When you’re fi lling your plate, use this method to help you balance the kinds and amounts of the foods you eat. To use the Plate Method, fi rst mentally divide a 9-inch plate into two halves. On one half of the plate, place two or more servings of nonstarchy vegetables, such as as-paragus, broccoli, green beans, lettuce or tomatoes. Then divide the other half of the plate into two quarters. In one quarter of the plate, place a serving of starchy vegetables such as potatoes or corn or a serving of bread, pasta or rice. In the other space, add a 3-ounce serv-ing of protein, such as meat, chicken or
fi sh. The Plate Method not only helps you estimate the right amount of food to eat, but it also allows for a variety of healthful foods.
Keep serving sizes in mind. For nonstarchy vegetables, one serving is
1⁄2 cup of cooked vegetables or 1 cup of raw vegetables. For starchy vegetables, one serving of a baked potato is a small one, no more than 3 ounces. One slice of whole wheat bread or 1⁄3 cup of rice or pasta also counts as one serving. For proteins, 3 ounces is a serving of lean meat, poultry or fi sh. Choose low- or no-fat cheeses and egg whites or egg substitutes.
Include a serving of fruit. In addition to the foods on the plate, you could eat a small piece of fruit. Also add a serv-ing of a dairy product like 8 ounces of low-fat milk or 6 ounces of low-fat yo-gurt.
The following recipe is loaded with nonstarchy vegetables. It makes a great contribution to a holiday meal.
s1 bag salad greens1 16 oz. bag of frozen green peas2 large tomatoes
1/2 cup red onion (chopped)1 bunch of broccoli (coarsely chopped
into salad size pieces)2 cups grated cheese1 small can of sliced black olivesDressing:3/4 cup light mayonnaise1/2 cup low fat sour cream1 tsp. lemon juice2 packets artifi cial sweetenerMix all the ingredients for the dress-
ing. Chill while assembling the salad. Thaw the green peas under hot water in a colander. To assemble the salad, arrange the greens in an oblong dish. Layer the peas evenly over the salad. Spread the salad dressing over the peas like icing on a cake. Sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the salad dressing. Top this with the onion, broc-coli, tomatoes and olives. Cover tightly with plastic wrap until serving. Makes 10 servings.
Nutrients per serving: calories: 197; sodium: 275 mg; carbohydrates: 20 grams; protein: 9 grams; fat: 10 grams

WISE COUNTY

I don’t like winter, but I do.
It is cold and I am easily chilled, especially my feet. I just got some new fuzzy shoes though, so hopefully I will now be able to enjoy what I like best about win-ter with warm feet. What I love about winter is the de-lightful abundance of spar-rows. Sure, we have several lovely sparrow species here in the summer (Lark Spar-row, Grasshopper Sparrow, Field Sparrow, and occasion-ally Cassin’s Sparrow), but winter is when the greatest diversity occurs.
Last month I wrote about many of the more boldly marked sparrows. Most of those are also more likely to show up in wooded, brushy
habitats or in the shrubby areas of your yard if you live in town. Now I’m going to talk about my favorites, the more subtle ones of the grasslands and fi elds. I have a lot of favorites!
Savannah Sparrows are one of the most common grassland sparrows in Wise County. It is somewhat dain-ty, with a short tail and crisp gray-brown streaking on the breast and fl anks. The head is distinctly striped, and there is usually a yellow-ish area in front of the eyes. They are variable and can range from more grayish to brownish overall. They are found all across the country, wintering in the south and breeding across the entire northern United States and Canada.
Vesper Sparrow is found
in similar fi elds and grass-lands as the Savannah Sparrow, but it has a sur-prised look to its face. That is because it has a white eye-ring and a face with blurred streaks; the most distinctive marking is a white mus-tache that curls back around the “cheek” feathers. Also, in fl ight, it has white outer tail feathers. Rarely, you can see its rufous lesser coverts (feathers at the bend of the wing), but those are usually covered by the body feath-ers.
Another common spe-cies found in thick grass or brushy areas is the Song Sparrow. It has markings that are overall similar to those of the Savannah Spar-row, but Song Sparrow is bulkier with stronger mark-ings. The breast and fl ank
streaking is thick, usually forming a spot on the breast. Its beak is less dainty than that of the Savannah Spar-row, and its tail is longer and fl ops in fl ight like a cardi-nal’s tail.
A very dainty version of the Song Sparrow is Lincoln’s Sparrow. It can be found in similar habitats but is much more common during spring and fall migration than dur-ing the winter. It is very fi nely marked, as if an artist carefully drew all its streaks with a very sharp pencil. Its beak is slender compared to the Song Sparrow, and its tail is shorter, more like the Savannah Sparrow in shape. However, both the Lincoln’s and Song Sparrows have a

By THE AMERICAN COUNSELING
ASSOCIATION
If there’s one thing most of us are not lacking, it’s opportunities to worry. From economic problems to family is-sues to our health, there’s an endless list of things that can cause worry.
Worrying about real things in our lives isn’t always a bad thing, though perhaps not a very enjoyable one. Be-ing worried performs a needed func-tion – getting us to focus on an issue and, hopefully, to take action.
But we can also suffer from need-less worry. This is worry about things that are imaginary or out of our con-trol. Such worry is harmful as it raises stress levels, yet comes from things we can do nothing about.
Excessive worry is not only unpleas-ant and stressful, but it can also lead to real health issues. Worrying stimu-lates our bodies to produce various chemicals, such as adrenaline, that cause physiological reactions, such as
muscle tension, increased blood pres-sure and higher heart rates.
The physical reaction to constant worry can result in headaches, back pain and stomach problems. There’s evidence it also affects our immune system, leaving us more vulnerable to viruses and bacteria, and perhaps even cancer, and appears to increase the risk of heart attack and strokes.
So how can you reduce worry in your life? Start by analyzing how real the source of your worrying is. If it’s some-thing over which you have control and can do something about, then channel your worry into action. Develop a plan for dealing with the cause of your wor-ry, and then carry it out.
But if your source of worry is outside your control, it will continue to cause you emotional and physical problems without allowing you a way to deal with the problem.
Your goal is to stop such needless worry before it takes control of your emotions. One way is to rechannel your
thoughts. A simple diversion, such as music, a book, talking to a friend or getting some exercise, can often help. It takes practice to refocus your thoughts away from needless worry, but it can be done.
Once the worry is under control, then think about how real the source of that worry is and whether it’s something you should ignore, rather than letting it control you.
If you fi nd that chronic worry, espe-cially over things you can’t control or infl uence, is negatively affecting your life, consider talking to a counseling professional who can offer a variety of ways to help reduce the worry in your life.

ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, December 4, 2008 11
By GARY CLAYTON
Wise Co. Extension Agent
Ken Johnson, county ex-tension agent for Tarrant County, wrote the following article regarding ag exemp-tions. With his permission, I thought it would be appro-priate to share it with you since we receive several in-quiries each year about the subject.
Owners of rural property generally have heard of the “ag exemption” whereby their property is appraised and taxed on its agricultur-al productivity value rather than its market value. There are two appraisal methods found in the Texas Tax Code. The fi rst is “Assessments of Lands Designated for Agri-cultural Use” (1-d) and the second being “Open Space Land” (1-d-1).
The agricultural-use ap-
praisal is primarily reserved for those whose occupation and sole source of income are generated by agri-cultural production as both the land and the landowner must meet specifi c criteria. The open space appraisal is the one that most people generally refer to as the “ag exemption.”
Open-space or section 1-d-1 land, requires the land, not the landowner, to qual-ify. The owner’s occupation, business and sources of in-come are irrelevant. Accord-ing to the statutes, there are three primary requirements for receiving the exemption. The land must be currently devoted principally to agri-cultural use to the degree of intensity generally accepted
in the area. The land has been devoted principally to agricultural use or produc-
tion of timber or forest products for fi ve of the preced-ing seven years, and the owner fi les a prescribed form provided by the ap-praisal offi ce with the chief appraiser before May 1 with all the necessary information to de-termine the valid-ity of the claim.
After the application is re-ceived and all relevant infor-mation reviewed, the chief appraiser must approve the application and permit the appraisal as open space, dis-approve the application and request additional informa-tion, or deny the applica-tion.
Generally speaking, some
of the agricultural enter-prises that can qualify are: planting and producing crops, raising or keeping livestock or exotic animals, devoting the land to fl ori-culture, viticulture and hor-ticulture, producing or har-vesting logs and posts for agricultural improvements and wildlife management.

grayish eyebrow and buffy (almost yel-low) mustache and sometimes have the breast streaking coalescing into a spot.
Le Conte’s Sparrows are hard to see most of the time, but if you are persis-tent and alert, you can get a good view of one. They tend to fl y up from under your feet and then drop back down into the grass to run away on the ground where you can’t see them. However, if you fi nd one that isn’t startled, you can sit and watch it eat seeds until it moves away into the grass. These tiny spar-rows are gorgeous with a rich yellow-or-ange face, gray cheek, crisply streaked fl anks (less streaking is present on the breast) and crisp reddish brown streak-ing on the back.
Grasshopper Sparrows, which are common here in the summer, rarely are found here in the winter. They are in the same genus as Le Conte’s Sparrow, and thus, have the same body shape (short tail and rather fl at head) and similar behavior. Their faces are more buffy than yellow and they lack streak-
ing as adults on the breast and fl anks.Another summer resident that sticks
around for the winter is the Field Spar-row. Unlike Grasshopper Sparrows, Field Sparrows become more common and visible during the winter. They are also found in more habitats than their summer haunts of open areas with trees and brush. In winter, they are ad-ditionally found in brushy fi elds and in town. Field Sparrows have a white eye-ring that gives them a surprised look, rather like the Vesper Sparrow. How-ever, the coloring and patterning of the Field Sparrow is much different. Its head and body are un-streaked. This species is patterned in soft gray and rufous, with a distinctive peachy-pink bill. Its tail is also longer and fl oppy like a tiny Song Sparrow.
Chipping Sparrow is fairly distinc-tive plumage-wise and has a dainty, long-tailed shape like its congener, the Field Sparrow. The beak is dark gray or dull pink. The breast and cheeks are gray and un-streaked. In winter plum-age, a dark line goes from the beak through the eye and the top of the head
is brown to reddish brown. Sometimes there is a weak, dark mustache visible. This species doesn’t seem as common to me as the Field Sparrow. I usually see them in my yard or in grassy areas interspersed with large oaks.
This wraps up our tour of the com-mon winter sparrows in Wise County. Unlike last year, they seem to be stick-ing around in good numbers this winter. So, keep your eyes peeled for all of our delightful sparrows, and you will soon be rewarded with their subtle beauty.

BIRDS AND BEYOND
If the land use changes, an additional tax equal to the difference between the open space appraisal and the market value appraisal will be assessed on the cur-rent owner for the fi ve years preceding the land-use change. So even though this statute is found in the Texas Tax Code it is imperative that careful consideration be given on future use of the property before applying for
open space appraisal. Each appraisal district has
specifi c criteria that must be met based on acceptable agricultural practices for the area, while adhering to the strict defi nitions found
within the state statute. To learn more about open space appraisal, and to determine if your property is eligible, contact the chief appraiser for the county in which the property is located.

About 25%-30% of reproductive-age U.S. women experience symptoms that are caused by rubbery non-cancerous growths that form in the walls of the uterus. These fi broids, which usually develop in women between ages 35 and 50, usually lead hundreds of thousands of women to seek treatments and procedures (including as many as 200,000 hysterectomies) annually. One surgical alternative to hysterectomy, called myomectomy, involves removing fi broids while leaving the uterus in place. Depending on the size, type, and location of the fi broid(s), this procedure may be performed through a standard abdominal incision or via less-invasive laparoscopy (in which smaller incisions and video-aided instruments are used). Since myomectomy leaves the uterus in place, fi broids may recur or adhesions (scar tissue) may form.
Your best treatment for uterine fi broids is dependant on several factors, including the location and amount of them, future child bearing plans, and the advice from your doctor. For further information about anything discussed in today’s column, call WISE OBSTETRICS &
GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008. Our offi ce is conveniently located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are welcome.
Among women undergoing myomectomy, 10%-33% require a second surgery within fi ve years.

CROSSWORD SOLUTION
DICTIONARIES FOR KIDS
— Decatur Rotary Club member
Cary Bohn, right, asks third-grade
students at Carson Elementary if
they know the longest word in the
English language. That was one of
the facts found in dictionaries given
to third-grade students at Carson
and Rann elementary schools by
the Rotary Club. Students also
received a “reader” book.
DECATUR
Aledo 22DHS standouts — Kortney Tompkins
almost outscored the Bearcats by her-self as she had a season-high 20 points. Chandler Young chalked up 11 points, while Amanda Delka had nine, Joey Redwine had seven, Andrea Rivera had six, Ciara Currin and Ebony Pena had four each, Dori Hutchins had two and Carly Robbins had one.
Bridgeport 41Saginaw 35BHS standouts — Lindsey Walker

CMS coach’s comments: I was very pleased with the hustle the girls showed. They worked hard on tran-sitioning into their press, offense and press break.
Bridgeport A 33Boyd A 27Sissie standouts — Leah Guinn
had a team-high 14 points and Haley Guinn added 12 in the win. Alex Sulli-van-Green pitched in three points and Victoria Rivera and Payton Tucker had two each.

A
new
seasonThe Northwest High School boys’ bas-ketball team is off to a great start as
it has won two of its first three games. The Texans were successful last
week in a 67-56 victory over Saginaw Boswell. Right, Ryan Russell (41)
and Rodney Nobles (50) battle for a rebound against the Pioneers. Russell was solid as he led all scores with 22
points. Below, Nobles gets defensive in securing his team’s lead.
