Autumnal GreetingsThis month I’ve chosen to include the story of a new bookshop near to us in Malvern. The Book Co-operative is run by a dedicated group of local people who want to give us a shopping experience that’s much more than a click on a website. There’s the chance to actually pick up a book and see what it offers, comfy sofas to sit back on and browse, as well as a cafe. The shop hosts regular events and readings. It’s a lovely place to spend some time and the perfect example of why it pays to ‘shop local’!

And don’t forget to enter our competition to win tickets to the Theatre on page 44. Every month we can give away two pairs!

Have a sunny October,

On 8th & 9th November Malvern plays host to its first ever Festival of Innovation. One of the organisers, Adrian Burden says our town already has a proud tradition of innovation which has influenced the world. Malvern has played host to numerous innovations over the years, and not all of them were technology-based. Holywell Spring at Malvern Wells was the source of the first bottled water in the UK; today Britain’s bottled water industry is estimated to be worth 1.5 billion pounds! Water was the source for another local innovation. James Gulley was an entrepreneur who saw the appeal for offering a water cure to the rich, famous and ill in the mid 1800s. This established Malvern as a key visitor destination, bringing in wealth from London and funding much of the Victorian infrastructure that is still part of our town today. In education too, we’ve led the way. The Elms School in Colwall is one of the oldest preparatory schools in the UK which paved the way for a paradigm change in children’s education and ultimately the private school system. Malvern continues to be a leader in the private education sector, attracting students from around the world. For most people though, innovation is associated with science, technology and invention. Thanks to Malvern’s heritage as a key Ministry of Defence research establishment, the town has a long list of technical innovations to its name. Some of the most famous include radar, liquid crystals for displays, and touch screens. Today the innovation continues at QinetiQ, on the Malvern Hills Science Park, at the Wyche Innovation Centre, and at the

Enigma Business Park and surrounding industrial estates. Malvern is also a Transition Town with people innovating for sustainability and an improved environment; the Colwall Car Club being one example. To celebrate this history and to look forward to many more years of good ideas, Malvern Theatres and Malvern College will play host to the Malvern Festival of Innovation on the 8th and 9th November. Several high profile speakers have agreed to participate, and symposia will cover innovation in cyber security, digital media, materials and devices, as well as sustainability and the environment. There will be an exhibition of companies at the cutting edge of technology and organisations that help them to succeed. There will also be a business symposium running in parallel to the other sessions, to help guide entrepreneurs and businesses through the process of starting and growing an innovative business. During this symposium, there will also be a chance for entrepreneurs to give an elevator pitch to a panel of finance and investment experts. With generous support from sponsors, including several local companies and organisations, the event is free to attend. Members of the public and business professionals alike are encouraged to tour the exhibition and register to join the themed symposia. There will also be a formal dinner on the evening of Thursday 8th November at Malvern College.

Why did you begin this club?We began two years ago after a new sports hall was built at the Downs Malvern College Prep School. Together with friends I was aware that this was an opportunity to provide an activity for local people and, happily, the school was supportive of our plans. I didn’t have any expertise in table tennis; though like many people I had played at school and on holiday with the children I had no other experience. Our club welcomes players of all abilities.

How many members do you have?We have around thirty members and meet on Tuesday evenings with a variable attendance.

On a typical night we run three tables. Players can turn up and play for as long or as little as they like. We mostly play doubles with occasional singles. At the start a majority of the members were retired but the age range has now altered with the most enthusiastic members being from the younger set. We have a couple of teenage members and would welcome more. It has been good to see the club develop.

Can people just come along and try it?It’s possible we might benefit from the ‘Olympic Effect’ with young people who saw table tennis at the London Games. We would be delighted if anybody reading this would come along to the club one evening and see if they enjoy it with no obligation to

All About... the Colwall Table Tennis Club

Colwall Village Table Tennis Club is on the lookout for new members. Its founder, Chris Flower, tells us more.

Colwall Village Table Tennis Club meets on Tuesday evenings in the autumn and winter school terms between 6.30 and 8.30pm. It meets at the Sports Centre of the Downs Malvern College Prep School. For more information please contact Lawrence Baker on 01684 540725 or by e mail at [email protected]

join in the first instance. We are a friendly club with a relaxed atmosphere in which everyone helps out.

Do you have any plans to expand?Currently we do not play in any leagues but a time may come when that happens. When I started the club I simply acted as a catalyst to get it going. Obviously we would like to see the club grow and become more successful. Lawrence Baker takes over the running of the club from the end of the year and how it develops in the future will be determined by him and fellow members.

Autumn is in full swing, the trees are changing colour and nature is storing up its resources for the winter ahead.Herefordshire has so many beautiful woodlands full of native trees that we are spoiled for choice.

Planting trees always gives me great pleasure. I feel as though I am leaving a legacy to future generations to enjoy as well as providing a habitat for a multitude of creatures.

About fifteen years ago I was asked to plant a parkland for a large house. This was an amazing opportunity to shape a huge landscape (I felt like Capability Bridget!) with Lime avenues, Mulberry trees, Oaks, Birch, Maples, Chestnut and Beech to mention only a few. After several years I drove past the area and realised the magnitude of the landscape I had created!

We can all do this on a smaller scale by planting a native hedge instead of putting up panel fencing, by planting fruit trees, small ornamental trees and by creating habitats that not only enhance our garden but link it up with the wider landscape. Planting trees and hedges can help connect wildlife habitats from gardens to the surrounding countryside by creating wildlife corridors for migrating species.

If you do not have a garden you can help plant trees by volunteering with local wildlife, woodland and conservation groups. There are also free and reduced-cost tree saplings being given out by the Woodland Trust as part of its ‘Woodland Creation’ manifesto, while the Royal Horticultural Society are organising a dig together day in November to encourage community tree planting.

Garden Jobs for AutumnPlant Perennials, bulbs and winter bedding. The soil is perfect for planting at this time of year with plant roots enjoying the moist warm soil.

Begin clearing spent plants, dead or dying leaves, and have a general tidy in the garden to prevent pest and diseases overwintering. Leave seed heads for the birds. Lift and harvest maincrop potatoes. Plant sets of onions. Plant trees, hedging and shrubs. If your soil is heavy, dig it over to allow time for weathering over winter to break it down and improve its structure.

This wonderful poem by John Keats says it all!

To AutumnSeason of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load and bless With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run; To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees, And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core; To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells With a sweet kernel; to set budding more, And still more, later flowers for the bees, Until they think warm days will never cease, For summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store? Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find Thee sitting careless on a granary floor, Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind; Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep, Drows’d with the fume of poppies, while thy hook Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers: And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep Steady thy laden head across a brook; Or by a cyder-press, with patient look, Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.

Where are the songs of spring? Ay, Where are they? Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,— While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day, And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue; Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn Among the river sallows, borne aloft Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies; And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn; Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft; And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

Has opening and running a new book shop been hard work?It all started when we saw that Beacon Books was closing. As a group of friends we couldn’t bear the thought of a town like Malvern being without a bookshop, so we decided to set up our own! During months of meetings at which we drank lots of wine and ate lots of cake a plan gradually evolved. We found our lovely premises just before Christmas and then it was all systems go. The weeks leading up to the opening day were hard work but a huge amount of fun. Determined to keep costs down we seized upon the chance to rescue some shelves from the County’s archaeology department before their move to the Hive. We underestimated the many hours that it took to paint them and there were several late night painting sessions. We were fortunate to find a local craftsman who took our half-formed ideas and came up with a purpose-built counter and serving area. Then came the training on the till, coffee machine and computer system, quite a challenge for some of us! There were a few nerve-wracking moments when the stock didn’t arrive until the day before the opening but somehow it all came together in the nick of time.

What kinds of books do you sell? Our stock is entirely new books from the latest prize winners to traditional classics. We hold an

extensive range of non-fiction titles and books by local authors. Our colourful collection of children’s picture books is very popular and we have a comprehensive range for older children and teenagers. We have a very good ordering service with most titles arriving in the shop within 24 hours of being requested.

In an era when more and more books are sold online, or in electronic form, what do you offer that online retailers don’t?We are very aware that this can be a difficult time for independent booksellers but we have been delighted that so many customers, young and old, still enjoy real books as well as electronic text. Also, many Malvern residents seem to be very keen to support independent retailers and keep the character of the town. Our customers are appreciative of the fact that we also have an excellent ordering service with most books arriving within 24 hours (no delivery charge), a better deal than some large online retailers! As well as selling books we are also keen to develop as a centre for literary related activities and we offer a programme of events and activities. So far these have included book signings, talks from local authors, guided walks and discussion and reading groups.

You can find Malvern Book Co-op in St Ann’s Road, Great Malvern.

Or for more information visit their website:

www.malvernbook.coop

What does the ‘Co-op’ part of your name mean?We launched a share issue giving members of the public the opportunity to become shareholders and thus become members of the cooperative. The money raised in this way has funded the initial start-up costs of the business. Members are able to vote on decisions made about the running of the shop and are entitled to a share of any profits made. Having members means that we benefit from a wide range of enthusiasm and ideas which all contribute to making the bookshop the vibrant and dynamic place that it is. Obviously you do not need to be a member to use the shop which is in all other respects exactly the same as any other business.

Tell us about the caféWe can seat approximately 12 people in the café area. We serve a range of cold drinks, ice creams and delicious home-made cakes. We offer a variety of hot drinks including coffee from our coffee machine. All our products are fairtrade where possible. Energy Efficiency

With energy costs set to rise again, it’s important to get the most out of your windows and choose double-glazing that will really save you energy and money, long into the future.Window technology has improved dramatically over recent years. Since 2010 all new double glazed windows must achieve either an A, B or C energy efficiency rating* and our range of timber and uPVC windows deliver every time.

Timber or uPVC?Home-owners often select timber windows and doors because of tradition or because the aesthetics of a timber window suits the period of their property. But what if there is a window that combines the benefits of both … the beautiful lines and features of a timber window, with the durability, ease of maintenance and thermal efficiency of a uPVC window? We’d like to introduce the Residence 9 –‘the first window designed specifically to authentically replicate a timber window’- perfect for period properties and conservation areas.

Tradition with additional benefits …• No re-painting or staining• No expensive and laborious maintenance programmes• Looks like timber – feels like timber• Less expensive than hardwood• Choice of natural or painted timber effect finishes• Highly secure – can be to Secured by Design• Thermally efficient – 0.8 ‘U’ value achievable

Gary Williams, a Worcestershire kitchen designer with more than 26 years of experience in the industry, finally brings his new business home to Malvern. With his wife Jane, Gary has launched The Malvern Kitchen Studio Ltd. in Barnards Green, Malvern on the site of the former Toy Library, on the Six Ways Trading Estate. It is a lifelong dream finally fulfilled!Having lived in Malvern for nearly 14 years, Gary was keen to bring his designs home and establish a new and innovative design studio at the foot of the Hills. The showroom, now fully open, brings together a mix of both contemporary and traditional style kitchens in several design bays, each one named after a hill or area in Malvern. One bay, The Beacon, even includes working appliances, such as an induction hob, ovens, fridge freezer, coffee machine, dishwasher and hot water tap. All of which enables the customer to take advantage of free refreshments on tap. “Many other showrooms can be quite bland and

uninviting. I’ve always thought that a kitchen studio should give you a real feel for what your new kitchen could actually feel like in terms of all your senses!” Gary said. Pop in and smell the coffee!Along with a children’s play kitchen to keep the little ones amused, plenty of free literature and unlimited free parking in front of the studio, Gary and his wife Jane hope to help you realize your dream kitchen in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Gary also offers a free quotation service using the latest CAD system and is more than happy to visit you in your own home to discuss your kitchen needs and wants.

Visit The Malvern Kitchen Studio daily between 9-5 or Saturdays 10-4 for a chat and a cuppa! Make a note of their Open Weekend in October 20th/21st.

All About... malvernhills.com

In case you haven’t found it yet, our magazine has an online presence, where you’ll find regularly updated features as well as an ever-growing list of ‘What’s On’ listings, giving up to the minute information on a wealth of local things to see and do. There’s also an online business directory which can prove very useful if you’re searching for a particular service or tradesman.

What can we read about this month? The Autumn in Malvern Festival has become an annual event, with music, poetry and a diverse array of arts throughout most of October. There are performances by renowned musicians, talks by well known poets, writers, film makers as well as exhibitions. Events happen around Malvern and beyond, many are free. Do take a look at the details online, it continues until late in the month.

Christmas is still many weeks away, but there are dates which are worth putting in your diary or on your calendar now. From the town centre lights switch-on in Malvern, to local fairs and musical events, you’ll be able to read more and plan ahead by logging on to our website. Details are regularly updated, so its worth checking in more often.

What else is there, apart from events? Our website exists to highlight the positive aspects of life in our area. Malvern has its own Food Bank to help people who are struggling to make ends meet. This is run by a dedicated group of people at the Lyttelton Well who always welcome donations of tinned and dry food plus toiletries. People who might need help are referred to the Food Bank by Social Services, Citizens Advice

and other bodies, making sure the donations go to people who genuinely need them. They tell us the need is ongoing and they’re using Harvest Festival celebrations in local churches to help with donations. If you think you can help, details are on our website.

Finally...The website exists as a community resorce, so please make full use of it! If you are involved in a local group that is not yet included, feel free to contact us, as your group and its events and activities can be listed at no cost. If you’re a more advanced online user, you can follow us via Facebook, and on Twitter www.twitter.com/allaboutmalvern

Malvern artist Tia Lambert returns to iapetus gallery this October with a brand new exhibition, Through the Long Grass. Her fifth exhibition at the Great Malvern gallery, the show will feature a new collection of flowing watercolours and bolder oil paintings that have taken the artist into new and unfamiliar territory.

Oil paintings represent a new direction for Tia, and are unlike anything her followers will have seen before, with stronger, bolder colours and a feeling that one could almost step into the scene. Alongside these works will be 20 new watercolours, in the spontaneous style for which she has become renowned, each representing a different view through the grasses and wildflowers towards the Malvern Hills.

As part of the exhibition, iapetus gallery will host an intimate, informal evening talk and demonstration with Tia Lambert on Monday 9th October for a limited number of guests. Please

contact the gallery for details.

An artist’s calendar, entitled ‘A Year in Malvern’, will return by popular demand for 2013 and will be available at the exhibition, taking us through the seasons with twelve beautiful pieces.

About Tia Lambert

Tia studied Fine Art, followed by a diploma at the Royal Academy Schools, Piccadilly. She now lives and works in Malvern, and teaches painting and drawing at South Worcestershire College. When creating her watercolours, Tia works outdoors, directly from the landscapes around her, while her oil paintings ground her to the studio.

About iapetus gallery

iapetus is a contemporary showcase for high quality, handmade jewellery, gifts, home accessories and artworks, and is run by a friendly and knowledgeable team.

What a difference a year makesIn early October, just one year after The Malvern Event Organiser shop opened, it is moving to larger premises in Church Walk and expanding its range of products and services. With a background in tourism and charity fundraising owner Sarah Grout is keen to support community events. ”The Malvern Event Organiser aims to be a one-stop shop for the amateur event and party planner, whether for charity, business or leisure. By offering a range of party supplies, our own event programme, links to services, a box office for even the smallest of events and a meeting room we hope to be regarded as the community event organiser’s friend.”The Church Walk shop already boasts products and services as diverse as helium balloon decoration, fancy dress, party tableware, international flags, and a loot bag zone for children’s parties but is introducing further products. Sarah said “We are delighted to announce our collaboration with Cake Woman who will be demonstrating and supplying her amazing celebration cakes directly from the new shop.”

Malvern Theatres Autumn Season Continued

Theatre News

Malvern Theatres will present an exciting line-up of plays, music and dance this coming November. The month begins with Alan Ayckbourn’s Haunting Julia, which stars Duncan Preston and Richard O’Callaghan and a week later Gwen Taylor and Don Warrington star in the West end and Broadway production of Alfred Uhry’s Driving Miss Daisy. Then on November 12 Penelope Keith returns to the Malvern Stage in Keith Waterhouse’s poignant comedy Good Grief and on November 26th the sell-out West End hit The Ladykillers comes to town.

One-night drama includes Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage in a new translation by Lee Hall and no contemporary dance fan should miss the new work by David Hughes Dance.

Classical Music lovers will look forward to Stephanie Gonley and the English Chamber

Orchestra performing Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending alongside music by Mozart and Dvorak. The month will also see appearances by John Williams, who joins John Etheridge for an eclectic evening of guitar duos and there’s live opera from English Touring Opera, who bring Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece Albert Herring to the stage.

Also don’t miss this month’s illustrated lectures: the first by explorer Felicity Aston, who walked nearly 2000km across Antarctica; the second by broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby who gives a talk to mark the 70th anniversary of the battle of El Alamein.

For details of all these shows and more, or for a full colour brochure detailing all of the Autumn shows, please call the theatre box office on 01684 892277 or view the online version at malvern-theatres.co.uk.

For their October production, Colwall Players are returning to the work of the grand master of thought-provoking comedy. The Players’ successful revival three years ago of Ayckbourn’s classic 60’s comedy, BEDROOM FARCE, demonstrated this author’s continuing ability both to attract and to entertain audiences, with plays that are always amusing and provocative.

The Players are currently rehearsing Ayckbourn’s smash hit from the 1970s, TABLE MANNERS. This is the first of the trio of plays known as THE NORMAN CONQUESTS, which all follow the efforts of the hapless hero Norman, as he struggles for success and fulfilment in love and life, over a disastrous week-end of squabbling, eating, drinking and fondling.

The very successful revival of the three

plays at London’s Old Vic Theatre in 2008 proved that they have lost none of their power to amuse and to provoke. Michael Billington in The Guardian described the plays as still being ‘--explosively funny’. Charles Spencer of the Daily Telegraph reminded us of the plays‘ ‘---clever construction , surprising comedy, and exposure of hidden sadness’. Fiona Mountford in the London Evening Standard particularly recommends TABLE MANNERS as being ‘---the funniest and most illuminating‘ of the three plays.
