4 years old! How time flies...Do you remember the first edition? You might not have received it as we delivered it to less households back then - we first had to find you all! I remember it like yesterday and have enjoyed making every edition since. I feel privileged to live in such a beautiful area, with so much going on that it fills a magazine time after time.

Looking back gives me fond memories of working with great people running local groups, businesses and providing services. And I look to the future with great excitement of what is to come! Some changes, some expansion, new stories to tell, new events to be organised and new people to interview. Can’t wait!

Enjoy the read - I hope it gives you plenty of ideas on how to enjoy all things local and a bit of hope that Spring is around the corner.

Main feature

Three special talks are being held in Colwall during March on topical issues. The speakers have been invited as part of Colwall’s Sunday Lent series. Here, the Reverend Melanie Horton tells us more.

Women Bishops! Gay marriage! Gay Adoption! The church has got a great deal of press lately. If you only read coverage from the popular press you could be forgiven for thinking that Christians’ only concerns were with sexual morality and gender, and they were still struggling to come to terms with the nineteenth century, never mind the twentyfirst.

Yet nothing could be further from the truth. Historically Christians have been deeply involved in the reform of education, in prisons, in the abolition of slavery and more recently in spear-heading food banks, urban regeneration and debt counselling. Christian faith has much light to shed on the real issues affecting modern life and Christians are often at the forefront of social change and need.

Christians Together in Colwall was keen to show a different side to Christian faith in action, to highlight the way that faith has much to say, and more importantly do, about the profound issues affecting modern society. This year’s series of talks with some wonderful and high profile speakers was intended to focus on some of these issues, to explore them in an intelligent and informed way and to reflect on our responses.

Everyone is very welcome and hopefully they will offer us an opportunity for lively debate and discussion as well as offering thought provoking reflections.

LeadingThinkers

All talks take place at 6pm at Colwall Village Hall on Mill Lane (postcode for satnav users: WR13 6EQ) Everybody is welcome to attend and no booking is required. Tea and coffee is available at the end of every talk. There is no fee to attend but there will be an opportunity to make a donation.

THE TALKS

Sunday 3rd March: ‘The Environment’ by Ruth Valerio, who is an academic, community activist, eco-warrior, author, practitioner, veg grower and pig keeper rolled into one. She will touch on justice, the environment and lifestyle issues during her talk.

Sunday 10th March: ‘A Voice for the Voiceless’, by Baroness Caroline Cox, who trained as a nurse but after studying sociology in the 1960s she pursued a career in academia and subsequently in politics. She is a tireless advocate for international human rights and visits the most forgotten people in the world, often in highly dangerous conditions, to carry their stories of abuse and persecution back to the west. She has been under fire many times while taking aid to war victims in Armenia, Sudan and Indonesia.

Sunday 17th March: ‘Can a nation of many faiths & non hold together?’ by Canon Dr. Alan Billings, who is known as a regular contributor to Radio 4’s ‘Thought for the Day’. He has been a parish priest in inner-city and rural parishes, and an academic. He has served as a faith adviser to the government and currently serves on the Big Lottery Fund England Committee. He is the author of various books including “God and Community Cohesion”, “Secular Lives, Sacred Hearts: the role of the church in a time of no religion”, “Making God Possible” and “Lost Church: Why we must find it again”.

When did the group start and how? There was a man called Peter Garnett who wrote a local history book called ‘Portrait of Wellington Heath’. Sadly Peter died in 2006, and left an archive of village history. A small group of local people wanted to make sure this was properly stored, catalogued and made available to others who might be interested in researching the village’s history. There are six or seven of us in all carrying out this work.

Is there anything surprising in the archive? As well as a lot of interesting photos, there are maps and other documents, but perhaps the most unique part is a survey. It was conducted by the Women’s Institute and paints a picture of how life was in Wellington Heath in the 1950s. The differences between then and now are fascinating and show how much has changed, even though its an era still within living memory.

Going further back in time, does it paint a picture of how the village began?Although we have one or two very old houses, the village began to develop in the late 1700s when quarrymen, and later navvies from the railway and canal, built cottages with squatters’ rights on common land. They favoured the land because it was sheltered, south-facing and had a good water supply. The squatters also gave their names to several of the local roads, including Jack’s Lane and Floyd’s Lane. They were allowed to purchase the freehold on the plots for a nominal sum, so that when the common land was enclosed between 1813 and 1816, they could stay.

All About...

Wellington Heath

The fascinating history of Wellington Heath has been gathered together in an archive, including photographs and reminiscences of village life. Anne Abbotts is a member of the Archive Group and tells us more.

If you’d like more information on the Archive Group or any of the projects mentioned above, please contact Anne Abbotts on (01531) 632439 or by email, [email protected]

What will you do with the archive? The materials in the archive have been sorted and we have a place in the Memorial Hall to store it. We’re now busy making arrangements so that people can view it. Our group doesn’t organise talks like the Village Society in Colwall, but we have two projects under way which will bring our local history alive. The first is a project to match the old photos with the views today, ‘then and now’ photographs of the same places, which will feature in an exhibition later this year. Secondly, we are planning to record the oral history of the village, talking to people who have lived her for most or all of their lives. Peter Garnett’s original book has some reminiscences but we’d like to add to that, and physically record people’s stories.

Are other projects in the pipeline?I’ve carried out a lot of research into my family’s history, and I would like to extend that work to look into the lives of the men from the village who died in the two world wars. The original village hall was built in their memory, and our current building still has a board with their names inscribed on it. I’m sure it will be interesting to find out more about who they were.

‘A Different Drum’ can be challenging and emotionally powerful, but also full of love and hope. It comes to Colwall on Wednesday 10th April at 7.30pm, in the theatre at the Elms School. Tickets cost £10 and are available from the office of John Goodwin Estate Agents in Colwall, or by calling the Riding Lights box office on 01904 613000.

Entertainment

a different drum

Leslie Hitchen from Colwall decided to invite the production company to perform in our area after hearing about them. ‘Last summer a relative saw their performance about the origins of the Olympics and said it was absolutely hilarious!’ she says. ‘I wanted to bring them to our area, so I costed it out and talked to the Rector who suggested asking the Elms School and they very kindly offered us use of their theatre’. That’s now booked and the show is set for April 10th. If any profit is made from the evening it will go towards the running of the church in Colwall. ‘I think it will be a great evening’ says Leslie, ‘everybody I speak to who has seen them says they are brilliant and that they will be coming to see them again.’

The play, ‘A Different Drum’ begins in the Peak District village of Eyam more than 300 years ago, picking up the stories of men and women

who dare to break the boundaries of self-interest. It takes us on a journey around the world to Uganda, El Salvador and Algeria, telling the stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, with seamless changes of set and character. Staged ‘in the round’, the show is very engaging, with lots of life, colour and music. ‘A Different Drum’ imagines how different the world could be if we responded unswervingly to the golden rule ‘Do unto others as you would have them do to you.’

The production is touring nationally and takes them as far north as Inverness in Scotland, to Leeds, London and towns and cities across England and Wales. Its opening evening was a sell-out and received a standing ovation from the audience. Those attending performances have described it as an exhilarating and uplifting show.

A professional theatre company brings a new production to Colwall in April. ‘A Different Drum’ tells the story of the village of Eyam in the Peak District, from the seventeenth century until modern times. The members of The Riding Lights Theatre Company promise a highly entertaining night out.

Feature

Green Fingers

There are a delightful selection of early bulbs everywhere and buds are ready to burst into life. This explosion of energy is contagious, so use those magnetic vibes and get motivated into action. This month is packed with so many jobs to do in the garden that it is difficult to know where to start. As the weather has been so wet I have found that I never got around to weeding and mulching borders this Autumn. It is always a good idea to mulch borders when the soil has warmed up, so don’t be temped to ‘catch up’, wait until April and do it then.

There are many useful seasonal jobs to be getting on with and here are some ideas. When you are tidying the weeds, lift and divide summer herbaceous perennials such as Geum, Geraniums, Persicaria and Phlox.

Always try to keep on top of weeds by starting hoeing as soon as they emerge.

In an Ornamental Garden, coppice cornus and salix back hard to stimulate colourful new stems for next winter. Cut back and remove dead parts of ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus. Prune roses and cut back Lavender to basal

shoots. Prune Hydrangea paniculata cultivars, cutting off spent flower heads back to a strong pair of buds. Plant late flowering herbaceous perennials such as Asters, Helenium and Rudebeckia.

Sow seeds of biennial and Annual plants such as Foxglove, Calendula, Hollyhock and Cosmos Cornflowers.

March is also a good time to plant Evergreen shrubs, trees and hedging.

In the Kitchen Garden, plant onion sets and shallots. Sow cucumbers, sweet peppers, aubergine and tomatoes on a windowsill indoors or in a heated propagator. Sow lettuce, rocket, salad greens, leeks, parsnips, early carrots, broad beans and peas direct into the ground as soil begins to warm up.

When you have finished all these jobs you deserve a nice sit down with a cuppa and large piece of cake!

Don’t sit for long though as its all happening out there!

Its been a long, cold winter, but down at Caves Folly Bridget is looking forward to the arrival of Spring.

Flicks in the Sticks brings big-screen films, classics and blockbusters to village halls across Herefordshire, and they’re bringing a number of films to Colwall Village Hall over the next three months.

The project describes itself as the first and biggest film touring scheme in Europe, showing nearly 700 films a year and partnering with 90 or more communities. They use the latest in digital technology to take films to local venues throughout Shropshire and Herefordshire.

Coming to Colwall:

Friday 22nd March is Skyfall (12A), the latest Bond film starring Daniel Craig. Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Friday 26th April is Hugo (U), a fantastic family adventure film by the director Martin Scorsese. Hugo is an orphan, clock keeper, and thief living in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. When his world suddenly interlocks with an eccentric, bookish girl and a bitter old man who runs a toy booth, Hugo’s undercover life and his most precious secret are put in jeopardy. A tender and spellbinding mystery.

Friday 31st May is Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (12A), starring Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt &

Flicks in the Sticks

Kristin Scott Thomas. A visionary sheik dreams of bringing the peaceful pastime of salmon fishing to the not so fish-friendly desert. He instructs his representative to spare no expense in turning his dream into reality. This extraordinary feat requires the involvement of Britain’s leading fisheries expert who thinks the project is absurd and unachievable.

Performances start at 7.30pm, and cost £4 for an adult, while those aged 15 and under cost £2.50. Ice Creams and wine will be available!
