These Islands are remote and that’s
part of the appeal for artists who
make their home here. • • The natu-
ral beauty of this place inspires all kinds
of art — from traditional and contempo-
rary Haida carving and weaving, to post-
modern quilting, painting and pottery.
• • Unlike other studio tours concentrated
over a week or weekend, art route runs
year-round. Because of this extended
commitment, some artists prefer visi-
tors to call ahead while others maintain
regular hours during the entire season.
Please, don’t be shy about contacting
artists or visiting homes and studios
during posted hours. • • The economy
of the Islands is changing. There is now
less emphasis on resource extraction by
outside interests and more locally driven
solutions. The arts play a large role in this
shift and by putting visitors in contact
with artists, art route contributes to the
livelihoods of artists and business own-
ers. Welcome to these shining Islands
and enjoy art route 12.

Located on the northern shores
of Moresby Island, Sandspit is
the arrival point for Air Canada
flights and connects to Graham Island
by a small vehicle ferry. • • Willows
Golf Course offers a scenic course.
• • Sandspit is a hot bed for fishing,
especially during the late runs of
Coho in September and
October, and offers an array of camp-
ing and hiking opportunities. Whale
watching, birding and kayaking are all
popular activities in the area.

is alive with arts, culture and outdoor
activities. • • With just over 1000
residents, the Village of Queen
Charlotte is the Islands’ newest
municipality — incorporating in 2005.
• • The community has many active
official and ad hoc art groups. Events
are advertised on notices boards so
keep a look out. • • Queen Charlotte
has all the amenities a traveler will
need including a wide variety of
accommodation, restaurants and
an active visitor information centre.

A thriving village of over 800
residents, Skidegate lies on
the shores of Rooney Bay
at the south end of Graham Island.
• • There are many artists working
throughout the village — watch for
signs — and you can drop into the
community carving shed located
at the east end of the village. • • At
the Haida Heritage Centre at Kaay
Llnagaay visitors can experience the
past and the present, and view six
monumental totem poles that were
designed, carved and raised during
the first phase of the heritage centre
project. Guided tours of the Centre
and poles are a highlight of any visit
to these Islands.

Tlell is a rural community located
midway up the east coast of
Graham Island and is the place
locals gather each year for the Edge
of the World Music Festival and Tlell
Fall Fair. • • In addition to these two
big Island events there are numerous
natural sites and outdoor activities to
enjoy. The many well-marked hiking
trails will take you through a variety
of landscapes along the coast. The
miles of beaches, the Tlell River and
the forest-river walk to the Pesuta

Masset is the gateway to
Naikoon Provincial Park.
Closer to town, the Delkatla Wildlife
Sanctuary attracts many migrating
birds and visitors throughout the year
— it’s a birdwatchers paradise with
viewing platforms and walking paths. • •
Throughout town there are many sculp-
tures, fashioned at the annual chainsaw
sculpture competition, now adorning
storefronts, homes and parks. • • If you
drive out to Naikoon Provincial Park,
along the way you will pass through
the Tow Hill Road community, and see
old growth forests, stretches of sandy
beach with high surf and vistas all the
way to the Alaskan panhandle. Also
along this stretch are B&Bs, cabin
rentals in forest, river and beach set-
tings and of course a couple of cafés.

Old Massett is located on a
point of land with Dixon En-
trance to the north and the
wild waters of Masset Sound to the
west. The Islands largest collection
of contemporary totem poles can be
found throughout the village includ-
ing the oldest modern pole raised on
the Islands in 1969. • • A drive around
Old Massett will reveal many active
artists and a village that takes its’
culture seriously. You can see logs
being prepared, and poles and ca-
noes being worked on. In homes and
studios, cedar bark and spruce roots
are being prepared for weaving and
wool being thigh-spun for Raven’s Tail
warp. Many artists have small sheds
or additions to their homes where
they work and sell their art. • • If you
are looking for something in particular
don’t be shy, ask around, and people
will point you in the right direction.

From the teachings of his an-cestors, Leo carves exquisite masks, paddles, drums and other monumental arts made from the local forest. Taught by master argillite carver, Mo-ses McDonald Ingram, he has since developed his own style.
