PeterSmithstillremembersalltheworkinvolvedinsettingupthefirsteverAutumninMalvernFestival,notleastfindinganeye-catchingpicturetouseonpublicitymaterials.‘Irememberthinking‘weneedsomethingclassy’soIspoketotheartistDavidBirtwhistleandsaid‘I’mstartingafestival,Imustbemad,butcanyoucomeupwithsomething?’’Thepicture’sonthefrontofthisyear’sbrochure,21yearslater.Inthis,it’s‘comingofage’year,theFestivaliscontinuingtogofromstrengthtostrength.Peteralwayswantedtorunhisownartsfestivalandfinallyrealisedhisambitionin1989.Its‘idiosyncratic’hesays,apersonalcollectionofmuch-lovedandnewlyresearchedmusic,poetry,prose,visualartsandfilm,withfirmrootsinourlocalartistictradition.‘Itsagift’hesays,‘Malvernisaveryspecialplace,becausethehillshaveinspiredallsortsoffamouspeople,scientists,musicians,writersandartists’.Peter’sloveofmusicbeganasachoristeratGreatMalvernPriory.LaterheformedAldwynVoicesin1968andfor10yearssangintheThreeChoirsFestivalwiththeWorcesterFestivalChorusunderitsinspirationalconductorChristopherRobinson,someonewhohadagreatinfluenceonPeter.DespiteabusycareerasaresearchscientistatRSRE/DERAhealwaysfoundtimeformusic,somethingheregardsaslifesustaining.Thisyear’sfestival,whichstartslaterthismonth,featuresaneclecticbutuncompromisingofferingofqualitymusic,speechandart.Therearetalks

onthelocalengineerandphilanthropistStephenBallardandtheartistDameLauraKnightwhocameheretopaint.There’sanopportunitytowitnesstheplainsongofficeofComplineinthePriory,whichiscurrentlycelebratingits925thanniversary.It’llbesungbymenfromAldwynVoicesinhonourofAldwyn,thefirstBenedictinePriorofMalvern.AlsoperformingduringthefestivalwillbeSofyaGulyak,winneroflastyear’sLeedsInternationalPianoCompetition.

Eachyearthere’sastrandrunningthroughthewholemonth,connectingtheBritishArtswithanothernation.Thisyear’sstrandisAmerican,withtwo

concertsfeaturingmusicbyAmericancomposersandanotherwithaModernJazzTrio.There’salsoaphotographicexhibitionbyCarlyRebeccaBishopwhovisitedNewYorkearlierthisyearonanassignmenttocapturetransientmomentsinthedailylifeofthecity.

Peter’sworkhasn’tgoneunnoticed,andovertheyearsthefestivalhasbeenappreciatedbyaudiencesofthousandsofpeoplenotonlyattheeventsinMalvernbuttolistenersofBBCRadio3.‘FromthebeginningIfelttherewasasignificantaudiencewhoappreciatedit.InfactovertheyearsIhavereceivedmanylettersofthanks,andpeoplefrequentlycome

uptomeinthestreetsayinghowmuchtheyenjoytheconcerts,talksandexhibitions’.Fundingforthefestivalcomesfromallsortsofplaces;manylocalbusinessescontributeassponsorsorbenefactors,andthereissupportfromlocalauthoritysourcesandgrantsfrombodies

What’syourfavouriteviewofthehills?InevertakethehillsforgrantedandInevertireoflookingatthemallthetime.They’relikeanislandrisingoutofthelandscape,itsunusualtohavearidgewithadroponeitherside,andonthetopthere’sasenseofspacewithrollingcountrysideallaround.Itsveryupliftingandyoufeelbetteronceyou’reupthere,Iliketogetthatfeelinginmypictures.Earlierthisyearthesnowwasgoodbecauseittransformedsomethingfamiliarintosomethingelse.OnemorningIwalkeduptheBeaconanditwasextremelywindy,itjustmakesyoufeeltheforceofnature.No-oneelsewasupthere,itwasveryspecial.

Aretherestillviewsyouwanttopaint?IseedifferentaspectsofthehillsallthetimeandI’mconstantlysearchingfornewviews.WheneverIgooutI’mlookingfornewplaces,afootpathsignmakesmethink‘theremightbeagoodviewupthere’.Rightnowthere’safieldofsunflowersonanearbyfarmwiththehillsstandinginthedistancewhichI’mplanningtopaint.I’vebeenfocussingonflowersatdifferenttimes,thisyearit’sbeenbluebellsandthestrongpinkofRose-BayWillowHerb.Ilikeastrongsubjectintheforegroundframedagainstthehills.There’salwayssomethingnewtopaint,thesamefieldschangethroughtheseasonsandonesubjectcanlookgoodinsomanydifferentways.Inlatesummerthegrassonthehillsturnsahoneycolourandlooksbeautifulwhenitsripplinginthewind.

TheGlycaemicIndex(GI)isanumericalsystemthattellsyouhowfastaparticularfoodcausesariseinyourbloodsugarlevels.AfoodwithahighGIwillproduceasuddenrushinbloodsugar,whileafoodwithalowGIwillkeepyourbloodsugarlevelsmorestable.Thisisnota‘fadwayofeatingordiet’itisascientificfact!However,itisimportanttostressthatpeoplewithdiabetesorothermedicalconditionsshouldconsulttheirGPbeforefollowinganyGIeatingregime.EatinglowGIfoodswillleaveyoufeelingfullerforlonger,andwillhelpyoutoavoidsnackinginbetweenmeals.FoodsthathavealowGIincludeapples,oranges,pears,porridge,beans,peas,pulses,lentils,brancerealsandpeanuts.However,aswellaseatinglowGIfoods,sometimesitisnecessarytoeathighGIfoods.Forexample,afterexercisingyourmusclesneedtorestoretheirsugarlevelsquickly,asmostoftheirenergywillhavebeenusedup.ThisiswheneatingafoodwithahigherGIvalue,suchasabanana,canbebeneficial.

A Healthy Balanced Diet

AswellasconsideringlowandhighGIvaluesinyourdiet,itisalsoimportanttoensurethatyourdietisbalancedandcontainsfoodsfromallfiveofthemainfoodgroups.Thesearecarbohydrates,proteins,fruitandvegetables,fatsandsugarsanddairyproducts.Carbohydratesincludestarchyfoods,suchasbread,rice,

potatoes,andpasta.Sourcesofproteinincludefish,meat,eggs,nutsandbeans.Dairyproducts,suchascheese,milkandyoghurtaregoodsourcesofcalciumandareimportantforstrongbonesandteeth.Fruitandvegetablesarerichinvitamins

andminerals,whichareessentialnutrientsthatyourbodyneedsinorder

Over the years I have seen many interesting cases. Here is one of my more

recent local ones.

”It worked for me!” says local vet Ann CarmanMalvern vet Ann Carman, from Whitehouse Veterinary Surgery recently came to see David with a painful right shoulder. As Ann explains “Being a vet is a surprisingly physical job, lifting heavy animals on a regular basis and tensing the shoulders whilst performing delicate surgery. After four months of nagging shoulder pain I was resigned to suffering some pain for evermore during day to day activities. At this point I decided to see David Jones at Prospect View.”Diagnosis and Treatment“After a thorough case history and examination, David concluded that I had a problem with my supraspinatus muscle which was causing an impingement syndrome. The tendon was being irritated as it travelled under the bone at the top

of the shoulder blade. The treatment consisted of work by hand on the soft tissues and some very specific exercises which I could do at home.” The Outcome“The treatment made a remarkable difference. After two sessions I only had a few minor twinges and a third session finished the problem off. It worked for me and I would recom-

mend the treatment to anyone who is suffering.”David says:“With Ann’s problem we were lucky that it hadn’t become too deep seated. Early diagnosis is important. That said even very long-standing problems can often be improved, it just usually takes longer to resolve. After 20 years in practice and 50000 treatments I’ve usually got a good idea of which cases are suitable for treatment.
