Until recently, for most people having problems with daily living, apart from moving in with family, the only alternative has been a move to residential care. Now, there is an alternative from McCarthy & Stone – Assisted Living.
Assisted Living bridges the gap between a conventional retirement property and more formal care alternatives. Importantly, purchasers retain home ownership, thus preserving their capital. Assisted Living may also postpone, perhaps forever, the need to consider residential care.
Staff are on site 24 hours a day and as part of the service charge, one hour of domestic assistance is available each week but extra support can be arranged. There’s also a waitress service restaurant, open every day for lunch and meals can even be taken to residents’ apartments in the event of illness.
Assisted Living has been designed to ensure a resident can do everything they would do in their own home, but far more easily. Apartments have a fi tted kitchen, level access shower as well as a bath. There are lifts to all fl oors, a residents' lounge where residents can socialise with other residents, if they wish, a separate function room and a guest suite complete with en-suite facilities.
Security is often a particular concern for the older homebuyer. Assisted Living benefi ts from advanced security systems like a 24-hour emergency call service and CCTV at the main entrance.
Retain your independence with McCarthy & Stone Assisted Living

Summer time!Earlier this week I had the pleasure of popping into one of Malvern’s newest shops, The Malvern Book Co-op, which opened earlier this year on Saint Ann’s Road. The shop itself it beautiful, it’s the perfect place to browse books or choose a gift. The ‘Co-op’ in the title refers to the way it’s been set up by a dedicated group of people, but more importantly, they’ve managed to give us an independent bookshop and contribute to a thriving corner of the town centre.
Among our many ‘What’s On’ features in this magazine is a fashion show taking place at the Morgan Visitors Centre which should be lots of fun. Take a look on Page 55, and we hope to see you there.
Enjoy the read,

in the Works are putting on ‘The Grim tales of the Brothers Grimm’, a show suitable for children over 7 years old.
“Of course it would be great fun for the Coach House Festival to stage Blithe Spirit, or Hamlet, or Earnest, but the challenge and excitement for me has always been in the writing of a new piece, and seeing it play in front of an audience for the very first time’ says Nick.
The Coach House Theatre sits next to the main theatre in Malvern. As the name suggests it was originally a Victorian stables and coach house. Since opening in 2006 its become a popular venue with touring professional companies and is home to the Malvern Theatre Players.
The Festival runs from August 1st to September 1st, all performances at 8pm and tickets cost £10 each. For more details look at www.allaboutmalvernhills.com
This must be something of a first for the Coach House Theatre. Throughout August they’ll be hosting ten different plays in a month-long Summer Play Festival.
‘Many of the ten plays are new writing, eight of which are written by local people’ says Nick Wilkes, who’s company MalvernBard is co-producing the festival with the theatre. Two of them are written by Nick, who staged his first play ’Resting’ at the Coach House five years ago. He’s recently completed his eighth play ‘Three Feet’ which enjoyed a sell-out run. ‘In five years, to have come from a small four-night production which used cardboard boxes for scenery, to a month-long festival of plays is amazing! I’m so proud to be a part of this new-writing tradition that has its roots in the original Malvern Festivals of the 1930s’.
The Malvern Festival began with a ‘drama festival’ in 1929 and was the creation of Sir Barry Jackson, who created the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and was a successful theatre producer in the early part of the last century. It came at a time of development for the Malvern Festival Theatre, and Sir Barry used the festival to showcase new works written by the playwright George Bernard Shaw. Shaw’s plays The Apple Cart, In Good King Charles’ Olden Days and ‘Too True to be Good’ were all seen for the very first time at Malvern.
The Coach House Festival begins on 1st of August with a production staged by the Ad Hoc Theatre Company, a group of experienced actors from the south-west of England. ‘Resident Alien’ brings us the views of Quentin Crisp, perhaps England’s most famous ex-pat, giving us his personal recipe for self-fullillment as he dissects life. Dreamshed Theatre Company from Cheltenham are putting on several productions for the festival, including ‘Dream On’, the story of one young woman’s dreams of appearing on a reality tv show. Another theatre company, Spaniel

Two of the productions:IVORY TOWERS by Bill Cronshaw Tue 14 - Sat 18 August.Neil takes a bold step when he enrols as a mature student at the University of Tirton. Little does he realise what’s in store as he discovers a world far removed from the images in the prospectus. A funny and moving tale of the effects of great literature, cheap lager, love and homeopathic medicine…oh, and learning!CASTING by Nick Wilkes Tue 28 August - Sat1 Sept.Hamlet and Ophelia have run off together. Producer Raymond and gritty, once popular director Julian have until six o’clock to get it re-cast before their funding gets pulled. A theatrical comedy that pokes gently at theatre management, arts funding & the ludicracy of casting.

Has opening and running a new book shop been hard work?It all started when we saw that Beacon Books was closing. As a group of friends we couldn’t bear the thought of a town like Malvern being without a bookshop, so we decided to set up our own! During months of meetings at which we drank lots of wine and ate lots of cake a plan gradually evolved. We found our lovely premises just before Christmas and then it was all systems go. The weeks leading up to the opening day were hard work but a huge amount of fun. Determined to keep costs down we seized upon the chance to rescue some shelves from the County’s archaeology department before their move to the Hive. We underestimated the many hours that it took to paint them and there were several late night painting sessions. We were fortunate to find a local craftsman who took our half-formed ideas and came up with a purpose-built counter and serving area. Then came the training on the till, coffee machine and computer system, quite a challenge for some of us! There were a few nerve-wracking moments when the stock didn’t arrive until the day before the opening but somehow it all came together in the nick of time.
What kinds of books do you sell? Our stock is entirely new books from the latest prize winners to traditional classics. We hold an
extensive range of non-fiction titles and books by local authors. Our colourful collection of children’s picture books is very popular and we have a comprehensive range for older children and teenagers. We have a very good ordering service with most titles arriving in the shop within 24 hours of being requested.
In an era when more and more books are sold online, or in electronic form, what do you offer that online retailers don’t?We are very aware that this can be a difficult time for independent booksellers but we have been delighted that so many customers, young and old, still enjoy real books as well as electronic text. Also, many Malvern residents seem to be very keen to support independent retailers and keep the character of the town. Our customers are appreciative of the fact that we also have an excellent ordering service with most books arriving within 24 hours (no delivery charge), a better deal than some large online retailers! As well as selling books we are also keen to develop as a centre for literary related activities and we offer a programme of events and activities. So far these have included book signings, talks from local authors, guided walks and discussion and reading groups.

What does the ‘Co-op’ part of your name mean?We launched a share issue giving members of the public the opportunity to become shareholders and thus become members of the cooperative. The money raised in this way has funded the initial start-up costs of the business. Members are able to vote on decisions made about the running of the shop and are entitled to a share of any profits made. Having members means that we benefit from a wide range of enthusiasm and ideas which all contribute to making the bookshop the vibrant and dynamic place that it is. Obviously you do not need to be a member to use the shop which is in all other respects exactly the same as any other business.

Many solicitors across Worcestershire have generously offered to provide a Write a Will service in September at very good value and donate all their fees to St Richard’s Hospice. Close to home, Evans + Webb in Malvern (01684 562526) are participating in the scheme.
Why you need a Will:• If you die without a Will, there are certain rules which dictate how the money, property or possessions should be allocated. This may not be the way that you would have wished • Unmarried partners and partners who have not registered a civil partnership cannot inherit from each other unless there is a Will, so the death of one partner may create serious financial problems • If you have children, you will need to make a Will so that arrangements for the children can be made if either one or both parents die• It may be possible to reduce the amount of tax payable on the inheritance if advice is taken in advance and a Will is made• If your circumstances have changed, it is important that you make a Will to ensure that your money and possessions are distributed according to your wishes. For example, if you have separated and your ex-partner now lives with someone else, you may want to change your Will. • After your family and friends have been remembered, it gives you the opportunity
to leave a gift to a charity like St Richard’s Hospice. This gift can have an impact on people’s lives for years to come.Your Write a Will fees will be donated to St Richard’s Hospice which provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and supports their families. Each year the hospice team supports over 2,300 patients and family members in Worcestershire.Eugenio Grandi and his family from Malvern are among many who have received support. He said, “The help that St Richard’s provides extends to the whole family and they realise only too well that there are times when they need supporting in order to be there for their loved one. The last days of Marilyn’s life were peaceful and happy. We were all supported in a cocoon of compassion, love and medical mastery.”
Have you writtenyour Will?Writing your Will is something many people put off as just another chore that can be delayed until another day.
But there are lots of very good reasons to make your Will, and the sooner it’s done the sooner you can feel happier that your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.
Make a simple* Will during September for only £80 or £130 for a double. For any queries please contact Rachel Jones, St Richard’s Hospice on 01905 763963 ext 2031 or [email protected] www.strichards.org.uk/writeawill
*A simple Will assumes no detailed advice on inheritance tax is required and instructions are taken at the office. The solicitors’ decision is final in this respect.
After your family and friends have been remembered, it gives you the opportunity to leave a gift to a charity like St Richard’s Hospice. This gift can have an impact on people’s lives for years to come.

survivingthe British weather
life, the one who gets all the bad luck. We don’t notice all the good things that happen to us, or and all the bad things that happen to other people. Yes, the weather has been wet and unpredictable lately. Yes, I would have preferred to spend some time in our new garden, starting to tidy things up and plan new flower–beds. Instead, I have had the chance to stay inside and do some writing. I have watched the gentle rain giving everything a good long drink. I have wandered a couple of times down to the compost heap and enjoyed the dampness on my cheeks.
When you find yourself tempted to indulge in some unproductive moaning, try this first and see what happens:
1. Remember what you have to be thankful for. At the risk of sounding like your mother, we usually have more to be grateful for than we realise. Start with the basics – air to breathe, the ground under our feet. Most of us have enough food, shelter, a decent level of health. Local resources – libraries, roads, parks. Belongings. People who love us. That patch of sky–blue
By Fiona Robyn from Malvern
It is the middle of the summer. We are meant to be enjoying BBQs and lazy Saturday afternoons in the garden. We are perfectly entitled to feel miserable, hard–done–by, resentful.Or are we?Recently I heard a conversation on the radio between the DJ and a caller. The DJ was moaning about the weather, and the caller asked him how long he’d lived in the UK. “More than thirty years.” So, the caller wanted to know, why was he so surprised and outraged about the changeable weather? Why couldn’t he accept it is ’the way things are’, and get on with things more cheerfully? The DJ got defensive, and called her ‘non–English’ for not joining in. The trouble is that most of us secretly enjoy a good moan, especially when others collude with us. Playing the ‘Isn’t it terrible’ game is often a way to bond with others and to feel a part of a group. Not–moaning isn’t about pretending that everything is wonderful when it isn’t. If we find out we have to pay several hundred pounds on dental treatment, and then ruin a loaf of bread by leaving out the yeast, then it is entirely appropriate to feel annoyed, or disappointed, or upset. What we don’t need to do, though, is turn these two random events into a story. ‘Bad things always happen to me’, or ‘this is going to be a terrible day’ can easily become a self–fulfilling prophecy. We start looking for evidence to reinforce these beliefs. Before we know it, we’re the kind of person who has to battle through
Well-Being
By the time you read this, the sun might be shining. But as I write this article, the view from my home–office window is ‘grey and drizzle’. The hills have disappeared. Yesterday, it drizzled. The day before that, it was stormy. The day before, it drizzled.

campanulas our neighbour has planted, which greets us every morning on our way to work…
2. Notice any ‘stories’ you have about yourself or the world. These stories can be incredibly powerful, but to start loosening their grip on you, just notice them. A few examples of these beliefs are ‘I never get what I deserve’, ‘nobody really wants to spend time with me’, ‘I’m never good at earning money’, ‘I always miss out on the best things’ etc. You could also start a list of counter–examples to your beliefs, e.g. ‘I was given a good bonus at work this year’.
3. Allow yourself to feel the feelings. As I said, it’s OK to feel annoyed or upset or disappointed when we are let down or when something bad happens. Allow the feeling to exist without pushing it away or grabbing at it when it starts to disappear.
4. Remember what you have to be thankful for. This needs to be said twice. Write a gratitude list at the end of the day, or spend five minutes doing a meditation practice called ‘Nei Quan’ where you think back over the past twenty four hours and list all the things you’ve received. The broccoli you ate for lunch includes the person who planted it for you, the sun that shone on it, the person who picked it, the truck that transported it, the shop assistant that scanned it…
The disadvantage of kicking the moaning habit is that, when you refuse to join in, people might look at you as if you’re a bit weird. This is probably because they don’t want to give up moaning, and you present a threat.
The advantage is that, with practice, you really will feel less upset by our terrible summer weather. You will enjoy the sun whilst it’s here, and get on with other things when it rains for a fortnight. The other solution, of course, is to move to San Francisco…

We currently have about fifty volunteers but because of the fluctuating hours of service most volunteers can offer we are always looking for more help. Plus with the current economic environment helpers are needed more than ever. Our charity provides transport for disabled people and over sixties without means of transport on their own, giving them lifts to such things as hospital appointments, shopping trips and garden centres. Volunteers can use their own cars when driving, being paid forty-five pence per mile to cover cost, or they can use one of the wheelchair adapted cars. We also currently provide two minibuses which can be hired by organisations or charities to keep their costs down and two public buses; one in Half Key and one in Castlemorten Common.
To be a driver for the charity is a lot more than just a taxi service though. Volunteers are also a companion to their passengers whilst accompanying them, helping them maintain their independence and being a friend. Drivers are not the only form of volunteers required however, and help comes in many forms. It might be providing cakes and helping to staff fundraising events, such as that which occurs each Friday and Monday morning at Prospect View Health Centre or helping out in the business side of the charity.
Community Action also encourages active involvement within the community of Malvern. We produce a local recipes cookbook, encouraging local people with particularly tasty dishes to donate their secrets. We are holding a photograph competition for a calendar where the winner will get a half day with a professional photographer. We are hosting a Charity Fair on

Community Action is celebrating its 40th birthday this July, commemorating forty years of hard work and supplying a service to people in need. The main aim of this birthday for us is to raise awareness of our role in Malvern and recruit new volunteers to donate spare time to help. We’ve also been chosen as the charity for the Mayor’s Jubilee.

The Garden Share scheme in Malvern is part of a trend, as more and more similar projects get underway across the UK. It comes under the umbrella of Transition Malvern, a local organisation dedicated to making Malvern more environmentally friendly. The group is currently planning a new project called ‘Abundance’ in which gardeners with too much fruit and vegetables donate it for use by others.
There is no money or formal contract in a garden share arrangement, although there may be an informal agreement about sharing produce. People may have concerns about becoming part of the scheme due to a lack of gardening knowledge or worries about the agreement but Sue says she is happy to sit and talk through any concerns. If you really struggle she might even be able to help with the initial stages of gardening.
A group of local people have found a way to lower their shopping bills by growing fruit and veg, even when they don’t have the space at home to do it.
According to the National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardeners there are approximately 80,000 people on allotment waiting lists currently in the UK. As food prices steadily climb and allotment waiting lists increase, the Malvern Garden Share scheme provides would-be gardeners a place to grow, by using the gardens of people who are either elderly or too busy to manage their gardens themselves.
Sue Wolfendale is the Co-ordinator of ‘Let’s Grow Together’ which was set up around five years ago. ‘I joined the scheme as I knew the person who was co-ordinating it. When she decided to move away from the area I took things on’.
We’re standing in the garden of the ‘Old Croque’ Bed and Breakfast in Malvern Wells, which was known for many years as a top-notch restaurant. The previous owners used part of the extensive garden to grow fruit and veg, and the new owner wanted to see it tended and cared for again.
Today, the garden is filled with beans, courgettes, soft fruit and a large bed of potatoes, which are almost ready to be harvested. ‘They taste delicious if they’re eaten as soon as they’re lifted from the ground’ Sue says, digging the first potatoes from the ground.
‘The scheme currently has six ‘matchings’ in place where people are gardening. This week I’m hopeful I’ve managed to arrange a chicken share!’ says Sue. ‘Someone rang me recently, looking for a place to keep hens. After visiting a a show for smallholders in Builth Wells, she’d bought a chicken run but then decided it might not be suitable for her own garden. I’m optimistic we may have found somewhere for her hens to live’.

How did it all begin?Since moving to West Malvern in 1987 I have been involved in various aspects of village life including the Friends of St James Church in West Malvern, the Village Hall, West Malvern Cricket Club, various fundraising events, and more recently with The West Malvern Arts Festival, now in its third year. I am not an artist myself, but I do appreciate art. When Laurie Gregory, one of the village’s well known long term residents, some years ago set up The Malvern Hills Community Foundation as a charity to provide a range of benefits, over the longer term, for local people in the wider Malvern area, I was asked to be involved. Further involvement followed with the Arts Festival, which was set up as a fundraiser for the charity. Having had some previous fundraising experience, I was “volunteered” by other committee members to do some of the publicity for the Festival. It is great fun, and has certainly kept me busy since!
Can you describe the trail to someone who’s not been before? The Festival is very original, and makes use of a variety of locations, large and small, to be found in West Malvern along the main road between the Elim College and The Brewers Arms pub. Besides these two locations, venues include St James’ Church, St James’ Primary School, garden walls, gazebos, and private garages, all kindly made available by local residents. Many of the exhibits can be seen in the open, but all can be viewed under cover if necessary.
The Festival is based on an event held in the village of St. Ceneri le Gerei in Normandy, France. Laurie came across the French festival, which is in its twenty seventh year, when he was in the area several years ago and thought it would provide a useful framework for a similar festival in West Malvern.
All About... West Malvern Arts Festival
The West Malvern Arts Festival began with the help and enthusiasm of many people in the village. Now in its third year, the festival returns on Friday 17th August for three days until Sunday 19th August and here Dru Bentley tells us more.
Admission is free to all. Hours are Friday 2-7pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am-6pm. Refreshments are available at various sites throughout the Festival, and, weather permitting, The Brewers Arms will host a barbecue on both Saturday and Sunday.
For more information, you can look at the festival website viawww.allaboutmalvernhills.com
This is its third year, is it developing or growing? In the first year, our Festival had about fifty artists, last year about eighty had work on show or for sale, so it is both growing and developing.
What can people see this year? This year’s Arts Festival is expected once again to have between seventy and eighty artists, mainly from Herefordshire and Worcestershire, some of whom will be appearing for the first time. There is likely to be a wide variety of art on display, so there will be something for everyone and some artists will be taking commissions. Sculpture in steel, clay and wood, mixed media, painters, potters, photographers, calligraphy, a working silversmith, a working weaver, ceramics, stained glass, garden ornaments, poetry and music plus a lot more are likely to be represented.

Malvern Theatres Announces Autumn Season
Theatre News
The autumn programme includes a scintillating variety of drama, comedy, music and dance. The season opens with Felicity Kendal, Jonathan Coy and Kara Tointon starring in Alan Ayckbourn’s classic comedy Relatively Speaking. Alan Ayckbourn features again later in the season with his altogether darker Haunting Julia and the autumn also includes returns to the venue for star names Tom Conti, Gary Wilmot, Timothy West, Gwen Taylor, Penelope Keith and Michelle Dotrice. She appears in the post-West End hit The Ladykillers in November and there’s more from the West End the week before as Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap marks its 60th anniversary season by touring for the first time.
The season also includes concerts from flautist James Galway, Guitarists John Williams & John Etheridge and saxophonist Julian Smith as well as orchestral performances by the English
Chamber Orchestra and Armonico Consort, who bring their historically aware version of Handel’s Messiah to Malvern. The National Dance Theatre of Jamaica’s performance in September is a must for all dance-lovers and fans of good musicals won’t want to miss the stage version of Jim Cartwright’s Little Voice, which stars Beverley Callard, Ray Quinn and Joe McGann. Then there’s standup comedy from Radio 4 News Quiz favourites Sandi Toksvig and Bridget Christie and talks from Jonathan Dimbleby and Sir Roger Moore.
Last but not least don’t forget to book your tickets early for this year’s Christmas pantomime Cinderella, starring Ruth Madoc and Jamie Rickers: there’s 10% off all tickets bought before September 1st!
For a full colour brochure detailing all of the Autumn shows, please call the theatre box office on 01684 892277 or view the online version at malvern-theatres.co.uk.
