All About Fireflies

Facts of the Firefly
• Native to the family of beetles or Lampyridae.
• 2000 species of this bug exist in warm to hot environments around the world.
• Other names for the firefly include: lightning bugs, glow worms.
Light Production and Function
• Chemical under the abdomen allows tail to light up for defensive purposes.
• Bugs light up to attract prey and mates.
• Uses of light chemical include: glowsticks, chemical and genetic research focusing on tuberculosis and malaria.
Eating Habits
• Fireflies eats slugs, snails, worms, and occasionally other species of fireflies.
• The head of the firefly is the only edible part, as the tail has a bitter taste due to the chemicals that make it light up.
• It is the choice of dinner for frogs and spiders.
