“I LIKE ME!
KIND, HEALTHY, AND DRUG FREE!”
Red Ribbon Week is being held this year October 22nd-26th. The statement above is our motto for the week. It is a
spirit week to educate our children about the importance of staying away from drugs, being kind and not bullying, as
well as an all-around healthy lifestyle. Please take the opportunity to discuss these important issues with your children
during the week. The following will be our schedule for the week.
Monday, October 22- RED RALLY DAY- Wear as much red as you can from head to toe to kick off the week.
Red ribbons will be handed out for each student and teacher to wear each day. An assembly will be held in the
morning to start the week off.
Tuesday, October 23- TURN YOUR BACK ON BULLIES!- Wear your shirt backwards to stop bullying.
Try your hardest to be kind all day to everyone. Remember that your words and actions can hurt so think before you
say and do mean things. Try to make a new friend today!
Wednesday, October 24- BE AN ANIMAL! GROWL OUT DRUGS!- Bring your favorite stuffed animal
or wear animal print. A treat will be given at lunch today!
Thursday, October 25- HATS OFF TO HEALTH- Wear your favorite hat to promise to eat healthier,
exercise and have a positive attitude about yourself and others.
Friday, October 26- TEAM UP AGAINST DRUGS- Wear clothing to show your favorite sports team. We
will join together, no matter who we route for, and celebrate the week in a parade at the end of the day. During the
week, classes will have made banners to display. Parents are welcome to come.
Besides these fun spirit days, there will be a door decorating competition and each student will have the opportunity to
sign a pledge banner in the grand hall promising to work hard to be kind, healthy and drug free. Each student will also
have a chance to “Plant a Promise” by planting a red tulip bulb at school. In the spring, when 700 bulbs bloom, it will
be a reminder of that pledge!
Jersey Mike’s Subs has generously donated the red ribbons to Greenville County Schools. Again this year, Jersey
Mike’s will offer a special deal. For each Jersey Mike’s Red Ribbon turned in on October 26th, 27th and 28th,
individuals will receive $3 off any sub!
Any questions about this event can be directed to Cathy Truesdale, 675-6084 or [email protected].

The PTA Reflections program is a nationwide arts recognition and
achievement program in which all of our students at PRES are eligible
to participate. This program was designed to enhance the arts and allows
students to create works of art for fun and recognition. Students can
create dance choreography, piece of literature, musical composition,
photography, film production, and visual arts (drawing, painting, collage)
to represent the theme "The Magic of a Moment". We would like to
encourage every student to submit an entry.
All entries should be turned into Marleen Baker by October 12. Students may submit as many
entries as they like. The winning entry from each category will be sent on to the state competition.
For more information please contact Marleen Baker at 355-7635 or [email protected].
Boosterthon 2012
Our Pelham Road All-Stars have traveled down Highway USA and had fun doing it! They learned all about the importance of making good choices while learning about some American heroes, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Thomas
Edison, Glenn Cunningham and Amelia Earhart. It was great having the Booster Team back at Pelham Road “doing their thing” and encouraging our students to be fit and to
be leaders. The Fun Run day was great. The weather cooperated for us and it wasn’t nearly as hot as it was the year before! We had great turn-out of parent cheerleaders!
Thank you for coming out and supporting our students. They love seeing you around the school. Also, thank you to all of our wonderful water volunteers! You were a huge help in making sure our runners stayed hydrated!
We have had two collection dates and still have some pledges outstanding. Please do all you can to collect
those pledges! We are counting on those dollars to help us with the student programs and technology costs for the year! Let us know if you have any questions!
Reflections Entries due: October 12, 2012

Volunteers We are off to a great start! The information from the volunteer opportunities sheets has been complied into
a massive spreadsheet! Each of our board members and committee chairs should have gotten the smaller spreadsheet that pertains to their events/volunteer opportunities. If you haven’t heard from anyone, you
will! Also, don’t forget to regularly check the Volunteer section of the PTA website and click on the Sign-Up Genius logo. I will update that with additional volunteer opportunities as they arise. Right now, we need volunteers to sell Chick-fil-A biscuits in the carline THIS Friday and several other Fridays during the school
year. Please sign up to help with this at Sign-Up Genius! If you have any questions about anything volunteer related, please email me at [email protected]!
Thanks, Anne Garner

Beef of article: In the upcoming November 6th General Election, new school board members will be elected. While there are no school board elections for those living in the Pelham Road Elementary district, teachers
and family members living in other areas could have candidates. Follow links to find out your school board area, info about candidates, and how to register to vote.
Your School Board
The operations of Greenville County Schools is governed by an elected 12-member Board of Trustees. Each
board member represents a single area of the county. There are no “at-large” seats on the board. The term of office is 4 years and there is not a limit on the number of terms a board member can serve.
The board is responsible for hiring a Superintendent and for approving school district budgets, policies and plans and conducting other official business. The Superintendent of Greenville County Schools reports to,
and is evaluated by, the school board.
Board meetings are open to the public. The school board generally meets twice a month on the second and fourth Tuesdays. The meeting on the second Tuesday is informational and held during the day. Official
business of the board is conducted at evening meetings on the fourth Thursday. Prior to the start of this meeting, members of the public have an opportunity to make a brief presentation to the board.
Elections for school board members are held every two years with 6 members elected each time. Races for school board are non-partisan: Candidates are not affiliated with any political party. There is no run-off
election. No matter the number of candidates for a school board area, the person with the most votes wins.
School Board Election
In the upcoming November 6 General Election, school board members for areas 17, 19, 21, 23, 25 and 27 will be elected. In three districts (21, 25 and 27) there will be only one candidate on the ballot. Parents and
school faculty living in districts 17, 19 and 23 should make sure they are registered to vote by October 6, learn about the candidates and vote on November 6. While there are no school board elections for those living in the Pelham Road Elementary district, teachers and family members living in other areas could have
candidates.
Find your school board area: Go to www.scvotes.org and click on “Voters” then “Check your Voter Registration.”
Find the candidates for the above board seats: Go to www.pepgc.org and click on “Public Policy” then “2012 Elections.”
Find information on all current members of the school board:

PRES STUDENT DIRECTORY UPDATE
All of the Student Directory Forms have been collected and now the task at hand is to input
everyone’s information to create a database for the Student Directory. The goal is to have the
Directory distributed to those who ordered one by mid-October. In order to ensure that
everyone’s information is accurate before we print the Directory, we are asking each parent to
log into their account on our PTA website and check over their information...even if you do not
wish to be listed in the Directory and even if you did not order one. We ask that you log-in and
review your information by Friday, October 12th.
Here is what we ask that you do:
Step 1: Go to www.PelhamRdPTA.My-PTA.org
Step 2: Login by entering your Email address and password
Step 2a: If this is your first time going to the PTA website, then you will need to register.
Step 3: Go to “My Account”
Step 4: Check to be sure your name as parents are correct, your child’s name, teacher and
grade are correct. Also please ensure your home address and phone number are correct.
Step 5: Indicate Yes or No if you want your email to be listed in the Directory.
Step 6: Fill out the information under the Directory Features and then hit Submit.
We will cross reference your information on the Directory Form that you submitted against
what you have listed in your PTA website account to ensure what we put in the Directory is as
accurate as possible.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact
Jodi LaValla (PTA Communications Chair) at [email protected].
