Most modern expanding dining tables require the addition of new pieces or a complex series of ac-tions to transform them from a small four-person table to a full dinner-length design. This simpli-fied version is more interactive, functional and engaging than most of its more cumbersome cousins.

The act of pulling on either end of the table is all it takes to flip up the extra leaves in the middle. In its extended form, the resulting configuration also contains central area that is highlighted in white to offset it from the surrounding wood, creating a kind of centerpiece for more formal occasions.

A series of aesthetically similar chairs comes as part of this extendable dining table set – with use-ful hangar spaces for coats and hats along their back as well as an implicit built-in visual refer-ence to the intermediate point in the converting ac-

With all of the more elaborate bunk beds available, designed to cater to creative children, there is some-thing to be said for simple, safe, styl-ish and flexible bunk bed designs that even an adult could get into.

These bunk beds from Inquisi-tive Kid are composed of addi-tive elements that allow for small but highly functional variations on the basic stacked-bed theme, include under-bed storage and shelving spaces and dual, climber-friendly round-rung side ladders.

Their modularity also allows for all kinds of configurations with-in a room, from the standard di-rectly-above-and-below forma-tion to partially under, completely apart and angled at 90 degrees.

From the same designer come other easy-to-assemble, flexible and modern-looking bed designs – though the kid appeal is not entirely lost in design simplicity: it is hard not to see an abstract African ani-mal in the configuration on the left.

The ultimate in visual and structural simplicity, the form of his combined home desk and shelving design by MisoSoup is composed of a single strip of curved wood that wraps up to become as much a work of minimalist wall art as it is a multifunctional work station with useful space-saving storage lofted above.

Like a shelving units or other storage systems, this combined furniture is designed to sit flush against the surface of the wall making it fit well wherever it works within a bedroom, living room or office layout. However, getting such a long and awk-wardly shaped wood structure into a small space in the first place might be a diffi-cult trick (perhaps the next move is to make it convert or come apart in a few places.

Otherwise perfect for small apartments and cramped condo spaces, very little interior room is taken up by this combination computer desk and bookshelf system. The keyboard slots back under the desktop surface and the chair slides in turn slides under the desk. Over-head, the shelves are non-obtrusive and, if anything, they help to shape space around them to make this miniature office feel more like a comfortable and enclosed interior space.

This kind of thing seems to be the inevitable next step in modular de-sign: cheap wood furniture that, like something from IKEA, is inex-pensive, portable and easy to as-semble but instead of coming with fixed plans it lends itself to custom crafted creations, from storage and shelving units to tables, desks chairs and stools made out of small multifunctional pieces and parts.

From a set of 13 pieces, designer Rodrigo Valdivielso estimates that about thirty standard objects can be easily made – all without the need for metal screws, joints, hinges or other permanent hardware. This has the natural dual benefit of mak-ing it possible just to buy the parts you want or need while also be-ing able to convert the furniture to new uses over time and making it all the more user-friendly and use-ful for do-it-yourself designers.
