Alice holds annual football banquet
Alice football celebrat-ed its successful season on Thursday night, hold-ing its annual football banquet. Students from the cheerleaders, drill team, training staff, and all levels of football were honored on the night.
Awards were handed
out for various position groups, and a most valu-able player was chosen for offense and defense. The player with the high-est grade point average was awarded the George Draper Scholastic Award.
The award that per-haps most represents the essence of Coyote foot-ball, the Fighting Heart Award, was given to senior Roel Ponce.
Seniors Oscar Resendez and Leo Adams took home the big awards on the evening, winning Offensive and Defensive MVP, respectively. Senior Ryan Pakebusch won the George Draper Scholastic Award for his academic achievements.
The Most Improved Award was shared by B.J. Gonzalez and Luis Perez. District 31-4A Co-Most
Outstanding Defensive Lineman Ariel Soliz was joined by Ralph Montalvo as Outstanding Defensive Linemen.
On the opposite line, District Co-Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Jesus Carrasco was joined by fellow senior Adam Benavidez as Outstanding Offensive Linemen
The Secondary Award
went to Davey Arredondo and Anthony Rodriguez. Outstanding linebacker was Brandon Garcia.
Lupe Leal and Noe Gamez were Outstanding Receivers. Outstanding Back was split between the senior duo of Juan Gonzalez and Preston Valenzuela.
The Coyotes finished the season as area champs with a 9-4 record.

Thirteen Coyotes named All-DistrictCarrasco, Soliz receive superlatives
Thirteen Alice Coyote football players were honored as 31-4A All-District, including two players who received spe-cial recognition. Senior Jesus Carrasco and Sophomore Ariel Soliz were named Co-Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman and Co-Most Outstanding Defensive Lineman, respectively.
“It means that the coaches in the dis-trict respected what we did this year,” Alice coach Chris Soza said. “I've always said that individual honors come with team honors and with team success. The team success was a reflection of the indi-vidual honors we received. Just real proud of the boys that received the hon-ors. It's always good that the coaches in the district respect that and give us our just accolades.”
The Coyote defense, which posted three shutouts on the season, had four defensive players make First-Team and two make Second-Team All-District to go along with Soliz's honor.
Seniors Leo Adams and Brandon Garcia were First-Team linebackers, while senior Ralph Montalvo and junior Michael Pena were First-Team on the defensive line. Roel Ponce and Joe Ryan Rea were Second-Team defensive end and cornerback, respectively.
“We knew coming into the year that our defense was going to be the strength of our football team,” Soza said. “When the defense played well, we would play well as a team.”
The offense got its fair share of All-District performers as well. Carrasco's fellow offensive linemen Adam Benavidez made First-Team tackle and Isaul Arismendez was named Second-Team guard. They helped pave the way for a pair of First-Team members in the Alice backfield – running back Juan Gonzalez and fullback Robert Ramos
“Any back will tell you that the offen-sive line gets the credit for that part of it,” Soza said. “Juan Gonzalez and Robert Ramos – they'll be the first to tell you that
the linemen are responsible for their suc-cesses in the backfield.”
Carrasco had a brilliant last season, capped off by his superlative.
“Even though he was about 5'11”, 170 pounds, the kid played like he was 6'4”, 240,” Soza said. “A lot of heart – he did everything we asked him to do, and its good to see that he got recognized like that...I can't be more proud of Jesus than I am because he epitomizes what every coach wants in an offensive lineman.”
The team's other superlative winner, Soliz, is in only his second year of high school.
“Ariel, being a sophomore, just has a lot of potential and a lot of ability,” Soza said. “Just real proud of him too. It's hard for a sophomore to get that kind of an honor but the district coaches felt like he was worthy of it...If he works hard, like I think he will, he can do a lot of things.”
First-Team kicker Alex Castillo is one of five All-District members that will return for the Coyotes next season.
“We expect leadership from them,” Soza said. “We expect them to lead our team in setting the precedent as to how it needs to be and what we need to do to get there again. It's good to have young kids recognized, but we expect more out of them now because they are going to be seniors next year. It's exciting for them that we have them coming back.”
Not to be overlooked, 14 Alice players made the Academic All-District team, including two that were also honored for their play on the field – Arismendez and Carrasco. The other honorees include: Mark Alaniz, Marcos Avila, Marco Balboa, Baldemar Gonzalez, Rolando Hernandez, Jon Jaramillo, Joseph Lopez, Warren Oaks, Michael Pakebusch, Rodrigo Pulido, Andre Saenz, and Gian Carlo Saenz.
“I think this is an honor that any kid in our program can achieve if they put their mind to it,” Soza said. “All these kids, although they may not all have been starters, they certainly deserve recogni-tion because of their efforts in the class-room.”
