High effi ciency air handling unit for wellness areas - Alfamini-Alfamax Series

    General

In the modern wellness centers, swimming pools or SPA, the tem-perature control and humidity conditions of the environment represent a crucial require-ment for the visitors comfort. In particular, the pool area requires a constant balance at any time of year; the continu-ing variation from dry and wet conditions of the users requires a perpetual and effective moni-toring of both air temperature (max. 2-3°C higher than water temperature) and relative humidity. With too high humidity values, breathing is actually inhibited while too low values can wors-en the cold feeling as the skin evaporation is accelerated. The particular wellness needs (high temperatures and con-stant relative humidity con-trol), the need to maintain cer-tain temperatures in the pool reintegrating hygienic require-ments for a portion daily (usu-ally at least 5% of the volume of the tank every day), the great demand for hot water for sanitary use, the considerable

air flow requirements and the con-trol of sensitive and latent loads to keep as low as possible the ther-mal differential between input and environment are all aspects that have a strong incentive for the designer to research plant types best suited to reduce energy con-sumptions.

GIVEN THE PECULIARITY OF THE ENVIRONMENTS THAT CAN BE SERVED BY ALFAMINI AND ALFAMAX UNITS, THIS MANUAL IS ONLY INTENDED TO PROVIDE PRODUCT INFORMATION AND INDICATIONS FOR THE CHOICE OF UNITS.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS NEED A BESPOKE STUDY: IN THIS CASE PLEASE CONTACT THE TECHNICAL -COMMERCIAL FAST DEPARTMENT.To meet the demands of the before described environments FAST SpA offers the AlfaMini (5 sizes with nominal flow rates from 2.500 to 13.000 m³/h) and Alfamax units (3 sizes with nominal flow rates from 16.000 to 25.000 m³/h).

The main unit function, which is a “plug and play” machine, is to dehumidify while providing control of wellness conditions of the envi-ronment.The unit combines a heat pump, a system of sensible and latent heat recovery from humid air expelled from premises and a “free” heating system of the water pool making it optimized for the reduction of energy consumption. The structure and all internal com-ponents are designed for maximum corrosion resistance.

    Energy efficiency

    Operating limits

The rooms in which the Alfamini and Alfamax units operate distinguish for being particularly “aggressive”.

AIR CHARACTERISTICS :The units are suitable to handle air from swimming pools treated with chlorine-based disinfectants.

WATER CHARACTERISTICS :Maximum concentration of chlorine in water: 1.4 mg/l.

ANY FURTHER APPLICATION THAT PROVIDES FOR CONCENTRATIONS IN THE AIR OR WATER OF PARTICULAR DISINFECTANTS OR OTHER SPECIAL SUBSTANCES NEEDS A PRELIMINARY EVALUATION BY OUR TECHNICAL-COMMERCIAL OFFICE, AS RESULT GUARANTEE FAILURE.

AVOID DIRECT CONTACT BETWEEN UNITS AND PURE DETERGENTS.

PROPERLY PROTECT THE PLATE EXCHANGERS OF THE REFRIGERATION CIRCUIT WITH SUITABLE WATER FILTERS TO AVOID CLOGGING.

Facilities where the units of the Alfamini and Alfamax series find appil-cation (swimming center, wellness area, etc..) are characterized by a very high energy consumption. The air handling units should therefore be optimized for the least possible impact in the energy balance of the system.

The technical solutions adopt-ed by the units are able to reduce the energy consumption through:

    - Use of efficient energy recovery from the exhaust air. The recovery system consists of a single (for the Alfamini series) or double (for Alfamax) plate cross-flow heat recovery unit;

    - Use of a heat pump with ener-gy recovery function from the exhaust air and energy integra-tion into the supply air flow.

The cooling system operates with refrigerant R410A: the TEWI Index (Total Equivalent Warming Impact), which represents the parameter relat-ed to emissions of refrigerant during the life cycle of the units and those due to the CO2 emissions for energy production, is lower than all other types of refrigerant currently available. The circuit is equipped with an elec-tronic expansion valve, which unlike the conventional thermal expan-sion valve, it allows to optimize the operation of the compressor thereby reducing the electricity consumption.

    - Use of high efficiency plug-fans equipped with electric motors with efficiency class EFF1.The direct coupling between fan and motor allows for the reducing of losses due to transmission (belt-pulley).These power losses can reach up to 20% of the absorbed power of the fan shaft;

    - Use of inverter devices for the electric motors speed control of the “plug fans”;

A logic control with automatic han-dling of operation cycles, so made to reduces the energy consumption.

High effi ciency air handling unit for wellness areas - Alfamini-Alfamax Series

These units, in the standard execu-tions, are constuìituted by a sec-tion which internally raggruppa the supply/exhaust fans and fi lters, and a further section equipped with refrigerant circuit and from heat recovery units.

FRAMEThe bearing frame is made of alu-minium profiles with anodisazion treatment which grants the nec-essary protection to the corrosion due to the potentially aggressive atmosphere. To facilitate the internal and exter-nal cleaning and avoid the dust build-up, the edges are rounded.Profiles are linked each other through nylon corners reinforced with glass fi bre.All fi xing screws are Marutex brand to grant an exceptional resistance to corrosion.

CASINGThe casing is made of sandwich panels with 50 mm thick fi xed to the frame with proper blocking pro-fi les. This fi xing system permits uniformpressure over the casing, providingexcellent air and water tightness (according to the EN 1886).Panels are made of internal surface in pre-painted galvanized steel, external surface in pre-painted galvanized steel and insulation by means of injected polyurethane with density 42 kg/m3.The accessible doors use selfclosing handles.Furthermore, all bearing elements and the components closings and are completely painted to guaran-tee the maximum resistance to cor-rosion.The inferior surface of the unit is equipped with draining panels in pre-painted galvanized steel with central discharge.

Upon request panels can be made in different materials for the sheets and mineral wool (density 40 kg/m3 or 100 kg/m3) as insulator. It is advisable to verify the dif-ferent options with Fast technical offi ce to check the feasibility. BASEMENTThe basement is steady for all sizes and made in galvanised steel sheet.

CROSS FLOW STATIC RECOVERY The energy recovery of the exhaust air acts through a single (for the Alfamini series) or double (for the Alfamax series) cross flow plate heat recuperator air/air. The heat recovery units are sub-jected to a complete paint treat-ment.

DAMPERSIn the standard confi guration, the unit is equipped with 4 dampers:- a damper placed outside, on the exhaust air fl ow;- a damper placed outside, on the fresh air fl ow;- a recirculation damper (used to permit the maximum speed of the room air fl ow);- a recirculation damper placed before the heat recuperator to make the “alfa cycle”.All dampers are made of anodized alluminium and each control-led by modulating actuators 24V (with spring return for the external dampers). The accurate construction allows for the reducing of the air laeck-age.

FAN SECTIONFans sections are epoxy painted resistant to corrosion, equipped with “plug fans” with wheels with high performance backward-curved blades. Electric motors with effi ciency class EFF1 driven to the wheel, to be controlled by inverter

    (standard).

FILTERSPanel fi lters are included on theexhaust (effi ciency class G4 in com-pliance with EN779) and panel + bag fi lters on the supply (effi ciency class G4 + F9 in compliance with EN779) which allow to respect the norms currently in force referring to room air quality. A differential fl ow switch for the clogging fi lters is supplied on the supply/exhaust as standard.

    Operation schemes Alfamini-Alfamax

Here under are the schemes of the main operating modes of the unit (schemes are referred to the Al-famax unit, the operation modes of the Alfamini units are the same

as Alfamax units). In the following schemes please consider that the hot water coil is always operating, as it must refer to external air tem-peratures lower than 10°C with re-

quired supply temperature which has to balance the heat loss of the building.

    Exte

    rnal

    air

This operating mode aims at reducing to zero the ex-ternal air capacity. The total air fl ow is recirculated through the damper n° 5 and re-introduced in the swimming pool. The water reheating coil is operating. The “operating” cycle is activated for the necessary time to reheat the room.

This operating mode aims at dehumidifying the roomwith the external air, by balancing the poof rain evapo-ration. The cooling circuit (composed of compressor n.1 and coils n. 2 and 3) allows to recover the sensible and latent heat of the exhaust air, and transfer it to the inlet air or water by means of the heat exchange system com-posed of the double exchanger on the water side. The hot water coil n. 4 integrates, if necessary, the he-ating capacity supplied by the cooling circuit, housed on the inlet air fl ow (condensing coil n.3).

During the night operation the unit adjusts the fun-ction settings to adapt to the evaporating variations of the pool and reduce the consumptions at minimum.

If convenient, the compressor also contributes to the swimming pool dehumidifying. The fresh air fl ow rate is modulated by the fans inver-ters to reach the required wellness conditions.According to the external ambience temperature theunit adjusts the operation in order to reach the bestenergy savings.

Cycle with heat transfer to waterIf the air temperature conditions in the ambience are satisfi ed, the heat so rejecked by the cooling circuit will be given to the swimming pool water, by means to a double plate exchanger (standard).A plate exchanger is an essential part of the cooling circuit of the unit (exchanger R410A/water of intermediate cir-cuit, in the following fi gure indicated with n. 1). A further inspectionable exchanger (operating with recirculation water of the intermediate circuit/ swimming pool water, in the following fi gure indicated with n. 2) is supplied together with the unit. The heat system thus constituted is of very easy maintenance. The components and the connections among the exchangers are responsibility of the client.

The scheme is indicative. For simplicity, all the components needed to complete the water circuit are not shown.

    Control system

The control system of Alfamini/ Alfamax units is equipped with a 16-bit microprocessor with flash technology and software specifi-cally designed for the control of all functions. The set information, alarms, tim-ing settings and all parameters are displayed on a multi-function control panel with graphic display inside the cabinet.

The control system automatically provides:to implement the cheaper operat-ing cycle and more suited to the room needs;to make the minimum air renewal required by law in force;to manage the initial stages of the heating up system;to implement a reduced function cycle when possible;to switch from air heating opera-tion to water heating operation.

For further information please refer to the control specific man-ual.

    EXTERNAL TEMPERAT. INDEX -10 -5 0 5 10 15 20 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33

    External temp. d.b. (°C) -10 -5 0 5 10 15 20 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33

    External relative humidity (%) 90 85 80 75 70 65 60 55 54 53 52 51 50 49 48 47

It will be introduced now the external index temperature which represent the different temperature/humidity combina-tions of the external air reported in the following table:

    Selection example:

    1- Given for example a tank with a surface of 100 m2;

2- Assuming that the water temperature is equal to 27 °C; the indoor air conditions are equal to 29 °C, 60% RH.

With these first data from table 1, we can define that the evaporation is equal to 172 g / hour per square meter of water surface.

3- Supposing that swimming pool is used for residential purposes. The use factor, derivable from table 2, is equal to 0,5.

Therefore the total humidity generated from water surface (g/h) is given from (tank surface x specific evaporation x use factor):

    100 m2 x 172 g/h m2 x 0,5 = 8.600 g/h

4- Assuming now that inside the hall are 17 people doing “light exercise”. From table 3 we can define that generated

  • Selection manual 14 GB

High effi ciency air handling unit for wellness areas - Alfamini-Alfamax Series

humidity is equal to 450 g/h each person.

Therefore, the total generated humidity (g/h) is given by (number of persons x specific evaporation):

    17 persons x 450 g/h person = 7.650 g/h

The total humidity is obtained from the sum of the humidity produced by the evaporation of the water surface with that generated by people:

    8.600 g/h + 7.650 g/h = 16.250 g/h = 16,25 kg/h

5- Now considering, for example, an outdoor temperature index (which represents the project condition/ operating limit for the Alfamini/Alfamax selected units) equal to 26 (i.e. outside air at a temperature of 26 °C with 54% RH) and tempera-ture/ humidity temperature inside the room of 29 °C with 60% RH: from graphs we obtain an eliminated humidity value of 4.1 g/h for m/h of fresh air into the hall.

6- The outside air flow required to compensate the evaporation produced by the water surface and people is obtained from the ratio between total humidity and the dehumidifying power of the external air:

    16.250 g/h : 4,1 g/h mc/h = 3.960 mc/h

Therefore from the table of nominal technical data, the selected unit according to the flow appears to be the Alfamini 040 with a nominal air flow of 4,000 cubic meters/h.____________________

According to the difference between the external temperature index and the room internal conditions, the size of the selected unit can vary a lot. Considering in the same example above that the external index now is 20 and not 26, from graph we can get the value of humidity removed is 7 g/h for m/h of fresh air into the room. And therefore the external air flow is:

    16.250 g/h : 7 g/h mc/h = 2.320 mc/h

From the table of the nominal technical data the unit to be selected is therefore the Alfamini 025 with nominal air flow di 2.500 mc/h.

    Operating limits

The external temperature index, per il quale the Alfamini-Alfamax unit has been selected, represents the operat-ing limit (referred to the external con-ditions) over that the unit is not able to keep the humidity control in the room. Beyond this limit, if the inter-nal vapore production is constant, the relative controlled humidity will devi-ate towards higher values.

Referring to the before example (external temperature index equal to 26), the side graph represents the indicative trend and not binding: - of the external air inlet in the room (continuous line) in relation to the total air derived from the unit;- of the internal room humidity deriv-ing from unit operation (dotted line).

    Hydraulic schemes for connections

The following is an example of a con-nection between the water/R410A exchanger (G in the picture, inside the unit) and the water/accessible water

exchanger (A in the picture and sup-plied loose). The lack or the not proper location of the mentioned components could

affect the standard operation of the unit.

    Components and indicative location

The thermostat (C) is used to detect the water temperature of the inter-mediate circuit and activate, even when the flow switch (B) gives its consent, the heat transfer to water. The set value of the thermostat is helpful to ensure that the water temperature at the water/R410A exchanger inlet does not exceed 27 °C.

Below this value, the heat transfer cycle to water is not able to activate. The differential flow switch (B) is used to detect the presence of water flow in the heat exchanger (G).The recirculation pump (E) must work only in case the water flow is present (W). Otherwise it must be off.

The heat transfer to the water cycle represents an alternative to the sup-ply air heating. If the set air conditions in the room are satisfied and the consent to the heat transfer to water is not active, the compressor of the refrigerant cir-cuit will turn off.
