Working with another volunteer once a week with large ordnance survey maps of England from the late 19th Century to early 20th Century. The aim was to record the condition of the maps so that they can be assessed by a conservator and eventually digitised. Jun 2015-present Long-distance Volunteer, Westminster Abbey

Working with old card catalogues from the Abbey’s wax seal collections, transcribing hand-writing and terminology and transferring the information into a customised Microsoft Access database. The overall aim was to create an inventory of the seals to eventually make the collection more accessible to the public.

During the project (conducted in my spare time during my bachelor’s degree), I catalogued materials using the Encoded Archival Description (EAD) software programme, Oxygen. The project was to digitise items, making them accessible to the public through Manchester University’s online archive, ELGAR. I worked on two collections; the Christian Brethren Archive and the Unitarian Collection, which included working on sensitive and personal papers dating from the 18th Century to the present day. I worked independently to structure items within the collection and assisted the archivist with other tasks, including administrative work.

Skills/duties: After receiving training from the Salford Foundation my duties involved listening to a select group of pupils from a Year 2 class on a one to one basis.
