Good poems: Snyder's "I went into the Maverick Bar", Stanford's "Wishing my wife had one leg" from his frst collection published that year. 19. Berrigan, Ted. FRAGMENT For Jim Brodey. London: Cape Goliard Press, 1969. First Edition. Illustrated broadside; approx. 15.5 x 11.5 inches. One of 327 (this copy not numbered as called for) copies made (the frst 60 of which were signed by artist and poet), after which "the plates were destroyed & the type dissed". Printed on Green’s English hand-made paper; illustrated with a three-color offset lithograph by Jim Dine. Dine born in Ohio spent four years in London, during which time this piece was published. Jim Brodey, to whom the 12-line poem is addressed was a poet and like Berrigan associated with the New York School in the late sixties. A wonderful collaboration between one of the foremost pop artists, and a central fgure of the Second Generation of New York School Poets The type is printed in blue and black and the toothbrushes in black, cream and pink. The colophon and limitation details are printed on the back of the sheet. This copy hors commerce, not numbered. In excellent condition, only light signs of handling to the edges. [11975] $225.00

This copy Inscribed by Bob Hawley co-founder of the press to a friend of the press. Fabilli was a longtime friend of Robert Duncan one of the primary authors published by Oyez. Signature a bit smudged, else fine. [12017] $10.00

26. Hoagland, Tony. The Loneliest Job in the World. Berkeley: Hit & Run, 2011. First Separate Edition. Broadside poem printed by Larry Rafferty on BFK Rives using his Vandercook SP-15 proof press. 8 1/2 x 11 in. One of 25 signed by the poet (of 75 total, of which 25 went to the author). A lovely production: black lettering with the publisher logo embossed on blue and white illustrated heavy paper. Fine. [11984] $65.00

The poem is from the 2010 collection UNINCORPORATED PERSONS IN THE LATE HONDA DYNASTY. Hoagland has become one of our most popular poets; winner of the Twain, Laughlin and many other awards.

Evidently an advertising brochure for the magazine, reproducing the cover of YEAH 2, with subscription rate ("$100 for the next 400 issues (or pro rata)"), a poem beginning: "At the meeting of radicals...", and a "A Waiver & Agreement/ This certifes that I, the undersigned, a female about to enjoy intercourse with .......". A typical but scarce bit of ephemera from Tuli Kupferberg's Birth Press. Soiled and creased, about very good. [11879] $95.00

Stallings; of the 100 total copies, 25 went to the author, the remaining 55 unsigned. Printed on a Vandercook No. 4 Proof Press at Colored Horse Studios in Ukiah, CA. The poem is from the poet's frst regularly published book ARCHAIC SMILE. Fine, and a lovely production from Larry Rafferty's press. [12101] $65.00

Stallings was a recent winner of a McArthur "genius" Award. Originally from Georgia, she now lives in Greece, and has become a leading translator from the Greek, and one of the leading poets of her generation.

Trethewey was named Poet Laureate in 2012; previously she was the winner of a Pulitzer Prize for her collection Native Guard, the collection in which "Pastoral" was first published.

41. Auden, W. H. ON THIS ISLAND. NY: Random House, 1937. Second Edition. Brown cloth in dust jacket; 8vo. This copy signed by Auden on the title page, having crossed out his name as usual, and, also, in the same ink and presumably in Auden's hand on page 31 drawn three arrows down the long empty space after the words "physician, bridegroom and incendiary". The bibliographer calls this a "second impression", with two printings of the frst edition and three of this edition. All priced at $1.50. Bloomfeld A13b. A nearly fne copy with shelfwear, the spine gilt only slightly dull, in a spine dulled dust jacket, separated at the fold, else mostly edgewear and about very good, [12030] $275.00

Published in England as LOOK, STRANGER! Auden wrote to publisher Bennett Cerf of Random House "Faber invented a bloody title while I was away without telling me. It sounds like the work of a vegetarian lady novelist.” The American edition also included changes requested by Auden (not unusual for him).

43. Baxter, Charles. THE SOUTH DAKOTA GUIDEBOOK. NY: New Rivers Press, 1974. First edition. Blue cloth in dust jacket; 8vo. 86 pp. One of 200 copies in cloth (there were 400 in paper) of the writer's second book a substantial collection of poems, published by the same publisher as his frst collection, and all more than a decade before his frst fction was published. Signed and dated in 2011 by the poet. Very light wear to ends, still fne in a bright dust jacket with a few small closed tears and a small pencil eraser-sized chip near the spine. [12020] $350.00

According to the author preface two of the poems published in WORD IS OUT drew the FBI for their antiwar stance; although liberal and the author likely a pacifst, the poems are hardly radical in tone. AE was a key fgure in the Irish Literary Revival as a poet, Theosophist and artist. He was trained as an artist, and this pencil drawing is typical of the subject mater of his larger works. A very good copy though the label spine gilt has completely faded; the drawing and pages are clean, although the previous owner has written her name in ink on the ffep and marked passages in pencil. Letter (Tls). 1944 typed letter by Tate, on Library of Congress letterhead (as Chair of Poetry), to Edward Titus, acknowledging Titus's return to the States and suggesting a future visit. Signed handsomely in full. Folded three times for mailing, old tape-repaired tear, creasing at margins, but good or better. [12123] $150.00

Titus was a Polish-born American citizen who founded a bookstore and later a press in Paris called the Black Manikin Press. He also published This Quarter one of the premier literary magazines of the modern era, publishing Hemingway, Sirin (Nabokov). Cummings, Mann and many others including Tate.

Inscribed with is initials in 1928, by Thayer to Buzzard on front free end paper. A poem on half title in ink likely in the hand of some one other than Thayer. And with an elegant pencil copy on front free end paper beneath Thayer's presentation of a short statement about Thayer, linking him to Eliot, the Dial (which Thayer edited), etc. Other than armorial bookplate, trace wear and foxing, ink poem and old price, near fne. Thayer was Harvard and Oxford educated. It was Thayer's sister who introduced T. S.Eliot, in Thayer's rooms at Magdelen College, to his future wife Vivien; and it was Thayer who published The Waste Land in the Dial which he turned into arguably the finest US literary magazine of the 1920's.

Although her latest volume eschews some of her usual formality (including here no punctuation), her poems are populated by animals and trees, and the seasons both beautiful and fatal. With the recipient Ruth Ford's notes about the poet's reading at the home of Tatiana and Alex Liberman (the famed Vogue editor). An important collection by the great Russian poet who was one of the best known poets in the West in the 60's and remained an important literary fgure until his death in 2010. Foreword by W. H. Auden, with translations by Auden, Wilbur, Kunitz, W. J. Smith and others. A few of Ford's pencil notes, a couple of light smudges, else about fne in a lightly worn at edges, else near fne dust jacket. A lovely copy and a rare book signed. [11893] $200.00

Ruth Ford was an actress, and the sister of Charles Henri Ford (and wife of Randolph Scott); she was known for her soirees at her Dakota apartment. Vosnesensky read to thousands in Russia and in the West.

This book won the Pulitzer and National Book Award; he is the only writer to win the Pulitzer for fction and for poetry (which he won twice). A central literary fgure as a founder of the New Criticism and as a member of the Fugitives. Top edges dusty, bottom tip worn, but very good in a slightly worn, edge-frayed black jacket. Viking in the 1950's had likely the greatest assemblage of editors (along maybe with Random House) in publishing. Fine in a worn about very good and solid slipcase. Attractive edition with the addition of a likely unique "review" slip, as this was given to a woman who was the publicity director for Viking at the time - a bit of an inside joke: a review slip to a publicity director. 122. Wylie, Eleanor. NETS TO CATCH THE WIND. NY: Harcourt Brace, 1921. First printing, frst issue. Two-toned brown cloth; 12mo. The poet's frst book published under her own name, and one generally regarded as her best. Wylie was in the heady 20's a literary star, famous for her beauty, and infamous as well for her several marriages and affairs. She died young of a stroke in 1928, but in the short time between her death and the publication of this book she published four more volumes of poems and four novels. This an exceptional copy, with light wear, spine gutter darkened in places, else about fne, in a dust jacket faintly soiled and chipped and darkened at the spine. Housed (for quite some time) in a custom folding chemise and quarter leather slipcase with raised band, which has light wear to the ends. Overall near fne and scarce as such. [12019] $275.00
