Network Management Fundamentals explainsthe different technologies that are used innetwork management and how they relate to

each other. The book focuses on fundamentalconcepts and principles. It provides a solidtechnical foundation for the practitioner tosuccessfully navigate network managementtopics and apply those concepts to particularsituations.

The book is divided into four parts:

Part I provides an overview of whatnetwork management is about and why itis relevant. It also conveys an informalunderstanding of the functions, tools, andactivities that are associated with it.Part II examines network managementfrom several different angles, culminatingin a discussion of how these aspects arecombined into management referencemodels.Part III provides more detail into differentbuilding blocks of network managementintroduced in Part II, such as managementprotocols, management organization, andmanagement communication patterns.

Part IV rounds out the book with a numberof management topics of general interest,including management integration andservice-level management.

Principles of ComputerSystems and NetworkManagement

As computer systems and networks haveevolved and grown more complex, the role ofthe IT department in most companies hastransformed primarily to ensuring that theycontinue to operate without disruption. ITspending, as reported by a variety of studies,shows the trend that most of the expensesassociated with IT are related to the task ofoperating and managing installed computer

systems and applications. Furthermore, thegrowth in that expense category is outstrippingthe expense associated with developing newapplications. As a consequence, there is apressing need in the companies andorganzitions to find qualified people who canmanage the installed base of computer systemsand networks. This marks a significant shiftfrom the previous trend in companies where thebulk of the IT department expenses weretargeted on development of new computerapplications. The shift from developing newapplications to managing existing systems is anatural consequence of the maturity of ITindustry. Computers are now ubiquitous inevery walk of life, and the number of installedsuccessful applications grows steadily over thetime. Each installed successful application in acompany lasts for a long duration.Consequently, the number of installedapplications is much larger than the number ofprojects focused on developing newapplications. While there always will be newapplications and systems being developed

within companies, the predominance ofmanaging and operating existing applications islikely to continue.
