Key Clients
MAGIC 8 BALL PACKAGING DESIGNREFERENCES & INITIAL SKETCHWORK
The brief was to come up with new packaging for a range of classic toys.
The first of which was the Magic 8 Ball.
I took inspiration from the occult and various methods of divining the future
from various cultures as well as ancient symbols of knowledge, ranging from
general knowledge of the world, omiscience, and prescience.
In these key references you can see Athena’s Owl of Wisdom (the owl is
also significant in African culture as an omen of death), A voodoo doll, The
all seeing eye of providence, a plague doctors mask (the plague doctors
were noted as seekers of knowledge and in folklore of witches), bones used
in divination rituals by African Sangomas (a kind of tradional healer), and
finally the bulls head (bulls occupy a unique place in Egyption mythology as
being both of the sun and of the moon, and a key aspect in divining one’s
fate).
Using these references I chose to go with a rough hand illustrated look and
feel and created some illustations that would be placed on the box.
The owl I went for a highly styled bold pattering as a key central image that
would easily be able to grab attention on the shelf. The rest I went for line
drawings that would have a white fill.
The box was intended to be black so the contrast between the white
graphic and the black box would be bold and eye catching.
Unfortunately my client decided that the illustrations connection to the
occult would deter customers and that the rougher sketchy style was not
appropriate and I had to go back to the drawing board.

“‘Oh look!’ said the Goddess. ‘It's the portent.’ ... Bethi was lying stiffly stretched out in the bar of moonlight.”
Not wanting to give up on the link to revealing
knowledge I did more research and remembered
portents. I was also immediately reminded that
a portent if often revealed through projected
light as seen in “Aladin and the King of Thieves”,
Avatar: The Last Airbender, and a novel I read as
a child: The Lives of Christopher Chant.
To play on this I incorporatted basic physics surround the refraction and reflection of waves, and more specifically light waves.

I went for a very clean geometric style of
illustration and you can observe light reflecting
and refacting to illuminate your future through
the 8 ball.
SURREAL EYE PRINTREFERENCES
The “Figment Eye” was a fabric print I
developed while working for fashion designer
Jacques Van der Watt for his A/W 2015
collection. The entire collection was inspired
by the Surrelist art movement. I wanted to
incporate the eye that featured so prominently
in the movement as well as the concept of
impossible proportions.

While developing the design from sketch I ca
across a work inspired by Dali’s Caravan. The
loing string of legs would work as the basis for a
set of eyelashes. So I isolated them and applied
them to a very simple graphic eye I had created.

You can view the end result and application
and as you can see it creates a visually striking
effect due to it’s highly grpahic and contrasty
nature, and the feeling that you are constantly
being observed that the eyes evoke.
BEFOK MAGAZINEREFERENCE MATERIAL
For my bachelors thesis project. I wanted to
explore the foundations of print design. So I
went back to fundamentals of every aspect of
magazine production to produce and almost
entirely hand made magazine. I took all the
photography myself on a film camera and
developed the film myself as well. I used an old
Warfdale press to letterpress all the headlines
and finally wrote all the articles myself as well.
The idea was to fully understand what goes into
the production of a magazine, and appreciate
how far the production process has progressed
I was highly inspired by the DIY nature of punk
zines from the 70s through to the 90s as I felt
they were an embodiment of what I was trying
to achieve

I hand illustrated and textured the front cover
as well. Befok is Afrikaans slang for crazy, and
the issue name Dazed vs Bewildered stem
from the two festivals Rocking the Daisies and
Oppiekoppie (who’s theme for that year was the
Bewilderbeast) It is also a play on words relating
to being disoriented which I feel the high pace
of digital media and the onslaught of sensations
can leave us in. So this physical magazine was
meant to be a anchoring artifact.

meet Shortstraw, a 5-piece afro-indie pop rock band from Johannesburg, who are making serious waves in the indie music scene. This quirky, feel-good band, who’s personalities are as absorbing as their music, started off as a 2-piece drum/acoustic guitar band, with Al (lead vocals and guitar) and Ollie (drums and backing vocals). They formed in 2007 but only officially started performing in 2008, adding a guitarist and bassist before recording their first album ‘WE SLEPT THROUGH IT ALLl’. The band eventually split for work and travel reasons, leaving best mates Al and Ollie to continue the journey alone for some time.
In 2011 the band officially became a 5-piece, fuller sounding and stronger than ever with Gad on keys, synths and backing vocals, Tom on lead guitar and Russ on bass, forming this dysfunctional/crazy pool of talent and ambition. Having toured a bit with their first full release, ‘YOU’RE UNDERFED, I’M WONDERFUL’, they admitted
“People around the country need to know that we’re as excited to play live shows as we are to have our music recorded. No matter where you are in the country, you’ll always play a show to someone who has never heard of you and that’s the kind of exposure we need to be creating”.

They have slowly been taking advantage of the growing indie scene, especially in Cape Town, and are actually in the Cape as we speak.
Over the last year or so, the band has been writing new material and just finished recording their second album, called GOOD MORNING, SUNSHINE. Asking them how the public has received the new release, they said,
“Better then we could ever have hoped for. It really has been great. We’re so proud and happy with the end product. It’s nice to get the recognition that we feel we deserve for it. It’s super swell!”
Coupled with opening for The Kooks in Johannesburg last week and winning the MK award for ‘best indie band’, Shortstraw have arrived on the scene and are here to make you dance.
Their new album was recorded at High Seas Records in Rosebank,Johannesburg, with the band spending two weeks in studio and another two weeks mixing the album,
“We’ve done the album really quickly, which has prevented us from sitting on anything for too long. It’s often when you have too much time, that you suddenly create problems with songs. With this, we were just like, ‘Fuck yeah, that sounds rad! Track that shit! Done.”
Previously, most of their music was recorded in their old guitarist’s bedroom, with them doing the entire recording themselves due to a low budget. With this album they had some money to spend, so after searching for a place to record, they finally found High Seas to be the perfect place for them,
“We developed the new sound over the past year and a half and we wanted people to hear how we’ve progressed. We’re really proud of it! In terms of inspiration for the songs, it’s pretty much girls and partying. We pride ourselves on our live show, and we wanted that to come through on the album.”
Coming a long way since 2007, Shortstraw have played at Jo’burg Burning
2 and 3, Oppikoppi Smoorverlief, The Converse Street Party, The Free Bacardi Party and most recently opening for The Kooks at the #5GumExperience in Jo’burg, blowing us away. They have also played alongside some of the best local talent like SHADOWCLUB, DESMOND & THE TUTUS, WRESTLERISH, and DANCE, YOU ON FIRE Loving what we saw when they opened for The Kooks, we knew we needed to chat to these rock-n-rollers.
For the magazine redesign I chose to go for
a very clean minimalist aesthetic making
strong use of block grids to keep the layout
as clean as possible while still allowing for
interesting placement and juxtaposition
of text, photographs and vectors. This I
feel adds a modern edge to the magazine
and helps embody its ethos of providing
a platform for the exhibition of forward
thinking pop culture trends. I redesigned
each page to so that the design of the page
enhanced and encapsulated the spirit of
the content thus providing unique spreads
while still maintaining coherence across the
magazine.

For this project I chose to explore the potential
of typography as an illustrative elements as
opposed to just the medium for conveying a
writtent message. So utilising just 1 flat colour
per page and no traditional illustration , I set
about using typogrpaphy to create illustrative
interest.
There is a strong focus on texture and lending
visual cues to the text through arrangement.
And it is through this that a highly stylised
striking illustration of a story is able to be
achieved that may not be as effective if
traditional illustration techniques were used.
Bon Appetit is a start-up company with the goal
of taking the dining experience digital, bringing
resteraunts and diners closer together.
The approached me to design the user
experience and user interface for the application
that their start up centered around.
To achieve this goal I created a base application
heirarchy and work flow that can then be
customised to apply to each resteraunt that
buys into the platform.
In doing so I created a user experience
that would be consistent no matter which
restaurant the app was used at, but allowing for
customisability so that each restaurant was still
a unique experience.

Colour Palette
Decor
This is a branding pitch for a
restaurant called Seis. Seis is Spanish
for 6 and references Carbon. The 6th
element of the periodic table. It is also
a reference to Benzene rings which
have a hexagonal structure. As such
the Hexagon plays a strong role in
this Branding. The main over arching
theme is the interplay between the
natural and constructed world as
well as the parallels between the
pharmaceutical and food industries,
as they both manipulate nature in
similar ways to sustain us.
