TheBoys&GirlsClubofHendersonCountyawardedthetitleof2019YouthoftheYeartoEastHendersonHighSchooljuniorAlexAcosta.AcostawasoneoffourmembersfromtheBoys&GirlsClubofHendersonCountycompetingfortheYouthoftheYeartitleanda$1,000collegeaidscholarshipprovidedbyHunterSubaru.Followingthislocallevelofrecognition,Acostawillgoontocompete for the North Carolina Youth of the Year titleanda$5,000collegescholarshipfromBoys&GirlsClubsofAmerica.IntheirbidforthetitleofYouthoftheYear,Acosta,alongwithfellowcandidatesMayaGash,XzavierJacobs,andJuliusHoopersubmittedportfoliosforreviewincludingvolunteerhours,reportcards,andmultipleessays.Inaddition,thefourwereinterviewedbyapanelofthreejudgesbeforepresentingaspeechtothemorethan100guestsinattendance.VolunteerjudgesincludedDr.LauraLeatherwood,PresidentofBlueRidgeCommunityCollege;JohnnyJohnston,longtimesupporterandFazioGolfTournamentcommitteemember;and,RandyHunter,Boys&GirlsClubBoardmemberandChairmanofHunterCorporation.Thejudgesbasedtheirdecisionontheportfoliossubmitted,candidateinterviewsandthefinalpresentationbeforetheattendeesattheluncheon.FollowinggraduationfromEastHendersonHighSchool,AcostahopestoattendUNCChapelHilloran

IvyLeagueschoolwhereheplanstostudytobecomea pediatrician. “Alex has already demonstrated his commitmenttoyouthasavolunteerandJuniorStaffmemberattheClub,”saidJCSchwab,ExecutiveDirectorfortheBoys&GirlsClubofHendersonCounty.Acostaleadsa2ndgradeclassaspartofhisjobattheClub.The Youth of the Year titleisaprestigioushonorbestoweduponanexemplaryyoungpersoninrecognitionofleadership,service,academicexcellenceanddedicationtoliveahealthylifestyle.Nowinits72ndyear,theYouthoftheYearprogramhonorsthenation’smostawe-inspiringyoungpeopleontheirpathtogreatfuturesandencouragesallkidstolead,succeedandinspire.In his speech, Acosta spoke to the desire to inspire youngerClubmembers.“Iwantthosetalentedkidstoseewhattheyarecapableof.Iwanttobethebestrolemodelforthem.”Furtheradding,“I am a product of the Club, and without the Club I wouldn’t be the person I am today.”

Weareanorganizationofvolunteersfromtwelvefaith-basedandcivicorganizationsinHendersonCountywhoarecommittedtocookingandservingahotmealto250to300childrenattheBoys&GirlsClubeveryFridayafternoon.Thatisouronlymission.DonationsandGrantspayforthefoodandsupplies.
Our only other need is volunteers. Ifyouagreethatnochildshouldgohungry,considerofferingyourtimeandtalenttothiscause.Wewelcome all volunteers whether they are part of an
organizationoroffertohelpasanindividual.Youdonothavetobeacooktobeavaluableasset to this work. Belowisalistoftalentsandskillsthatwouldbeofgreatvaluetothemissionoffeedingkids.PleasecallIrvKershner(828-489-9569)orSkipGrasser(828-595-1105),ifyouseeagoodfitforyour skills/experience.
