Please note two outstanding memberprograms featured in this ALERT. One, atalk and reception, specially put together forNAAC members, with Lily Hope, Tlingitweaver and organizer of InterwovenRadiance, on March 16, from 1-2:30 pm.Two, an opportunity to attend a play atPortland Center Stage, And So We Walked, featuring Cherokee actress Delanna Studi. That will take place on April 28 at 2 p.m.

I know that all of us are interested in havinga new curator. Please be assured that theprocess is active and ongoing. It isdeliberative and very thorough. In this periodwithout a curator, our mission is to continueto plan programs for members and thelarger community that support the NativeAmerican art collection and the museum. This saying may bea bit overused, but I find it helpful: "Keep Calm and Carry On."

We have renamed our membership committee to Membershipand Outreach to better reflect our emphasis. Please see thearticle on Members in this ALERT. Let's continue to reach out tobring in new members, to spread the word about ouroutstanding collection and programs, and to be ambassadorsat large.

Lily Hope

Please join NAAC members for a special tour of the Center forContemporary Native Art's current exhibition, InterwovenRadiance, with Lily Hope. Lily Hope, famed Tlingit weaver andartist, is the organizer of the current exhibit, which featuresChilkat and Ravenstail weaving, in particular her own work andthe work of the late Clarissa Rizal (Lily's mother) and the lateTeri Rofkar.

The exhibit celebrates the vitality of Chilkat and Ravenstailweavers of the Northwest Coast and traces the lineage offemale weaver-teachers. This is a wonderful opportunity tohear first-hand the story behind these beautiful and powerfulworks of art, most taking more than a year to finish.

Please meet at 1:00 pm in the Stevens Room, Lower LevelMain Building, to check in. Lily's talk will be in the CCNAGallery. After the program, we will return to the StevensRoom for an informal reception and conversation.

To our new (and newish!) members: we extend a specialinvitation to you to attend this program so we can officiallywelcome you to the Council.

An RSVP by Tuesday, March 13 to Liz Lambert,[email protected] or by phone at 360-574-2836 would beappreciated.

NAAC MEMBERS THEATER EVENT

Ellyn Bye Studio

AND SO WE WALKEDWritten and Performed by DeLanna Studi

A frank, funny and sometimes misguided story of acontemporary Cherokee woman who goes on a six-week, 900-mile journey with her father along the Trail of Tears in search ofher heroic self. Through this personal odyssey, her sense ofidentity--both as a contemporary Cherokee and as a woman--is tested by the people and places she encounters.

DeLanna Studi played Marie Dorion/Sarah Astor in Astoria; and then moves to the Studio to star in her own very personalplay.

The Native American Art Council has reserved a block oftickets for this performance. Please join us to see this excitingwork. After the performance there will be a Q&A with DeLanna

From those who have been members since 1984 to those who joined last month, we truly value your support and commitment. Through your involvement the Council has purchased many works of art for the collection, provided monetary sponsorship of museum exhibitions, including last year's Native Fashion Now and this year's Interwoven Radiance, and organized a wide and deep variety of programs on Native Art and Culture. Since our program year began last September, there have been eight programs for our members. And more to come, as youcan see in this ALERT.

New members are always welcome! If you have friends oracquaintances interested in the Native American Art Council, please send their names to Laura Fallon-Burns, Membership and Outreach chair, [email protected] and we will contact them.

Sometimes people think that they have to submit an application or have specialized knowledge of art to jointhe Council. Please emphasize that ALL are welcome! Council members do need to be a member of the Portland Art Museum (at any level).

Be on the lookout for other Membership and Outreach activities in the near future.

READING CIRCLEALL NAAC MEMBERS WELCOME!

The next Reading Circle is Wednesday, May9, 2018 at 1:00 pm (new time) and will meet inthe West Conference Room, 2nd Floor MarkBuilding.

The selection is An Indigenous People'sHistory of the United States by RoxanneDunbar-Ortiz.

It is a history of the United States told from the perspective ofIndigenous peoples.

On Wednesday January 31, Mary Jo Hesselled the Reading Circle in a lively discussion ofthe book Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin WallKimmerer. In it, the author addresses"indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge andthe teaching of plants" and shares herinsights into how the objective approach ofscience can be enriched by perspectives ofindigenous people. She discusses the needfor respect, balance, gratitude, humility, reciprocity with nature, and kinder ways of living on the earth.Kimmerer introduced the notion of the windigo, which many ofus thought provided interesting insight into the current situationin our society. Read the book to learn what it is. Everyonepresent agreed that the book was profound and beautifullywritten.

All are welcome to attend any of the NAAC Reading Circlemeetings. Please let Stephanie know of books by NativeAmericans and about the Native American experience that thegroup might want to read and discuss. Stephanie Feeney, Reading Circle Chair
