ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
President’s Report to Annual General Meeting 13th August 2014 ABRA’s major event this year was again the Australia Day Breakfast. Despite running this event successfully since 2006, we experienced some problems due to changes undertaken by Council which were not in our
planning this year. New banners were made up by council, without us having any input into their design. Not only were these not put up until a fortnight before the event, but they listed the times of the event as 8am – 11 am. In 2007 we had changed our event time to 8am – 10am because
a) we had run out of hot food by 10am, b) people want to get their breakfast early on Australia Day to get down onto the beach. (This has been more crucial of recent
years with ramp closures by mid morning and the event sometimes clashes with the Tour Down Under.) c) Funding allocated does not cover an additional hour hiring of band, face painters and other entertainment.
We had put up our old banners some weeks before that in the usual prominent places to give people prior notice. The new Council banners, when put in place, were poorly located and not easily seen. We were notified by the Council Governance officer that our old banners had to be
removed, even though they were correct, on the week before the event. Because of this error in publicity, we had people coming after 10am looking for breakfast when we had run out of food, the entertainment was finished and we were all packing up. Children were also disappointed that Council did not provide hand held flags this year at the event. The incoming committee will need to decide if we can continue to run this event without negotiating a change of the agreement with Council.
We’ve also had to increase our insurance cover from 10 to 20 million dollars for this event at extra cost.
Development issues dealt with over the last twelve months include:
On The Run application for extension of the service station in historic
Aldinga Township.
A fencing proposal for Silver Sands.
Roundabout and drainage construction for Dover Street.
The slip lane into Pridham Boulevarde and redesign and construction
of Quinliven Road past the Galilee Catholic School & church complex.
A bus stop shelter on Rowley Road at stop 117 adjacent to the
shopping centre.
The re-alignment of the Aldinga Beach Road and Esplanade
intersection.
Supporting SARA (Sellicks Area Residents Association) in their efforts to get a major sewage problem addressed. I applied for a release of a copy of the Council Governance Report on the issue through Freedom Of Information request on behalf of ABRA. (To no avail.) The issue is

ABRA is supporting the action group planning a Christmas Pageant on
Aldinga Beach with publicity and the Aldinga Bay Trade & Tourism Association (ABBTA) is also supporting them with logistical
assistance.
ABRA’s web presence has progressed, although much more slowly than I would like. We now have a copy of Coastal Views posted on the ABBTA website monthly. Our own planned web page has hit a stalemate with the web designer we had working for us being on extended leave. The new committee will need to look at considering employing another designer.
We also lobbied the Aldinga Community Centre to replace the internal notice boards removed during the upgrading and painting that was
done last Christmas holidays. ABRA’s offer of financial assistance in this matter was not taken up as the work was done through Council. There are now some new internal boards in the McArthur Lounge and café area.
I would like to thank the retiring committee for their work and support over the last twelve months and wish the new committee well.

In November last year Karl Jensen, (son of owners) frus-trated by a weed ridden unused wind house, formerly used
for potted bulbs, decided to convert the space into a new

was informed that he had won.
This vegie patch could be adapted to fit into any suburban garden. Come along and meet Karl, see his vegie patch,

THE SISTERS SWING INTO GEAR AGAIN. Sisters of Abundance Ladies Choir performed at the recent
Almond Blossom Festival showcasing some of their new
songs. Wearing scarves of bright orange, their perform-
ance reflected this cheerful colour. They began with a bit of razzle dazzle in the song “Shine”
from the film Billy Elliott which got people tapping their
toes. (Cont’d p16)

CANCER COUNCIL SA’S RELAY FOR LIFE—McLAREN VALE
OCTOBER 11 AND 12
Go Kan Ryu Karate Do (GKR) have been so inspired by the cause and the idea of this event that they have decided
to enter a team in the inaugural McLaren Vale Relay For
Life this October 11 and 12. As word spread within the worldwide Karate club so did the passion. The club has
now had so many of its members become involved it has
had to start its 3rd team of up to 15 to cater for everyone.
The event itself is to be held at the McLaren Vale Sport-
ing Complex starting at 2pm on October 11. The partici-
pants will walk or run around the oval for 19 hours straight
overnight in a relay format passing the baton between the
team members. This is to signify that Cancer does not sleep.
There will be live music, local trader stalls, kids activi-
ties, Martial Arts Demo’s and plenty of entertainment for everyone on the day. Part of the event will be a moving
memorial ceremony and a celebration for Survivors and
carers. It is going to be a most fulfilling experience and it is highly recommended to get on down and be a part of it.
If you can get 10 –15 people together that can walk and would like to be a part of this event please head to
www.relayforlife.org.au and register your team in the
McLaren Vale Relay today.
If you would like to be a part of this fantastic event but
cannot enter your own team we can put you in contact
with some like minded people and you can join an exist-ing team.
Donations can also be made on the website.
Check out this you tube link

Learn how to protect
your local environment
South Australia was once a biodiversity paradise featuring
more than 3500 native plant species, 140 mammal species and
460 bird species. Due to broadscale native vegetation clearance, up to 98 per
cent of our native bushland has been lost in some areas – and
with it, many plant, animal and bird species.
Trees For Life’s Bush For Life Program gives people from all
walks of life the opportunity to help preserve what little we
have left by learning how to restore and protect our State’s
native vegetation through bush regeneration workshops.
At the workshop, participants will learn:
why the bush needs your help;
the best strategies for restoring ecological processes;
minimal disturbance techniques;
how to work safely in the bush;
how you can get involved as a Bush For Life volunteer
Continuous learning opportunities are also provided through
the program, ensuring participants discover the best techniques to get native plants regenerating and how to defeat invasive
weeds. Bush For Life also holds advanced workshops which
cover topics such as native plant and grass identification,
advanced bush management techniques, brushcutting and
more.
Volunteers also choose how they want to be involved in the
longer term. They can participate in small group activities
every now and then, adopt a bushland site of their own or join
our Bush Action Team.
If you want to find out more about getting hands-on experience
through Bush For Life, phone the office on 8406 0500.
Being part of BFL just takes a small portion of your time, and passion – and the rewards are endless!

THE SISTERS SWING INTO GEAR AGAIN. (Cont’d)
This was followed by “Africa” by Toto. The beat of the African drums sure came through in this rendition. For
something different and challenging for the choir they
performed the song “Bring Me Little Water Sylvie” which is an old field holler from the southern states of
America. It was a total contrast to their other songs as the
girls say this in four part unaccompanied harmony. With
their next song they swung back to 1978 when disco was all the rage and Gloria Gaynor told us all “I will Survive”
which they performed with lively actions. They com-
pleted their set with a Celtic tune by Roger Emerson (Cont’d p25)

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact
Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace
incandescent globes) contain mercury.
If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this
can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous
results.
They should be disposed of properly through recycling.
Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points
are available at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga Environment Centre.
Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental
Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils state wide from sending these materials to landfill.
As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will
also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no longer be accepted as part of our hard waste collection.
The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource
Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the Council dump off South Road N of the bridge).
There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste
to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the

School for Dogs Aldinga Bay Inc. School for Dogs Aldinga Bay Inc. is a not-for-profit organisa-
tion run by volunteers. Our instructors are members of Austra-
lian Pet Dog Trainers Association. Our club uses positive rein-
forcement training methods and offers Good Manners training
as well as Obstacle Awareness training & a full Agility Course
for dogs. As well as offering low cost, positive reinforcement
training to the community, the club participates in community
events & in programs which raise awareness of & promote re-
sponsible pet ownership.
The Club recently attended Willunga Out of School Hours Care
(OSHC) to educate the children in safety around dogs, provide
information & answer questions regarding the care of their pet
dogs and to demonstrate how positive reinforcement training
can be used with an Agility and Good Manners display. The
children enjoyed the displays and were enthusiastic listeners,
asking lots of questions & giving good feedback.
The Club also attended this year’s Almond Blossom Festival, participating in the parade, putting on both
Agility & Good Manners displays and providing information
on site to the community regarding our services & the benefits
of positive reinforcement training. The crowds loved the dis-
plays and we had many enquiries regarding our services.

It’s Time For Night Owls! It’s almost time for the very popular Night Owls Bowling to
commence again at Aldinga Bay Bowling Club and players
are encouraged to register their teams of friends, family or
workmates to play in the very friendly and fun competition
held during summer daylight savings season.
With limited spaces available, teams need to register early.
Individuals or couples can also register and will be included in
teams needing players.
Corrine and her husband Alan, who live at Willunga, started
playing Night Owls last year after friends introduced them to
the very popular Aldinga competition.
After a couple of practices and meeting a few of the members,
Corinne and Alan became Social Members, and they thor-
oughly enjoyed their Night Owls season – so much so they’re
now looking forward to their first Pennant Competition as full
members.
Corinne says” It was great getting out on those warm summer
evenings, and playing bowls in a casual friendly atmosphere,
with people of all ages. “
Night Owls season will commence in mid October on
Wednesday evenings from 7pm with a sausage sizzle on offer
from 6.30pm.
For those players who don’t have their own bowls, the club
has several sets of loan bowls available. For those who are
new to bowls, members are always on hand to assist by
showing you how to get started.
In 2014 for the first time an additional Social Twilight Lawn
Bowls Competition will also be introduced for players
wanting an earlier starting time – from approx. 6.00pm.
To find out more about Night Owls or Twilight Bowls
Competition, phone John on 85576642 or 0417820596
New players are welcome to ‘roll up’ anytime during the
week too, with social bowling at the club on Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturday each week, with full bar facilities.
Complimentary coaching and bowls are also available.
Lawn bowls are now widely recognised as an activity for all
ages and President John Clissitt encourages anyone who is
new to Aldinga, or recently retired, or just wishing to meet
people, to come down to the club for a drink and chat in a
casual friendly atmosphere and have a go at bowls.
For the experienced bowlers, Aldinga Bay Bowling Club is
looking for Pennant Players for the upcoming Season where
teams play against many clubs from all over the Fleurieu
Peninsula. Women’s Pennant competition is held on Thurs-
day mornings from 10.00am till around 1.00pm and Open
Pennants is held on Saturday afternoon from around 1pm.
Everyone is welcome at Aldinga Bay Bowling Club!

The Washpool On June 15, celebrating World Environment Day &
World Oceans’ Day, there was a tour of the Aldinga
Washpool, hosted by Willunga Environment Centre, Friends of Willunga Basin and representatives of the
Kaurna People.
The Washpool Lagoon, located south of Aldinga Scrub
Conservation Park, is one of the last remaining coastal lagoons of its type along the metropolitan Adelaide coast-
line. Part of the Tjilbruke Dreaming Track, the lagoon is
home to many species of water birds and supports several conservation status plant species.
As a follow up to this, Chas Martin has set up a display
on the Washpool, at the Willunga Environment Centre, 18 High Street, Willunga.
If you are in the area or passing by, drop in and have a
look at the interesting material he has on display from past newspaper articles to recent, and some quite beauti-
ful, photographs of the area.
A further visit to the Washpool is
planned for Spring
and a notice will be sent out beforehand
as usual.

called “Riversong – a Celtic Celebration” accompanied by the haunting sound of a flute they sang about the river
of life to a lively tune which was sure to stir any Irish
heart. We really enjoy singing at local events like the Almond Blossom Festival and love watching the audience
tapping their toes or clapping along with us.
The choir have welcomed some new members who have
joined us in recent months. We hope the new girls are enjoying being part of our group. Ladies, if you like to
sing and can hold a tune you are welcome to join us. We
are a community choir and always welcome ladies who would like to get out there and sing with us. Experience is

Spring awakening
and the gifts of the seasons.
The season of spring is about renewal, which is some-
thing to look forward to through a long, cold, and wet winter.
Willunga Waldorf School students are currently channeling
their anticipation for Spring into creative art, which will cele-
brate themes of environment, community, interconnectedness
and new life.
Willunga Uniting Church is joining the students in this
community project, seeking ways to dialogue common values through creative expression.
Every September, Willunga Uniting Church makes its gallery
space available to local schools interested in displaying student
art.
This year, an exhibition of artwork by students from
Willunga Waldorf School will be displayed in Bethany Hall
and throughout the church building from Friday 5 September.
This collaborative exhibition is entitled 'Gifts of the Seasons'.
Waldorf students of all ages will be involved in the exhibition,
with some older, high school-aged students focusing particu-
larly on creating work relating to the Psalms of the bible.
Through this focus, students have engaged in conversations about environmental stewardship, social responsibility, envi-
ronmental and social sustainability, and questions around how
to make the world a more compassionate place.
Rebecca Hicks, art teacher at the Waldorf school relates
“Our curriculum strives to awaken social responsibility and
service to the community and much of what we do as a matter
of course seems to comfortably align with the messages within
Psalms 104 and 138,”
The exhibition will not be the only community event
happening at Willunga Uniting Church in September.
On Saturday, 6th of September, the day following the launch of the art exhibition, the Willunga congregation will hold their
Annual Spring Fair. A variety of food and craft stalls, bric-a-
brac, plant sales, games, activities and much more will form
part of the event.
Willunga Waldorf School students will also participate
in this event, performing their own music compositions on the
day.
The weekend will be a celebration of the spirit of crea-
tivity, community and the gifts of the seasons.
The Willunga Waldorf School art exhibition will be
launched at 6pm on Friday 5 September in Bethany Hall, adja-
cent to the Willunga Uniting Church building. The exhibition will be open to the public each Saturday
in September from 9am to 12 midday.
The Willunga Uniting Church Annual Spring Fair will
be held on Saturday 6 September from 10am to 3pm in Bell
Paddock (corner of St Andrews Terrace and St Judes Street),
adjacent to Willunga Uniting Church

WILLUNGA 100 WINES HIT THE HILL The Willunga175 committee reminds you that the
Willunga 100 Wines Hit the Hill bike time trial will be
held on Sunday 7th September. The time trials will begin
at 9.00 am, with the slowest going first and the elite Cycling SA teams finishing off at around midday.
BILLY CART RACES
Also on Sunday 7th September, billy cart races will commence at 11 am and will be overseen by past Apex
members in conjunction with the WBTA. They are open
to young people aged 14 – 18 and, as there are limited positions available, those wanting to participate should
enter early to make sure they don’t miss out.
Email [email protected] .
While there could be positions still available on the day, that is not guaranteed. There will also be a celebrity race
featuring local politicians and other identities.
Participants will need to provide their own bike or motor-cycle helmet, and wear clothing that covers arms and
legs.
And if all that sounds too strenuous, just come along and cheer on your favourite riders and billy cart drivers.
Food and wine will be available from local stores
throughout the day.
HISTORY WALKS On 19 September, the Willunga Primary School is
organising a series of walks to various historical sites
around Willunga, in conjunction with the National Trust. These walks will be the culmination of a series of lessons
about the history of Willunga. Students will be split up
into groups, completing several walks before finishing with a picnic at the Old Courthouse.
WILLUNGA175 RAFFLE TICKETS
STILL AVAILABLE
Tickets are $2.00 each or $20.00 per book (10 tickets) and are available from various local outlets including
Minko Wines, Caltex service station, Clippers, Office &
Image, and Willunga175 committee members. Great prizes to be won, thanks to our sponsors.
THE SISTERS SWING INTO GEAR AGAIN. (Cont’d)
not necessary – half the choir can’t read music so you wouldn’t be alone. It is great fun and gives us all some
time out from family one night a week.
The coming weeks are looking very busy for the Sisters as they are now in rehearsal -mode working hard towards
their 2014 concert “Sisters in Concert” on Sunday 28th
September. They have quite a few miles to travel before
then as they learn new songs which they will perform for the first time, as well as giving some of their old favour-
ites an airing and a bit of a polish. Extra practices will be
organised to ensure everyone is well and truly prepared for the big day. (Cont’d p 37)
