Morning Enquiry
We were trying to make a really big city with Lego –
Nikolai and Randal
During morning inquiry time this term, we have been engaging in a variety of activities and provocations,
to further touch on our current learning investigations, as well as help us to get to know each
other better. These are some of the activities we have been doing:
We were looking at shells and things inside them. We listened to
the ocean – Mali and Dan
We were drawing pictures of monsters – Taylen, Taya and
Suzie
We were making patterns in the sand and making a town – Abbie, Leilani, Hayley
and Tahlia

ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION Dear Reader, The Shahin application to upgrade our current, decrepit service station at the entrance to Aldinga to a massive, ‘On The Run’ complex has become a very devisive issue in the community. The Development Application Panel rejected the application because it is inappropriate in a historic township zone. This zoning was set up to try and preserve some of our rapidly disappearing heritage. Obviously many newer residents are unaware of the importance of the township in our history. I wonder if they realise that the post office from which the telegraph messages were sent during the Star Of Greece wreck disaster is still there in the town? Do they stop and wonder why a town the size of Aldinga had two hotels, one of which is beautifully restored right alongside the proposed ultra-modern commercial development? Are they aware that the original blacksmith shop and undertaker, strategically located on the junction of the original South Road with Old Coach Road is still largely there for all to see along with the original Adelaide Bank? Do they realise that the Uniting Church cemetery has a grave for the souls who lost their lives in the Star Of Greece tragedy? Because of this zoning, existing businesses are restricted in their construction and signage to retain the ambience of the historic township. What a slap in the face to them if the development is allowed to go ahead. Council landscaping and beautification plans for the town, which have been subject to local consultation, are also based on enhancing its heritage value. What consultation rights have we been given by the Shahin corporation? The ‘On The Run’ owners are not the least bit interested in any of this. They see it as a way to make more money from the passing trade on South Road. Surely this development would generate extra employment in an area where it is sadly lacking, but what facilities are they offering that we do not already have? The Southern Community Coalition and Friends of Port Willunga, along with all the other individuals who objected to this proposal, are not objecting to the provision of the facility and are not anti-development but strongly pointing out that it is IN THE WRONG LOCATION. I fear the residents who started the current petition to approve the application are looking at one side of the picture. Land on the corner of Aldinga Beach Road, which is due to be released, would be much more suitable for a development like this from both a zoning and access perspective, where there is room to incorporate it into the re-construction of the road and corner. I hope you enjoy the issue. Kevin Hutton - President & Editor

JULIE
Witch way to run?
What would you think if you saw a young lady run terrified from a church meeting – in full witch’s gear - eyes and everything else black, except the red lips?
It was just a normal service. But Julie freaked out. Probably, she just wasn’t used to love and acceptance.
She had been a street kid in Hindley Street with skin heads, rockers; then warlocks and witches for friends. Her coven life (with all the crystal balls, runes and tarot cards etc.,) led her to even heavier drinking and more serious drug abuse. She would awake some mornings with visible evidence of bites and scratches on her body. Demons are very real she says.
Julie had missed the normal bonding with her army parents, in Singapore during the Vietnam War. And later in Australia, the disruption to her schooling (due to the continual army re-postings), plus various personal dramas and foster parents, gave her an acute sense of disorientation, rejection and isolation. She decided not to try to make school friends because she knew she would have to leave them behind.
Years later, the popular Left Behind series became the catalyst for her change. It’s about the Rapture, when Jesus comes back for his believers, and everyone else is left behind to face the great tribulation. After watching the video, Julie did what she knew she had to do – and long story short – is now the receptionist for the church she ran away from, relocated in Hackham.

William George Field (From “William George Field R.N. ‘Out From Light’s
Shadow’ ” by Dr. Jeff Nicholas.) (This was sent in by a reader, but I have lost track of who it was to acknowledge them - my apologies to that person.
Ed) Born in Devon, England 1807, William Field joined the Royal Navy in 1819. He passed the Lieutenant exam in 1826. He was commissioned in 1832. He served in the gunship Ocean and was made Lieutenant of the Flagship H.M.S. Howe in 1835. Field became First Officer of the brig Rapid, the survey vessel for the South Australia Commissioners; retiring from the Royal Navy on half pay in 1890 and proceeded to South Australia with Colonel William Light with a promise of command of the Rapid on arrival at Kangaroo Island.
He discovered the river Onkaparinga (Col. Light called this “Field”s River”.) He was on the first party to see the River Torrens. (Sept 1836) He laid down the first buoys in the Port River (23 Nov) He escorted Governor Hindmarsh to view the new (Old) Port of which he was so proud.
Field took the Rapid on several trips to other colonies for supplies over the next few years. Many livestock were lost this way and an overland stock route became imperative. Field was one of the first to propose this. He was later the first South Australian to arrive with cattle from NSW (1838).
In 1837 Field was allocated land in Gouger, Wright, Gilbert and Halifax Streets during the town survey, plus two parcels of land in North Adelaide in Archer Street and Brougham Place. He took the first export produce from the colony (150 gallons of whale oil) to England in the Rapid in November 1837. He convinced some nearby crewmen to help him rescue 2 sailors who were in danger in exceedingly bad weather, by manning a small boat, rowing to them and bringing them safely back to the pier. He was later awarded a medal for bravery, for this and other instances where he had saved lives.
From 1838 on, Field and his brother made several overland droving trips with cattle. In 1840 however, droving a large flock of sheep, Henry Inman was speared by Aborigines, who had also been killing some of the sheep for food, while the flock passed through their territory. Previous overland droves had been cattle. Field organised a retaliatory party. Their 14 horsemen were confronted by 200+ Aboriginal warriors and although
field mortally shot the leader, he and his horse, along with others, were injured by spears and the party retreated, lucky not to lose their lives.
“Captain Field”, as he had become known, settled down to mixed farming at Mt. Barker He was made responsible for the Mt. Barker Agricultural reports to the Governor and was highly regarded by the local community.
Field married in 1841 at Yankalilla (They lived on 2 x 80 acres of leased Aboriginal reserve land at Hay Flat.) Field then bought 40 acres freehold overlooking the previous 160 acres extending from Yankalilla creek to Waitpinga along the Parawa Range in 1845). He was made a JP and responsible for the Yankalilla Agricultural reports to the Governor. The home he built there, (Adderbury Cottage) was regarded as imposing by colonial standards.
He died of tuberculosis (as did Colonel Light) in 1850.
Caleb Lovelock. (source unknown)
For 51 years a resident of Aldinga, Mr. Caleb Love-lock has at all times evinced a marked interest in all branches of local activities. He has served the District Council for the past eight years as Chairman. Mr. Lovelock was appointed a Justice of the Peace in August, 1921, and is Chairman of the local Agricultural Bureau, Vice-President of the Willunga Agricultural Society,' Trustee of the Aldinga Institute, and for a time was Chairman of the local Repatriation and Soldiers' Me-morial Committees. Also he is Trustee of the local Methodist Church.

Learn how to protect your local environment
South Australia was once a biodiversity paradise featuring more than 3500 native plant species, 140 mammal species and 460 bird species. Due to broadscale native vegetation clearance, up to 98 per cent of our native bushland has been lost in some areas – and with it, many plant, animal and bird species. Trees For Life’s Bush For Life Program gives people from all walks of life the opportunity to help preserve what little we have left by learning how to restore and protect our State’s native vegetation through bush regeneration workshops. At the workshop, participants will learn: x why the bush needs your help; x the best strategies for restoring ecological processes; x minimal disturbance techniques; x how to work safely in the bush; how you can get involved as a Bush For Life volunteer Continuous learning opportunities are also provided through the program, ensuring participants discover the best techniques to get native plants regenerating and how to defeat invasive weeds. Bush For Life also holds advanced workshops which cover topics such as native plant and grass identification, advanced bush management techniques, brushcutting and more. Volunteers also choose how they want to be involved in the longer term. They can participate in small group activities every now and then, adopt a bushland site of their own or join our Bush Action Team. If you want to find out more about getting hands-on experience through Bush For Life, phone the office on 8406 0500. Being part of BFL just takes a small portion of your time, and passion – and the rewards are endless! 2014 Dates: One Day Workshops Friday 6 June, Clare Saturday 21 June, Hallett Cove Friday 4 July, Brooklyn Park Wednesday 23 July, Mitcham Hills Saturday 9 August, Littlehampton Sunday 17 August, Norton Summit Thursday 21 August, Playford Wednesday 10 September, Willunga Saturday 20 September, Brooklyn Park Wednesday 8 October, Strathalbyn Tuesday 14 October, Burnside Saturday 22 November, Brooklyn Park

Aldinga Beach CFS
Aldinga Beach 34 appliance Isuzu dual cab - seats 6 Holds 3000L of water 2x Breathing Appa-ratus sets With an open crew deck on the back - which holds up to 4 people Is 4WD - Capable of moving over most terrain Built by Frazer and delivered to Aldinga Beach C.F.S in 2012 Aldinga Beach 34 appliance is a urban/rural appliance. 34 is our main appliance for bushfires and acts as a backup appliance to our 34P for house & structure fires, providing extra crew, hoses, breathing apparatus and water. The open crew deck on the rear of 34 allows Aldinga Beach crew to fight running grass fires. The crew deck is fitted with two 38 size hoses and a monitor nozzle. The monitor is a high powered nozzle that produces a very strong stream of wa-ter (much stronger than a normal fire fighting hose) which is very handy when we need water to reach inaccessible areas eg. burning trees that cannot be reached by foot or by the water from our regular hoses. The pump can also be controlled from the crew deck enabling crews to adjust the pressure of the water without having to leave the crew deck. At the rear of this appliance are two side lines (hose reel & nozzle setup) one on each side of the truck. Each side line is 60m in length and they are used by crew to fight slower moving fires on foot. Side lines are also used for "Blacking out". This involves moving through fire af-fected areas (Once the main fire has been controlled) en-suring fire is fully extinguished and won't re-ignite. At times Aldinga Beach 34 and crew can be sent to other areas to assist with major fires. Crews can be away for up to 5 days. Occasionally during larger incidents change over crews can be also be sent. This year Aldinga Beach CFS volunteers along with our 34 appliance attended fires at Delamere, Bangor, Eden Valley and also a number of fires here at home including a fire in the Aldinga Scrub and a fire on the Sellicks Beach Foreshore on New Years Eve.

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace incandescent globes) contain mercury. If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous results. They should be disposed of properly through recycling. Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points are available at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga Environment Centre.
Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils state wide from sending these materials to landfill. As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no longer be accepted as part of our hard waste collection.
The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the Council dump off South Road N of the bridge). There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the Ewaste section. You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip depositing the card they issue you with. This card will take you off their computer.
This can be done any day of the week.

Talking Health with Kelly Harding ND
Not Firing On All Four Cylinders? Do you struggle through the day feeling fatigued, in pain or just plain fed up? If you wake up in the morning with exhaustion, experience cramping or muscular aches, pains, backaches or headaches your body may be crying out for more magnesium. A magnesium deficiency may cause symptoms and disorders affecting nerves, muscles, bones, the cardiovascular system and metabolism. Stress can also increase the body’s demand of magnesium, leaving you depleted and with lower reserves of this important mineral.
Magnesium – the Wonder Mineral Magnesium is an essential mineral which is vital for producing energy to fire every cell in your body, so you function at your best. When you are deficient in magnesium, it can exacerbate feelings of exhaustion and heighten the intensity of pain and inflammation. If you have ever suffered from symptoms of pain, muscular cramps, headaches, fatigue or even fibromyalgia, you may have increased requirements for magnesium. It plays a key role in preventing insulin dysregulation and type 2 diabetes.
Pain, Pain Go Away! If you experience pain and tenderness, magnesium is your mineral. Whether you have muscle soreness after exercise, a headache after a long hard day at work, period pain, or are suffering from the common chronic pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, magnesium can help you manage your pain. This important mineral also helps your muscles to relax, so they are not tense, stiff and angry. Magnesium plays a role in moving fluid into the cells of all of your tissues, to make sure they are fully hydrated in order to function optimally. Magnesium deficiency can lead to more inflammation in the body, causing more pain; another good reminder to maintain your magnesium levels. Early signs of magnesium deficiency may include headaches, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting, and fatigue or weakness. However, ongoing magnesium deficiency can lead to far more serious symptoms such as:
x Abnormal heart rhythms and coronary spasms x Muscle cramps and contractions x Seizures x Numbness and tingling x Personality changes
Inadequate magnesium intake creates a vicious cycle of low magnesium levels in your body, elevated insulin and blood glucose levels, and excess loss of magnesium in your urine The best source of magnesium is whole, organic foods, especially dark green leafy vegetables; other good sources include seaweed, dried pumpkin seeds, unsweetened cocoa, flaxseed, almond butter, and whey

Senior Health For many people, the years creep by and our pets have aged before we realise it. This ageing process is important because many diseases in both dogs and cats will appear from the age of 7 years and onwards. For every one human year dogs age 7 years, and cats 5 years – meaning at 7-years-old they are equivalent to a 50-year-old person – the age most of us begin to have more frequent health checks!
Senior Health Monitoring – why is it important? Many diseases in older dogs and cats will progress rapidly because of the faster ageing process. This means that a 12-monthly health check may not be frequent enough for the early identification of disease conditions. Many diseases can be present without initially causing outward symptoms in your pet – recognition of these conditions before they do cause more serious health concerns is vital. The best way to accomplish this is via regular health examinations; and for the older pet we recommend this happen every 6 months. Common diseases we see in the older pet are: arthritis; dementia; dental, heart, kidney and liver disease; among many others. So what does monitoring involve? Your senior canine or feline friend needs a thorough physical examination every 6 months. At this senior check-up, we assess the oral cavity (for dental disease), examine your pet’s eyes and ears, their chest is examined (to check for lung or heart changes) and the abdomen is thoroughly palpated to check for internal organ change or lumps/masses. The lymph nodes, core body temperature and gum colour are also checked. We assess skin health, joint health and the nails. At every second check-up (i.e. 12 monthly) we will run blood and urine tests to assess internal organ function (eg kidneys, liver, hormonal diseases such as diabetes and so on) and to check the white and red blood cell levels. This allows for early diagnosis, discussion, and treatment of any conditions present which can lead to an improved prognosis for the long-term outcome, and a better quality of life for your ageing pet. How do you get started? All senior health consults will be 30 minutes in length to allow for a thorough exam and discussion of any problems found. Senior Pet Blood Tests (including a urinalysis) are offered at a discounted rate (over $50 in savings compared to normal laboratory fees). For questions or to book a consult, phone us at: Willunga Veterinary Services: (08) 8556 2075; or Aldinga Veterinary Services: (08) 8556 5498

Aldinga Market moves for the winter season
From May 25th onwards the original and best Aldinga Bay Market will be held at an exciting new location – The Aldinga Institute, which is located on Old Coach Road at Aldinga, next to the Aldinga Hotel. As we are all well aware the weather in Aldinga in winter is very inclement so our stall holders were very keen to find a cosy warm place to continue trading throughout the year. The Aldinga Institute management came to the rescue. The interior of the Institute which is also heated can
accommodate approx 30 stalls and there is also lots of space outside on the northern sheltered side of the Hall, for more stalls. The Aldinga Bay Market Committee decided that this was the best option open to us, to enable us to continue this popular market through the winter months. This is an exciting new stage for the Market. The Aldinga Business and Tourism Association wishes to thank Aldinga Central Management who very generously gave the ABBTA a free lease to hold the Market on their property which was integral to giving life to the Market we now enjoy. We will still have the regular favourites; face painter, coffee, BBQ, cupcakes olives oils and other fine foods. The opening hours are 9am – 2pm on the fourth Sunday of the Month. We invite you to come and enjoy our cosy new venue which will undoubtedly attract many more interesting traders as well.
Call out for New Stallholders Please contact the Coordinator on: [email protected] or call ph. 8557 8509
The Editor, Dear Sir, I was pleased to see my garden paths all topsy-turvy with holes of varying depth and width. This was no outer-space visitation. This was clear sign that my random visitor of many years, a charming and often amusing echidna was still very much alive and doing the rounds despite an increase in fences and yapping dogs.
His 'misdemeanours' in search of termites include turning over substantial logs and stones, in the course of which I have been able to move within a bootlength of my spiky visitor, whose concentration on his foody pursuit is total. "By all means watch but do not distract me, this is a matter of life and death".
Stay with it kiddy, glad to see you again.
Robb Mack Aldinga Beach
Thanks Robb. In the last few years our yard and garden have been blissfully bereft of snails. The inhabiting (and reproducing) blue tongues in our garden seem to like our strawberries just as much however, and blissfully munch away, looking at us frowning at them. Bird netting is obviously no deterrent. - Ed

A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking

A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris

Morris replied, 'Just doing what you said, Doc: 'Get a

The doctor said, 'I didn't say that.. I said, 'You've got

Uniting Communities’ Family Mental Health Support Service (FMHSS) is an early intervention and prevention program for children, young people and their families in the Onkaparinga area. The service is focussed on the healthy development of children and young people. It aims to enhance wellbeing and prevent and reduce incidence of mental illness. The service works with families to identify and build on children and young people’s strengths, to expand their family resources and develop a greater sense of connection to their community. This program is specifically for children and young people aged 0-18 years and their families. Diagnosis of a mental health issue is not required and neither is a referral.
Sometimes children and young people can by affected by issues such as relationship difficulties or family breakdown; family mental health issue; drug and alcohol issues; domestic violence; child abuse or neglect; bullying; loss and grief; financial issues and moving house. You may have noticed disturbed sleep; over-eating or not eating; changes in behaviour withdrawal or angry outbursts; an outpouring of emotions, crying, extra clingy behaviour; school issues or changes in peer group. The FMHSS program provides short and longer term services. These include individual counselling for the child or young person in conjunction with family; case management; the development of a Family Action Plan and practical in home support eg assistance with school attendance; provision of information, referral and support in accessing services; education and group work, community development and building meaningful networks.
The Family Mental Health Support Service focuses on the child or young person’s wellbeing;; provides practical assistance; conducts home visits; supports children, young people and their families to develop the skills needed to navigate everyday life. FMHSS is a respectful and confidential service. Since the commencement of 2014, FMHSS team members have been working within the Aldinga and Sellicks community to engage with children, young people and their families through free activity sessions and community engagement events
If you would like to use our service and talk about your circumstances, please use the contact details above to make a time to meet with one of our team members.

It brings events to the southern region to
foster a vital and diverse arts culture. This
includes a scholarship system, art
exhibitions, and support for incredible
events like the Da Ponte Mozart Project
where State Opera Stars will perform
popular Mozart arias on May 24th at the
McLaren Vale Institute. The year 2014
started with beautiful folk belly dancing by
local dancer Cathy Phillips. It was a
performance which launched “Curtain Up”, when the audience was also entranced
with the exquisite string music of Eva and
Minas Berberyan. The indefatigable
magician , Wayne Anthony, then
mesmerised with his turkey magic. As
always, the bar was available and
wonderful food.
Oh, there is so much to look forward to

there is the Cancer Morning Tea which
has become a traditional event at
