Aldersga e A significant place where disciples are made 2018

Now that the weather has cooled down a good bit, we’ll be firing up our fire pit more often. We also have the annual church hay ride and bonfire in the middle of the month. Have you ever watched a fire begin to burn down to the point that all you have left are coals? It looks as though there is no fire actually left, because the coals may be under a layer of ash. You can't really see much. But when you take a fresh log and toss it on top of those coals and stir it around a bit, suddenly it ignites, and you have a whole new fire going. Paul wrote to Timothy, "Stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands" (2 Timothy 1:6). That phrase stir up the gift means to fan it into full flame. There may be live coals in your life, but you may have allowed the fire to go down. Perhaps you haven't been using the gifts that God has given you, the talents He has given you, as much as you could. Now’s the time to fan them into full flame again. It's time to be reignited. It's time to say, "Lord, how can I use what You have given me for Your glory?" We need to take advantage of the opportunities that are out there. I pray we will humble ourselves and take what we’ve been given and offer it in service to God. If we are willing to do what He has set before us and be faithful in the little things, then He will give us so much more to do. I pray we’ll take a chance even if we fail. You know, it's better to try and fail than to have never tried at all. Let’s throw a log on those seemingly dormant coals and see just what happens!

God bless each of you this fall!

Finance Committee

Who comprises the Finance Committee? (Parentheses indicate term expiration)

As of the end of August both our contributions and total income were less than planned and less than last year at the end of August. Expenses thankfully were also less than planned and less than last year’s spending. The bottom line is that we have a loss of over $44,000 which is about the same as a year ago. On a positive note, the spending by both SPRC and Trustees were less than planned and also below last year. At the end of September, we are planning on sending out Contribution Statements. So we all have a couple of weeks to catch up on our Pledged Giving for 2018. I know the holiday giving season seems far off at the moment but time seems to fly by. For those individuals who use Amazon Smile, they will donate a portion of your purchases to a favorite charity – Aldersgate United Methodist Church (make sure you pick the Wilmington, DE location as there are a number of churches listed). Amazon will donate 0.5 percent of proceeds from eligible purchases. While individually this is not a significant amount, collectively it can mount up. Electronic giving options:

Online – Make a donation on our website: www.Aldersgatede.org

Text to Donate – Make a donation via Text message! 302-213-6168

Of course, checks and cash are always preferred.

Aldersgate is committed to being good stewards of your faithful contributions.

United Methodist Church Social Principles

“Taking an active stance in society is nothing new for followers of John

Wesley. He set the example for us to combine personal and social piety. Ever since predecessor churches to United Methodism flourished in the United States, we have been known as a denomination involved in people’s lives with political and social struggles, having local and international mission implications. Such involvement is an expression of the personal change we experience in our baptism and conversion.

The United Methodist Church believes God’s love for the world is an active and engaged love, a love

seeking justice and liberty. We cannot just be observers. So, we care enough about people’s lives to risk interpreting God’s love, to take a stand, to call each of us into a response, no matter how controversial or com-plex. The church helps us think and act out a faith perspective, not just responding to all other ‘mind-makers-up’ that exist in our society.” Excerpt from The Book of Resolutions of the United Methodist Church 2016.

To help guide us in how we think and act and are engaged in the world, the United Methodist Church has

created statements to guide the church in its efforts to create a world of justice. “Our Social Creed” is a basic statement of our convictions about the fundamental relationships between God, God’s creation and humanity. This basic statement is expanded in a lengthier statement called the “Social Principles.”

A draft of the Revised Social Principles has been released. The draft and the mechanism for submitting comments may be found at www.umcjustice.org. Please take a look. Please remember, if you have special prayers concerns, you can share them on the pew cards during worship at all services. We hope to see you at church.

Khristopher, Abbie and Jessica Townsend

Khris and Reecca have been married for

seventeen years. They have enjoyed

participating in Aldersgate’s family activities

with their daughter Abbie for several years.

They are excited to become members of the

church this year.

Rob Mc Farland Director of Music

I grew up on Thomas Road in Fairfax, attending Brandywine High School, and grew up in the

church, including Grace Church downtown, St. David’s Episcopal, and Richardson Park

UMC. After graduating, I attended Troy (State) University, earning a Bachelor of Science in

Music and Education. I have served UMC’s in Pensacola, FL and Greer, SC, along the way earn-

ing a Master of Arts in Worship Studies from Liberty Seminary. In addition to serving Al-

dersgate as Director of Music, I serve part time as the Contemporary Worship Leader at Rich-ardson Park UMC, and I occasionally preach in their contemporary service. I have one son,

Camden Hensley, who is 12 years old.

My main focus as the Director of Music is to

create an atmosphere of participation in

worship, so that all who attend, whether in the

pew or on the platform, are engaged in

meaningful worship of The Lord. I have

significant experience in both Traditional and

Contemporary worship settings, and have led

worship in churches of sizes varying from 20 to

over 1000. I am particularly fond of large

musical outreach events, and I am looking

forward to our Christmas Concert! If you would

like to participate in the ministry of music, in any

capacity, please be in touch, and lets find the

place God is calling you serve.
