A delightful combination of contrasting works fromBeethoven’s early, middle, and late periods, theBelceas bring the second of their major year-longproject to perform and record all Beethovenquartets, here at Snape.

It is hard to believe that, at the time of composingOp.59 in 1806, the quartets met with someresistance among audiences – today, we hear them asharmonically rich and wonderfully balanced in layout.

Clarity of form is a common feature between themiddle and the late quartet, Op.131; in contrast the early Op.18 No.2, is almost a small concerto inplaces, with several virtuoso passages from the first violin.

Faster Than Sound:I Burn for YouAfter Dracula by Bram Stoker

‘I Burn for You’ is an atmospheric new music theatrework inspired by Bram Stoker’s legendary vampirenovel Dracula, created by composer Ian Wilson,librettist Joe O’Byrne and stage director Tom Creed.

It brings together an astonishing line up ofperformers including the Hungarian death metalvocalist Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Sunn O))), and Voidof Voices) – whose remarkable voice has beendescribed as operatic – in the vampyric role.

Aldeburgh Music’s new cross-arts winterweekend – curated by Gareth Evans andcelebrating the cultures of place across theUK – takes to the waters this year with awide-ranging exploration of the meanings ofthe marine, the estuarine and the waterwayin film, art, literature and thought.

Starting from Roger Deakin’s modern classicon swimming, Waterlog, a remarkableassembly of acclaimed writers, artists, film-makers and thinkers will reflect on theparamount importance of the fluid spaces ofthe planet, in a unique location shaped soprofoundly by the tide and its impacts.

We finish with presentations by – and discussionswith – artists and curators Ben Eastop, RachelLichtenstein, Manu Luksch and Simon Read, all ofwhom have engaged directly with the waterscapes ofthe country in innovative, creative ways. Hugo Herbert-Jones has become an Aldeburghlegend, with his house and hospitality being a focalpoint for visiting young artists for over a generation.It is estimated he has provided over 3000 nights ofaccommodation for musicians, and his generositycontinues with games of croquet and pots ofhome-made marmalade thrown in.

A Celebration of Schools’ MusicThis year sees us celebrate the 25th anniversary ofthe first Celebration, and the unique and long-standing partnership between Aldeburgh Music andSuffolk County Council.

The week-long Celebration brings together schoolsfrom across Suffolk to provide us with a glimpse ofthe quality of music-making happening in theclassroom across the county. About 1500 pupilsfrom 50 schools will perform every kind of musicimaginable – all ages and all abilities are broughttogether in this musical extravaganza.

To celebrate this significant anniversary, we haveinvited Pete Letanka back to create a special Finalepiece for the end of each evening’s performance.Working with visual artists, Butch Auntie, this year’sFinale will bring the Concert Hall alive, celebratingthe past, present and future of this remarkable event.

The third in the Belcea’s bold year-long project toperform and record all Beethoven quartets.

This concert features three works united byBeethoven’s search for new forms that would betterexpress the ambitious architecture he had in mind for his quartets.

Whereas the earliest quartet features the robusthumour of a Scherzo as the middle movement, Op.59No.3 offers a light and graceful Menuetto. The lateOp.132, then, provides a perfect stage for the Belceasto show their dramatic range, from the tender Trio tothe divine Adagio and the highly expressive Finale.

Easter WeekendTwo compositions that erect monuments tovocal music in search of utmost expressionframe a Beethoven recital by pianist,Elisabeth Leonskaja who makes a welcomereturn, following her acclaimed Aldeburghdebut in the 2011 Festival.

Beethoven’s Ninth is a work that at the sametime emphatically fulfills, and transcends theconfines of the classical symphony; thislighthouse for symphonic developments tocome later in the 19th century is interpreted,with appropriate verve, by the Britten–PearsOrchestra and soloists with dynamic youngconductor, Antonello Manacorda.

The two performances of Beethoven’s ode to the joy, then, find a substantialcounterweight in his last three pianosonatas, performed here by ElisabethLeonskaja with her trademark ability to bring out, with elegance, the underlyingmusical architecture.

Like the Ninth symphony, Beethoven’s last three pianosonatas seem to strain at the bonds of a classicalstyle, often breaking them completely. Heardindividually these are startlingly original, profoundand direct utterances; collectively, they form a titanic triptych.

Elisabeth Leonskaja’s Aldeburgh debut at the 2011Festival made a powerful impression, testament to anextraordinary technique but also to a free-thinking,spirited musicianship. Beethoven Quartet Op.59 No.1 in F; Quartet Op.18No.4 in C minor; Quartet Op.135 in F

The quartet Op.59 No.1 is a good example forBeethoven’s compositional approach – first singledout as early as 1813 by E.T.A. Hoffmann – to baseevery movement on a simple but rich theme thatwould evoke ‘in a restless flight, the most wonderfulimages’. Indeed, the finale features a Russianfolksong as homage to the quartet’s dedicatee,Russian Count Razumovsky. The fourth quartet fromOp.18 swings between pathos and sentiment,whereas only a few, bright colours are carefully usedin Op.135 – which was to be Beethoven’s lastquartet, and very personal summary of the genre.

Open Session: AYMAdventures with Tradition

What does it mean to play traditional music in this dayand age? Can folk idioms have any relevance to presentday life or is such immersion in the past a form ofhistorical re-enactment? And why would forward-looking contemporary musicians choose to revisit aforgotten world of fair maids and rambling sailors?

The award-winning folk big band, Bellowhead, ismade up of musicians with backgrounds in jazz,world, contemporary classical and electronica as well as folk music. Since 2004, they have been on a mission to bring the old-time popular music ofBritain to a wider audience. Members of Bellowheadwill collaborate with Aldeburgh Young Musicians tocreate new works, contemporary in nature but withtheir roots in the past.

65th Aldeburgh FestivalSince the first Aldeburgh Festival in 1948, the Suffolkcoast has become a world-renowned meeting placefor classical music lovers. Every year, the Festivalboasts an impressive programme of superb concerts,recitals, master-classes, films, lectures, walks, andfree events in Snape, Aldeburgh and on the beach.

Aldeburgh World OrchestraSpecially created for the London 2012Festival (the culmination of the London 2012Cultural Olympiad), the Aldeburgh WorldOrchestra brings together acclaimed Britishconductor, Sir Mark Elder and 124 top-calibreyoung artists (18–29 years) from across theglobe, to create a true ‘world orchestra’.

Comprising approximately equal numbers ofparticipants from the UK, Europe, theAmericas, Asia and the Middle East, Oceaniaand Africa, the Orchestra builds onAldeburgh’s unrivalled reputation as aninternational centre for the development of

musical talent through the Britten–PearsYoung Artist Programme, which is forty yearsold in 2012.

The AWO will perform some of the mostthrilling orchestral repertoire of the last 100years, including Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring,the Sinfonia da Requiem by Britten andShostakovich’s Symphony No.5, plus musicby Mahler. The orchestral sections will betutored by a galaxy of international orchestralprincipals.

After Snape the AWO tours to Amsterdam,Ingolstadt and London.

Britten Sinfonia da RequiemStravinsky The Rite of Spring

One of the most famous seismic shocks in musicalhistory – the arrival of Stravinsky’s elemental,shattering ballet score for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes– caused a riot on its first performance. Controversysurrounded the Sinfonia da Requiem before a notehad been even played. The 26 year old Britten hadbeen commissioned by the Japanese Government fora piece to celebrate the 2600th anniversary of theJapanese Empire. What they got was a heartfelt andangry response to the tragedy and violence of war inwhich the influence of both Stravinsky and Mahlerare absorbed into an entirely new musical voice.

Exchanging WorldsA celebration of musical talent as part of the London 2012 Festival

In addition to its concerts, the Aldeburgh WorldOrchestra will inspire a day-long celebration ofmusical talent at Snape Maltings on 22 July, as partof Exchanging Worlds.

This multi-dimensional project connects the AWO tothe young people of Suffolk and the Eastern region,through a technology project and the creation of anelite performance ensemble of under 18s.

AWO members will be invited to record and uploadaudio snapshots that reflect their diverse lives andcultures. Five Suffolk-based groups of young peoplewill create their own music inspired by these soundsamples. The project will culminate in an interactiveinstallation and a live performance.

Additionally, a new creative performance ensembleformed by Aldeburgh Young Musicians makes itsdebut, drawing its members from the most talented8–18 year olds in the East of England, and bringingtogether musical influences from across the world.

Through collaborative working and the exchange ofglobal musical conversations, new work will becreated for performance.

Exchanging Worlds has been funded by Legacy TrustUK, an independent charity set up to help build alasting cultural and sporting legacy from the London2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games across the UK.
