Pontiac School
Partnership
Alcott Elementary School
2014-2015
The mission of Pontiac Schools Partnership is to provide
tutoring support, arts enrichment, and material and
nutritional assistance for Alcott Elementary School and to
partner in ministry with other community organizations to
benefit the children of Pontiac.
What is FPC’s Alcott School
Ministry?
Eight years ago we began a partnership with Louisa May Alcott Elementary School in Pontiac to provide literacy tutors in the lower elementary grades. Our partnership has grown in ways we could not have anticipated and continues to evolve as needs change at the school. Last year our involvement at Alcott included the following:
30+ tutors provided literacy support through individualized and small group instruction in all classrooms at Alcott
Provided 20 iPads for Project Lead the Way, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) pilot program
Donated food baskets for families at Thanksgiving and Easter time
Camp Skyline provided 8 scholarships for Alcott students to attend summer camp
Provided small gifts of appreciation to the Alcott teachers at least twice during the school year
Hosted a holiday coffee for the teachers
Donated mittens, hats, and scarves at Christmas
Began a Shop & Drop ministry which provides food for families on weekends. Volunteers shopped for food and dropped it off at the school where it was distributed to students to take home.
Provided funds for field trips and school supplies
Partnered with Flagstar Bank to provide 500 backpacks with school supplies to every Alcott student this fall and distributed them at a Pontiac Back to School Rally
First Foundation provided funding for drums for a new after school program
Here’s How You Can Help!
Literacy Tutors are needed to work
with children one-on-one or in small
groups. (Men are particularly
needed.) No experience
necessary; an introduction to the
program and training are provided.
