a. Moderate- controls alcohol - their health is not harmed.

b. Binge- drinks 3 or more drinks in a short period of time

c. Problem- suffers social or emotion problems because of alcohol. Causes problems at home or work – break the law

d. Alcoholic- Full Blown Disease.

The effect of Alcohol on the Brain

• 1-2 Drinks (BAC .01-.05) Person’s systems begin to slow down, relaxed feelings, slight decrease in fine motor skills.

• 3-4 Drinks (BAC .05-.10) Starts to effect judgment and reaction time. People may feel more talkative but in reality their systems are slowed.

• 5-7 Drinks (BAC .10-.18) Affects senses, balance, and coordination.

• 8-12 (BAC .20-.33) Reflexes are decreased, body temperature drops, breathing slows down. Unconsciousness may occur. Further drinking may result in coma or eventually death from an overdose.

Illinois Law for BAC

• .08 is the law – anything above that will result in a DUI

• If you are under 21 years old and caught drinking and driving – the law is called: Zero Tolerance – no matter what your BAC is you will be given a DUI.

Alcohol MythsMyth - Alcohol give you energy?

Fact- Alcohol is alcohol. Your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) determines how drunk you are.

Myth – Switching between beer and liquor will get you drunk faster?

Fact- It is a depressant that slows everything down. Your ability to think, speak, move, react, etc…

Myth- Everybody reacts the same to alcohol?

Fact- Nope! It depends you. How old your are, how much you weigh, your mood, if you are on other drugs, etc….

Myth- A cold shower or cup of coffee will sober you up.

Fact-Time is the only thing that can sober you up. It takes one hour per drink for your liver to get it out of your system

Myth- It’s just beer, it can’t permanently damage you!

Fact-Large amounts of alcohol can do major damage to your body. You can hurt your liver, heart, stomach, brain, etc… from too much alcohol. You can get poisoned and die.

Myth- It is none of my business it a friend is drinking too much.

Fact- If you are a real friend, you will make it your business. Be honest with them and they might listen to you. You might even talk them into getting help.

Myth- The worst thing that could happen is a hangover?

Fact -If you drink enough alcohol, fast enough, you could get an amount in your body that can kill you in only a few hours.

Myth- Drugs are a bigger problem than alcohol.

Fact- Alcohol kills more people each year than any other drug.Ten million Americans are addicted to alcohol. It is the #1 drug problem among youths.

Myth- Alcohol makes you SEXY!

Fact- The more you drink, the less you think. People make bad decisions when drinking which can lead to pregnancy, STD’s, and accidents. There is nothing sexy about that.

Myth- People who drink too much only hurt themselves!

Fact- They can hurt everyone around them – their friends, their families, and even people they don’t mean to hurt.

• 839 Sober people were killed in alcohol related crashes

• More than 50,000 DUI were recorded

• 95% of drivers arrested for a DUI lost their driving privileges

• 2,863 drivers under 21 lost their driving privileges because of Zero Tolerance

• 85% of all DIU arrests are first offenders
