It s a small number who areruining it Since when is 785,000 a small number?Thats how many uninhibited bingedrinkers there are in New Zealand. Afurther 622,000 people are constrainedbinge drinkers. Together thats 1.3 millionpeople, about a third of all drinkers in NewZealand who are not drinking responsibly.

Alcohol is not tobacco. Both are big killers: tobacco kills 5000people a year, alcohol contributes toanother 1000 deaths. Like tobacco, alcoholis an addictive drug that causes harm in ourcommunities. Unlike tobacco it causespeople to become violent and. So, sure, theyre not the same, but that doesnt meanwe should disregard the harm caused byalcohol.

Responsible drinkers? About a third of New Zealanders have at

least one heavy drinker in their lives, and aquarter of New Zealanders live in the samehouse as a heavy drinker. It is estimatedthat for every person with an alcoholproblem an average of three others are alsoaffected. So the ripple effects are huge.

    The status quo is fine.

The status quo means 1000 deaths due toalcohol every year. It means 785,000 bingedrinkers. It means $72,000,000 in costs forPolice, Corrections and health expenditure. It means $4.8 billion in costs to thetaxpayer. The status quo means moreharm.
