Blood alcohol content, or BAC, (also calledBlood alcohol content, blood alcohol

concentration, blood ethanol concentration,Blood Alcohol Level(BAL)) is most commonlyused as a metric of intoxication for legal or medical purposes. It is usually expressed as a

fractional percentage in terms of volume of alcohol per liter of blood in the body. That iscommonly expressed without units, or as a decimal with 2-3 significant digits followed by a

percentage sign, which means 1/100 of the previous number (e.g., 0.0008 expressed as a

percentage = 0.08%). Each country or state may define BAC differently. For example, the U.S.state of California defines their BAC as a ratio of grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood

which is equal to grams of alcohol per deciliter of blood.

Since measurement must be accurate and inexpensive, several measurement techniques are used

as proxies to approximate the true parts per million measure. Some of the most common arelisted here: (1) Mass of alcohol per volume of exhaled breath (e.g. 0.38 mg/L; see also breath gas

analysis), (2) Mass per volume of blood in the body (e.g.: 0.08 g/dL), and (3) Mass of alcohol

per mass of the body (e.g.: 0.0013 g/Kg).

The number of drinks consumed is often a poor measure of blood alcohol content, largely

because of variations in weight, sex and body fat.

An ethanol level of 0.10% is equal to 22 mmol/l or 100 mg/dl of blood alcohol. This same 0.10%

BAC also equates to 0.10 g/dL of blood alcohol or 0.10 g/210L of exhaled breath alcohol or

0.476 mg/L of exhaled breath alcohol. Likewise, 0.10 mg/L of exhaled breath alcohol converts to0.02% BAC, 0.022 g/dL of blood alcohol or 0.022 g/210L of exhaled breath alcohol.

In our project we are using a common alcohol sensor to check the alcohol content of a personwhich consumes alcohol. Our project is an approach to utilize this project in all common places

like malls restaurants and others were security threats are compulsory. Presently only authorized

officer in police departments are having this equipment and in beyond the reach of commonpeople.

In our project Microcontroller is used to read alcohol sensor reading

through its analog adc channel presented on its pins. After this readingis converted into alcohol values based on sensor datasheet given below .

A liquid crystal display is used to display information to the user about

    the alcohol content.

Alcohol Gas Sensor Analog OutThis alcohol sensor is suitable for detecting alcoholconcentration on your breath, just like your commonbreathalyzer. It has a high sensitivity and fast response

time. Sensor provides an analog output based on alcoholconcentration.

Warm up TimeThe sensor needs 10 minutes of warm up time after first power is applied. After 10minutes you cantake its readings. During warm up time the output analog voltage would go up from 4.5Vto 0.5V invariation down gradually. During this warm up time the sensor reading should beignored.

Using the SensorThe sensor needs 5V to operate, Give regulated +5V DC supply, The sensor will take

around180mA supply. The sensor will heat a little bit since it has internal heater that heats thesensingelement.

Testing the sensorMeasure the output voltage through multi-meter between A.OUT and Ground pins orUse amicrocontroller to measure the voltage output. Best way to check the sensor is take abottle of aftershave liquid and open the cap. Take the sensor near the bottle output. You will seeincrease in thereadings.

Deriving Gas concentration from Output VoltageHere is a the equation which convert analog output to mg/L gas concentrationMg/L = Analog Voltage in mV x 0.002Example: Gas sensor voltage is giving output as2500mV(2.5V) So the gas concentration in mg/L = 2500x0.002 = 5 mg/L

Here is the table for your reference
