Why are Bare Root Amsonia better?

Walters Gardens, Inc. is one of few, if not the only, wholesale growers in the US who offers Amsonia in bare root form. Though we’ve tried growing it in plugs in the past, we’ve been astounded by the difference in quality since switching to bare root production.

The number of eyes on a #1 grade bare root Amsonia ranges from 5-8 compared to just 1 or 2 in plug form. They finish beauti-fully in a 2-qt or 1-gal container, forming a full and bushy plant. Now that’s value!

Our #1 Grade bare root Amsonia averages 5-8 eyes each.

Finished plants from bare root have 5-8 strong stems each and lush foliage that fills out the pot nicely.

CULTURESimplicifolia Group–Character-ized by glossy, mid-green, lobed leaves which form a compact mound. Open, airy flower panicles are followed by ornamental seed heads which provide additional seasonal interest. Slower to es-tablish than the Arendsii Group, requiring about 3 years to reach maturity.

Arendsii Group–Developed by famed German nurseryman George Arends, this group in-cludes crosses of A. chinensis var. davidii with A. astilboides, and members of the Japonica and Thunbergii Groups. The resulting hybrids comprise over 95% of all Astilbe sold in the US.

Astilbe chinensis–A later bloom-ing and moderately drought toler-ant species. Forms a robust, deeply divided, coarsely textured clump of foliage. Flowers are borne on narrow, branched panicles.

Japonica Group–Noted for its early bloom time and glossy green leaves which are often tinged with red. Flowers are produced in dense, pyramidal clusters.

TAKE AWAY TIPAll of the Astilbes we offer are from our own field grown stock here in Michigan. These plants are not bought in from Europe so they have not gone through the mandatory hot water dip which can affect flowering performance. Our Astilbes deliver a superior performance in containers and the landscape.

Like many Dutchmen, Jan Verschoor got his start in the nursery business through his family’s flower bulb business. His interest in perennials began while work-ing a summer job at a reputable perennial nursery. After his father retired, Jan introduced perennial pro-

duction into the family business, focusing first on cut flowers and then on breed-

ing. His first experience in breeding was with Tall Garden Phlox (see some of Jan’s Phlox introductions beginning on p. 172), but through the years he has also done extensive

work with Iris, Solidago, and Astilbe.

Astilbe YOUNIQUE™ Series This series from Jan Verschoor offers a higher flower scape count and compact foliage that results in fabu-lous finished plants. Faster finishing plants produce bunches of fragrant, triangular plumes. Individual colors are offered below. Arendsii group.16-20in/ESu-MSu/Z4-9/2 eye DAsexual propagation prohibited.

Meet Hans Hansen, one of our resident plant experts and head of the WGI hybridizing team. Hans was a born gardener, working first in his family’s garden at the age of three and then moving on to breeding Asiatic lilies when he was just a teenager. Though he enjoys hybridizing many genera including Baptisia and Paeonia, he is most known for his numerous hosta introductions including ‘Journey’s End’ (p. 136), which he considers to be one of his best. Hans is especially excited to offer you his series of DECADENCE™ Baptisias, which are the result of over a decade of his breeding work.

Why are Bare Root

Baptisia better?

Since Baptisia cannot be imported from overseas, it’s important to find a reliable American supplier. Few, if any, wholesale grow-ers in the US other than Walters Gardens, Inc. offer bare root Baptisia.

This native peren-nial thrives in the sandy loam soil of West Michigan. A typical #1 grade Baptisia has 3-5 eyes and 2-3 stems compared to just 1 in plug form. These bare root liners result in much larger finished plants in containers than their smaller plug-grown counter-parts, offering a much greater value for the end consumer.

Photo courtesy of Chicagoland Grows® Photo courtesy of Chicagoland Grows®

Our #1 grade bare root Baptisia averages 3-5

eyes each.

Finished plants from bare root have 2-3

strong stems each and lush foliage that fills out

the pot nicely.

Baptisia PRAIRIEBLUES™

ADDED VALUE: In our trials, mem-bers of the PRAIRIEBLUES™ Series bloomed the first year from bare root without providing supplemental lighting.

Walters Gardens is proud to welcome the newest member of our hybridizing team, Kelly Oates. Kelly comes to us from North Carolina State University where she recently completed her Masters degree studying the genetic im-provement of Rudbeckia, the Black-Eyed Susan.

Kelly’s career in Horticulture began while working at Monrovia nursery in Oregon and Ohio. There she gained an appreciation for what it takes to grow quality perennials efficiently. She also recognized the importance of bringing quality new varieties to the consumer and grower.

Kelly’s practical experience in the nursery business, along with her education in plant breeding, gives her an interest-ing perspective on both the market demands for new and distinct perennials as well as the science involved in creat-ing them.

Kelly loves bold flowering plants and enjoys hybridizing Rudbeckia, Monarda, Dicentra, Helleborus, and just about anything else she stumbles upon blooming. Look for ter-rific new introductions to come from Kelly in the future!
