The Alcatel-Lucent Fiber-to-the-NodeSolution for Deep-Fiber Access

Power and Flexibility for Your Unique NeedsAlcatel-Lucent has been the worldleader in DSL deployments since the early development of the tech -nol ogy. To date, Alcatel-Lucent hasshipped more than 143 million DSLlines worldwide.

Market requirements for bandwidthto the subscriber have increasedtremendously since the initialdeployments of DSL services. Eachchange in market demand has beenanticipated and met with a newtechnological breakthrough fromAlcatel-Lucent. The Alcatel-Lucent

7330 ISAM FTTN is part of Alcatel-Lucent’s continued worldwide lead -ership in broadband innovation.

To meet the challenge of bringingmore bandwidth closer to the sub -scriber, many of you are alreadydeploying the next wave of DSLdeploy ments by increasing fiberpene tration in your access networks. This new deep-fiber access deliversnon-blocking, ultra-high bandwidthto each subscriber, enabling the deliv -ery of rich communication andenter t ainment services. Indeed, asan evolutionary step toward a fullfiber network, FTTN provides themost competitive service.

So, if you are a telecom serviceprovider, you will need to offer bun -dled services that typically include IPtelevision (IPTV), as well as otherinteractive services - in addition tohigh-speed Internet (HSI) and voice. The combination of IP services need -ed to meet this strategic requirementcan increase the required bandwidthto the subscriber from 2 or 3 Mb/s to20 Mb/s, or more. With Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2, 20 Mb/s can bedelivered simultaneously to each port. Moreover, greater bandwidths on indi -vidual ports can also be delivereddepending on total system load andloop lengths. Just as important, theability to bond allows more bandwidthfor customers deeper into the network.

Your challenge, put simply, is to pro -vide additional subscriber bandwidth –cost-effectively and efficiently.

Taking the Battle to a New Level

Halting the Siege

If you are a traditional ILEC serviceprovider, you are likely under siege.Cable operators have attacked youin the broadband and voice market.By offering voice services, they havebegun to capture voice customers atan accelerating rate. Competitivelocal exchange carriers (CLECs) arecontinuing to be a major factor, too.So, in order to compete, you need totake the battle to a new level andintroduce new technologies.

Broadband technology, and the manyIP services that it enables, are creatinga new battleground. Those companiesthat deploy high-bandwidth connec -tivity to the customer and effectivelydevelop and market IP services willwin the war.

IP services in the home are the key to winning the battle against your competition.

The good news is that FTTN economically increases theavailable bandwidth to the subscriber while leveraging theexisting copper plant to keep costs down.

Technological HurdlesThe existing DSL network was engineered to provideHSI access with down stream bandwidth between 0.5 and 2 Mb/s. Competition and increasing usage of thebroadband connection have driven HSI bandwidthrequirements into the 3 to 8 Mb/s range. However, thedeployment of IPTV service calls for a deep-fiber solutionin the access network. Bandwidth requirements for acompetitive triple play service require 20 Mb/s or more.

FTTN Leverages the Existing Copper Infrastructure

For many customers, the long-term solution is to deploy fiber-to-the-user(FTTU). This will enable the delivery of virtually unlimited subscriberbandwidth. While this solution is available today and practical in many cases, time-to-market and short-term economic pressures are driving a moreincremental access strategy — FTTN. As illustrated in Figure, 1, by leveragingthe existing copper infrastruc ture and by deploying fiber deep in the outsideplant, FTTN reduces copper loop lengths, cuts trench costs, and increasesbandwidth with DSL.

As a member of the ISAM family, the Alcatel-Lucent 7330 ISAM FTTNdelivers a full suite of triple-play services to all customers regardless of thepopulation density and central office (CO) reach. Designed to be flexible andstandards-based, the Alcatel-Lucent 7330 ISAM FTTN assures simplified oper -ations, mini mized operating expenditures (OPEX), less training requirements, and faster time-to-market for new services.

required on the aggregation switch. The result is a cost-efficient andgradual evolu tion toward deep-fiberpenetration.

As a service provider, migrating yourvoice services to new VoIP (Voiceover Internet Protocol)/IMS (InternetProtocol Multimedia Subsystem)-based network architectures becomesa vital part of your network transfor -mation. Voice transformation to VoIPhas already started in the home withATAs (analog terminal adapters).FTTN allows you to broaden that net-work path by offering integrated ATAdevices in the DSL modems. Theseare commonly called ResidentialGateways (RGs). With this transfor -mation in mind, Alcatel-Lucent alsooffers a POTS line termination cardfor those customers that may be lefton your traditional voice network buthave not chosen to upgrade to newerDSL-based services. The POLT cardallows you to convert those remainingcustomers to an IMS-based network.

An additional advantage of thisdistrib uted access platform is that itoptimizes your network man agementbecause the distributed system isviewed as one node.

Indeed, FTTN networks have severalkey advantages, including:

• Triple play service capabilities

• Small footprint and minimalpower requirements

• An incremental step towardFTTU enabled by an investmentin deep fiber

• Seamless integration into existingoperations processes, reducingtraining costs

• Accelerated deployment, reducingcosts and time-to-market whileincreasing revenues

• Allowing the migration of voiceservices to new IMS-basedarchitectures

The Alcatel-Lucent 7330 ISAMFTTN is capable of various forms ofexpansion that utilize the switchingfabric and network uplinks of the hostshelf. As a result, you can extend thehost shelf in a distributed way, opti -mizing the network infrastructure andreducing the number of fiber connec -tions to the CO. This optimization ofthe fiber connectivity is what providesthe self-aggregation concept thatallows reuse of the host shelf resources. This expansion capability providesincreased coverage and better utiliza -tion of the bandwidth. Fewer fiberconnections means fewer ports

Alcatel-Lucent 7330 ISAM FTTN — World-Class Technologyfor World-Class Solutions

The Alcatel-Lucent 7330 ISAM FTTN builds on Alcatel-Lucent’s world wide DSL expertise by inte grat ing the besttechnology available from the Alcatel-Lucent 7302 ISAMinto a more compact remote digital sub scriber line accessmultiplexer (DSLAM), which is tailored for the uniquerequirements of FTTN networks.

Figure 2 illustrates an Alcatel-Lucent 7330 ISAM FTTNnetwork layout, depicting a standard service providercoverage area. In the CO, the Alcatel-Lucent 7330 ISAMFTTN host shelf is being used to serve lines that are withinthe CO’s serving area distance. At one remote site, a remotehost is connected to an Alcatel-Lucent 7330 ISAM FTTNexpan sion shelf (ES) while at another remote site, a sealedexpansion module (SEM) is being used. This extends yourserving area in a cost-efficient way, allowing modulargrowth and the quick deployment of new services. Moreover, the host shelf can be extended with an Alcatel-Lucent7330 ISAM FTTN ES or SEM.

FTTN Expansion for Addition of Subscriber Interfaces The Alcatel-Lucent 7330 ISAM FTTN supports expansion modules that havebeen designed for the addi tion of subscriber interfaces without the need foradditional switching capac ity. As such, the Alcatel-Lucent 7330 ISAM FTTNhost serves as your central hub for expansion modules, expansion shelves andsealed enclo sure modules (SEMs) and extends GigE interfaces to these high-density subscriber interfaces. These modules can be either collocated with thehost or remotely deployed and connected with an optical interface.
