We’ve been working hard at the ALC this year to improve our communications, update our web site, and enhance our identity so that it aligns with the way we work on behalf of our learners.

Our new tag line Learn – Grow – Thrive embodies our mission to serve learners of all ages – from infants to seniors. The circle in the logo symbolizes continuing, lifelong education and open-ended growth. And the star signifies the success that so many of our learners strive for and achieve.

Yet Learn – Grow – Thrive is not just a tag line that applies only to our students. It’s what we believe for ourselves as well. We think it’s important – for all of us here at the ALC - to always be learning, innovating, and acquiring new knowledge and skills.

Here are just a few examples:

• Our Early Childhood Adventures Program (ECAP) now offers parents an app called HiMama that parents

can download onto their phones. They can see what their children are doing in childcare, what they eat and how long they nap. Parents can share the daily activities their children are participating in and learn how each is connected to the NH Early Learning Standards for early childhood education.

• All of our ECAP staff and School Age Care staff attain a required number of development hours each year by taking classes in CPR, First Aid, child development and psychology, and more. We believe in investing in our talented and dedicated staff with ongoing training and continuing education.

• This commitment is building-wide. Our Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) regularly offers workshops on a variety of topics designed to help employees excel at their jobs and grow professionally.

• The professional staff in our Finance and HR Departments - as well as our Teachers - all take training annually to maintain credentials and licensing. And we like to share this knowledge: recently, for example, our Finance Director presented a workshop on household budgeting for our parents.

• As always, safety and security are our top priority. This past year our staff took part in active shooter training and fire extinguisher training.

Everyone here is always looking for ways to improve, innovate, and provide better services to our clients. We know that in order to be effective and worthy of your support, we must be energetic, bold, and enterprising. It’s a challenge we welcome and embrace enthusiastically!

At the Adult Learning Center, we share a common goal of independence, self-sufficiency and self-worth with our clients. By becoming employed and independent of social services, our clients discover their own dignity and make their own special contributions to a healthy, prosperous community. Most of all, this was a year of accomplishing some very important long-time goals!

The following success stories for July 2017 through June 2018 clearly demonstrate the many ways the ALC helps people learn the skills they need for life:

• 122 adults completed their high school education by passing the HiSET.

• 267 adults improved their basic skills in reading, math, social studies, science and literature.

• 1,092 immigrants from 78 countries were able to do their jobs better by improving their English language skills.

• 85 teenagers continued their education at Clearway Alternative High School; 23 earned a high school diploma or HiSET.

• 168 workers became employed or upgraded their employment through Computer Technology skills training.

• 65 children received a jump start on their education through our Early Childhood Adventures program, a “community of quality and joy.”

• 884 school age children’s parents were given peace of mind at work knowing their children were happy and safe in Adventure Club programs.

Featured Program: Clearway High School

Clearway High School was established in 1977 as an alternative high school program for teenagers who need a specialized setting to successfully earn a high school diploma or equivalency diploma (HiSET, formerly GED).

Last May, Clearway High School held its graduation ceremony, with the largest class in recent history – 23

students -- receiving diplomas. According to Marianne Wiley, Clearway Director, these graduates “have shifted their priorities, stayed true to their goals, and worked hard to earn their place here tonight. We are proud of them all, and they certainly should be very proud of themselves.” Marianne thanked Clearway’s “dedicated, creative and hardworking staff, who are licensed and qualified to teach in more traditional settings, but who choose to work here with students who have faced some real challenges, because their successes are so rewarding.”

The student speaker, Kiera, embodied this personal transformation. With her grandmother watching proudly from the audience, Kiera spoke about how Clearway “listened to my story, and allowed me to make a better one. It was not easy, and I did want to give up. But standing here today, I am so glad that I didn’t. Now I believe that every day is a second chance, and that tomorrow when you wake up, you can make it better than yesterday. Congratulations to my fellow classmates – we all came to Clearway for our own individual reasons and together we’ve accomplished something big. So be proud - because we did it!”

The keynote speaker was Dotty Oden, representing the Nashua School District, who spoke about the impact students had in advocating for Clearway funding at public school board meetings. Oden recalled the profound effect their testimony had on her: “It was so obvious that Clearway is so important to so many students. I heard personal stories about how special and unique this place is, and how

teachers and staff here help students meet the challenges they face, both academic and personal. The students were so passionate and articulate, and their words so powerful, that when they spoke, you could hear a pin drop in the room.”

Clearway Director Wiley ended with this message: “Please use your Clearway experience to remember that there is always a Plan B – there is always an alternative path, and the goals that matter most in life are rarely easily attainable. You have to work for them. So celebrate yourselves and always choose to see the very best in everyone. “
