A message from the Principal
Yesterday morning I waved goodbye to the Year 6 teachers and students heading off on their 3
day 2 night major excursion to the Nation’s capital. While in Canberra, the students will be visiting
many sites and participating in activities designed to increase their understanding of how
Australia is governed and our national history. The campers were all very excited and looking
forward to their experience.
Last week 4 of our senior boys competed in the State
Basketball carnival in Maitland. The following was
received from the coach/convenor:
Dear Principal / Sports Coordinator
This is an email to let you know just how impressed I
was with the Albury Public boys at the State
basketball carnival in Maitland.
Ryan Kemp, Jake Bauerle, Lenny Koller and Oliver
Mack played great basketball and displayed
excellent sportsmanship all week. Please pass on my
congratulations to these boys.
The Riverina boys won three of their seven games to
finish ninth, out of the fourteen teams at the NSW
State basketball carnival. We almost got a fourth
win against Sydney East (would have been a big
upset!)

On Tuesday this week the teaching staff was involved in professional learning to build
understanding and capacity of Cognitive Load and how it impacts on a student’s ability to
understand and complete tasks in the classroom. We discussed the importance of recognising
that, contrary to popular belief, the brain is not designed for thinking as thinking is slow and
unreliable (unless the person is guaranteed success). People are naturally curious but they are
not naturally good thinkers; unless the cognitive conditions are right, people will avoid thinking. To
counteract this, we build schemas. Good classroom teaching (and life experiences) are about
creating opportunities to learn new things through curiosity and adding these new experiences
to what we already know, our established schemas or prior knowledge.
Our second session was closely linked and focused on the importance of formative assessment
and explicit teaching. There is a lot of evidence of successful strategies already being used in the
classrooms at Albury PS but we want to refresh and remind all teachers about the importance
and benefits of these strategies as they lead to success for all students.
Our final session was linked to our implementation of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL).
Teachers continued the work around defining the expected behaviours in all settings. These
behaviours will be explicitly taught, demonstrated and modelled so that we can be confident
that our students are aware of the expected behaviours.
This week our Year 3 and Year 5 students sat the NAPLAN tests in Reading, Language
Conventions, Writing and Numeracy. As our students completed the paper tests, we did not
experience the issues that were reported in relation to the online tests. Reports will be forwarded
for all students who participated in August/ September. This information should be considered
along with other student assessments. If you have any questions in relation to NAPLAN or your
child’s progress, please contact the class teacher.
This Saturday is the federal election. Albury Public School will be a polling station. The P&C is
cooking up a barbeque as a fundraiser for the school, following on from the very successful state
election barbeque in March. Please consider supporting the barbeque on Saturday when you
come to vote. Thanks also to the amazing volunteers who are cooking and serving on the day.
Your contribution is invaluable.
The parent information session, Supporting Literacy and Numeracy at home – a guide for
parents/carers, will be repeated in a twilight session on Tuesday 28 May in the staffroom. This
session will start at 6:00pm and conclude at approximately 7:00pm, prior to the May P&C
meeting. If you are interested in attending, please contact the front office, or email the school,
to express your interest. The session is predominantly for parents of students in K – 2 but will
provide valuable information for all parents on promoting literacy and numeracy at home.
The Zone Athletics Carnival was held on Friday 10 May at the Les O’Brien Precinct. We were
represented by 58 students who braved the cold, rain and hail to compete in their
events. Congratulations to these students for excellent efforts on the day. Unfortunately, due to
the weather on the day, not all events were completed. Information regarding catch up of
events will be provided to students when we receive it.
Have a great week.

The 2019 Australian Children’s Music foundation
National Song writing Competition is now OPEN!
Every year, students from schools across Australia are invited to put pen to paper and enter their
original song. Winners receive prize-money which can be allocated towards musical equipment
or tuition.
For 2019 the competition has had some changes—there are fewer categories in which to enter,
which means that the prizes are more substantial. Plus, prizes are not limited to individuals!
This year, Schools have an opportunity to win the newly-introduces “Song writing School of the
Year” Award.
We have introduced the ability to enter a song as a school group, which has its own category,
and a prize of $5,000 to the winning school.
It’s easy to enter—students simply upload a recording and lyrics to their song using the online en-
try form on our website.
There are over $22,000 in prizes to be won—and can go towards music equipment and tuition.
Entry into the completion is FREE!

PSSA Basketball
NSW PSSA Basketball last week in Maitland . Jake , Lenny , Ryan and Ollie all played
exceptionally well and represented their school and Riverina with pride . A highlight was winning
their playoff final against a strong Sydney South West team to finish 9th in the state. Lenny also
received the Riverina medal for good sportsmanship.
Zone Cross Country
On Friday 24 May around 60 of our students will attend the Zone Cross Carnival being run at the
Albury Equestrian Centre. Mr Clift and Mr Fyffe will be supervising the students . We need a
parent helper from our school to assist on the day, if you could help please contact the front
office . All students have received permission notes which should be returned, with payment, to
the “Boomerang Blue Box” ASAP .
Mr Clift, Cross Country Coordinator.
NATIONAL WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY
Tomorrow 17 May the staff of Albury Public School encourage all our
families to walk all or part of the way to school. The national theme for 2019
is that all children under the age of 10 years should hold an adult’s hand as
they cross the road. While you are walking remember to cross roads safely.
Use the pedestrian crossings so that all our students understand the
importance of these in our local community.
We want all our students to arrive safely to school every day so let’s practise this Friday.
Enjoy your walk! Jenny Boehm, Coordinator.

Hello Everyone,
A big thank you to Antoinette Roberts for catering the Curiosity & Powerful Learning school
improvement program breakfast this morning . We couldn’t have done it without you !
Our roster is looking a bit sad this week, so if you can spare an hour to make some sandwiches
between 10am and 11am that would be much appreciated.
We desperately need one person to pick up the Sushi for us on Wednesday around 10am from
Go Sushi in the Myer Centre. Due to early lunchtime it is nearly impossible to do this if we are on
own.
We have some great hand knitted school beanies for sale from the canteen. They are woolly
and warm………….$15.00 cash only
Wishing you all a great week!!

Election Day barbecue and Cake Stall
Can you bake a cake or sizzle a snag to help your school?
We’re seeking volunteers and donations of baked goods for a cake stall and barbecue at our
school during voting in the Federal Election.
Date: Saturday 18 May, from 8am-6pm.
Cakes must have the ingredients listed. Cakes can be donated to the stall throughout the day
on Saturday from 7.30am or to the canteen on Friday.
If you can volunteer for a two-hour shift on the barbecue, please contact KAM mum Amber
McSwiney at [email protected] or 0423 042498.
The barbecue and cake stall will start at 8am and finish at 5pm - or when we run out of food!
Money raised will be used to buy science equipment for the school.
Please come and support on the day and help if you can!
Thank You! To all the helpers and to those who donated items to be sold at the Moth-
er’s Day Stall. It was a lovely day with lots of smiling faces as children thought hard
about what their loved ones would like best. We will be losing our Mother’s Day and
Father’s day stall coordinator at the end of the year, as her youngest child is now in
year 6. We wish to extend a huge thank you to Sharon Green for years of hard work
running these stalls . We will be looking for new people to help run these stalls next year,
so please consider this, and if you are interested, come to the next P&C meeting, Tuesday 28 May, 7pm
for a 7:30 start in the staff room or email the P&C at: [email protected]

TABLE TENNIS FOR JUNIORS
Albury Wodonga Table Tennis Association invites all students aged 10yrs to
16yrs who would like to play table tennis one afternoon a week, 4.30pm till
6.00pm, every Wednesday, at Greenfield Park. No experience necessary.
The cost is only $5 with some coaching, and equipment is available.
AWTTA is an Active Kids program provider, so the two $100 Active Kids
vouchers for NSW residents in 2019 can be used to pay for fees at the club.
This is great option for kids to have the benefits of getting fit and active as well as learning new
skills and developing hand-eye co-ordination, and enjoying social interaction with others
through a shared interest.
If, instead of these Junior Sessions, students choose the night-time Pennant competition, the
cost will be $6.00 per session and the TT Victoria registration is $50.
Club information is available on the website awtta.org.au
