APD Celebrated National Night Out

APD celebrated National Night Out on August 1st which is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-neighborhood partnerships. National Night Out is a proactive police event that brings law enforcement and the community together under positive circumstances. APD participated in several community activities ranging from small neighborhood gatherings to large events with music and games. APD officers took the opportunity to discuss quality of life issues with residents that affect their neighborhoods, as well as encouraging them to become actively involved.

Foothills Area Command Officers Attended Hearing-Impaired Community Forum

On August 23, Sergeant Sanders and Lieutenants Norris and White attended a Coffee With A Cop forum with the New Mexico Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The officers presented ideas on how to improve the partnership between the police department and the hearing-impaired community.

Northwest Area Command Celebrated Officer Appreciation Day

Donations were made by numerous homeowner’s associations and restaurants and stores such as Rudy’s BBQ, Starbucks, Chik-fil-a, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Panera Bread,The Vitamin Shoppe, Chili’s and Home Depot. Everyone who attended showed their support for APD.

A community resident saw a boy riding a bike without tires. On her way to a gas station, she approached Officer Breeden and asked for help. Officer Breeden utilized social media asking for an extra bicycle and clothes for the young boy. He found two bicycles and purchased new tires using his own money.

Officer Breeden stated that “hopefully he will always remember that and later on he’ll turn around and do the same thing when he’s older. He’ll be able to make a difference in someone’s life,”

Three strangers now share a bond.

Valley Area Command Celebrated Officer Appreciation Day On August 11, the Valley Area Command held its annual Officer Appreciation Day celebration. Donations from several businesses provided food for the officers and civilian staff. Several command staff and community members were also in attendance. The mother of Officer Gerald E. Cline, for whom the sub-station is named, was presented a hand-crafted memorial of her son who fell in the line of duty while protecting the citizens of Albuquerque in 1983.

On August 29, officers participated in Coffee with a Cop, which was hosted by Starbucks on Lomas Boulevard. The event was considered a great success as every table in the establishment was taken. APD officers had engaging conversations with the community.

Officer From the Northeast Area Command Recognized By the Albuquerque Fire Department (AFD)

Officer B. Lund responded with AFD Station 9 personnel to a call where a gentleman had wrecked on his scooter. The patient did not want to go to the emergency room because he could not afford the bill. Officer Lund convinced the man to go to the nearest Urgent Care and also volunteered to take him. AFD praised Officer Lund for his act of kindness.

Southeast Area Command Officers Attended a Homeowners Association Coalition Meeting

On August 9, Officer R. Enriquez and Sergeant R. Legendre attended the District Six Coalition Meeting. Sergeant Legendre discussed APD’s Police and Community Together (PACT) initiatives and answered questions the group had regarding the Department.

Southwest Area Command Participated in Route 66 Westfest

On August 26, the Southwest Area Command participated in the Route 66 Westfest. The community gathered and enjoyed a day of music, food and fun. APD’s Horse Mounted Unit also participated in the festivities.

Uniformed Officer of the Month Officer Jeffrey Bludworth

Team of the Month Firearms Range Unit

Civilian of the Month PSA Leeann Pacheco

Officer Jeffrey Bludworth has been with APD since April 2012 and is currently assigned to Team 7 in the Southeast Area Command. Officer Bludworth is bike certified, Enhanced Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) certified and is the first to take priority one calls. He consistently is the highest producer each month. Each week he initiates and conducts his own tactical plans addressing various concerns in his sector. Congratulations Officer Bludworth and thank you for your service!

The Firearms Range Unit includes Officer Catherine Garduno, Ken Treece, Damon Fay, Jack Jones, Mike Sandoval and is led by Range Master David Bartram. The unit provides APD cadets and officers with safe, high-quality firearms training. The unit also assists zoo personnel with firearms training and helped develop safety protocols for emergency situations. Congratulations team and thank you for your hard work!

PSA Leeann Pacheco began her career with APD in February 2015 and is currently assigned to Operations Review. On average, PSA Pacheco writes 35 reports and takes 90 calls for service per month. She usually takes primary on all accidents which alleviates field officers’ availability for calls for service. She frequently responds to burglary and recovered stolen vehicle calls which entails processing the scene for latent prints. PSA Pacheco is highly sought after to train incoming PSAs due to her competence and positive work ethic. Congratulations PSA Pacheco and thank you for your service!

Non-Uniformed Officer of the Month Detective Juliana Serna

Detective Juliana Serna has been with APD since June 2002 and is currently assigned to the Major Crime Scene Team as a Criminalistics Detective. Detective Serna has been the Lead Forensic Instructor for the Citizen’s Police Academies, Police Service Aide (PSA), Cadet and field investigator classes Detective Serna is a mentor, trainer, investigator and leader. Her outstanding efforts with training have benefited the department. Congratulations Detective Serna and thank you for your service!

Investigative BureauCriminal Investigation Division (CID)• A vehicle equipped with a Global Positioning

System (GPS) was tracked by the unit. Surveillance on this vehicle resulted in the recovery of three stolen vehicles and seven arrests.

Scientific Evidence Division (SED)• SED conducted 1,272 calls for service.• SED responded to 126 primary burglary calls and

completed 965 reports.

Special Investigations Division (SID)• Air 1 participated in the Annual Homeland

Security conference at Hotel Albuquerque. This event allowed attendees to view equipment from various agencies utilized for public safety.

Real Time Crime Center (RTCC)• The New Mexico State Department joined the

ALeRT stakeholders team and are assisting in the apprehension of repeat offenders.

• On August 19, Crime Stoppers participated in Edgewood’s First Responders Day. The event included food, music and games.

Special Services BureauSpecial Operations Division (SOD)Open Space Section• Officers assisted with the New Mexico Law

Enforcement Memorial Ride.• Open Space officers attended the Homeland

Security conference at Hotel Albuquerque.

SWAT• SWAT attended a demonstration at the Santa Ana

Casino.

Horse Mounted Unit• HMU participated in National Night Out, the

First Impressions Rodeo, Santa Ana Public Safety Day, Taylor Ranch Back to School events and the annual Kutz 4 Kidz program.

K-9 Unit• The K-9 Unit participated in several

demonstrations including High Five - A Hero Day, Public Safety Day with Santa Anna Police Department, Summer Dog Days and a demonstration at a local McDonald’s to promote a fund raiser for local Law Enforcement K-9 units.

Bomb Squad• The Bomb Squad conducted two public relations

demonstrations. The first was a Public Safety Day at Santa Ana Pueblo and the other was for a group at the Jewish Community Center.

Administrative Support BureauRecords Division• The Public Information Unit received 3,454 calls.• The Court Services Unit processed 372

arraignments and submitted 501 felony cases to the District Attorney’s Office.

Planning DivisionRenovations at the Foothills Substation are underway. APD would like to thank Councilor Trudy Jones for her support with this project. Due to the renovations, the Foothills substation will be closed starting Monday, September 25 and will re-open on Monday, October 9, 2017. During this time, the James Dwyer Substation located at 12700 Montgomery Boulevard will be open to the public during regular business hours.
