There are innumerable ex- amples of songwriting teams,
most notably duos, that have over the star-studded course
of pop music's history cre- ated hit upon hit and thus
generated entire industries in their wake; Climie Fisher
believe they belong in this category, yet only time will
tell. - Page 7

Candi breaking slowlyonto radio playlistsAlthough her second single, Under YourSpell, is featured on the Canadian CDsampler being distributed this month at theNew Music Seminar, according to SomersaultRecord's Bruce Bradley, Candi's first single,Dancing Under A Latin Moon, is developinga pattern of acceptance at radio similar toMadonna's hit Into The Groove.
"What is surprising," he confirms, "isthe number of Canadian CHR stations ad-ding the sone from a 12" configuration. Noother record has received as much airplayfrom a 12" except Into The Groove, especial-ly no other Canadian recording act." Sta-tions in the West were apparently among thefirst, following club reaction, and this pastweek CKOC charted the song, now actuallyavailable in 7" format.
Having recently returned from touringItaly, Candi will be playing at the New MusicSeminar, informs co -manager Nancy Mayer,at the Casey Jones' HiNRG showcase this Ju-ly 19. Also, Dancing Under A Latin Moon, has earnered "significant" play stateside aswell, for instance, at both WHQT (NYC) andWPWR (L.A.)
"What is also remarkable about this ac-tion is the fact that the song has started char-ting and getting airplay before clubs in manyareas," concludes Bradley. Following theNew York date, further live shows are ex-pected in the U.S., before appearing at theQuebec Record Pool Award Show in Mon-treal, where the band has been nominated forDance Music Artist of The Year.
Dancing Under A Latin Moon is current-ly distributed by Electric in Canada.

Mini -mart ... or Hasty -mart? The intrigueis growing. Watch for it, and I know of onemajor label that's concerned. (EC: They'llopen anyone if it's C.O.D!!)
Gerry & Joe catch up Bryan Adams GerryLacoursiere and Joe Summers (EC: Joe willbe upset you didn't use initials) were in Ger-many on a business trip, and caught BryanAdams in West Berlin, but they missed thebig show in East Berlin's Ander rad Benn-bahn (EC: You mean they couldn't get in?Don't those Communists know who theseguys are??) where Bryan dazzled 120,000East Germans with his two and a half hourconcert. The hit of the night was Summer Of'69, with the crowd singing along in English.
Are there problems in indieland ? Movingtoo fast and growing too big, too soon, andwho's calling the shots? Disaster could be justaround the corner. (EC: When the cat'saway!)
Hold on pardner !! Did you know thatin the past seven years, from 1981 to 1988,country music on AM radio has increasedfrom 12 percent to 19 percent, and it's up

three percent on FM radio over that sameperiod of time. Now, wouldn't you agree thatcountry is a powerful music form that has yetto be addressed? (EC: Addressed? That'skind of up town isn't it??)
Rock and roll millionaires . . . Whileeveryone talks about all the money the recordcompanies and the rock superstars are mak-ing . . . in Canada . . . the real rock and rollmillionaires are all older guys who . . runrecord retail chains. Funny how these are theforgotten people when it comes to talkingabout the enormous profits that come fromthis business. Funny also, that all of them liketo maintain a low profile! (EC: Should I readsomething into all that?) No my dear, butlet's make a bet who's going to phone mefirst, to complain.
Speaking of retailers! We heard a fewweeks ago that the major U.S. retailer whohad been eyeing the Vancouver market, haschickened out. Could it be that the competi-tion, on the corporate level, is beginning toheat up? Are some of the established heaviesgetting worried? (EC: It's not bothering GW.He's still eating regularly . . . non-stop!!)
Sort of under the table! To the many peo-ple who complain that our industry is heavilysubsidized, I can only say that this is just thetip of the iceberg. Could you ever imaginehow much government funding enters ourbusiness unnoticed and very quietly? Everyonce in awhile one of these big globs ofmoney gets uncovered and you really wonderif all this doesn't have an effect on the freeenterprise spirit of our industry. Why isn't itmandatory to make such funding public. Toooften we fail to realize That what we view assuccess is nothing more than the ability to conthe government into handing over megabucksto A while B struggles to compete and doesn'teven know about the free money. (EC:C'mon government . . smarten up!!)
Joe Edwards succumbsto heart attackThe industry was saddened to learn of thesudden death of "Uncle Joe" Edwards, oneof Warner Bros' first Canadian employees. He died in Scarborough on Friday, June 24,1988, at the age of 74.
Mr. Edwards, came to the Warner Brosfold in 1967 after a long and distinguishedservice with the Montreal -based CompoCompany. He took on the duties of ChiefFinancial Officer for Warner Bros and at thetime of his retirement in 1983 he wasTreasurer of WEA Music Canada.
Mr. Edwards had much to do withWarner Bros becoming the strong company itis today. "Joe is going to be sorely missed,"said WEA Music Canada President StanKulin, "he was a regular visitor to our officesand kept a close communication with all of ushere. Whenever we had any questions aboutroyalties or company policy from the pastyears, he was always available to answer ourquestions. He was a real gentleman."
Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife Vic-toria, and sons David, Craig, Paul andBryan.
Funeral services were held in Brooklin,Ontario on June 28, 1988.
No pun intended ... ?? No sooner had theCharlie Camilleri roast finished when an ir-ritated, but well-fed, member of the audiencegot on the phone to one of his Ottawafriends, to complain about Liz Braun'sremarks regarding a certain past heavy of theindustry. That's one of the problems withsome of the people in the industry, they takelife too seriously. I'm sure if the guy, whowas the butt of a couple of jokes, had been inthe audience, he would have found the wholething harmless ... as a matter of fact, I knowfrom experience, he really does have a senseof humour.(EC: I know at least a dozen whodon't!!)

Climie Fisher hoping history canHaving already tasted success with the hitsingle Always Something There To RemindMe and subsequently all of its sweet rewards,Rob Fisher, previously with Naked Eyes, wasnot about to let a bunch of talented, yet un-proven, musicians take what easily could behis as well. So, one day, out of frustration heand Simon Climie formed a new band, ClimieFisher, and set out to record another hitsingle.
Simple enough; and they don't deny iteither. A song, a computer, a couple of goodlooking guys and a big -name producer allcombine to give the industry what it wants:something to sell; and they have the attitudethat it may as well be Climie Fisher, as oppos-ed to anyone else. Throw in a track recordand a good measure of British arrogance, andthe plan seems to be working.
Of course, being "matey" with Steve.Lillywhite is going to help when you're finallyready to record a debut album, says Climie. But without a track record, adds Fisher, "wewouldn't have been able to convince therecord company that we should have hadStephen Hague, for instance." Lillywhiteclaims fame with all the early U2 and SimpleMinds records, while Hague is synonymouswith the Pet Shop Boys.
"We met at Abbey Road Studios,"Fisher explains. "We were both doing sessionwork for EMI and it was towards the lastband, which was Naked Eyes, that I waslooking around for someone else to work'with and to write with, and he was also look-ing to be an artist himself. It was all goodtiming really."
As they both were working on the sameproject, which apparently wasn't very good,in the ensuing months it was decided todepart the facility as a duo, a songwritingteam. Climie Fisher hoping history can be repeated Having already tasted success with the hit
single Always Something There To Remind Me and subsequently all of its sweet rewards,
Rob Fisher, previously with Naked Eyes, was not about to let a bunch of talented, yet un-
proven, musicians take what easily could be his as well. So, one day, out of frustration he
and Simon Climie formed a new band, Climie Fisher, and set out to record another hit single.
Simple enough; and they don't deny it either. A song, a computer, a couple of good
looking guys and a big -name producer all combine to give the industry what it wants:
something to sell; and they have the attitude that it may as well be Climie Fisher, as oppos-
ed to anyone else. Throw in a track record and a good measure of British arrogance, and the plan seems to be working.
Of course, being "matey" with Steve. Lillywhite is going to help when you're finally
ready to record a debut album, says Climie. But without a track record, adds Fisher, "we
wouldn't have been able to convince the record company that we should have had
Stephen Hague, for instance." Lillywhite claims fame with all the early U2 and Simple Minds records, while Hague is synonymous
with the Pet Shop Boys. "We met at Abbey Road Studios,"
Fisher explains. "We were both doing session work for EMI and it was towards the last band, which was Naked Eyes, that I was
looking around for someone else to work 'with and to write with, and he was also look-
ing to be an artist himself. It was all good timing really."
As they both were working on the same project, which apparently wasn't very good,
in the ensuing months it was decided to depart the facility as a duo, a songwriting team. "A lot of sessions, when you're work-
ing for other people, he quips, "can be quite tedious. You always have to do what they
want and never what you want to do." So.
thus began the tandem, Climie Fisher, in ernest.
"We worked with a lot of people and 'watched their records fail miserably because
of small scales of economies," Climie con- tinues, "And that's what the music industry
is all about: economies and budgets. We were nearly double our budget, when we wanted to record two more songs, and we had no pro-
blem with the record company. "We are good and when you're eood,
and when you have substance," he reasons, "then money really doesn't matter. We
weren't going to compromise on this album and hope that three or four albums down the
road we'll be able to afford a good producer,
FACTOR providing feedback for applications
FACTOR (The Foundation To Assist Cana- dian Talent on Records) has announced a new system whereby they will provide feed-
back to applicants for the Sound Recording programs.
Applicants to the FACTOR Loan, the New Talent Demo Award and the Profes-
sional Publishers and Songwriters Demo Pro- gram will now be provided with a score sheet
indicating the overall "average" rating on criteria for each song assessed by the
evaluators for each category. Separate scores will be provided for the
music, lyrics, vocals, musicianship, originali- ty, production, radio airplay, and sales
potential. It should be pointed out however, that not all the above criteria will be con-
sidered for each program. Scores will be based on 1) Weak; 2)
Needs extensive work; 3) Needs work; 4) Shows potential; and 5) Good.
This new system has now been im- plemented, which includes those applications
received from May 31st forward.

these songs are worth getting the best involv- ed now."
At the time, and knowing what they did, Fisher maintains there wasn't really any
"plan" at all. "It was just 'Let's see how it works.' So we started writing songs." The
first that displayed potential was Precious Moments and this effort made it to inclusion
on the album, something that both Climie and Fisher had no doubt about anyway.
"Naked Eyes was coming to an end at that point," he relates. "We had been quite
successful in North America and Pete (Byrne), because he was married, was actual-
ly living in Los Angeles at the time. So we weren't really writing together much and it
was just fading away. It was never a tight- knit thing like Climie Fisher, so I just felt it was time to move on anyway and to branch out.
"We ended up with a more soul input," he concludes. "Simon's roots are in R&B and
black music. I listened to more English stuff over the years, but we wanted it to be, not sone based
. . . though we wanted to treat
that as a very important aspect. We wanted to write good songs, but we also knew what it
was going to take."
A&M hosted the Great Pig Races at HMV's Toronto of- fices recently and six key A&M artists competed: Toni
Childs (the winner), Brenda Russell, Colin Linden, Black, Think Out Loud, and Big Pig. HMV mascot, Nip-
per, looks on.
Corey Hart: Running Up The Charts . . .

ROBERT PALMER Pop/RockHeavy NovaEMI Manhattan E1 -48057-FIt's hard not to make comparisons toRiptide, but nonetheless, Palmer didn'tseem to venture much further on thiseffort. Though this album will indeedsell in truckloads, musically andbeyond the obvious single choices, itsimply doesn't stretch the Palmer limitor potential as an artist. Perhaps hehas done it all before anyway; it's justnever been noticed. For radio andretail, taking into account his new fan -base, this album is a gem, yet whetherhis fans will appreciate it is anotherstory altogether.
