After the success of La Chambre du Lion, Adrien Parlange delivers another literary and creative picture book, unique in its genre.

The Hunter BoyAdrien Parlange

Hardcover picture book, 260x360mm, 32 pages, one PVC sheet inserted into a pocket, €14.90

Ages 7 & Up

A t bedtime, a child listens to his mother telling the story of the Hunter Boy. He does not believe

in his existence and falls asleep, but in his dream he tracks the Hunter Boy down in the forest and questions all the animals who may know how to

find him… Now the reader is offered the opportunity to experience becoming the sleeping boy by making

appear the images of the dreams on each page. Indeed, with the help of little signs (a cross, a circle, an angle and a loop) dissimulated on the pages, the reader can

easily position the translucent paper over Matisse like abstract shapes to reveal, as if by magic, the figurative narrative elements of the dream such as a character, an object or an idea hidden in the illustration.

The fluid and changing images softly guide the reader into a dream world. Isn’t this

Hunter Boy the wild double of the sleeping child? A boy whose tempting freedom still can’t

make up for the warmth of a mom or the softness of a pillow…

Editor’s note: Adrien Parlange is a young graphic artist and illustrator. He was awarded a Mention in the FICTION category of the BOLOGNA RAGAZZI AWARD 2015 for La Chambre du Lion published by Albin Michel Jeunesse in 2014.

With elegant writing and clever artwork, Adrien Parlange’s minimalist style unexpectedly discloses a poetic and playful world.

An outstanding pop-up for the family, a unique new baby gift and a treasure to cherish long after baby is born.

W ith finesse and virtuosity, Jean-Marc Fiess has created nine poetic and striking pop-up scenes for each of the deep and sometimes indescribable emotions parents-to-be experience during

nine months, from the amazement of the news to the beginning of a new life. Playing with the children’s familiar visual references such as a Bad Wolf, a car-track or a fun-fair, each scene is a subtle metaphore of the joys, fears and questionnings that every expecting mother or father will want to share with their child one day. Through minimal and colourful design, ethereal paper constructions and few delicate words, 9 Months beautifully conjures one’s enduring and precious memory of expecting a baby. This outstanding pop-up is a treasure to cherish and share within the family long after baby is born.

The magic of time in pictures! From day to night, from a cloud of bees to the jar of honey, from

the sheep to the ball of wool, from storm to calm, time allows metamorphosis, evolution, regressions and improvement. In this spectacular yet astute book, objects, events, landscapes and human beings are working in pairs (facing each other or in subsequent double spreads) to reveal two states of a same thing. The absence of text incites the reader to imagine, understand and recount the story of these changes.

The odd ones out is a graphic and stylish take on the classic children’s spotting book.

THE ODD ONES OUTBastien Contraire

Hardcover picture book, 64 pages and one detachable stencil sheet, 235x300mm, €14.90

Ages 5 & Up

T hese peculiar naturalist prints hide an anomaly: an intruder has crept into each series of objects,

plants and characters pretending to be one of them. It is up to the child to spot the odd one out! A lobster easily blends amongst a bunch of beetles; a cat tries to fit in with the dogs; an umbrella surprisingly looks like mushrooms; the horse may be legitimate amongst the two-wheel vehicles… Bastien Contraire plays with the analogy of shapes, proportions and functions. Using stencil patterns and only two colors, green and red, the elements all look unexpectedly alike and it makes the task trickier to spot the inconsistency. The illusion is sometimes amusing, sometimes witty but always bluffing! The interest of the book not only lies in the spotting game but also in the graphic visual experience of the patterned artwork and the humorous effect of the hidden surprise. The book comes with a detachable stencil sheet to initiate children to this technique and give them the opportunity to recreate some of the beautiful stencils.
