DECEMBER 2014 Alberta Deaf Sport Association CHARLOU IS TEAM CANADA! Charlou Delos Santos flew to Yerevan, Armenia to participate in the 1st World Deaf Greco- Roman and Freestyle Wrestling Cadet and Junior Championships held on 3-8 October 2014 at Yerevan, Armenia. He was the only representative from Canada to attend. All the other wrestlers were from Europe or Asia – for example, India, Georgia, Ukraine, Russia – to name a few. There were fourteen different countries in attendance and around 60 wrestlers in all. This incredible experience was made possible by support from Alberta Deaf Sports Association, Canadian Deaf Sports Association and the Edmonton Wrestling Club. His coach was the assistant coach of the University of Alberta Bears, Michael Asseltine. Although Charlou didn’t bring home any medals, he has had the experience of a lifetime. Along with his many fantastic memories, he has a new goal – Summer Deaflympics 2017! 1 st World Deaf Wrestling Cadet and Junior Championship Canada

Sadly, summer is now over! Fall has arrived and plenty of beautiful leaves that turned into beautiful colours. However, the leaves have fallen down and the snow has arrived with mist air. The climate has dropped rapidly fast with snow. It is time to get your winter tires on. It is also time to put more clothes on when going out. No more sandals, shorts and tank top to go outside to play any outdoor sports.

The ADSA Board would like to give a warm welcome to our new ADSA Secretary, Amorena who started with us on September 26th, 2014.

Terri Watts’s Story

I, President would pleased announcements Men Team came 2nd place of Dart Game and also Ladies Team came 5th place which effort rich experience played Canadian Dart Deaf Championship 2014 at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. All of us Alberta Dart players were enjoyed challenge every different against other provinces dart teams. Amazing story CDDC 2014 broke their record this year because 166 Dart players, who attend Dart Games and also want encourage all of you everyone are welcome join and play dart expand more players in the future. There’s no limits of Dart Team across the provinces of Canada. ADDA are looking forward CDDC 2016 at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and seeking expanded welcome more dart players in Alberta.

Adam Northey’s Story

My experience in Ottawa – CDDC (Canadian Deaf Darts Championship) was different environment between hearing and deaf tournament. I see lot deaf players and fans around in the hall where darts play.

My two strange memories is fire alarm during playoff knock out with men team was trailed 1-0 to Manitoba and we had stay outside. We feel cold until we returned and won 3-1 as team work on my men team in quarterfinal before we arrived to Final and lost to Toronto team as 4 – 2. We won 2nd place.

Other strange memories – I played against my former province Saskatchewan and felt funny that I played against them and familiar faces from my former home province but we beated them in double men team (2-1)- suppose 3-0 as I gave them one win before we berth first place in round robin group and Men team (3-0) in robin round games.

I had great experience played there as my first trip in national deaf sports.

Emily Stocki’s Story

We played darts at Ottawa, Ontario on November 5th-9th, 2014. It is my first time to attend. To my surprised, we have 166 players from 9 provinces by coast to coast! Sweet!

Alberta mixed team; Jim Fleckenstein, Adam Northery, Terri Watts and Emily Stocki made in the playoffs till the second round we are lost.

Alberta Double Team Women’s is Terri Watts and Emily Stocki. We were almost got out of the playoffs but we made in. And we waited for 2 hours for other teams until the playoffs start. We lost by Toronto.

Alberta quad women’s team is Terri Watts, Emily Stocki, Elaine Schuh and Grace Hayden is also made in the playoffs. For the first round, we lost by another team from Toronto.

I have enjoyed and I have fun to meet new/old faces and they are wonderful people. Love to see them again in next 2016 at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia! I’m super exciting for 2018 because the tournament will be in Edmotnon, Alberta. Our Home!
