Close to 100 people came out to a public meeting about the fate of 8.1 hectares in Westporte on Nov. 18—and many were not pleased.

“The City of Port Alberni is considering the possibility of issuing a call for proposal,” city planner Scott Smith told the crowd.

Currently, just east of Westporte are 68-acres of city

owned green space—currently earmarked as future development in the official community plan.

The city is proposing that the western 8.1 hectares (approximately 20 acres) be developed.

To assuage concerns about a possible Rainbow Gardens expansion into the current 0.6 ha Westporte park elsewhere in the neighbourhood, any developer would be required to develop 0.8 ha of the proposed area into an active park.

The top 8.5 ha (21 acres) of the 68-acre

plot would remain as natural park area, while the remaining southeast portion would be untouched.

Mayor Mike Ruttan told the crowd that gathered at Echo Centre on Nov. 18 that seniors’ housing was still a priority for the city, despite their dissatisfaction with Rainbow Gardens’ previous proposal.

“Council wasn’t completely satisfied with what we’d been presented,” said Ruttan.

“But that doesn’t alter the increasing

need to deal with housing for seniors.”

He cited the city’s concerns over the more than 175 seniors living at home who need other care and seniors inappropriately housed at the hospital.

“Island Health is projecting a 96 per cent increase in the 75 and older population by 2034—that’s not that far in the

distance.”But while Westporte

residents said they understood the need for seniors’ housing, the weren’t pleased with the way the city was going about it.

“You’ve totally dismissed the idea that moving the park elsewhere would endanger our children,” one Westporte resident told Ruttan.

“Do you want to be the council that pulled down this great forest?” another resident asked to applause from the audience.

Drainage was also a concern, with residents in the area telling the city that “groundwater is a serious problem in the winter.”

“I don’t see how it would be possible for the city to redo all of the drainage system in the area,” said a resident.

Born in Scotland in 1922, Doug Thomson

immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1927.

“I spent all my life on Vancouver Island, mostly in Ladysmith, until I moved to Port Alberni in 2006,” says Thomson, a tenant of Heritage Place in Port Alberni.

“My father was a coal miner and so was I for a while, and my mother was a housewife. My younger brother was born in Ladysmith in 1927.”

Thomson, who did all his schooling in Ladysmith, worked as a winch man in the underground coal mine in South Wellington for more than four years. He then went on to work in the forest industry for the Comox Logging Railway Company, when he was 24 years old.

While there, the company changed hands, “but I decided to stay, despite the change, so I worked in the Nanaimo area for the next 41 years with them,” he says.

His career with the company consisted of several types of jobs, including the one as a choker man. Unfortunately, his work with the company came to a stall when he suffered a severe injury, which kept him off his duties for two years.

Followed his long convalescent period, the company offered him a “grease monkey”. He started on his apprenticeship and began attending night school, and from there on, he gradually made his way up to a heavy duty mechanic. He was in charge

of maintaining the company’s trucks until his retirement in 1987.

In 1949, he married Betty Melluish. The couple had two

children: a girl, born in 1951, and a boy, in 1955.

The Thomsons travelled to various well-known world tourist places,

including four trips to Hawaii, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, a cruise to Alaska, etc. Unfortunately, Betty Thomson passed away at the age of 65.

In younger days, Doug Thomson enjoyed making model planes, ships and trains, which he gave away to the family and friends. Another pastime he truly enjoyed was salmon

fishing, which he did in a 14-foot fishing boat he owned several years ago.

“Also, in my teens, I played softball and soccer,” he recalls.

In 2006, he decided to move to Port Alberni, where members of his family lived. “For a year I lived on Victoria Quay before renting an apartment on 11th Avenue, which I kept until I moved to Heritage Place in February 2014,”, says the grandfather of six great-grandchildren.

“Two of them live in New Westminster,” he said.

Being an avid reader, Thomson has read many books in his life, but lately, due to his poor eyesight, he spends time listening to audio books he borrows from the local library.

“Fortunately, Heritage Place is an ideal place for me. Here I attend several events they schedule for us, such as singing programs and other interesting entertaining activities. I take part in many of those activities.”

SUSAN QUINN/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Members of the RCMP Emergency Disposal Unit investigate an incendiary device that detonated inside a home on Stuart Avenue west of Port Alberni, Friday morning. Two men were treated at West Coast General Hospital and released, and a woman was airlifted to hospital in Victoria with non life-threatening injuries following the blast. A cause has not been identified.

Still no answers following explosion

SUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Port Alberni RCMP are still investigating an incendiary device that exploded at a rural home on Friday morning.

A Port Alberni woman was airlifted to hospital in Victoria with injuries to her hands and her family is shaken and wondering why they have been targeted after an incendiary device exploded at

their Stuart Avenue home.

Port Alberni RCMP were called to the rural residence just after 9 a.m. Friday after receiving a report about an incendiary device that had detonated.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the injured woman located a package in the driveway of the home and brought it inside,” RCMP Inspector Mac Richards said.

“While moving the package, an explosion occurred.”

The package was filled with plastic shopping bags and yet-to-be-determined contents, Richards said.

Three members of the RCMP’s Emergency Disposal Unit arrived on the scene around 4 p.m. to speak with family members and survey the scene, which had been cordoned off for several hours.

◆ COVER STORY

‘Wonder Women’ kicking cancerHEALTH: | School community embraces two of their own with support, fundraising.

KRISTI DOBSONSPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Carrie Nahorney and Elizabeth Platz have more

in common than their neighbourhood and professions. The two South Port residents and teachers were both diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year.

They were shocked by the unexpected news but have taken on the challenge with a positive attitude through treatments and are leaning on each other for support.

When Nahorney found out another

friend was diagnosed with breast cancer, she decided to go for a mammogram in March.

She has a family history of the disease, but was not experiencing any symptoms nor discovered any lumps.

The exam was taken as a general precaution.

“I was called back for a second

mammogram and ultrasound,” Nahorney said. “The next day they wanted to do a biopsy and I knew right then it was cancer. My chest fell to the floor.”

She said she was in the best shape of her life and was in training for a Mudderella obstacle race.

“I thought, how on earth could I have breast cancer,” she said.

On April 8, Nahorney had a double mastectomy, although the cancer was only in her left breast.

“I am glad of that decision to take both,” she said. “My husband

and I decided to attack the treatment as aggressively as possible. We want it to be it.”

After wrapping up six months of chemotherapy, Nahorney now faces 28 days straight of radiation, followed by hormone therapy and possibly reconstructive surgery.

She said she is taking it in steps and is grateful to have a strong support network of friends and family.

“It is hard not knowing what is next,” she said.

In lieu of fl owers, donations are greatly appreciated for Ty Watson House, 3088 – 3rd Ave, Port Alberni, BC, V9Y2A5and/or the BC Cancer Foundation, 686 Broadway #150, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1G1.

Our sincerest gratitude goes to Wendy Johnsen and Colleen for

going above and beyond with Anne’s medical care at home.

We hoped we had more time, but it was not to be. She will be greatly missed but always remembered.

FLEMING, Anne passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Nov. 7, 2015, at the age of 65, with family by her side. Th is was following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer for nearly two and a half years. She is survived by her loving husband Glen; daughter Robyn (Mike), sons Brett and Bo (Alanna); grandchildren Cory, Justin (Leslie), Nathan, Mia and Keaton; great-grandchildren Haylie and Maria; father Wallace; mother June; siblings Leo (Susan), Bruce (Elnora), Susan, Tracy (Leonard), and Cody; nieces and nephews Shannon, Tiff any, Brittany, Rebekah, Jennifer, Nic, Ashley and Jessica; as well as numerous extended family members.Anne was born in Edmonton, but grew up and went to school in Calgary, Nelson and Surrey. She lived in B.C. on the mainland for many years as an adult, moved to Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island 1981, then settled in Port Alberni in 1983. She soon fell in love with the Alberni Valley and a few years later opened Flandangles Kitchen and Gifts store. Th is became her pride and joy and has been in operation for 27 years. Not only was she a successful business owner, she was strongly committed to the community through organizations such as Salmon Fest, Kinettes, Sorority and the Women’s Business Network, to name just a few. She enjoyed spending time on ‘her’ island on Sproat Lake, traveling, camping and, of course, shopping. She got to many places on her bucket list over the last year or so, including: Portugal (a favourite), France, England, Mexico, Newfoundland, PEI and Nova Scotia. She attended her grand-son’s wedding in New Brunswick, visited her Aunt Rosemary in Montreal, stayed in old Quebec City, and earlier this year fl ew to Alberta to see longtime friend Lorraine and to visit her father. When not running her store, Anne loved being with her family most of all. She was strong-willed, competitive, feisty, fully involved and ever generous. She loved playing (and winning) cribbage, hearts, scrabble, bananagrams and solitaire whenever she could. A celebration of Anne’s life will be held sometime in the spring of 2016.

She loved learning diff erent crafts and passing her knowledge on to others. Many will remember her working so diligently at her wonderful cards that meant so much to her. She was community oriented and an active member of Beta Sigma Phi, the Red Hat Society and Strummers. Her generous heart and kind spirit touched and infl uenced the hearts of many. Jane's beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her family and friends.

LOVER, Raymond

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of

Raymond Lover on November 13th at the young age of 50.

Raymond is predeceased by his parents John and Frieda Lover and his brother-in-law Brent Harris.  He will be greatly missed by his siblings Wendy (John), Dyan (Ron), Johnny (Patti), Brenda (Floyd) and Sharon, his many nieces and nephews, his relatives in Holland especially cousin Rem and wife Janneke, his beloved dog Keifer and many dear friends and fans.

Mae Selena Hunter (nee. Anderson)

May 21, 1928 - October 16, 2015

Mae Selena Hunter passed away peacefully at her residence in Parksville, BC, on October 16, 2015 at the age of 87 years.

Mae was predeceased by her parents and three sisters. She is survived by children, Craig, Todd, Marc (Angela), Lori Currell (Bruce), Grant (Deborah), and by 13 grandchildren, Aaron, Patrik, Aimee, Robert, Michel, Chantelle, Akela, Joel, Nathan, Brooklyn, Tyanna, Stephen & Nicholas and great grandchildren.

Mae was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, but lived most of her life in Port Alberni, BC, where she raised her 5 children. Mae was an accomplished and independent woman who will be remembered for her feisty personality and mischievous sense of humour. On November 5, 1986 , at a time of life when many would be planning on slowing down, Mae graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts at the age of 58. Mae loved art and animals, especially horses which were predominately featured in the many drawings and paintings that Mae created. Her artwork was displayed in galleries and homes here and abroad. A few years ago, Mae achieved yet another dream by publishing a book of her artwork that chronicled her progression as an artist and was a reflection of her most heartfelt passions in life such as the preservation of the Roosevelt Elk and Vancouver Island Marmot. In later years she moved to Parksville BC, and spent the remainder of her days in Stanford Place, where she made friends with the fellow residents and staff.

Mae will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

No service by request. Those who wish may make a donation in Mae’s memory to a wildlife charity of their choice.

residents that any

development of the 8.1 ha would require a storm water

management plan and “cannot increase past pre-development levels.”

Questions were also asked of why a seniors’ facility couldn’t go anywhere in South Port, where empty land is available, or at the former high school site on Burde Street.

“There’s tons of land available to be developed in South Port... I really don’t get why we’re going out into the middle of the bush?”

This is the second time this year that the city has grappled publicly with what the right course of action should be for Westporte.

In December, Rainbow Gardens proposed an expansion of their seniors’ facility into the neighbouring Westporte Park.

Their proposal would have required the city to sell the park to Rainbow Gardens.

The sale was panned by Westporte residents, who took issue with almost everything to do with the sale—the mere $163,000 Rainbow Gardens would pay, the safety of a proposed replacement park to the northeast of the current one, and the fact that many of the residents moved to

the neighbourhood specifically for the existing park.

This time however, Rainbow Gardens board member Daniel Watts said that despite a community notice sent out to Westporte residents by the City of Port Alberni mentioning a “possible sale of park space to Rainbow Gardens,” no new proposals had been sent forth from the seniors facility.

Coun. Sharie Minions, who sits of the city’s Rainbow Gardens committee, confirmed that Rainbow Gardens was only informed of the public meeting approximately a week ahead of [email protected]

Since 1939 Port Alberni Kinsmen club have offered community-minded people the opporutunity to make our city a better place to live . Through fundraising, leadership and personal development , our clubs enable vol-

unteers to help others in ways that no one person could do alone. Together as a whole, and in our everyday lives, our members put serving the commu-nity’s greatest needs at the forefront, of all we do as Kin. The Port Alberni Kinsmen un-

dertake a wide variety of of local fundraising and service projects. Our club operates autonomously when determining how it fundraises and distributes those funds within the local community. Through a variety of service proj-

ects organized by clubs, Kin Canada has collectively helped thousands, possibly millions,of people in need. Kin members can proudly say they contributed more than $1 billion to Canadian communities, including $36 million for cystic fibrosis research and hundreds of millions for parks, play-grounds and community facilities. The Kinsmen Club of Port Alber-

ni was founded by Harold Warren in1936. In 1946 the Kinsmen took over running the local agricultural fair at the request of the Farmer Institute and formed the Al-berni District Fall Fair, an or-ganization running primarily by the Port Alberni Kinsmen in which it would own the fair grounds. The club has been very active in the communi-ty, helping tidal wave victims In 1965 and building the community health center in Alberni. Whether building a shel-

ter along the Kitsuksis walk, serving free dinners to seniors during heri-tage week, helping Bread of Life and literacy in the valley or raising Canadi-an flags, our members grow from the

projects and live for the challenges faced by services groups today. If you would like to give back to your community, grow personally and make new friends give us a call or drop in on a meeting!

From / A6 “Going from chemo

to radiation is like going from the known to the unknown and I have some anxiety about that, but it is helpful to talk to people who have gone through it.”

One of those friends is Platz, who was diagnosed with breast cancer on May 11. They have been beside each other every step of the way.

“I remember vividly feeling saddened

and shocked that such a vibrant and healthy person could be diagnosed with cancer,” Platz said about Nahorney’s diagnosis.

Platz’s story is a rare one. Findings show that about 1 in every 3000 woman are diagnosed with breast cancer while pregnant. At the time of diagnosis, Platz was 33 weeks pregnant with her second child. Immediately, the question of the baby’s

safety was foremost for Platz, her husband, Kevin, and their doctor, Dr. Van Zyl.

Platz credits for Dr. Van Zyl for her care and support.

The decision was made to deliver early at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, as the hospital has the neonatal intensive-care unit. Josiah Michael Platz was born one month premature on May 26 and was cared for in the NICU for one

week with a few issues regarding his lungs and chest.

Josiah is now a healthy, happy baby, but the first four months of his life were tough on his mom: Platz underwent a string of surgeries, chemotherapy sessions and doctor’s appointments.

Nahorney said it has been helpful having Platz living next door.

“It is a bad club to belong to, but it has been a blessing to have Elizabeth across the street,” she said. “We have someone to talk to. I was able to help her through the shock of finding out and we have become ‘chemo buddies’. She came with me after her own treatments were done.”

“Carrie has been such a great friend, supporter and encourager through it all,” Platz said. “We often joke that we are so glad to be going through this together, just that we wish it was under different circumstances.”

From the beginning, Nahorney and Platz have adopted a “superwoman” theme to help them through the tough times.

“At every treatment I wear something

‘wonder woman’ to remind myself that I know I can do it,” Nahorney said.

Also helping along the way is the support of family, friends and coworkers. Nahorney said she was never without a meal and her housekeeping was taken care of.

Colleagues of John Paul II Catholic School and School District 70, headed by Stacey Manson, have embraced the women by providing support and fundraising to help them through their cancer journeys.

Their school communities put on a sold out dinner and dance in the John Paul II gym last Saturday.

Nahorney said the event was a chance for the two to enjoy something positive with their whole families.

“I am really looking forward to being around my friends as I make this next transition,” she said prior to the fundraiser.

“When I look back on my journey, I am so amazed by all the caring people in my life,” Platz said.

“I am so blessed to have such a wonderful family, church, friends and community support network.”

Serving with respect and integrityThe holiday season can be a difficult time

for those who have lost a family member or a close friend, and taking the opportunity to remember and celebrate the life of a loved one is very important.

The Staff of Chapel of Memories Funeral Directors is honored to offer

the community a “Special Pre-Holiday Service

of Remembrance” in memory of those we have lost. This will

be a special service of reflection to help those who have lost a loved one cope with the holiday season. As there will be a time of fellowship and refreshment following the service we would appreciate knowing if you plan to attend. This will allow us to properly plan for all who wish to participate in this special afternoon.
