Message From The A-37 Editors, etc…..

SHEARWATER is still on the hard at Bock Marine , near Beaufort, NC. We’ve finished the prop-shaft repairs, but discovered a 4” crack on the leading edge of her rudder which needs attention.

There is no discernable movement when one tries to move the rudder sideways by grabbing the bottom of the rudder and pulling.... (and the rudder pin has no 'slop' in the shoe, as several years ago we replaced the worn pin). Since, from seeing photos of A-37 rudders dis-assembled, and from doing some exploratory drillings (with a 1/8" drill) years ago, the bottom rudder stock appears to only be about 12" or less in length, we feel quite 'uncomfortable' about this crack. Had planned on placing a fiberglass 'patch' over the crack using some 5" glass tape and epoxy, but think this is only a 'band aid' approach.

Sorry, but unfortunately, we neglected to take any photos of the crack…..

Page 5: ALBERG 37 INTERNATIONAL OWNERS ASSOCIATIONalberg37.org/Newsletters/VOL25-NO3-SUMMER-2015/Vol_…  · Web viewVolvo Penta model 2003 27 hp. 3 cylinder, fresh water cooled. Low hours,

After consulting with ‘Kenny’ (Bock) the owner of the boatyard, we’ve had the rudder removed and it’s currently ‘in work’ by Kenny and his crew. He felt that the rudder is quite repairable, so we decided to let them do the work. We will be driving down to Beaufort sometime in July to check on the ‘In-Work Progress’.

We hope to ‘resume’ our ‘southbound mission’ from Beaufort this fall (early October, 2015). If all ‘works out’, we plan to spend several months in the Abacos (Bahamas) this winter…. That’s the reason we are scheduling the Fall Rendezvous in early September (Labor Day Weekend)……

Tom and Kaye back home in Kinsale, VA

Original Owner of PAT-SEA Passes

It is with deep regret and sadness that we report the passing of Bill Shrader on May 8th, 2015 at 2 A.M. in the morning. Bill is survived by his wife Pat. Bill and Pat were the owners of PAT-SEA, a 1979 ALBERG 37 MK-II YAWL, HULL ID #201, and sailed her for years in Lakes Erie and Ontario.

New Members

Welcome aboard to Martin van Houten, of Roadtown, Tortola, British Virgin Islands, the new owner of the 1968 MK-I Sloop CHRYSALIS, which is also berthed in Tortola.

(ED. Note: It's been years since we've heard from the previous owner(s) of CHRYSALIS (Mike Phelps and Miles Pilch) both of which listed the boat's location as Tortola, BVI. So we are 'assuming' that Martin obtained ownership of CHRYSALIS from Miles. We had once heard that CHRYSALIS had previously made a circumnavigation, (Mike Phelps) according to a Canadian Yachting article..... Interesting! We'd love to hear some more recent 'history' regarding CHRYSALIS.)

Welcome aboard to Harvey Robillard III of Fairport, NY, the owner of the 1984 MK-II Yawl LEEWAY II, (formerly owned by Wayne and Cindy Milroy of Oshawa, Ontario). LEEWAY II will be berthed in Silver Marina, Forked River, NJ. (ED. Note: We recently heard the following from Harvey: “My Alberg 37 MKII Yawl lost her rudder off of the Jersey shore …….. Had to be towed in to Barnegat Light by US Coast Guard. She is sitting on the hard at Silver Marina, Forked River, NJ.”)

---------------

Welcome aboard to Tim and Liz Brown, of Mattapoisett, MA, the new owners of LINDISFARNE II, a 1974 MK-II Yawl. The boat is berthed in Mattapoisett, MA

---------------

Welcome aboard to Jorg Mattern of Dade City, FL, the new owner of the 1973 MK-II Yawl MAJA. Jorg purchased the boat from Dick and Jo Murphie. Jorg mentioned that MAJA is his ‘Project Boat’. MAJA is located in Moore Haven, FL.

---------------

Welcome aboard to Gerry Dickson of Palm Coast, FL, the new owner of the 1977 MK-II Sloop ASATO MARU. The boat is berthed at Ponce Inlet, FL.

---------------

Welcome aboard to James and Laurie Schwark, of Alpine, CA, the new owner of the 1969 Sloop KIKAO. The boat was previously named WANESA.

Welcome aboard to Ryan Easter of Charlotte, NC. Although an owner of an Alberg 37 (at least not yet!), he is actively looking for an Alberg 37, and has become quite familiar with the boat through all the contributions on the A-37 website made by A-37 IOA members.

(Ed. Note: As you can see we’ve recently had quite a few ‘turnovers’ of ownership of these ‘Good Old Boats’. If for some reason we missed someone please let us know!)

Voyaging Tips(Ed. Note: The following article recently appeared in the “Ocean Navigator’

Newsletter – to view the article, simply ‘click’ on the links below.)

Turning a boat in its own lengthOne of the useful things while voyaging is a technique called torque turns. These allow you to turn a boat 360 degrees in an area no longer than a boat

length. We have employed torque turns on dozens of occasions to turn around our 45-foot Liberty cutter Nine of Cups in a tight marina, or to line

the boat up with a slip when there was no maneuvering room.

News From Members

Tom McMaster and Rose Hansmeyer, the owners of the 1985 MK-II Sloop SOJOURN, recently announced that they are placing SOJOURN on the market (see the ‘For Sale’ section of the newsletter). (Ed. Note: Kaye and I spent a week in MN attending our oldest grandson’s high school graduation back in early June. While in MN, we ‘got together for lunch’ with Tom and Rose near Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. We’ve known Tom and Rose for years, and stopped by in Kinsale on their first ‘southbound’ cruise. They spent the past year or so cruising the Bahamas, on their way back from the Caribbean, where they cruised for many years.)

Sieg and Holly Lehmann, of British Columbia recently sold CALIDRIS their 1979 MK-ll sloop. “After 18 years of ownership it was sad to see her go, but the new owners have great sailing plans for her.”

---------------

Wayne Steeves, of Lothian, MD, and the owner of JOYOUS, a 1974 MK-II Yawl recently sent the following ‘Testimonial’ via email of his use of COPPER COAT (High Performance 10+ Year Anti-Fouling System):

“I've had Coppercoat on my tartan 30 for 6 or 7 years now. Chose not to coat the lead keel to maintain a good lightning ground. Only short haul about every 3 years now but zero hard growth on bottom having done nothing to it while keel is loaded with hard growth. You do get some soft growth and the prop which isn't painted will still need cleaning but no more bottom painting. It's certainly paid for itself many times over at this point.

Coppercoat for the A37 is 9 kits and about 1200 bucks. You do have to remove all bottom paint down to barrier coat. I have seen Coppercoat bottoms at the 15+ year mark. Figure over 20 years you'll need to touch up the bottom (at 10 to 15 year mark) with 1 or 2 more kits so material cost ends up about 75 bucks per year annualized but reduced haul outs and almost no labor going forward gets your money back out in just a few years.

Reviews are very good but filter out the ‘armchair elitists’ with no product experience and those who mistake the now failed product Copperpoxy. Market is saturated in the UK with a lot of boats approaching 20 years but growing here now.

Product is approved in strict California laws. Basically a formulated epoxy with pure copper powder suspended matrix. Once your old bottom paint is removed application is simple. Only trick is to scuff up the surface with a light sanding to expose the copper matrix after initial application cures fully. You only need do this once. Some folks early on failed to do so (read instructions) and claimed it didn't work which was easily corrected.

Hope that was helpful.

I don't have any commercial involvement with the product - just a customer.

Page 9: ALBERG 37 INTERNATIONAL OWNERS ASSOCIATIONalberg37.org/Newsletters/VOL25-NO3-SUMMER-2015/Vol_…  · Web viewVolvo Penta model 2003 27 hp. 3 cylinder, fresh water cooled. Low hours,

Wayne”(ED. Note: We also have NO commercial involvement with this product – just passing the information along….!!!)

---------------

Bob Prescott, of Marshfield, MA, the owner of the 1980 MK-II Yawl THULE, recently reported on his ‘rudder problem’ which resulted in having a new rudder built by Foss Foam:“Billings Marine in Stonington, MD did all the contact with Foss after introductions were made. A few weeks ago we were in Maine. The fiberglass work was finished and all primed ready for AwlGrip but the boat was third in line to get in the paint shop after lobster boats. Lobster boats always win. The rudder arrived on a pallet and was not unpacked yet. They were waiting until she was in the travel lift to move to the paint shop. She must be picked up to remove or to install the rudder. So I don’t know if it fits. I will be there end of next week.Billings Marine shipped the rudder to Foss to eliminate uncertainty. The rudder has a bronze internal structure but it was bent and not reusable. Walker said that currently available bronzes cannot be bent like the original so they use Stainless Steel…….. Regards, Bob”

---------------

Bob and Cheryl Seaver of Winsted, CT, the owners of the WIND SONG, their 1973 MK-II Yawl are in the process of a major refit! They recently wrote: “Thanks so much for getting back to us about the water tankage. At this point, we're probably going with a bladder tank/tanks forward, but we have considered building an integral tank in the future, just no time for it now. We will be replacing the smaller tank mid ships with a plastic tank (we still have that tank in one piece, so we can measure it's capacity) We have really jumped into refitting Wind Song with both feet; it's going to look a lot worse before it gets better, but she is well worth the time and effort.

Thanks again. All the best to you !

Cheryl and Bob”

Our apologies to those items which we may have missed.

We need a good candidate for " Featured A-37 " It's been several years since we had a new addition to the Featured A-37 list.
