BUS PASSES On Monday, September 21st, each student at AHS riding a bus was issued a bus rider’s pass. This is an effort to prevent the overloading of first and second bus loads. Bus passes are color coded so that the bus drivers will
able to identify AHS students and insure that their individual buses are not overloaded. Students are responsible for presenting their bus passes to the bus driver when loading the bus. If a student does not have
a bus pass, he or she may not have the opportunity to ride the bus.
PARENT/COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Brenda Watson is the AHS Parent/Community Involvement Coordinator (PCIC). Her role is to act as informa‐tion liaison between AHS faculty and staff, the community and parents. The vision for PCIC is to develop and implement effective parent informational sessions in various community locations; and to maintain a wide
variety of readily available human and material resources that will enhance the learning environment at AHS.
TUTORIAL OPPORTUNITIES Successful efforts have been made to provide students with additional academic assistance during after‐school hours through tutorials. Both on‐site and community‐based tutorials have been established to meet the needs of our students. If you have any questions about tutorial locations and times of operation, please contact us at
704‐982‐3711.
SCHOOL HOURS Lately, there have been a number of students staying after school and wandering around aimlessly throughout the campus. School hours for students are from 7:30am—3:10pm. All students are expected to leave campus
at 3:10pm each day, unless they are involved in tutorials, school clubs, sports practices or band. Those students involved in extra‐curricular after‐school activities are expected to remain in their designated areas.
Failure to comply with this request may result in administrative actions of suspension.
Open House on September 17th was a big success! Thank‐you to all of the parents who came out to meet with the teachers. Congratulations to all of our door prize winners!

Art Club took a trip to NoDa (short for North Davidson Street) on Friday, September 4th for the bi‐monthly gallery crawl. We will be taking several trips to NoDa (pronounced “Know‐dah”) during the year as well as planning other funtivities. Art Club met on September 17th to greet new members and elect officers. If you would like to join Art Club (you don’t have to be an artist, just interested in art), then come to any of the
frequent meetings. Dues are $5.00 bi‐annually.

In the FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences) Department at AHS there is a Housing and Interiors course offered. This semester they are off to a great start learning about the rental and buying process of a home. Students traveled to the Stanly County Courthouse and visited the deed room and the mapping department to see first‐hand some of the details involved in purchasing their first home. In the Foods I class, students are learning bout the nutrients
needed by their bodies and how to include them in a more healthy lifestyle. In Foods II class students are learning how to start their in‐school entreprise by studying entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship. These students will soon be catering lunches to the faculty as a class business. Both Foods I and Foods II classes enjoyed seeing a student chef from Johnson and Wales University demonstrate his abilities and teach them how to make fondant (an icing used for wedding cakes). He also explained all the benefits of attending a world‐renowned culinary institute like J&W, where TV personality
chef Emeril Lagasse graduated from.
The culminating activity of the North Carolina Graduation Project is the oral presentation in which the senior shares what he or she has learned through their research and work on a chosen topic. This crucial part of the project takes place before a panel of
judges called the Review Board. We invite you to serve as a judge in the 2009‐2010 school year and to participate in this exciting day for our seniors.
Each Review Board will be comprised of three to five judges from the community who will listen to the student’s 10‐minute presentation, followed by an opportunity for impromptu questions. Each judge will assess the student’s performance by
specific criteria outlined on a rubric. Training in using this rubric will be conducted on the actual presentation day at the school site. During this event, you will evaluate approximately four to five presentations, and your commitment should take no longer
than three hours. If you are willing to serve as a judge, please complete the interest form (found on the AHS website). After submitting the form,
you will always receive a letter detailing the presentation date, time and agenda for the school(s) you have selected approximately six weeks in advance of this scheduled event. At that time, you will have the option of accepting or declining
participation according to your availability at the time of the contact. We appreciate your interest in and support of our students. Without your participation, the Graduation Project would not be such a meaningful experience for our seniors. If you have additional questions or would like to notify me of other who are
interested in serving, please contact me at (704)‐983‐5151 or email me at [email protected]

This fall all classrooms at AHS were outfitted with new desktop computers and video projectors. All teachers received a new
laptop and ActivSlate. The Promethean ActivSlate 50 is a wireless, fully integrated mini‐board; small enough to sit on a desk or to
move around the classroom. The computer lab and media center also received new desktop com‐puters and projectors. This new equipment is part of the county’s 21st Century Classroom project. Over the next four years, all of the county schools will have this
new equipment installed.
