Message from the ChairCommitted to Serve
It’s a tremendous honor and privilege to serve as the incoming chair of your Albany Area Chamber of Commerce.
A few months back a Chamber colleague shared an article penned by Bob Harris, a reputable non-profit management consultant. In his piece Harris shared his plan for recovery by associations, chambers, and nonprofits, which he believed are well positioned to lead recovery for their communities in the wake of COVID19. While reading one line in particular stood out to me, Harris challenged those in positions of influence to “avow to be the champion for the people you serve.”
The Greek word for service, diakoneo, is defined as one who executes at the commands of another. In a practical sense you can visualize someone who waits upon, or is an attendant of another. However, when you drill down to the real essence of the word, the idea of service is to advance another’s interest even at the expense of sacrificing one’s own. Too often in our culture today we have that backwards. We think of service as something we are to receive, rather than something we are to perform.
We are fortunate that the Chamber’s board of directors, like our community, embody that service-oriented mindset. As area businesses we may have very different reasons for belonging to the Chamber but we are united in the common purpose to serve our family, friends, and neighbors. Harris’ idea of “being the champion for the people we serve,” is encapsulated in the very mission of the Chamber to be “Your Business and Community Advocate.”
I would like to express my heart-felt appreciation to out-going Chair Kristal Dufour for her countless contributions to the Chamber these past 12 months. The Chamber’s successful rebranding and marketing initiatives championed by Kristal will continue to pay dividends for years to come. I am grateful that I will be able to rely on her steady hand and sound council during my term as chair.
As I reflect on the challenges that our community will confront in the months ahead, I am
encouraged by opportunity I have been given to put the interests of the Chamber, and
specifically the interests of your businesses before my own.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
Debbie Burks
Owner, Jacopetti’s Catering
Personal backgroundI was born and raised in Albany, Oregon. Although I currently reside in Scio, Albany has always been my “hometown”. I’ve been married for 38 years to the most kind and supportive man. You may have met my husband Ron on events we have catered. Jacopetti’s Catering has been ours for 20 years and our sole support since 2008.
Biggest issue facing Albany
The biggest issue I feel that Albany is currently facing is keeping small business afloat. Covid-19 has really had a negative impact on business and small businesses have been hit especially hard. I do know that when the community works together great things happen. The more we can help each other, the better we will all be.
Chamber/community involvementWe’ve been members of the Albany Chamber for 20 years. While we are unable to attend many of the functions due to our job schedule, we often cater for them.
Business marketing nicheWell, our business slogan is “We love to cook for you!”, so if you eat then you’re our target client! We do a large amount of business catering and just about any event that requires a meal.

Chamberlin House Hires Executive Director
Carrie Howell was named the new Executive Director at Albany’s Chamberlin House Inc. in May.
Howell graduated from Oregon State University after earning a degree in psychology and sociology.
Before being hired as the new Executive Director, Howell held the position of Program Director at
Chamberlin. Prior to coming to Chamberlin, she held similar positions at Dungarvin Oregon Inc. and
Corvallis’ Trillium Family Services. She has been involved in working with the disabled, in various
capacities, for over 28 years.
Howell notes, “I am excited to be in this new position and look forward to doing the best work I can to
honor the residents, staff, and mission of this outstanding organization.” In her new position, Howell
oversees all Chamberlin’s housing, programs and staff. Chamberlin House Inc. is a non-profit agency
that serves intellectual and developmentally disabled adults in Linn County. Howell succeeds Judie
Foster-Lupkin.
