BEGINNING SWING DANCE Would you like to learn to dance but don’t have a partner? Do you have very little experience dancing? This class is for you! everyone will start with the basics of single-time, which is one of the easiest and most useful forms of swing dances you will ever learn. You will also learn both to lead and follow. Come and have fun while dancing the night away!

FIRST DANCE FOR NEWLYWEDSYour first dance as newlyweds should be memorable… not nerve-racking. gain confidence and skills for your “first dance” at your wedding. The non-verbal communication involved in partner dancing is a powerful tool…it encourages patience, teamwork, trust, respect, and cooperation. Your dance class can be customized to your level of dance experience.

LATIN AND MIXED BALLROOM (Ages 16-Adults)Do you have a wedding, cruise, or class reunion in your future? Learn a variety of ballroom dance routines in this Latin and Mixed Ballroom dance series. The first session will feature the Cha Cha, a Latin dance that is similar to the rumba and to the Mambo, except the “slow” step of the rumba and the Mambo is replaced with a triple step. This is a party dance! The Cha Cha music should produce a happy, carefree, party-time dance expression. The second session will feature the Tango. Originating in Argentina, the Tango is the most seductive couple dance to this day. It is passionate, melancholic and it still ignites excitement.

Kara Cone Connects With ZumbaKara Cone moved to Albany from Portland five years ago. She liked the friendly atmosphere of the smaller community and has been getting to know new people quickly. She’s been taking Zumba classes with Cheryl “CJ” Downing through Albany Parks & recreation since January of this year and is delighted with the result!

“I decided to try Zumba because you’re supposed to burn 800 to 1,000 calories in an hour,” Kara said. “ I don’t know if it does that, but I do know that I get a great workout.”

Kara started going to Zumba classes on her own but says she has met a lot of nice people in the class which helps make it fun.

Compared to classes at private businesses or clubs, Kara noted, “The Parks & recreation Department’s Zumba is more personal and more interactive! It feels like CJ has a personal connection with everyone in the class. She definitely makes me feel welcome.”

Have You “HEARD” the Latest “SCOOP” About the Albany Softball Program?

This last winter the Albany Parks and recreation Sports Program took on a major project with help from some key sponsors. Our goal was to renovate our softball fields in preparation for “neW” major tournaments coming to our community. These major tournaments bring many teams from outside the community and even outside of our state to Albany. While here, they not only enjoy great tournament play, but they also visit our restaurants, stay in our hotels, and shop in local stores. The economic impact they bring ranges from $150,000 to $1,000,000 for each weekend tournament. We have 25 tournaments scheduled this year, with 4 of these being major tournaments. With the help of sponsors like Ain’t 2 Busy Construction, eC electric, Knife river, Pacific Power, Parr Lumber, Pendle excavating Services and Sun Belt rental we were able to increase the size of our 6 softball fields, creating better drainage, and adding dugouts. While these improvements are great for softball, they are also terrific for the community! The completion of this project in a 10 week turnaround has made it possible for both youth and adult large scale tournaments and their participants to enjoy our Albany parks, softball fields, and community businesses throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons. For more on this exciting project, check out City Bridges and get the complete details!

WHAT oUR PARTICIPANTS ARe SAyING:

“My daughter has only had a handful of coaches that she has truly grown under both athletically and as a person. Jeff is one of those coaches.   She loves the game of basketball and had a difficult season this past year in high school; however Jeff has turned that completely around for her. Her shot is back, her offense and defense are stronger, her confidence and most importantly, her love of the game is back!  Jeff has a way of bringing out the best in his players. He has the ability to teach, encourage, and correct in a way that makes the girls want to do their best. He is a man of integrity, honesty, and enthusiasm for both basketball and his relationship with the girls.” – cindy Kummer
