Description: Articles document an investigation by a Board of U.S. Army Engineers into the

possible causes of and solutions to the formation of ice gorges along the Hudson River, which

annually caused considerable damage due to flooding. The clippings detail the CC’s proposal

and appeal for donations to hire steamboats to plow an opening in the gorges. Other articles

follow the debate over the pros and cons of proposed improvements to the Erie Canal, including

and became an economist, lawyer, and “a practical business man of the widest experience”. He

was a member of the “Expert Committee” named by the Allied nations in 1922 to ascertain

Germany’s ability to settle her war debts. The Reparations Committee in Paris selected unofficial

American members General Charles Gates Dawes and Owen D. Young. They drew up the

Description: Scrapbook donated by Mayor James R. Watt on December 23, 1921. Includes a

transcript from a meeting of “Citizens Committee Appointed by the Mayor to Conduct War Chest

Campaign” (April 28, 1918). Newspaper clippings detail the campaign to raise $1 million in

funds for Albany’s War Chest, a common treasury of all philanthropies approved by the United

States government (i.e., Red Cross, Y.M.C.A./Y.W.C.A, Salvation Army, Knights of Columbus,

etc), to be used in support of the World War I relief movement. Events included an all women’s

parade and a league of volunteers charged with soliciting donations. Many of the clippings are

collection envelopes used in the campaign.

Description: The first page of this book contains a print of the painting Mr. Buyck sold to pay

for his passage to New York. There is additional biographical material about his ancestry and

early years in Belgium. Most of this scrapbook contains photos and prints of his paintings as well

as numerous news articles about area exhibits of his work. Also included are: a copy of his

honorable discharge from the army in 1919, a letter of thanks from President Roosevelt for his

Buyck portrait which now hangs at the Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park, NY, and much historical

information and news clippings about his painting of the first raising of the Stars and Stripes at

Fort Stanwix near Rome NY. Highfield Hall is described with news articles and photos.

Description: This second scrapbook has many news and print photos of Mr. and Mrs. Buyck

taken during their lifetimes. At the beginning of the book is an old photo or print of Bruges,

Belgium and a few WWI army photos. There is much descriptive material about the early lives

of Mr. and Mrs. Buyck in upstate NY where they had a fox farm and of their later lives at

Highfield Hall. Included are biographical notes , written profiles, and news clippings about Mr.

Buyck. There are a few personal papers and letters, one of the latter by Ledyard Cogswell Sr.

inviting him to serve as judge for the selection of WPA artists.
