Change is Inevitable: How and What to Embrace

This presentation looks at the current industry perspective of the Business Analyst and how it was manifested. We will present the need enterprise organizations have and how the evolution and maturation of the BA role can help. Finally, we will review the skills needed for a BA to properly fulfill this role, and how organizations can effectively recruit and empower people with these skills.

Welcome to the Inaugural Albany Capital District IIBA Chapter Business Analysis Development Day!

Our theme for our first BADD is Business Analysis in Transformation – 2016 and Beyond. The role of business analysis in organizations across the globe is evolving and maturing, and business analysts must continue to grow and change to keep pace.

The four tracks being offered at today’s event promise to help all of us with that! Professional Skills; BA Trends; Practitioner; Agile – we hope these tracks will provide you with new knowledge and skills.

Thank you to all of our sponsors. Without them, our business analysis development day simply could not happen. Please visit them at their exhibit tables.

Additionally, special thanks to our volunteers for your time and effort.

Kevin Brennan is a business transformation architect who helps clients achieve business goals through strategy, process management and architecture and analysis. He is a leader in the BA community as a member of IIBA’s board and executive team and shepherded the BABOK Guide through three major releases. Kevin was a member of the PMBOK 5th Edition content development team and worked with the Agile Alliance to develop a framework for agile business analysis.

Carolyn Lonergan has been an analyst and facilitator in the IT and financial services industries for more than 25 years. Carolyn has facilitated requirements, team building, process creation and improvement and planning session for challenging groups resolving complex topics. She has also taught a facilitation class that employed hands-on experience throughout the course.

Facilitation TechniquesGet the techniques and tips you need to facilitate a meet-ing or requirements workshop. Learn how to build trust across your stakeholders, uncover and resolve require-ment conflicts while in session, and help get buy-in for a recommended solution with all parties. You will also learn how an annotated agenda can help you successfully plan a workshop to the right level of detail. Do you need skills on how to manage a difficult group or get them to a deci-sion? We will cover a few of those too.

Art and Science of InfluenceThis session provides a shared understanding and defini-tion of influence, and discusses how professionals can suc-cessfully navigate any organization type to move projects to execution. The session presents several approaches and techniques to improve an individual’s ability to influence. Participants will have the opportunity to test new skills in small group sessions. The program will provide engaging examples of influence being used well and poorly, for pur-poses noble and nefarious.

BABOK 3.0 and IIBA Certification UpdatesThe Business Analyst Body of Knowledge (BABOK) is our standards document. It is the key to growth in our profes-sion, allowing organizations to build a BA organization on an established foundation. It also allows organizations to find practitioners who can quickly fit into that foundation and produce results. The updated BABOK and four new IIBA certifications give us new practices and perspective. This presentation will discuss what is new in the BABOK v3.0, and will review the new certification programs.

Business Architecture and the Business AnalystBusiness architecture often seems like a label in search of a definition. The absence of business architecture makes life harder for business analysts. Instead of focusing on delivering business value, we are forced to spend time figuring out how the business operates and working on requirements that don’t align with business strategy. In this session we’ll discuss how business architecture should and can be the bridge be-tween strategy and tactics in organizational change.

Demystifying Experience DesignBusiness analysts play a critical role in ensuring that software and services are “human centric.” This session will cut through the CX/UX acronyms and buzzwords to give an overview of how personas, journey mapping, user stories, prototyping and other high-value tech-niques can help keep people at the center of technol-ogy projects.

Elicitation “Hacks” for Experienced PractitionersRequirements elicitation is one of the most challenging activities for business analysis. Requirements serve as the foundation for the solution to the business needs and need to be complete, clear, correct and consistent. Leveraging proven means to elicit requirements helps meet quality goals. It involves both identifying sources and the methods to draw out requirements from these sources. A crafty BA will ensure stakeholders collaborate on the requirements and design. Techniques, aka “hacks,” for elicitation and col-laboration with your stakeholders are also covered.

The Role of a Business Analyst in an Agile EnvironmentThis session presents a quick glance into Agile, but the focus is the introduction of key recommended activities for a BA to be part of an Agile team. It is the BA who must become the “value manager” and ensure the value of each delivered sprint is realized. It is also the BA who must ensure user stories align with strategies, other initiatives, enterprise architectures, releases, etc. Basically, it is up to the BA to be the “system thinker” and see the whole picture. Learn how critical it is for business analysts to fit correctly within an Agile organization.

Scaling Scrum in the Real WorldWalk through practical steps to start an Agile program that extends to multi- or single-team projects and how Scrum is scalable. Everything begins with a vision in the world of Agile; understand how to break down a vision into major epics and features and plan them out using a roadmap and release plan. In an Agile project iterations and product increments are used to deliver value early and often. We use this strategy to elicit constant feedback.
