The Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives (ALBA) is an educational non-profit dedicated to promoting social activism and the defense of human rights. ALBA’s work is inspired by the brave American volunteers of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade who fought and died fighting fascism in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). ALBA’s programs include teacher institutes, exhibitions, publications, cultural programs and an annual award for human rights activism, given in partnership with the Puffin Foundation. Drawing on the ALBA collections in New York University’s Tamiment Library, ALBA works to preserve the legacy of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade as an inspiration for present and future generations.

Lyrics

Far and wide as the eye can wander,Heath and bog are everywhere,Not a bird sings out to cheer us,Oaks are standing, gaunt and bare.

[Chorus:]We are the peat bog soldiers. We’re marching with our spades,To the bog.

Up and down the guards are pacing,No one, no one can go through.Flight would mean a sure death facing,Guns and barbed wire greet our view.

But for us there is no complain-ing,Winter will in time be past. One day we shall cry rejoicing,“Homeland dear, you’re mine

at last!”

[Final Chorus:]Then will the peat bog soldiers,March no more with spades,To the bog.

Pet Bog Soldiers

We’ll not yield a foot to Fran-co’s fascists,Even though the bullets fall like sleet. With us stand those peerless men, our comrades,And for us there can be no retreat. Chorus.

Beat the drums and get the bayonets ready.Forward march! For vict’ry’s our reward. With the scarlet banner smash the shacklesInto battle with Thaelmann’s mighty sword. Chorus

Freiheit

There’s a valley in Spain called Jaramait’s a place that we all know so wellwhere we all learned the true cost of freedomand so many of our brave comrades fell.

We are proud of the Lincoln Battalionand the fight for Madrid that it made

there they fought like true sons of the peopleas part of the Fifteenth Bri-gade.

Now we’re far from that valley of sorrowbut its memory we’ll never forgetso before we conclude this reunionlet us honor our glorious dead.

There´s a valley in Spain called Jarama…

Si me quieres escribirya sabes mi paradero.Si me quieres escribirya sabes mi paradero.

Venga Jaleo (Quinto Regimiento)
