ABJJ 10 Year Anniversary  

ABJJ has reached a milestone this month, 10 years in business.  ABJJ has become Alaska’s largest BJJ/MMA 

school with over 300 current students.  However, when we started ABJJ the goal was not to see how many 

students we could get or the business we could build.  The founding principles behind ABJJ were to create a 

training environment where both students and instructors would learn the system in the most efficient way.  

Our view was the most efficient path for learning was: 

Providing a disciplined plan and stick to it.  Every class would be preplanned, every week and month 

would be part of a larger plan.  Similar techniques and concepts would be presented in a way that 

made sense. 

Cardio is king.  It’s hard to execute techniques when you are tired.  Lots of conditioning and free 

rolling would be part of the program. 

Ensure the basics are strong.  There is no point working on fancy moves without knowing the 

fundamentals.   

Build a team mentality.  We did not want the school to be about us, we wanted it to be about 

everyone. 

Be consistent.  You can’t make everyone happy because people want opposite things.  Instead 

deliver the same thing every time and those who like it will stay and those that don’t will leave. 

 

Our plan from 2005 is still the plan in 2015. 

 

Timeline and Milestones Every time an ABJJ member wins a tournament match, MMA flight, or gets a promotion in rank we consider it 

another milestone for ABJJ, but that list would be 10 pages long.  Instead here are some events along our path 

you might not have known about. 

 

October 12 2005, Time for a change 

After years of trying to change our former school it was time to move on and create what we were looking for.  

Day 1 started in Justin’s basement with a 10x10 mat provided by Paul Sturgeon.  Todd, Justin, and Ryder would 

roll in cycles for hours.  At the time Todd was a Brown belt, Justin was a four stripe Purple, and Ryder was a 

Blue belt.  If you ever wondered why Ryder’s defenses are so good it might have had something to do with the 

early days. 

 

November 2005, Time for a bigger mat 

If the goal was to maximize training, we were going to need more people, and a lot more space than Justin’s 

basement.  Ryder and Justin drove all over Anchorage looking for the right spot, we must have looked at 30 

locations.  It had to be in midtown because we wanted it centrally located, we did not want a back alley 

warehouse, and it needed to not have any obvious hazards to grappling.  At the time we figured maybe 20‐30 

people would want to train the way we did.  

 

We found a location we felt suited our needs and ordered mats.  We were on a tight budget and were not 

going to buy high‐end mats, instead we got these 8’x8’ “Home mats” that had foam panels in them.  They 

arrived the day before Thanksgiving 2005. Ryder had an injury that week, Todd was cooking his normal 

massive Thanksgiving dinner, but armed with a 4 pack of Red Bull Justin went in to the school to build mats. 

 

 

   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As we later came to find out the mats didn’t attach to each other well so we had to use mat tape to keep them 

together.  The tape was always a problem and required a lot of maintenance, and by maintenance we mean 

once a month Ryder would be on his hands and knees for two hours cutting out the dirty tape and replacing it 

while Justin followed behind with bleach. 

 

December 2005, Let’s build an army 

We had a location and mats, we were ready to start.  In a stroke of good luck we connected with Kevin Barber 

who was looking for a new home for the Wolf Pack MMA team.  Bringing in Kevin and his group could not 

have worked better; from the start at the new location we had a group of tough guys serious about training.  

Part of our disciplined training plan was that classes start and end on time, and that we stay focused on the 

current class.  The MMA guys purchased gi’s, and trained BJJ.  When BJJ class was done we quickly made room 

for MMA.  To this day you may notice your instructor kicks you off the mat when the class is over to make

2006, Train 

With a place to train and people to train with there was nothing left to do but put in mat work.  People would 

hear about us and come see if this was a good fit for them.  Lots of hard training. 

 

In April 2006 we had Mauricio “Tinguinha” Mariano come up for a seminar.  Justin had trained with Tinguinha 

previously on while on business trips to California as far back as 2004.

ABJJ had countless exciting MMA matches at the AFC with the Wolf pack. 

 

2007‐2008, keep training 

During these years it was really the same model, train hard and find like‐minded people.  The MMA team was 

full of talented guys and we spent a lot of time helping that program. 

 On January 7, 2007 ABJJ became an official Tinguinha BJJ affiliate.  This was an important event for us and one 

we thought about carefully.  We knew we needed some help taking the step from say Brown belt to Black 

belts, and we needed someone to give us some practical guidance on the best training methods for our 

students.  Tinguinha was the perfect fit for us, he had high expectation of what BJJ students should be doing 

and gave us some new insight.  Even back then he correctly told us that if we stay on the path we are on the 

school is going to get a lot bigger.

In 2008 we brought in some new mats.  The old ones were turned into wall mats.  This was done by Ryder and 

Kevin building each wall mat with plywood and vinyl.  At ABJJ today, some of the wall mats in place are from 

our original floor mats from 2005.

2009, Full House 

In January 2005 we had 18 students, by December of 2009 that number had grown to 100.  Our facility could 

not handle the class sizes any more, it was impossible not to be running into others while rolling.  The program 

was the same as it had been on Day 1, we had just accumulated that group of people we were looking for.

2010, Time for a new facility 

This was a transformational year for us.  The school was at capacity and we had to figure out the next move.  

We could stop taking in new students, we could move to a slightly bigger place and be locked in for two years 

minimum, or we could go big for a nice facility.  Keeping in mind the primary goal had always been quality over 

quantity we did not want to be stuck with an expensive rent bill that required too many students.  We were 

not about to water down our program to get more people after the work we put into building it. 

 

With a bit of luck the answer presented itself at our current location.  While the price was four times more 

than our current rent, the space was generally a good deal.  It was a five year lease so it was still a big 

commitment.   

 

If we were going to do it, we were going to do it right. The new facility would have a full cage, bags, changing 

rooms, air conditioning, etc.  We also wanted some IT improvements so we added a check‐in system to track 

student attendance and started recording class material so students could review it online (that technique 

database is now over 800 moves).

The new location was hardly turn‐key.  We had about 20 students help us move from the old location.  The 

new place was painted purple and red, so Ryan Ayay spent a bunch of time repainting it.  What is now the 

smaller mat area had offices there, Ryder spent his nights demolishing walls and putting in what you see now 

(Ryder still had a full time construction job in 2010).  Kevin Barber and Tim Hendricks took out the old flooring 

and put in what you see today.  We had lots of help from others as well.  All told, it was at least 200 hours of 

work to set up what you see today.

As it turned out, our concept worked better than we had thought.  It took four years to get the first 100 

students and only one year to get the next 100.  Having a better facility made it more welcoming for women, 

who now had a locker room (there were none before).  As our diversity of age groups and gender expanded, 

others stopping by were more inclined to give it a try.  Of course, the classes stayed the same, just bigger. 

 

  

To manage the rapid growth Ryder started working part time at the school in June, and became the full time 

general manger by September. 

 This was also the year Alaska State Brazilian Ju‐Jitsu Federation (ASBJJF) was started.  While separate from 

ABJJ most of the work is done by ABJJ.  The goal was to create an easier way for Alaskan BJJ practitioners to 

get tournament experience.  It has been a big success with over 200 people competing at each event and 

representing many of schools in the state. 

 

This is the year we added a Kids BJJ Program. We wanted to offer a program for kids that mirrored our Adult 

BJJ Program; one that would grow our ranks from the ground up. On day one of our kids class we had a 

whopping 4 students (it was strangely similar to the first days of ABJJ) of those original 4 , we still have 3 who 

are now training in our adult classes and helping out in the kids classes.

This was the year we also expanded to the Mat Su valley.  Primal Martial Arts was looking for someone to rent 

space and offer BJJ/MMA; we worked out a deal, and the program was born.  Longtime ABJJ member Paul 

Sturgeon would take the roll as lead instructor when not working on the slope.  

 

 

2010 was also the year Todd and Justin were promoted to Black Belt by Professor Tinguinha.  

 

 

 

 

 

2011, continued growth 

The first year of the kids program was a very slow start.  The Kids Program only grew to 17 kids in one year.  

However, this is a path we were comfortable with.  By sticking with it the program now has over 100 kids in it.

 In October of 2011 we added Redemption MMA as our first affiliate.  Much like our path in the early days Isaac 

Kolesar was looking to take his group on the Kenai Peninsula to the next level.  ABJJ helped by providing Isaac 

with a road map. We helped Isaac to set up his school the same way ABJJ is set up as well as provide him and 

his students with access to our online library of training videos so they could follow the same curriculum our 

students are following. Redemption MMA now has over 100 students, many of which are active competitors in 

and out of state 

 

 

 

Also in October 2011, Dave Boyer was awarded the rank of Brown Belt. That year we were contacted by a 

former student, Kevin Fanning who had moved to Texas several years prior, he said his school, Furia Fight 

Training Center was looking to add a legitimate BJJ program to their system and they were hoping we could 

help them find someone. Dave took the opportunity and moved to Dickenson Texas to teach BJJ at Furia 

Training Center as an ABJJ Affiliate. Dave is still teaching BJJ there to a great group of adults and kids. Ryder 

paid the school a visit in June of 2015 for their first ABJJ Seminar and awarded Dave with his 4th stripe on his 

Brown Belt.

2012 

On January 1 Justin sold the business to Ryder and Christine.  Ryder and Christine were already handling many 

of the business issues and this was the remaining piece, it freed up Justin for the fun part of BJJ (training).

 20: BJJ Seminar 

 

Much of 2012 to the present has just been following the model we worked so hard to create…surround 

yourself with likeminded individuals and train hard, always keeping an open eye for ways to improve our 

teaching/training methods. We have become more than a Team we are an army…ABJJ ARMY! 

 

2013 

 In April of 2013 ABJJ was fortunate enough to have Kru Frank “Lown Wolf” Bamford join the ABJJ ARMY 

Coaching staff. Frank is a Certified Kru under The Muay Thai International Association he is one of the very few 

Kru’s that are certified to give ranking through The Muay Thai International Association. With his help ABJJ is a 

recognized school under their association.  

 

  

November of 2013 ABJJ was fortunate enough to have USA Boxing Coach Norman Lopes Join our Family of 

Coaches and become our Boxing Coach.  Norman has worked with students of all ages and skill levels.  As a 

very knowledgeable USA boxing instructor, Norman is very precise in what it takes in building a well‐ rounded 

striker beginning with, discipline and respect which has been evident by several of his students; many of 

whom have had long and prosperous pro boxing careers.  Norman truly believes:  “We are gentlemen and 

ladies first, students second, & boxers third. 

 

 

2014 

ABJJ ARMY continues to grow and expand in new directions  

 21: Kids Boxing Class 

 

April of 2014 ABJJ added a Kids Boxing program run by Norman Lopes and Jeremiah Williams. We wanted to 

provide the same kind of classes for kids to be introduced to boxing in a safe and professional manner.

In October of 2014 the ABJJ ARMY added MMA Coach Matt Stout to the Family of Coaches! Matt Stout brings 

a wealth of coaching experience to the table and has been a terrific addition to the team. 

 

 

2015 

 January of 2015 The Family Continues To Grow! The ABJJ ARMY is proud to add Dreadnought BJJ in Lawton 

Oklahoma as an affiliate school run by Virgil “Glenn” Allen and Benjamin Nepveux. As a former student and 

active duty member of The United States Army, Glenn PCS’d from Joint Base Elmendorf/Richardson to Fort Sill 

Oklahoma. Since there was not a BJJ school near them, he had to drive 90 minutes each way to Oklahoma City 

to train; he came to us with the hopes of bringing a legitimate BJJ school to Lawton Oklahoma (Fort Sill). He 

and Benjamin opened the doors in mid January with only a handful of students, 8 months later they have 80 

students training hard and have already had to secure a larger facility.

 ABJJ ARMY by The Numbers Over the last ten years ABJJ has had more than 1600 paying students.  Of those more than 300 are still with us 

today.  During this time we have given 80 Blue Belts, 18 Purple Belts, 5 Brown Belts, and 4 Black Belt (by way 

of Tinguinha). 

 

From the very start we have always taken promotions very seriously.  Rank must be backed by standards to 

have any meaning or usefulness.  From our very first promotion and even now the instructors discuss 

promotions by committee every two months.  Since 2010 we use the computer system to tell us who has the 

minimum classes needed for the next stripe, and then the Black belts talk about qualitative issues.  

 

Looking at the data is interesting.  Of our 1600+ students 1310 were adults.  Of those 202 made it to the first 

stripe (15%).  The first stripe on a white belt is 100% attendance based; if you do 60 classes you get the stripe.  

Later stripes become more qualitative.  So 85% of people could not do 60 classes.  On one hand that is a pretty 

high dropout rate.  On the other hand just think what that say’s about the mental toughness of the 15% that 

stuck with it.  40% of those that made the first stripe on their white belt put in the roughly two years to get to 

blue belt.  Since these numbers include brand new students the true percentages are higher.  

 

The Next 10 Years As strange as it may sound we are not looking for the next big thing for the coming decade, our goal is to keep 

doing what we always have done.  We have several students on the Black Belt tract (Purple and Brown belts 

with good attendance) and we expect to see some of them get there in the coming years.  We have already 

seen some students that started in the Kids Program migrate to the Adult Program.  The day will come when a 

student who started with us as a kid will get their Black belt. 

  

The ABJJ ARMY is excited for the future of our sport and the continued growth of our family. We are proud to 

be a part of a much larger family, The TBJJ ARMY and we look forward to supporting both TBJJ and our 

affiliates as they continue to grow with us.

What is the most valuable resource?  The answer is time, you can’t buy more and when you spend it there is 

no way to get it back.  Thanks to all the students and training partners that have given us their time over the
