2013-14 QUICK FACTSSCOUTING THE BEAVERS f The Beavers enter this weekend with a 7-13-7 overall

record and sit in fifth place in the WCHA standings at 7-8-4 following Friday’s 3-0 loss.

f Bemidji was shut out for the first time this season and was the first time in 38 games BSU failed to score a goal in a game.

f BSU is 0-2-1 against Alaska this season and will look to gain its first win over the Nanooks since March 11, 1984, when both teams were in NCAA Division II.

f Cory Ward leads the attack with 22 points with a league-best 14 goals and eight assists while Markus Gerbrandt and Matt Prapavessis are both tied with 18 points apiece.

f Prapavessis, the league’s WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, is the league leader for scoring by defenseman.

CAHILL SHUTS OUT THE BEAVERS f Sean Cahill produced his first career shutout after making

27 saves in a 3-0 victory over Bemidji State. f More than half his saves came at point-blank range as he

improved to 2-2-1 on the year. f Jared Larson scored one goal and added an assist while

Cody Kunyk and Marcus Basara scored a shorthanded goal and empty net goal, respectively.

MORLEYS RUN WILD IN WIN AT NORTHERN f Tyler and Brandon Morley accounted for three of Alaska’s

four goals in Alaska’s 4-3 road win at Northern Michigan, earning it the second win ever at NMU.

f Tyler erased the Nanooks’ 2-0 deficit, lighting the lamp twice in a three minute span to tie it at 2-2.

f Twenty seconds following a goal by Jared Larson, Cody Kunyk fed a pass in the slot to Brandon, who fired a one-timer for the eventual game winner.

NANOOKS COME UP SHORT IN GOAL PARADE AT NMU f In game one of the series at NMU, Alaska found itself in a

two-goal deficit three times in the third period but always answered but its three third-period goals weren’t enough as Northern took game one 5-4.

f The second forward line of Brandon and Tyler Morley and Garrick Perry all scored for the Nanooks while Colton Parayko also lit the lamp.

f Cody Kunyk’s two assists moved him into 19th place all-time on the program’s scoring list with 115 points (50-65--115).

BASARA HELPS NANOOKS GET A POINT AT BGSU f Following a 3-0 defeat in game one of the series,

freshman Marcus Basara helped Alaska earn one point on the weekend, scoring the team’s lone goal 7:44 into the third period of game two.

f It was his ninth score of his rookie campaign and now leads the league in goals among freshman. He is also third in rookie scoring with 15 points.

BECK GETS WCHA WEEKLY NOD f Colton Beck turned in a five-point weekend for the second

time this season and was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts.

f He scored two goals and added three assists to go with a +2 plus/minus rating in Alaska’s split at home against Minnesota State.

f On Friday, he accumulated one goal and two assists in the final period to lead Alaska to the 4-2 win.

f The next night, he assisted on one power-play goal and later redirected the puck in on another power play to

complete his weekend. KUNYK REACHES 50-GOAL MARK

f Cody Kunyk reach the 50-goal mark for his career in Friday’s win over Minnesota State and moved up to 20th on the program’s all-time scoring list with 112 points (50-62--112).

f With Alaska leading 3-2 in the final minute, the Mavericks went with an extra attacker but Tyler Morley won the face-off for the Nanooks and Colton Beck fed the puck up ice to Kunyk.

f He tapped it in at 19:23 of the third, becoming the 18th member of the 100-point club with at least 50 goals.

ALASKA ENDS MSU’S WIN STREAK f Davis Jones made a career-high 37 saves and Tyler Morley

had his first three-point game with a career-best two goals and an assist as Alaska scored three times in the third to beat Minnesota State 4-2.

f Colton Beck and Cody Kunyk both had a huge third period as the senior duo both tallied one goal and two assists in the third period alone.

f Alaska extended its unbeaten streak to four games and snapped the Mavericks’ league-best seven-game win streak.

f MSU outshot Alaska 39-18 but Alaska made 28 blocks and went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

JONES HONORED AGAIN BY LEAGUE f Rookie Davis Jones garnered his second WCHA Rookie of

the Year Award on Dec. 17 after his stellar play between the pipes in Saturday’s win at Bemidji State.

f In his first start since Nov. 23, Jones made 25 stops and led the Nanooks to a perfect 8-for-8 on the penalty kill, which tied for the most successful PK’s without allowing a goal under head coach Dallas Ferguson.

f He improved his season record to 3-3-1 and ended Alaska’s 2013 with a 5-1 win on the road.

‘NOOKS ROLL TO FIRST ROAD WCHA VICTORY f Less than 24 hours removed from a 3-3 tie in game one,

Alaska came out storming in Saturday’s finale at Bemidji State, taking a 5-1 victory to claim its first conference road series victory as a member of the WCHA.

f Michael Quinn had a goal and an assist while Cody Kunyk tallied a pair of assists in the Nanooks’ first-ever win against the Beavers.

f Davis Jones evened his record to 3-3-1 after making 25 saves in the victory.

f Alaska scored twice in the opening 3:28 to go up 2-0 and scored thrice more on just eight shots in the second to take a four-goal road win - the largest margin of victory for head coach Dallas Ferguson in a road matchup.

WILD STALEMATE AT SANFORD f Alaska and Bemidji State skated to a 3-3 tie in game one of

the series but it took late heroics for BSU to earn the one point it got.

f Alaska took a 3-2 lead 8:48 into the third after Garrick Perry scored on a 3-on-0 break after a turnover.

f Matt Prapavessis answered as he tied the game at 18:20 of the third with the Beaver net empty on the opposite end of the ice.

f Alaska had five shots on goal and two power plays in OT but could not manufacture a goal to leave the game a tie.

DRAMATIC SPLIT IN ANCHORAGE f UAA scored the game-winning goal 9:35 into the third

period to take game one of the Alaska Airlines Governor’s

  • GAME 26 n BEMIDJI STATE RECORD n 10-11-4 (7-10-2 WCHA)

INSIDE THE POLLS Cup Friday at Sullivan Arena and it appeared the Seawolves would sweep the weekend but Alaska had other plans in store.

f UAA scored two goals 33 seconds apart to take a 4-2 lead but the ‘Nooks responded with a Marcus Basara goal 49 ticks later to cut it to 4-3.

f Cody Kunyk beat the entire UAA defense and goalie with an unreal move and dished it to Colton Beck who fired it in for the tie with 7:55 left.

f With 2:47 to go, Alaska completed the comeback with a Kunyk goal to lift the Nanooks to a 5-4 win and to tie the Governor’s Cup series at 1-1.

HUSKIES SWEEP ‘NOOKS WITH ONE-GOAL WINS f Michigan Tech found different ways to leave Alaska with a

weekend sweep - 3-2 and 2-1 victories against the Nanooks. f On Friday, MTU used three goals separated by 7:11 to earn its

first road win of the year - a 3-2 win against Alaska. f Alex Petan scored two goals and added an assist in the win

while Tyler Morley and Garrick Perry both notched scores for the Nanooks.

f The next night, the Huskies scored on the power play and later shorthanded and held off Alaska in the third for another one-goal victory.

f Tanner Kero scored the man-down tally and assisted on the power-play score.

f Alaska managed only three goals on the weekend despite outshooting MTU both nights.

    KUNYK JOINS 100-POINT CLUB

f Cody Kunyk became the newest member of Alaska Hockey’s 100-point club Friday night with his third period goal.

f Add in his two goals and one assist on Saturday, he now has 47 goals and 56 assists (103) in 123 career games.

f Kunyk becomes the 30th member of the program’s elite club, which includes head coach Dallas Ferguson (17-87--104).

ROAD SPLIT AT THE SOO f Alaska split in its first ever WCHA road weekend with a 4-1

loss and a 3-2 overtime win at then-No. 14 Lake Superior State.

f In Saturday’s win at LSSU, ending a four-year draught in Sault Ste. Marie, Joey Davies scored 2:41 into the extra period to lift Alaska to its first win at Lake State since Nov. 21, 2009.

f Cody Kunyk’s first-period goal moved him one point away from 100 career points and Tyler Morley added two helpers in the victory.

f John Keeney picked up the win in net for the Nanooks after

making 27 saves, including four in OT to up his season mark to 3-1-1.

ALASKA SCORES EARLY, FALLS 2-1 TO NMU f Tyler Morley scored just 1:49 into the first period but that

would be the only goal Alaska could muster as a pair of NMU goals in less than four minutes proved to be the difference in a 2-1 loss for the Nanooks.

f CJ Ludwig had a goal and an assist while Mathias Dahlstrom made 22 stops for the Wildcat victory.

NANOOKS WIN FIRST WCHA GAME f Five different scorers and a string of three straight goals

in the second period proved to be too much for Northern Michigan as Alaska won its first ever WCHA game 5-4.

f The Nanooks scored twice on 5-on-3 power plays and both Brandon Morley and Shawn Hochhausen notched the first goals of their respective careers.

f Jared Linnell led all Alaska skaters with two points on two assists, which was the North Pole native’s first two collegiate points.

f Leading 5-2 into the third, Northern struck twice, with a goal at 14:00 and at 17:56 but the Nanooks didn’t allow one shot in the final 1:06 when NMU went with an extra attacker and empty net.

THROWBACK WEEKEND ENDS WITH TIE f Alaska played from behind in game two against

Mercyhurst but despite a 2-0 deficit, the Nanooks rallied back and later tied the Lakers 3-3.

f Tyler Morley, Garrick Perry and Nolan Huysmans all scored for the Nanooks.

f Alaska’s first goal didn’t come until 15:11 into the second period but that score sparked a 3-0 run in 12:05 as Perry scored his third of the year at 4:13 of the third and Huysmans gave the Nanooks the lead, 3-2, at 7:16.

f MU came back with a power-play goal at 9:46 but neither John Keeney nor Jimmy Sarjeant would allow another score, resulting in a tie.

WHAT A COMEBACK AT THE PATTY f Alaska trailed 4-1 late in the second period, but four

unanswered goals gave way for a remarkable comeback, resulting in a 5-4 win over Mercyhurst at the Patty Ice Arena.

f Colton Beck had a short-handed goal and a power-play score while also assisting on two more, including Cody Kunyk’s game winner with 1:39 to play.

  • GAME 26 n BEMIDJI STATE RECORD n 10-11-4 (7-10-2 WCHA)

    2013-14 ALASKA NANOOKS HOCKEY

f Kunyk had one goal and two assists while Nolan Huysmans added a score and a helper.

f J.D. Peterson sparked the Nanooks with his first-career goal (and point) as he lit the lamp 17:19 into the second period. Alaska added three more in the final 20 minutes to improve to 3-1-1.

JONES TABBED WCHA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK f Davis Jones was rewarded for his strong play in his first

two collegiate games at the Brice Alaska Goal Rush as he was named WCHA Rookie of the Week on Oct. 22.

f He made 54 saves on 59 shots faced to go with a 2.32 goals against average and a .915 save percentage to produce a 1-0-1 record between the pipes.

NANOOKS TIE WMU, CLAIM BRICE IN SHOOTOUT f Alaska won its second straight Brice Alaska Goal Rush and

fourth all-time last Saturday with a 3-3 tie against Western Michigan and a 1-0 shootout victory following overtime.

f Davis Jones made 30 saves in the tie and stopped the Broncos on all three shootout attempts while Colton Parayko went top shelf for a goal in round three to give the Nanooks the Brice title.

f Cody Kunyk and Nolan Huysmans both scored one goal and added an assist each while Michael Quinn had two helpers.

f Western took a 3-2 lead with only 1:51 to play on a Shane Berschbach goal but Tyler Morley answered with the equalizer with only 1:09 to go force overtime.

KUNYK MVP, JONES & PERRY ALL-TOURNAMENT f Cody Kunyk’s two goals and one assist earned him the

Brice Alaska Goal Rush Most Valuable Player Award. Joining Kunyk on the All-Tournament Team were Davis Jones and Garrick Perry.

f Jones went 1-0-1 with 54 saves, a 2.32 goals against average and a .915 save percentage (54/59) and Perry had one goal and two assists during the tournament.

PERRY’S OT GOAL LIFTS ALASKA PAST DENVER f Garrick Perry imitated one of the best of all time, Bobby

Orr, when he fired a shot while completely air-born and parallel to the ice for the game winner with only 25.2 seconds left in overtime.

f He added an assist in the victory, which was the first for freshman Davis Jones, who made 24 saves in his collegiate debut.

f Trailing 2-0 late in the second, Marcus Basara put home a rebound with 13.9 seconds to go in the period and Cody Kunyk scored the game-tying goal 6:53 into the third stanza.

f Alaska first goal of the game ended DU goaltender’s scoreless streak at 159:47 to start the season and 193:49 dating back to last season.

WCHA DEFENSIVE HONOR FOR PARAYKO f Sophomore defenseman Colton Parayko was recognized

for a great first weekend individually as he was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15.

f A 2012 third-round draft choice by the St. Louis Blues, Parayko was named to the Kendall Hockey Classic All-Classic Team after leading the Nanooks with three points while earning a +3 plus/minus rating.

f He contributed a pair of assists and two shots on goal as the Nanooks successfully killed off all seven Falcon power-plays, including three five-minute majors, and added another helper Saturday against Quinnipiac.

SPLIT AT THE KENDALL f Alaska went 1-1-0 to open the season at the Kendall

Hockey Classic in Anchorage, cruising to a 6-1 win in the opener against Air Force before suffering a 4-1 setback the following day against then-No. 10/13 Quinnipiac.

f Cody Kunyk scored two goals and Jared Larson had a short-handed goal and one assist as Alaska shut down the Falcons.

f Defensively, the Nanooks successfully killed off all seven penalty kills, three of which were of the five-minute variety.

f A day later, despite tying 1-1 while 5-on-5, the Bobcats took full advantage of the power play, scoring three of their four goals on the man advantage.

f Sam Anas scored once and added two assists while Michael Garteig stopped 23 of 24 shots on goal by the Nanooks to pick up the win.

PARAYKO, KUNYK ON ALL-CLASSIC TEAM f Colton Parayko and Cody Kunyk were both recognized for

their on-ice efforts following the Kendall Hockey Classic. f Both were selected to the All-Classic Team after Parayko

led Alaska with three points, all on assists while Kunyk netted a pair of goals in the 6-1 win over Air Force.

f Both finished the opening weekend with a +3 plus/minus rating and were two of the five Nanooks to achieve that.

PREDICTIONS: MEDIA THIRD, COACHES FIFTH f The Nanooks were predicted to finish third in the

Bemidji Pioneer WCHA Preseason Media Poll while being selected fifth in the Mankato Free Press WCHA Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

f Both Cody Kunyk and Colton Parayko, a 2012 third round draft pick to St. Louis, were honorable mentions for the Preseason All-Conference teams by the media and 10 head coaches. BECK TO WEAR THE ‘C’ THIS SEASON

f Senior left wing Colton Beck was selected by the team to don the ‘C’ this year as the Langley, B.C., native will serve as Alaska’s captain for the 2013-14 campaign. Joining Beck in the leadership role are senior center Cody Kunyk, sophomore defenseman Colton Parayko and senior defenseman Michael Quinn.

f Beck, who was an assistant captain a year ago, finished last season as the third-leading scorer for the Nanooks with 11 goals and 10 assists in 35 games played. Alaska’s Central Collegiate Hockey Association Perani Cup point champion, Beck was second in power-play goals (3), game-winning scores (3) and short-handed tallies (1).

    ONE-OF-A-KIND LOCKER ROOM FACILITY

f If you’ve been to an NHL locker room, most don’t compare to what the Alaska Nanooks now have to call home.

f Four days prior to the ‘Nooks’ exhibition, the team saw their new locker room facility for the first time and the reactions by all were simply priceless.

f The borough funded the construction efforts which gave the Nanooks a new locker room, along with training and equipment rooms, a changing area, team lounge, coaches’ locker room and meeting space as well as a media room for watching film.

f In addition, Alaska’s visitors will be in a new locker room on the opposite end and there are two additional auxiliary locker rooms that the community of Fairbanks will be able to utilize when skating at the Carlson.
