Things are always busy here at ACCA, but we believe in making time to step back and reflect on the work we are doing with children and adults who experience disabilities and their families. We build reflection into how we work together as a team, how we work individually and how we work with children, adults and families. To us, reflection means asking questions before giving answers, taking a moment to pause and wonder, and remembering to look back before we step forward. We believe that through reflection we can work as partners with children, adults and families, work together as team, and make progress toward mutual goals. In this way, we create meaningful change in lives.

The ACCA staff and Board of Directors believe in the power of reflection, even when it means things take longer. We would like to thank the current and past dedicated Board members, staff, volunteers and supporters of ACCA who make it possible for us to work in a reflective way. We would also like to thank the families with whom we work for allowing us to partner with them on their journey. This year we are taking a moment to reflect back on the many successes of children, adults and families we have had the privilege to serve. Warm Regards,

ProgramsFACES Team (Fetal Alcohol Community Evaluation Services)The FACES Team provides FAS diagnosis to children ages 3 to 14 years from around the In-terior and Northern regions of Alaska. In addition to diagnosing FASD, we provide social opportunities, advocacy, training, and parent support. We see a great need for community supports for young adults transitioning into independent living.

Infant Learning Program (ILP)ILP provides evaluation and intervention services for children ages birth to 3 years who experience developmental delays and disabilities. Our program model emphasizes working as partners with families to support their child’s learning in everyday routines and activities in home and community settings. While this model is best practice in early intervention, it may not always be what families expect. This year we focused on ways to ensure our pro-gram is understanding and meeting families’ needs.

Early Childhood Mental Health (ECMH)The Early Childhood Mental Health Program is focused on supporting children ages birth to 5 who experience social/emotional concerns. This year we completed a three year State of Alaska grant focused on building capacity of mental health professionals in the Fairbanks community, teaching childcare providers to support children’s social/emotional well-being, and helping families of children who experience social/emotional concerns connect with community based supports.

Loan ClosetLoan Closet provides short term loan of adaptive medical equipment such as crutches and wheelchairs to people in our community. A refundable deposit and cleaning fee is required. Loan Closet focuses primarily on mobility related equipment to help individuals live a more independent life.

Speech ClinicSpeech Clinic provides Speech/Language Pathology services for adults. Speech Clinic is fo-cused on encouraging functional communication in daily living situations. Our model sup-ports individuals in meeting their own goals in life by helping them find strategies for man-aging and completing tasks.

One family who has actively participated in FACES parent support programs has a daughter who recently graduated from Job Corp. She earned her Personal Care Attendant and Food Handler certificates and is ready to have her own apartment. It is exciting to see the suc-cess of this young woman moving into adult life.

One family wasn’t sure if ACCA would be a good fit for them when their infant was first referred to ILP. They wondered whether a direct therapy approach would be more effec-tive. By listening to the family, letting go of our agenda and building trust based on family priorities, we eventually built a strong, supportive partnership with them. It was hard to say goodbye when this family transitioned from ILP to school district services at age 3, but the family is looking forward to this next chapter of their lives.

The extended family of one young child served through this project was having difficulty figuring out a way for all family members to spend time with the child. Various family mem-bers, Child Protection, the Pediatrician, and other providers each had their own opinion on what was best. The ECMH Program Social Worker was able to bring everyone together to hear the voice of the child in the situation, provide information about what young children need, and ensure that everyone’s voice was heard so that they could make a plan that met everyone’s needs.

Over the past year, one of our own employees gained a renewed appreciation for this pro-gram. As a result of a severe accident, she relied on equipment including a wheelchair and crutches to assist her while progressing through the many stages of healing. Having equip-ment available when needed has helped her feel confident in activities which connect her to nature and the outdoors, bringing her life closer to how it was before the accident.

One individual who has received ongoing support from Speech Clinic graduated last spring from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She recently moved to Juneau and started her first professional position. She sent a thank you to “the beautiful ACCA family for helping me get this far after one of the most traumatic events of my life!”
