AlarmManager on Paessler PRTG

About this howToThis document describes how to setup Paessler‘s PRTG for monitoring a Kentix AlarmManager with

connected MultiSensors and use the AlarmManager as SMS-Gateway for sending alarms to mobile phones.

1. AlarmManager from 02/2018 on 1.1. Initial Setup - Download, install and configure the PRTG-Software.

- Download the Kentix MIB files archive from the Kentix Website for devices from 02/2018 on.

- Open the PRTG MIB-Importer and load the kentix devices.mib.

- Import the MIB with the help of the Importer into the snmplibs folder.

- Start and login to the PRTG Network Monitor.

- Activate SNMP at Setup | System Administration | SNMP on the AlarmManager Webinterface.

1.2. Adding AlarmManager - In the main menu select Add group and create a new group e.g. „Server room Monitoring“.

- Open main menu again and select Add device.

- Select a group and continue.

- Enter a name for the AlarmManager and select a suitable icon. Enter the IP-adress of the AlarmManager and continue.

1.3. Adding sensors to the AlarmManger - Open Devices in the main menu and select Group View.

- Click Add Sensor next to your added AlarmManager.

- Then check if the public and private communities in configuration of the PRTG-sensor are the same, as

in the SNMP configuration at the AlarmManager’s web interface.

- Select Custom Sensors and SNMP as filters and then click on SNMP Library Branch left.

- Select the library-file Kampro.oidlib and press OK.

- A list of all possible sensors/values will be displayed. Select all single sensors you want to add to the

AlarmManager for monitoring. Scroll down for more sensors, servers or I/O-ports.

The numbers in the category row shows the global index of a sensor. The global index of a sensor can

be found in the AlarmManager’s web interface. To access the index, select the gear-icon of the device in

the AlarmManager Dashboard and click on „Edit“.

- After a short moment (default poll-time is set to 60 seconds) the added sensor will update its value.

1.4. Configuring notification via AlarmManager’s SMS Gateway - Go to the AlarmManger’s Web Interface at Configuration | GSM and activate the GSM with PIN and the

SMS-Gateway with a password. Then restart the AlarmManager.

- In the PRTG main menu select Setup | System Administration | Notification Delivery.

- Scroll down to SMS Delivery Section.

- As Configuration Mode select „Enter a custom URL for a provider not listed“.

- Enter a custom URL in the following format:

https://AlarmManager-IP/php/sms_gateway.php?

key=password&recipients=%SMSNUMBER&message=%SMSTEXT

• Replace AlarmManager-IP by the AlarmManagers IP address.

• Replace password by the password you set in the SMS-Gateway Section on the AlarmManager

web interface.

Note: PRTG will replace %SMSNUMBER and %SMSTEXT automatically.

- In the Maximum Length of Text field, enter zero (0) to not limit the length of text messages (the

AlarmManager will limit the message to 320 characters), or enter another value, so PRTG will cut off text

messages before they're forwarded (e.g. 160 to only send single text messages without concatenation,

discarding the remaining characters).

- Save your settings.

- In the main menu select Setup | Account Settings | Notifications. Click on Add new notification:

• Activate the Send SMS/Pager Message section.

• In the Recipient Number field, enter the number the SMS text message will be sent to.

• Do not enter the number with a leading plus sign, but enter it either in local format without country

designation, or use an international format without plus sign (e.g. with leading 0049 for germany).

PRTG works with several placeholders which can be used in the message field. A list of

placeholders can be found in the Paessler knowledge base.

• Press save to submit all settings.

- You can test your notification by opening Notifications under Setup | Accounts Settings. Find your

new notification and click the Test button.

PRTG will send an http call to the AlarmManager containing the text / placeholders entered in the

message field.

You can check a successful sending in the PRTG Log Menu and also in the AlarmManagers Log file list.

1.5. Activating SMS sending for a sensor value alarm - In the main menu select Sensors | All and click on the sensor for temperature monitoring.

- Open the Notifications tab, enter a maximum temperature for the alarming and set a minimum time how

long this value has to be exceeded to send a notification. Choose the notification type on the right and

press save.

- Test your notification by setting the maximum temperature below room temperature. You can check the

send state of your notification in the PRTG Log and also the logbook of the Kentix AlarmManager.

2. AlarmManager until 01/2018 2.1. Initial Setup - Download, install and configure the PRTG-Software.

- Download the Kentix MIB files archive from the Kentix Website for devices until 01/2018.- Take the file kampro.oidlib of this archive and copy it into the snmplibs folder of the PRTG install

directory.

- Start and login to the PRTG Network Monitor.

2.2. Adding AlarmManager - In the main menu select Add group and create a new group e.g. „Server room Monitoring“.

- Open main menu again and select Add device.

- Select the created group „Server room Monitoring“ and continue.

- Enter a name for the AlarmManager and select a suitable icon. Enter the Ip-adress of the AlarmManager and continue.

2.3. Adding sensors to the AlarmManger - Open Devices in the main menu and select Group View.

For a first test select temperature02 from multisensor02 and continue.

NOTE! Depending on your AlarmManager configuration the first MultiSensor is used by the

AlarmManager itself. You will not receive any values for temperature, humidity, dewpoint or carbon

monixide.

� 2.4. Configuring notification via AlarmManager’s SMS Gateway - In the main menu select Setup | System Administration | Notification Delivery.

• Replace AlarmManager-IP by the AlarmManagers IP address.

• Replace myUser by a username configured in the AlarmManager.

• Replace myPassword by the password for your AlarmManager web interface. The user needs a

configured Web User Password to be able to send SMS.

NOTE: PRTG will replace %SMSNUMBER and %SMSTEXT automatically.

2.5. Activating SMS sending for a sensor value alarm - In the main menu select Sensors | All and click on the sensor for temperature monitoring.

- Open the Notifications tab, enter a maximum temperature value for the alarming and set a minimum
