Hello 2016! I hope you and your families had a wonderful holiday season. First of all, I’d like to take this opportunity to express a deep gratitude to our membership, on behalf of myself and our ABYC staff, for their kind and generous contributions to this year’s

staff Christmas Fund. It has helped give our staff and their families a very merry and brightChristmas, and is very much appreciated. I’d like also like to take this time to thank our hard-working staff for another successful year. Your efforts of going “above and beyond” do not gowithout recognition and is one of the reasons why ABYC is still “The Place to Be”. I always hearso many compliments about our staff and I hope that the staff knows how much they areappreciated every day of the year. Thank you everyone!

Looking forward….January is now upon us and we are entering our club’s “slow” season. As such, we will befalling into our Winter hours in the Galley. With the exception of Regatta days, the club Galley will be open from 11am to2pm on Saturdays and Sundays, with a limited menu available. Not to worry though, if you still need a beer, soda, or maybesomething for your sweet tooth, before or after the Galley is open, please come to the front office (during office hours) andwe will be happy to assist you. Also, please don’t let the “limited menu” scare you away. We will be taking this slow time tosample a variety of different additions to our menu, such as egg rolls and chicken tenders, along with weekly specials. Soplease come down and support our Galley this Winter, we look forward to seeing you!

Here’s to a fabulous new year here at ABYC!Tori

It seems as though The Turkey Day regatta was just yesterday! So much has happened sincethen it is hard to believe! The tree trimming party was wonderful, lights were lit and decorations were hung and the

napkins were wrapped in anticipation of the party to come. Robin Townsend and her band ofmerry elves clattered on the bay barge stapling and gluing tell what should appeared but anigloo and polar bear ready to take flight in this year’s Naples boat parade. The following day theSocial committee once again hit it out of the ball park. The decorations were beautiful, the foodwas delicious and Saint Nick made his appearance for the traditional family photo shoot. OnChristmas Eve

you should have received by email agreeting from me in the tradition of theholiday. The 26th, also known as Boxing Daywas the reason for 61 plus boat to comeout and play! The redone new small hoistwas christened with Champagne asmembers toasted. New Year’s Eve foundour club having a grand old time ABYCparty! Pot luck, a member raft-up, games(Sailor Little plays a mean game ofBackgammon by the way), and kids of allages. It reminded me of the parties thatwere held when I was a little kid at the club. Thanks to Pat McCormick, the Robinsonsand the Bells for their hard work planningthis event.

Now to a bit of business, there iscurrently about a 3 year waiting list to get astorage space in the small boat area of the yard. As I walk around, I notice that there are many boats that appear to nothave touched the water in quite some time. In fact, in looking at some it think they have developed some sort of scienceexperiment in their cockpits. Have sold a few of my boats over the years in know that every time I have felt that I was sellinga part of my family, we do get attached to those things. Please think about saving yourself a bit of expense each month aswell as letting a member how is actively sailing have the convenience that you had when you were sailing all the time. I amsure that if you get the itch to spend a day on the water a fellow member would be happy to lend you their boat for a day,I know I would, after all it is the ABYC family thing to do!

May the New Year bring fair winds and seas to you and yours,Latham Bell

Boatyard Yard Rules Since re-paving the boatyard and parking area, implementing the new rule mandating the yellow disk wheel-chocks and vigilance by the office staff, the yard looks good with minimalamounts of rubbish and just a few spaces with Yard Rule violations. Beginning a new year,

we ask all boat owners, whether on a Sabot/Opti/Laser rack or dry storage mooring, to checkyour boat and space. Please check to see trailer and dolly tires are properly inflated, ensureboat covers are secure in preparation for an expected wet winter and see that no boxes, laddersor other equipment is on the pavement or intruding on a neighboring space. Please also note theYard rules state that, boats, trailers and covers must be in good state of repair and in operable

condition. Our boatyard is an important asset and much in demand for both new and prospective members. As of this writing,

we have a list of 38 members waiting for a spot to store their boat in the dinghy yard. If for any reason you find you are notusing your boat as often as you have in the past, please consider utilizing our Dense Pack Option. You will still have accessto your boat and at the same time open a space for another member to enjoy the benefit of easy access to our launchingfacilities.

Your Board of Directors is acutely aware of the demand for more boat storage in the yard and is considering anyand all options to grow membership and encourage our racing fleets to flourish.

Buildings and FacilitiesIf you are looking for the Pedestrian Gate inside release button, it has been or will be moved, again, but this time to

a safer spot on the left-hand side of the gate away from the Automobile Gate.Tori and staff sought bids, screened locksmiths and have re-keyed and repaired the doors in the clubhouse. This

will be a great benefit to the staff, not having to search for the right key. This will also benefit our security by cutting down thenumber of keys in circulation and rendering any keys that were never returned, useless. If you have been issued a key to

A big thank you to Martyn Bookwalter for designing and building the new bay marks; they look great. Martyn also reconditioned several of the existing marks too.

Many of the new and reconditioned marks have already beendeployed in the bay with thanks to Chuck Hardin for drivingthe buoy tender. The new marks were all in place and readyfor a most creative Boxing Day Regatta.

In preparation for a busy year of regattas, we will beconducting a couple of trainings. First, coming up in January, Mark Townsend, will be conducting a regatta computerscoring training session on January 24,2016. Thank you to those of you havesigned-up or expressed interest inattending the training. More details will be sent out a couple weeks prior to thetraining. We would like to get a few more volunteers added to the training. Please email me if you’re interested ([email protected]).

In February, we will be holdingWhaler refresher/orientation training, which will include topics such as anoverview of race management, properuse of race management equipment, towing, proper use of signals, radioprotocol, boat handling and more. Please email me if you would like more

information. Finally, I wanted to thank the juniors and junior parents who worked on

reconditioning trailers and cleaning up the junior program Whalers on the 20th,great job.

Opti SailingOne weekend I was sailing in a regatta in Ventura. Have you ever sailed aboat? It is exciting but scary sometimes to be an Opti Green Fleeter. On my first day at that regatta, the wind was at 2 knots. We sailed 3 races

throughout the day. The 1st race was good, the 2nd race was okay, and the 3rd race wasso slow that a coach boat spun circles around the other sailors and me. Why, you ask?

Because in the rule book itsays you can pull in your sailon a wave and then let it outso it pushes your boat forward like surfing. So, later that nightwe had a pool party at the hotel, went into the Jacuzzi, hadpizza, and played tennis. Both champ and green fleets werethere.

The next day they said it was going to rain and get to20-25 knots, which is about 26mph at 3:00 in the bay at VenturaYacht Club. So we went out at 11:00 and it was perfect, everybody got to the starting line. We sailed a small race.

Then all of a sudden, there were dark clouds. It hit thechamps first with 25-30 knot wind. Some of my friends were inchamp. It was 11:10 when the strong winds hit everybody else

in the bay, and we were all happy at first for so much wind. But then it got scary. The rain started and the wind was blowing! The committee postponed the next race and helped boats

to the dock. I was the last person and was barely able to sail closeto the dock. Just then I tilted and a wave hit my boat and I capsized. While I was in the water it was so cold I could barely breathe. Thereis a board in my boat called a center board. A bungee cord holds itin place, and I pushed it down so my boat could flip over.

Then, a coach boat pulled up and it towed me to the docktoo. It was windy so I was cold and wet, so I asked them if I could gointo the coach boat. They said yes. I got in the boat and the coachestowed boats back. When I got there my boat was tied to the dock. Iran to check in so they knew I was there and safe. I de-rigged myboat and got my medal.

I liked that weekend. It was my first time sailing/racing in astorm. It was really cool. It was very different from when I had sailedmy first regatta there back in the summer. I love sailing, it makes mefeel free and like I can do anything. Can’t wait for my next regatta!

by Nicholas Sanchez

Ventura Opti RegattaMy very first away Regatta in my new Opti was at Ventura Yacht Club. It was a great weekend. On the way there

I was so excited to see the hotel, my buddies and check out the bay.The first race I was really getting up there in the fleet. I got 4th place. On the second race I was really excited and

I got third out of 50 boats. But then the wind slowed down and I gotthird to last. I knew that race was most likely going to be thrown outso I didn’t get too bummed out.

I think I did really well because I stayed very focused and gotsome pretty good starts. It helped thinking that I was going to winand then I got right up there in the fleet. I got some bad starts too butI still found a spot on the line where there weren’t many boats. Itturned out to be a good place because all the crowded spots wereright behind me. When I got to the first mark the people behind mewere calling room at the mark and they all crashed. A whole bunchof sailors had to do 360s but I didn’t. Lucky for me!

It is really fun rigging up with all of my friends. If I didn’t have myfriends beside me I don’t think I would’ve done as well in the races.

Sailing wouldn’t be as fun without them. After the first day we had a huge pool party. Me and my friends had Go Pros andwe jumped and played with them in the pool.

The second day there was a huge storm of wind and a little sprinkle ofrain. It was really hard to get through the course in the crazy amount of wind. Itwas blowing 27 knots! If I let my sail fill with wind I would just tip over and capsize. Ifelt a little scared but when I got used to it I changed my mind and started thinkingit was SO fun with lots and lots of wind.

I like the Opti a lot because they turn very sharply they go a lot faster inheavy winds than my sabot. Another cool thing about Optis is they can handle bigwaves in the ocean. I am looking forward to one day racing in the ocean with myfriends. Maybe next time. For now I am getting ready for my next regatta at CabrilloBeach Yacht Club.

On Saturday, December nineteenth, I sailed in the third SoCal at Del Rey Yacht Club. DRYC is in Marina Del Rey.The SoCal series, a high school sailing event, is made up of five regattas. I learned a lot and had great timesailing with Trent Turigliatto. At first, the breeze was oscillating and inconsistent. Then, once the racing began,

the breeze started to fill in and was consistent. The wind continued to build throughout the day peaking at about tenknots with some gusts reaching twenty; many boats capsized. It was sunny and cold, but turned out to be a beautifulday! We sailed eight races, winning the third one. Since SoCals are a part of high school sailing, they have two divisionsin the racing, gold and silver. Trent and I sailed in gold, and after a tough day of racing, we got third!

The only thing better than seeing a new person react to visiting our Club for the first time is seeing someone whoexperiences sailing for the first time while being there! This was the result of a recent Open House for High SchoolSailing conducted by Allie Blecher, our Jr. Sailing Program Director. Allie orchestrated Wilson High School Sailors

with classmates experiencing their first time sailing with hopes of engaging them to continue with the sport and bolster thecrew ranks of the school. The Galley and a no host impromptu BBQ fed 15 sailors and interested people on a beautifulAutumn day. Just ABYC doing some of what it does best.

The following day enjoyed several adults and juniors gather to work on the newly acquired combination Opti,Sabot, Laser Trailer and also render some TLC on the FJ fleet. Another productive day with supportive parents.

Our Jr. Fund list of Contributors continues to gain numbers. The following people are from December’s run and Iwould personally like to thank each and everyone here. [Especially Marc Schryer who was especially generous.] The totalamount that was received surpassed $400 and the Juniors of our Club THANK YOU! Let’s try to reach $600 next month. All that it takes is a little bit from everyone and we will get there.

Have a wonderful new year and we genuinely hope that you and yours had a joyous holiday season! All the best…Steve Bloemeke

ABYC Junior member and accomplished Laser Radial racer, D’amy Steward was recently recognized by theorganization, SAILORS FOR THE SEA© for her efforts to bring attention to pollution of our oceans. D’amy was featured inthis article by Hilary Kotoun, Social Impact Director, SAILORS FOR THE SEA:D’amy Steward: Junior Sailor, Outstanding Champion for Ocean Health

At the age of 15, D’amy Steward set out on the adventure of a lifetime. She sailed from Sausalito, California,

aboard the research vessel SSV Robert C. Seamans with the Sea EducationAssociation (SEA). For seventeen days and nights, D’amy and the crew conductednet tows over the side and with every tow they found plastic debris. When she gotback to shore, she continued her studies at the University of Southern CaliforniaWrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island, California.

D’amy was furious about the amount of plastic she found in the ocean anddecided to do something about it. When she found out about Sailors for the Sea— she contacted us with a bold vision of how she could become an ambassadorfor the organization. “The experience aboard the research vessel crystallized myfuture. I want to help solve the issues related to our oceans and educate peopleabout the importance of taking care of our oceans.”– D’amy Steward.Roll Tacks & Research

D’amy recognized that her travel as a junior sailor to over twenty regattasa year made her the perfect person to share the mission of Sailors for the Sea.Armed with her hands-on experience with plastic pollution, D’amy went to workasking every regatta organizer if she could speak at their events about marinedebris in the ocean and how sailors can work together to stop this problem. Standingup in front of peers can be unnerving, let alone facing the people one competesagainst on the racecourse, but D’amy knew it was necessary to do so for ocean

health. In her time as our West Coast ambassador, D’amy

has spoken at multiple National Championships, workedwith dozens of yacht clubs to run their events as CleanRegattas, and taught middle school students about whatplastic pollution is and how they can help stop theproblem. In one of her ever-optimistic reports back toSailors for the Sea, D’amy noted, “Never under estimatethe difference one sailor can make. Please help spreadthe word!” We may not be able to count the pieces ofplastic D’amy has prevented from entering the ocean, but we can feel the boundless energy she brings to therace to restore ocean health.Passing the Torch

With her senior year of high school upon her, college tours and applications are taking up much of herspare time. However, D’amy is not about to retire herpost as West Coast Ambassador. Instead, she’s createda way for others to get involved by developing a manual

detailing her efforts as an ambassador, along with sharing her presentations and lessons learned so that other juniorsailors can replicate what she has done. “D’amy literally wrote the book on how junior sailors around the world can helpprotect the ocean. She is a positive force in the world of ocean conservation and I can’t wait until the sailing world is filledwith ambassadors like D’amy!”– Tyson Bottenus, Sailors for the Sea Sustainability Director.

D’amy’s efforts have already had an effect at ABYC where our Junior Program Director, Allie Blecher has banneddisposable water bottles for the sailors in our junior and high school sailing programs. In this photo Allie is seen dispensingwater into re-useable water bottles for her sailors.

Congratulations D’amy for this recognition and thank you for your efforts in defense of our ocean environment.Boxing Day Regatta

On a sunny Saturday, the day after Christmas, a cool day which for us Southern California sailors is about as closeas we get to Frostbite Racing, we had a fun sailboat race on the Bay. Since Boxing Day is a reverse handicap race,Radials and Lasers started after several fleets including a good number of Cal 20’s and Lidos we would need to catch andpass if we wanted trophies. Radials had a three minute head start on the Lasers, so off we when in a light breeze. RaceOrganizers, Mark and Robin Townsend sent the fleets on a roundabout course around the fresh new race marks recentlyrefurbished by Martyn Bookwalter.

Chris Raab, a previous Boxing Day winner, took an early lead with me close behind for a little while, but soon Chriswas well ahead and would place ninth overall in the fleet of 60 boats of various classes. The rest of us played cat andmouse with various boats on the course including Laser Fleet Captain, Jorge Suarez who chose to race his Snipe withBonnie DeMoss. Jorge’s Snipe started one minute ahead of the Lasers, and he was in the mix with some of us Lasersmost of the day. We raced for one and a half hours in wind that occasionally asked for hiking…great conditions. At the time

KEEL BOAT FLEET ON WATCH

Wow! Our Fleet may be getting a tad long in the tooth but one Thing they still know is how to throw agreat party. The reason the Christmas Party was such a success was the volunteers. Judy wasour splendid game director and prize provider, Mary was the liaison with Club Manager Tori, Sue

did a wonderful job decorating the tables, Joe ran the 50/50 lottery, John sold tickets, Bob notified everyoneby e-mail and Rhonda, although not a volunteer, was at the piano as she has been for many years. If I leftanyone off the above list, my apologies.

Our next Keel Boat Fleet meeting will be Friday, January 8. As per usual dinner from ABYC Fridaynight surprise. Short meeting, mostly social.

See you there, George

Year in ReviewAfter 50 plus years, the Cal 20 Class continues to sail on. Here are some of the highlights in 2015:Class website issues (we refresh the site, it crashes, it gets fixed, it gets hacked and deleted, and

just this week (thanks to Jib Kelly and Erin Rustigan), we have been able to resurface sections of thewebsite. We are about to ink a deal with a professional website builder to restore and update our website

data base. The goal is to have our new and reliable Cal 20 website up and running by February! Successful Class Championship at Tacoma Yacht Club and hosted by Fleet 8. Congrats to Ron Wood and Vann

Wilson on board #69 (Lickety Split) for the big win and special thanks to Fleet 8 for hosting a fun championship.Local fleet racing continues as the backbone of our Class. We look forward to ideas to help promote greater

participation (especially from current owners). We have seen great success with Shoreline YC in Long Beach and Fleet 8in Tacoma YC building up their fleets and we want to share the success stories with other fleets to build our Class.

Fun people sail Cal 20’s. We witnessed this first hand last evening at a fun and festive Fleet 1 Holiday Party hostedby Keith Ives and Tina Miller.

quiz #16rules answer

Rules: 18.2(a), 18.2(e), 28.1, 31, 64.1(a), Zone, OverlapThe zone is the area around a mark within a distance of three hull lengths of the boat nearer to it, in this case threelengths of Blue, the Naples Sabot. A boat is in the zone when any part of her hull is in the zone.Yellow is overlapped with Blue when her hull and equipment in normal position are ahead of the line abeam from the

aftermost point of the other boat’s hull and equipment in normal position. The overlap is established between Yellow’s spritand Blue’s rudder before Blue enters the zone at position 2.

Yellow has an inside overlap at the zone and Blue, the outside boat is required, under rule 18.2(a), to give Yellow, theinside boat, room. Blue attempts to give Yellow room as required by rule 18.2(a), but is unable to do so. Blue could notbe expected to anticipate that Yellow would establish an inside overlap so is not required to luff until the overlap is established, rule 18.2(e).

When Yellow hits the reach mark she breaks rule 31. Although Yellow touched the mark, she could not be expectedto anticipate that Blue could not give her room. When Yellow sails the wrong side of the reach mark she breaks rule 28.1.However, she could have returned and rounded the mark to port as required by rule 28.1. The fact that Blue forced her to thewrong side of the mark does not relieve Yellow of her obligation to sail the course. When she sails the wrong side of the reachmark she breaks rule 28.1.

Yellow is disqualified for breaking rule 28.1.Mark Townsend
