I wanted to make a few of points.

    1. All the promises the Sun Cal made were just pipe dreams. There was never adequate fundingfor those plans and Rec and Parks would never be able to maintain a sports park the size of theone that was in the Sun Cal Plans.

    2. Enterprise park is something that could happen in the near future. It is located near Encinal BoatLaunch. It is that triangular parcel that goes all the way to the Hornet. The southern border goes along thewater and the northern border is West Hornet Ave. Starting at the Boat Ramp, there is the Bay Trailalong the water which goes all the way to the carrier Hornet. Other features of Enterprise park is an

active Soccer field, two undeveloped fields,a neglected boat marina, a closed bowling alley, neglectedpicnic facilities, unused tennis court, an unused RV park and a car repair facility on that property. TheCity owns the boat marina.

    3. I also wanted to point out that there is a 22 acre park and open space waiting to be planned and thatthey could be very helpful in helping to plan this open serene nature park.

I am seeking re-election to the Alameda City Council to continue providing leadership on tough issues aswe navigate Alameda through difficult times yet maintain our quality of life, including the access andavailability of sports facilities for our youth. I have a proven track record of asking the tough questions atCity Hall on behalf of our taxpayers to insure every hard-earned tax dollar is spent wisely.

Moving forward, my priorities include (1) working with the community to secure adequate funding tosupport our schools, (2) preserving our public safety by maintaining our ambulance service, police andfire staffing; and (3) leveraging every tax dollar to create and preserve jobs through business retentionand recruitment. This will help provide an economic base to fund our schools, our public safety services, our parks, sports programs, housing opportunities and other public amenities.

I have a verifiable voting record of supporting youth sports in Alameda, including leveraging valuablefunds to partner with the schools and non-profits to build new facilities for our youth, such as the MiracleLeague and the Boys & Girls Club. I provide policy direction in bringing good business partners such asPerforce, Peets Coffee & Teas, and VF Outdoor. During the planning of Alameda Point, I encouraged thededication of parks, open space and a sports facility as part of the citys vision. We are examining a rangeof alternatives at Alameda Point and analyzing its corresponding impacts on the community andeconomy, particularly on traffic.

My family has been in Alameda since 1968 and have benefitted from our swimming, track & field and

soccer programs. I would be honored to earn your vote for re-election. Vote Lena Tam.

Youth sports are part of the foundation of most American communities. They are where many social skills

are learned and lifelong friendships are formed. Good sportsmanship, coordination, fair play, and simply

having fun are all valuable lessons we carry with us into adulthood. I grew up in New England, and in

addition to playing sports that many of the kids around here enjoy like little league, tennis, soccer and

lacrosse, I also had the chance to experiment and try different sports like crew, cross-country skiing and

    squash.

    Marilyn Ezzy Ashcroft

I am a strong proponent of Youth Sports in Alameda for many reasons. As First Lady Michele Obama has

emphasized, we need to keep kids moving to avoid childhood obesity and a host of related health

problems. Recreation and sports opportunities also help create a healthy community. Youth Sports help

kids build physical and mental abilities, teach cooperation and team-building skills, and contribute to a

    positive image and self-esteem.

My daughter, Claire, now a college sophomore, played soccer for 7 years on Steve Bitkers (award -

winning) Silver Cheetahs soccer team. It was a wonderful, positive experience for Claire and our whole

family, in part because Steve is a stellar coach and human being who was a great role model for the girls,

and also because of the camaraderie that developed among the families of the team members.

As a City Councilmember, I would be a strong advocate for Youth Sports in Alameda and would welcome

the involvement and input of the Alameda Youth Sports Coalition in decisions involving sports programs

    and facilities.

    Beverly Johnson

As your mayor, I have been a steadfast supporter of youth sports programs and the facilities needed tosupport those programs. Personally, I place a very high value on the very positive impact that sports andphysical activity has on not only youth, but every person in our community. I participated in sportsthrough high school as did my son. My daughter is very involved in sports at a highly competitivelevel. During the last eight years the following have been accomplished or planned to create and/orimprove sports facilities that benefit Alameda's youth:

Renovation of Washington, Franklin, McKinley, Littlejohn and Leydecker play areas

Replacement of the Recreation Building in Washington Park

Construction of Bayport Park, athletic filed and community building

Renovation of the Mulit Use Field at Alameda Point

In 1933, while advocating for transparency and openness in government, U.S. SupremeCourt Justice Louis D. Brandeis famously commented that "Sunlight was the bestdisinfectant." Fast-forward 77 years later, I couldn't agree more with this famousAmerican jurist. Folks, I am running because its time to break up the culture of secrecyat City Hall and to let the sun shine once again on operations of our local government.I am running, in large part, to fight efforts by some members of our City Council to thwartthe creation of a Sunshine Ordinance and meaningful campaign finance reform forAlameda. We just cannot allow those that would seek to derail these vital efforts besuccessful.

As an award-winning journalist who has covered California government for more thantwo decades, I want you to know that I have the skills and experience to ferret outwrongdoing or just plain wrong-headedness -- the latter of which we have seen a lot ofrecently at City Hall.

When I look at how Alameda has mishandled many of the major issues we haveconfronted in recent years, I've had to cringe. I certainly include the troubles f ine groupslike AYSC have encountered with ARPD staff (we need to require that Dale Lillard meetswith AYSC each and every month in a standing permanent meeting.)

But when you also consider the bungled redevelopment of Alameda Point (we've nowchewed through two sets of developers!) or the multimillion-dollar losses surroundingthe collapse of our city cable TV system or even the recent boneheaded and brazenlyunconstitutional decision to censor our recent Fourth of July Parade and I could stand itno more -- I had to throw my hat in the ring.

I believe sincerely that we can and must do better as a city. Win or lose, I realized that itwas time to step forward and offer my time and commitment to my fellow Alamedans. I

hope youll support me in this journey. For more information, check out my campaignwebsite at: www.mitchell4council.com

I would also be honored to have your vote on Nov. 2. Thanks!

Im a mother. I want to be on the City Council to continue the work that I have done for 8 yearson the school board. Just as I did, my son attends Alameda public schools. Like me, heparticipates in youth league sports, goes to Alameda Recreation and Parks afterschoolprograms, rides his bike and goes to the park. I want to be on the City Council because I wantto make sure that my son has access to the same schools, public services, and adult mentorsthat prepared me for success in college and graduate school, and for a career helping childrenand seniors.

During 8 years on the school board I have done many things to make Alameda a more livablecommunity. Four years ago we opened the first new school in Alameda in more than 15 yearsRuby Bridges Elementary School. That project that was successful because of the partnershipbetween the City and the School District, and the contributions from the Bayport developer. Imade sure that the school district retained our sports programs during the 2007 budget cuts, because I know how valuable team and individual sports are to youth self-esteem.

Alameda youth sports, Alameda Recreation and Parks facilities, and Alameda open space are

resources that must be protected and expanded. As a City Council member I will work closelywith my school district colleagues to develop policies and laws to support healthy businessesand healthy youth. I will also develop ways to encourage local businesses to support thefamilies in the neighborhoods where they do business.

We have the opportunity to develop Alameda Point in a green and environmentally sound wayand to open up the greenbelt as a beautiful park for community uses. My background in publichealth and public policy provides me with the experience and the connections to move Alamedaforward in these endeavors.

Protecting Alameda kids from bullying, violence, substance abuse, and predatory behavior willcontinue to be my priority if elected to the City Council. Families dont move here just becausethe schools are good they come to Alameda because they feel safe, they feel secure, and

Please write a brief statement for our audience. Address your view on the role of Youth Sportsin Alameda, personal involvement, and policy direction on sports fields, facilities and programs.

    Doug DeHaan

I commend your groups for coming together for a common cause and forming a united voice to express

your concerns of the destiny of youth program.

The City of Alameda must be directly and continuously involved to ensure that we are totally committed

to the needs of the Alameda sports community. We must find ways to make sure that the scarce

Recreation and Park Department (ARPD) budget (General Fund) is safeguarded from encroachment of

the ever-increasing Public Safety obligations. The ARPD is only seven percent of the General Fund

Budget. ARPD is an excellent means of delivering service to all segments (youth, adults and seniors) of

the community. ARPD must maximize our opportunity to generate additional funding beyond just

    increasing fees.

Im a product of youth sports in Alameda, which instills integrity and builds character. My children are

products of youth sports in Alameda, and I am proud to say my grandchildren are now involved in many

areas of youth sports in Alameda. I will work with you to make youth sports bigger and better than ever

in the city. One the rights of passage as an Alameda parent is the role we play in enhancing our

commitment to youth sports programs like: coaching teams, fund raising, events coordinator, team

sponsorships, president of a sport association, etc. My family and I have been deeply involved andcontinue to be involved in all of these aspects.

I was directly involved in formulating the needs and design of the Alameda Point Sports Complex The

I'm in this race to provide fresh leadership that focuses on getting results through good city andneighborhood planning, focusing first and foremost on getting Alameda Point going as a vibrantnew, mixed-use community. To that end, hiring a developer(s) and keeping them on track toredevelop Alameda Point as a vibrant mixed-use area is critical. We need to work with the privatesector and place Alameda Point onto the tax rolls, so as to reinvest future property taxes and fees to

world-class amenities, such as open space, public access waterfront paths with breathtaking views ofSan Francisco, and multi-sport recreational facilities for youths and all Alamedans. A reasonablenumber of housing is key, as this will generate the most property taxes (relative tocommercial/industrial) to pay for amenities, new landscaping and infrastructure, which also attract

quality industries that provide high-paying, career-track occupationsnot dead-end jobs.

I am an active consumer of recreational facilities in Alameda, especially the tennis courts in town.More importantly, having grown up in Alameda, I know first-hand the benefits of organizedrecreational activities for youths. Perhaps one major policy direction I would have is to make sure toprovide team practice and competition opportunities in the West End of town, and to specificallyencourage teams in the West End of town. While generally kids are able to get to any point in

Alameda to take part in organized sports, from spring softball to all-year soccer, for reasons relatedto socioeconomics, youths living in the West End between Appezzato Way and Pacific/Lincoln may

experience relative greater burdens with respect to accessing these opportunities. Thats why Isupport the Boys Club at Woodstock School.

Another policy direction I will pursue is to make sure Alamedans have priority access to fields forpractice and competition. While it is nice and welcome to accept funding from teams and leaguesfrom outside of Alameda, in the end, we need to take responsibility over our fields. While it is truethat finding the dollars to invest in field upkeep is difficult, my perspective is that we need to moveredevelopment of Alameda Point along so that, with each passing month and year, were comingcloser and closer to the reality of a world-class multi-sport recreational sports complex at Alameda

Point, which will require us to get Alameda Point onto the tax rolls since property taxes and feesgenerated via the private sector developer approach will generate money to achieve this. Simplyrenting out old military facilities as is will never bring us to this reality, since rents are below market(not even enough in the aggregate to keep Alameda Point fire station open).

2e What should residents and youth organizations pay in fees for facility

2g Do you support the current 45 hole configuration of the Chuck Corica

    golf course ?

Yes Yes Depends. Im goingto leave the configuration

    of the course to the

    experts. My concern is

that the golf course befiscally sustainable and

    that we maintain golf in

    Alameda for decades to

    come.

Yes. Council direction tocity management is to

    come back with a plan

    and agreement to deliver

    this.

2h Do you support a city adopt a field program which would allow

preferred access or lease of sports fields for non-profit organizations

that help fund field maintenance ?

Depends (support itwithin limits we should

    not in effect privatize

No Depends. I think thisis a great idea for

    Alameda non-profits, but

    this requires more

    thought assuming out of

    town non-profits choose

    to participate.

Depends. As long asresidents get first and full

    use.

2i Should the citys policy allow sports entities from outside the city to

outbid an Alameda youth sports organizations for the use of fields

No No No. This should not beabout money, but about

    who serves the greatest

    number of Alameda kids.

    No

2j Do you support a $20 tax per parcel to raise funds to maintain parks

    and sports facilities ?

No Yes Yes. I think we shouldat least explore the idea

to see if it is a viable

    option.

I would have to see the

    specifics so that voters

    know exactly how and

    where the funds would be

    spent.

2k The City of Alameda acquired land specifically for park use. Shouldcity policy allow sale or swap of that land to a developer ?

2b Will you support increasing the

    Depends. I

    support maximizingthe number of acres

    for planned recreation

    at the base, although

    the

    total acres for planned

    recreation may be

    more or less than 100

    depending on the

    Yes Depends. The

    former NAS offerswonderful

    opportunities to

    expand athletic

    opportunities for

    Alameda's youth,

    especially a chance to

    install a badly needed

    artificial turf field.

    However, there are

    many concerns about

    2e What should residents and

youth organizations pay in feesfor facility access/use (e.g.

rental fee for gym, field or

    picnic rental, golf green fee,

pool fee, etc.) as compared to

    visitors ? __ Far Less __ About

the Same __ Far More __

    Depends

Far Less I would need more

    information to answerthis question.

    Far Less Depends. Far less

is not the correctterminology. I think

    local residents should

    pay less than visitors

    and non-Alamedans,

but if they were to pay

    "far less," I would be

    concerned that

    facilities would not

    receive the level of

    funding they need.

    Far Less. The fees

    should be as low aspossible.

    Aboutthesameifnotl

    esswherepossible.

    Far Less. And fees

    should be regulatedby the Council.

2f The City and the AUSD are

both facing fiscal challenges.Do you support increased

    cooperation to maximize

    opportunities for sports fields

    and facilities in Alameda ?

Yes Yes. Absolutely ! Yes Yes Yes. During my

tenure as mayor, Ihave sucessfully lead

    the effort to

    strengthen our

    relationship and

    cooperation with the

    school district and to

    plan and implement

    joint projects.

    Yes.Ofcourse. Yes

2g Do you support the current 45

    hole configuration of the Chuck

    Corica golf course ?

Yes I would defer to theGolf Commission and

    community members

who are involved withthe golf course and

    the Alameda Junior

    Golf program to

    determine the

    appropriate

    configuration.

    Depends Whilemaintaining 45holes,

    improvement can be

    made to improve pace

    of play.

    Yes (Depends) Yes,Provided it is

    economically

    sustainable.

2h Do you support a city adopt a

    field program which would

    allow preferred access or lease

    of sports fields for non-profit

    organizations that help fund

    field maintenance ?

    Yes. I support a city

adopt a fieldprogram as long as

    the nonprofit

    organizations are

    local.

    Possibly, but again, I

    would need moreinformation to

    answer this question.

    Yes Yes No. Yes. Yes

2i Should the citys policy allow

    sports entities from outside

the city to outbid an Alameda

youth sports organizations forthe use of fields and facilities ?

No No, there should be apriority for use by

    local teams and clubs

No Depends. I thinkCity based SYOs

    should have

    scheduling preference

even if they bid lessthan outside-Alameda

    entities, but that other

    entities should have

    access to fields and

    facilities when they

    are otherwise unused.

    No. No No

2j Do you support a $20 tax per

parcel to raise funds tomaintain parks and sports

    facilities ?

    Depends. I

generally view parceltaxes as a funding

    source of last resort,

    and would prefer our

    parks and sports

    facilities be

    adequately

    maintained through

    responsible fiscal

    management. If a

    modest parcel tax is

    ultimately necessary

    to ensure our parks

    and sports facilitiesare adequately

    maintained, I would

    support it.

    I would need more

    information to answerthis question.

    Yes No. Unfortunately,

$20 is a lot of moneyto some families right

    now, whereas it's a

    pittance to others. To

    make it mandatory is

    unfair to Alameda's

    poorest residents,

    who need the support

    the most. A suggested

    donation based on a

    percentage of income,

    or on parcel size or

    property tax would be

    a way that peoplecould contribute

    voluntarily and feel

    better about getting

    involved and more

    connected to Alameda

    Youth Sports

    That would need to

be approved by thevoters. I would be

    willing to work with a

    group organized to

    explore that issue.

    Yes.And,Iwouldbe

    Yes

2k The City of Alameda acquired

    land specifically for park use.

Should city policy allow sale or

swap of that land to a

    developer ?

No I would need moreinformation to answer

    this question.

No No No. That is not apolicy issue. It

    iscoveredby our

    charter.
