Historian Says What?

- Danica

Hey Keyclubbers! Welcome to the new school year

and a new year filled with service. :) I spent a lot of

time planning and making this newsletter, so I re-

ally appreciate everyone who takes the time to read

it. In the past, historians have only been tasked to

create the end of the year scrapbook, but I thought

a newsletter would be a great way to be more active

in the club. And you should too! Send in articles,

pictures, go to events, and don‟t forget to have fun

while you‟re at it. :)

Words From Our Co-Presidents

Shirley Says…. Looking at where I am now three years ago, I would have never guessed that this club would become such a tremendous part of my life. It has shaped not only the person I have become, but the community that has greatly benefited from my time and efforts.

I first stumbled upon this club in my Freshman year when a friend suggested I join as a way to complete my hours. Curious, I decided to join for the sole purpose of fulfilling the community service requirement. Little did I know that at the end of the year, I would be elected to become a part of the club's official board. This leap from a being a 'normal' member to an 'authorized' officer provided me with not only the chance to better familiar-ize myself with the club's purpose and goals in improving the community, but to truly understand and experience its spirited energy in doing so.

From that point on, I continued to fur-ther expand my knowledge of the club, carry-ing out the objectives of this organization as I became Co-Vice President and presently, Co-President.

Throughout these past terrific years, Key Club has given me such wonderful opportuni-ties to reach out and make a positive impact to those all around. I am ever so glad to have be-come part of this club that I've grown to love like family.

Words From Our Co-Presidents

Scarlett Says….

- Scarlett Wu, Co-President

Hi everyone!! (: For those of you who don‟t know me, I‟m a 5 foot and ¾ inch (yes, the ¾ inch is important!) senior at AHS. I‟ve been in Key Club since my freshman year, and I‟ve really come to love the club for what it does and what it stands for, especially after going to events such as Fall Rally North and District Convention.

I started out as a shy freshman member wondering what I was going achieve in high school and now I‟ve become a more outgoing co-president with a strong sense of what I want to accomplish during my last year here at AHS: to make Key Club an enjoyable and fun club for eve-ryone! I truly hope that many of you will come to love this club as much as I do and will come to cherish this club as an ohana, or family.

PLEASE do not hesitate to ask me any questions that you have about anything in the club or even just about school. (I‟m not going to bite…maybe.) I may be a Key Club president, but I‟m also a student just like you and I would love to help you out in any way I can.

Regional Training Conference

Reflection

Contributed by Danny Wong, Danica Liang

Sept 29-30, 2012

“After going through the workshops and

things at RTC, I realized that Key Club

is a Family and as a family we include

everyone in things that we do. We need

to tell them that they shouldn't be

ashamed to cheer because in a family

there is NO shame. Other Key Clubbers

won't judge you when you cheer. They'll

just be disappointed when you refuse or

don't cheer. “ - Danny Wong

Regional Training Conference

Reflection

“In RTC, we learned more about Key Club

through several workshops. We were also di-

vided into groups and met new people and

made skits. Because of the theme, „Surfing for

Service,‟ all of the names had something to do

with the internet. I was in Yelp! L-O-V-E, we

love Y-E-L-P! It was so much fun cheering with

everyone and seeing how big Key Club is. Alt-

hough I honestly could not remember any-

one‟s name, I met so many people. It was an

amazing experience and I‟m definitely going

to EMBRACE Key Club because I feel so

lucky to be apart of something big like this.”

OMCA Tie Dye

Workshop

“It looks like a disease,” said one of the adults jokingly as she held up her bandanna deco-rated with bright, lime green and yellow patterns. On August 9, three Keyclubbers, Melissa, Scar-lett, and I, volunteered at a tie dye workshop at the Oakland Museum of California.

We were instructed to help set up the tables and we learned various ways to fold cloth to create new, unique designs with tie dye. “The more rub-ber bands you put, the more intricate your design becomes,” said the volunteer coordinator.

When children and adults started arriving, we assisted them in the process. Many adults ex-pressed enthusiasm as the experience reminded many of them of their childhood. The children showed off their bandanas proudly.

All of us were also very excited and we want-ed to tie-dye more than one bandana. “Can we do another one?” Yip asked, with a grin.

“It was my first time tie-dying and I learned a lot,” said Wu. “It didn‟t even feel like communi-ty service because it was so fun.” Although it was a small event, it was clear that everyone had a lot of fun.

Eat Real Festival Sept 23, 2012

By Tina Chung

The Eat Real Festival was a real treat! It was on the 21st-23rd of September at Jack Lon-don Square. Many local restaurants, food ven-dors, and businesses sold their food and held demonstrations.

Alameda High School Key Clubbers went out on 23rd and helped out at this event. We worked behind the scenes to make sure that the event went smoothly and successfully. We moved items, broke boxes, and helped out with food demonstrations. We were also able to see the craziness and process of what happens dur-ing big events that the public does not see.

It was a tiring and long day, but overall, we had fun and had great memories. At the end of the day, the volunteers each received an Eat Real t-shirt and an Eat Real Festival goodie bag.
