Valencia, example of modernity, ancient Mediterranean port and host ofa number of important international events, becomes, from 15th to 19thMarch, a city fully devoted to the festive activities, music and fireworks ofits famous Fallas Festival. The Fallas, considered the world’s most importantfire festival, has managed to remain as spectacular, excessive and baroqueas the Valencian people themselves. As winter draws to a close, Valenciabecomes inundated with the aroma and sight of flowers and fireworks asit welcomes in a new spring and over a million visitors who, accompaniedby brass band music and the roar of the ‘mascleta’ firework displays, spendtheir time touring the numerous Falla monuments. This year’s Fallas festivalis expected to include over 700 of these spectacular monuments. Whilsthere, visitors should not miss a visit to other tourist sights such as theValencia Contemporary Art Museum (IVAM), the San Pio V Fine ArtsMuseum and the spectacular Valencia Arts and Science Centre. We wouldalso suggest they try, following the lunch time ‘mascleta’, one of Valencia’sdelicious ‘paella’ rice dishes.

l arte y la sátira se conjugan en unos monumentos que durante la semana fallerase levantan en cada una de las calles y esquinas de la ciudad y en los que se critica

y caricaturiza la vida social y política. Visitar la Exposición del Ninot, ir a ver a la “plantà”,participar en la Cabalgata del Reino, disfrutar de los castillos de fuegos artificiales y de lasmascletàs, de la Ofrenda de flores a la Virgen, de la Nit del Foc son algunas de las impres-cindibles citas falleras, junto con la “cremà”, apoteosis final de la fiesta.

Pero Valencia es mucho más que sus fiestas, es una ciudad de belleza evidente quecautiva por su propia anatomía y las Fallas son la excusa perfecta para conocerla. A travésdel viejo cauce del río Turia, un espacio verde que cruza de oeste a sur la ciudad, se puederecorrer de forma tranquila saliendo de vez en cuando para conocerla en plenas Fallas.

rt and satire come together in the extraordinary monuments erected during theFallas Festival. These monuments caricature and criticise different political and

social scenarios. Visiting the Ninot Exhibition, watching the monuments being installed,participating in the Cabalgata del Reino Parade and enjoying the ‘mascletas’ andmidnight firework displays, the Our Lady flower offerings and the Nit de Foc (Fireworknight) are just some of the events worth visiting together, of course, with the final actof burning the monuments known as the Crema.

Valencia, a city of outstanding beauty with an urban structure that will captivate itsvisitors, also has, as mentioned previously, a wide variety of other sights worth visiting.In fact, the Fallas Festival provides an excellent excuse for getting to know this uniqueMediterranean city. We would suggest visitors take a stroll along the dried up riverbedpark, the green lung running from the west to the south of the city, whilst taking anoccasional detour to admire the spectacular Fallas monuments along the way.

The Cabecera Park, home of a magnificent open-air zoo known as the ValenciaBioparc, marks the beginning of the Turia riverbed park area which finally ends atthe Valencia Arts and Science Centre, both famous for their magnificent vanguardarchitecture. The Arts and Science Centre, designed by the famous Spanish architect,Santiago Calatrava, is made up of the amazing Palau de les Arts (Performing ArtsTheatre), the Hemisferic (Imax Cinema) and the Museo de las Ciencias (ScienceMuseum) along with the Oceanografic (Aquarium) designed by Felix Candela, one ofthe city’s outstanding 21st century emblems.

Los jardines del Turia empiezan en el parque de Cabecera, que alberga un zoo deinmersión llamado Bioparc, y terminan en la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (CAC),ambos ejemplos de una arquitectura pública que revela que Valencia está abierta a lasúltimas tendencias. En CAC, obra de Santiago Calatrava está el Palau de les Arts, elHemisfèric y el Museo de las Ciencias, y es hoy junto al Oceanogràfic de Félix Candela,también en el antiguo Turia, el emblema de una de las múltiples caras de la urbe, la delsiglo XXI.

El final del cauce da acceso a la Valencia de alma marinera, donde el ligero olor a salitreque impregna la zona portuaria de construcciones modernistas contrasta con la vanguardiade unos edificios construidos merced a eventos internacionales como la America’s Cup yel Premio de Europa de Fórmula 1. Valencia se revela aquí como una ciudad de mar que haconjugado un mestizaje peculiar de personas, arquitectura y gastronomía.

Antiguos puentes como el de la Mar, el del Real, el de la Trinidad o el de Serranos yotros vanguardistas como el de la Exposición o el de l’Assut de l’or, que atraviesan el caucehay que mirarlos con detenimiento porque son un nexo en la historia de la ciudad, la másantigua y la más reciente.

Desde uno de los viejos puentes, el de la Trinidad, se puede abandonar el cauce paravisitar el Museo de Bellas Artes San Pío V, antiguo convento, donde resplandece la cúpula dela antigua iglesia rematada con azulejos vidriados y la colección de arte que alberga en suinterior. Cauce arriba pero al otro lado del río está el Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM),uno de los museos de arte moderno más importantes de España, que gracias a poseer, entreotras, la colección de Julio González trae a sus salas las últimas vanguardias mundiales.

Antes del IVAM, las Torres de Serrano, también en el margen derecho del río, eran unaentrada a la ciudad. Muy cerca, se puede visitar la Catedral y la Basílica, donde en Fallas laVirgen se viste de flores. También las Torres de Quart, otra de las puertas de entrada ala antigua ciudad, permiten el acceso el Barrio del Carmen, un zoco de tenderetes y tiendasa la última durante el día y centro de la diversión por la noche. El modernista mercadoCentral, paraíso de gastrónomos, contrasta con la Lonja de la Seda, único edificio civilgótico de la ciudad y que con la iglesia de los Santos Juanes ofrecen el contrapunto arqui-tectónico a la modernidad valenciana.

Lo cierto es que el atractivo de Valencia proviene de una amalgama de peculiaridades: desu inmediata hermosura y de sus contrastes, de su concordancia entre urbe y naturaleza,de la diferencia entre su perfecta luz mediterránea y sus sombras, entre su brisa salobre y elazahar y además permite, con un clima de perpetua primavera, disfrutar a la intemperie dela vida y de las Fallas.

Valencia’s famous dried up river bed runs all the way down to its outstanding portarea, home of a number of Modernist style buildings that contrast beautifully with thevanguard architecture of the buildings built to house impressive international eventssuch as the America’s Cup and the Formula I European Grand Prix. Valencia reallystands out here as a coastal city that provides a peculiar mixture of architecture,gastronomy and people.

Ancient bridges such as the Mar, Real, Trinidad and Serranos bridges and othervanguard bridges such as the Exposicion and l’Assut de l’or bridges to be foundcrossing the dried up riverbed stand out as a nexus between the city’s ancient andmodern history.

The ancient Trinidad Bridge provides, amongst other things, access to the San PioV Fine Arts Museum housed in an ancient convent famous for its glazed tile churchdome and magnificent collection of art. Up river, on the opposite side of the riverbed,visitors will find the Valencia Contemporary Art Museum (IVAM), considered one ofSpain’s most important contemporary art museums, thanks mainly to permanentcollections that include the famous Julio Gonzalez Art Collection and numeroustemporary vanguard exhibitions.

Visitors on their way to the IVAM should look out, on the same side of the river, forthe Torres de Serrano, one of Valencia’s ancient city gates which they will find are justa stroll away from the city Cathedral and Basilica where Valencia’s famous statueof the Virgin Mary is dressed in a mantle of carnations during the Fallas Festival.The Torres de Quart, Valencia’s other famous ancient city gate, can also be foundhere providing access to Valencia’s magnificent Carmen District with its narrowmedieval streets which visitors will find full of charming shops, bars and restaurants.We would mention that the Carmen District is one of Valencia’s most popular nightlifedistricts. Visitors will also find here the impressive Modernist style central market, agastronomist’s paradise, whose building contrasts magnificently with the ancient SilkExchange, Valencia’s only civil Gothic style building, and the Santos Juanes Church,each offering an architectural counterpoint to the city’s previously mentioned vanguardbuildings.

There is no doubt about it, the city of Valencia not only stands out for its startlingbeauty and contrasts, but also for its town and country atmosphere, marvellousMediterranean light and shadow, salty sea breeze and fragrant orange blossom, all setin a climate of perpetual spring, perfect for outdoor living and festivals such as itsunique Fallas Festival.

Esta nadadora cartagenera de 21 años perteneciente al Club Natación Áncoraha añadido recientemente a su palmarés la medalla de oro en la prueba de25 kilómetros en aguas abiertas ganada en los Campeonatos de Europacelebrados el pasado mes de septiembre en Dubrovnik (Croacia), siendo laprimera vez que recorría esa distancia y tras realizar un titánico esfuerzo queduró algo más de cinco horas y media, superando con medio minuto dediferencia a unas brillantes rivales que partían como favoritas.

This 21-year-old swimmer from Cartagena, member of the AncoraSwimming Club, has recently added a gold medal to her impressivesporting record by winning the 25 kilometre category of the EuropeanLong Distance Swimming Championships in September, 2008,in Dubrovnik (Croatia). It was the first time this young Spanishswimming champion had competed in this category. Following agruelling five-and-a-half hour spell in the water, Margarita managedto gain a 30-second lead and leave behind a number of brilliant rivals.

argarita Dominguez was, as a resultof her magnificent feat, awarded

the Spanish Royal Swimming FederationSpecial Sports Medal, the first time thismedal has been awarded to anybody fromthe town of Cartagena. Sportswoman ofthe Year in 2007 and Spanish 1,500 meterand 10 kilometre swimming champion in2008, Margarita has also won the 400and 800 meter championships. She has,to date, competed in 42 internationalchampionships and won 28 Spanishchampionship medals and 6 internationalchampionship medals.Her father, President of the MurciaRegional Swimming Federation, andher mother and trainer, former runner-up in the 100 meter butterfly and crawlcategories of the Spanish SwimmingChampionships, have instilled in theirdaughter a sense of responsibility,determination, perseverance and disciplineas well as providing her with an excellenttechnique, corroborating the popularsaying “de casta le viene al galgo” (likefather like son).

Where did your interest in swimmingcome from?From my parents. They are both swimmersand are able to combine their work asphysical education teachers with their lovefor this sport, my mother as a swimmingcoach and my father as President of theMurcia Regional Swimming Federation.How do you normally train? Is there abig difference between swimming in theopen sea and swimming in a swimmingpool?My training normally consists of a seriesof slow long distance swimming exercisesdesigned to improve resistance. In mycase, I carry out an increased number ofslower swimming series together with afew faster series just in case a sprint isneeded to win the race. As far as yoursecond question is concerned, there isnot really much difference between meand an 800 or 1,500 meter swimmingpool swimmer. What is the most difficult part ofswimming in the open sea?The worst part are the waves, I find themoverwhelming; I get the feeling that I amnot moving forward. 2008. La gala, celebrada en la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, tuvo como invitadosespeciales a Bernie Ecclestone, presidente de la Fórmula One Management, y a Vicente delBosque, seleccionador nacional de fútbol. El presidente de la Generalitat Valenciana,Francisco Camps, recogió uno de los Premios Anuario Oro por la llegada de la Fórmula 1a Valencia. También fueron galardonados en la tercera edición de los Premios Anuario Oro,el Valencia CF por la Copa del Rey conquistada en 2008; los cuatro valencianistascampeones de la Eurocopa 2008 con la selección española de fútbol, y Telefónica por suapoyo al deporte valenciano.

Esta obra editorial, dirigida por el periodista Pedro Morata, se creó en 1995 con elobjetivo de lograr una gran biblioteca del deporte valenciano. The Valencia Football Club was awarded a gold award for its 2008 King’s Cup victorywith four Valencian players being awarded a further award for their 2008 UEFA EuropeanFootball Championship victory. Finally, the Spanish telephone company, Telefonica, wasalso awarded a medal for its Valencian sport sponsorship activities.

The Valencian Sports Yearbook, edited by the Spanish journalist, Mr. Pedro Morata,was founded in 1995 with the aim of creating a Valencian sports archive. It is, at present,edited in three different formats: a book (3,000 copies), an interactive CD (100,000 units)and a web page (www.anuariodeldeportevalenciano). The Geneva Motor Show will also be seeing the comeback of an intriguing productidea during the presentation of the Mercedes-Benz Coupé range in the new E-Class. Thenew E-Class Coupé offers a very special combination of the two attributes for whichthe Mercedes brand is known: fascination and efficiency. With its classic Coupé sideaspect - no B-pillars and fully retractable side windows - the new two-door car is aparticularly sporty interpretation of the E-Class’s dynamic design. At the same time, themost aerodynamic variant of the Coupés achieves a new world best in terms of dragcoefficient. With a Cd-figure of just 0.24, this model is the world’s most aerodynamicallyefficient series-production car. The model programme includes two new 4-cylinderengines, which consume up to 17% less fuel whilst offering a significant increase inperformance and torque. The new E-Class Coupé will be in the showrooms at thebeginning of May, 2009. This new Coupé offers all the technical innovations of the newE-Class series that one might expect to find in a sports-orientated luxury Coupé. MOTORThe Geneva Motor Show has been chosen by Fiat to unveil the soft-topconvertible variant of its premium small car, the 500C that will subsequently belaunched in Europe this spring. Designed to provide excitement and sustaineddriving pleasure, this original cabriolet pays homage to the open-top 1957 model,whilst offering leading-edge solutions for mechanical installations, power-plantsand interior comfort. Featuring an innovative soft top - an unrestricted windowto the sky - the new 500C is exactly the same size as the basic model (3.55 mx 1.65 m x 1.49 m) and uses the same three power-plants; 1.3 litre 75 hp MultijetTurbodiesel coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission and the two 1.2 litre 69hp and 1.4 litre 100 hp petrol engines, available with either manual or robotisedDualogic transmission. Fiat will also be introducing the new Fiat Bravo. El nuevo Coupé de laClase E estará en los concesionarios europeos de Mercedes-Benz a comienzos de mayo.Este coupé ofrece todo el conjunto de innovaciones técnicas que se puede esperar deun deportivo de lujo, como son la suspensión adaptativa, la detección de somnolencia,PRE-SAFE, y el capó de seguridad activo. Especialmente desarrollado para este modelo esel denominado paquete dinámico, que modifica una serie de parámetros del conjunto delvehículo con sólo apretar un botón.

Por su parte BMW nos muestra en primicia su nuevo Concept Serie 5 Gran Turismo. Esun prototipo que adelanta ciertos aspectos del futuro BMW Serie 5 GT, la tercera variantede carrocería de la Serie 5, junto a la berlina y el familiar. La línea del BMW Concept Serie5 Gran Turismo es muy similar a la del X6, especialmente en el techo descendente, pero lacarrocería es más baja. El frontal es muy parecido al del Serie 7, salvo la parte baja delparagolpes y los faros antiniebla. El diseño del capó también es semejante al del Serie 7.

Porsche presenta en Europa su nuevo Panamera, un turismo de cinco puertas y concuatro plazas. Es la primera vez que la marca alemana ofrece un coche con una carroceríade este tipo. Estará a la venta desde el 12 de septiembre de 2009. Mide 4,97 m de longitud,1,93 m de anchura y 1,42 m de altura. Tiene cuatro asientos individuales de tipo deportivo.En el momento del lanzamiento, habrá tres versiones disponibles del Panamera: S, 4Sy Turbo. El 4S y el Turbo tienen tracción total, mientras que el S es sólo de tracción trasera.

Esta primavera ya se venderá en España un Passat que funciona con gas natural,denominado “TSI EcoFuel” con 150 CV de potencia. Saldrá con carrocerías de cuatropuertas o familiar (Variant), cambio manual de seis marchas o automático DSG de sietevelocidades. Consume muy poco y contamina menos, pero en España no hay puntosdonde poder repostarlo. De momento, tan sólo hay una estación donde los particularespueden llenar el depósito con gas natural, está en Valencia.

Audi muestra en Ginebra y pondrá a la venta antes de verano de 2009 el A5 y el S5 concarrocería descapotable. Ambos tienen espacio para cuatro ocupantes. El A5 y S5 Cabriopodrán tener muchos elementos de equipamiento interesantes, de confort y de seguridad,que recientemente han estrenado otros modelos de la marca.

Por su parte Citroën llega a Ginebra son sus nuevos DS INSIDE que enseñan el estiloque compartirá una nueva línea de coches de la marca francesa, compuesta inicialmentepor tres variantes: DS3, DS4 y DS5. No sustituirán a ningún modelo, sino que constituiránuna alternativa diferente, más lujosa, a la línea tradicional de Citroën.

La marca italiana Ferrari expone su nuevo Scuderia Spider 16M, una edición limitadadel F430 Spider, que es la versión descapotable del F430. Se fabricarán 499 unidades. Estárealizado sobre la versión descapotable del F430. Las principales modificaciones afectan almotor, que es más potente con 510 CV, y su peso, que es 80 kg. menor. También hayalgunos cambios en su aspecto y algún detalle de equipamiento particular.

BMW will be starring at the Geneva Motor Show with its new Concept 5-series GranTurismo, a series-based adaptation of the Progressive Activity Sedan in the upper mid-range segment and prototype, in a certain way, of the future BMW 5-series GT. Thefastback styling is reminiscent of the new BMW X6. The front end carries overtonesof the 7-series model except for the lower part of the bumper and fog lamps. Thedesign of the bonnet is also similar to the BMW 7-series. The BMW Concept 5 SeriesGran Turismo is designed for enjoyable long distance travel in supreme comfort.

Porsche, on the other hand, will be organising the European premiere of its newPanamera, a five-door, four-passenger vehicle. It is the first time that this Germanmanufacturer presents a car with this type of body design. It will be on sale as of 12thSeptember, 2009. The Panamera, with a length of 4.97 m, a width of 1.93 m and aheight of 1.42 m, has been fitted with four sporty individual passenger seats. It will,during the launch period, be available in three versions: the Porsche S, 4S and Turbomodels. The 4S and Turbo models will be available with four-wheel drive whilst theS model will only be available with rear-wheel drive.

A Passat car model using natural gas, denominated “TSI EcoFuel”, with a 150 hpengine, will be on sale in Spain this spring. This Passat will be available in a four-doorand family (Variant) version with a 6-speed manual transmission or automatic DSG 7-speed transmission. It consumes very little and contaminates even less. Unfortunately,Spain does not have gas deposits where this car model can refuel. At present, thereis only one place that private owners can refuel and that is in Valencia.

Audi will be presenting its Audi A5 and S5 convertible models at the coming GenevaCar Show. These will be on sale before summer, 2009. The four-passenger A5 and S5Cabrio models offer a wide variety of interesting equipment, based on comfort andsafety, that has recently been introduced in a number of other models.

In the meantime, Citroën will be presenting its new DS Inside car models. Thisfamous French car manufacturer’s new range of cars will, to begin with, comprise threevariants: the Citroën DS3, DS4 and DS5. This new range of cars does not substituteexisting car models; it actually constitutes a more luxury-orientated alternative toCitroën’s traditional range of car models.

The famous Italian car manufacturer, Ferrari, will be introducing its new Spider 16M,a limited edition of the F430 Spider, a convertible version of the F430. A total of 499 unitsof this convertible model styled on the convertible version of the F430. The mainmodifications include a more powerful engine offering 510 hp and an 80 kilo reductionin its total weight. A number of changes in its aspect and equipment have also been made.

occidental, que ha propiciado que desde los albores de los tiempos diferentes puebloshayan codiciado la isla como puerto de escala y refugio. Unos y otros dejaron un ricolegado histórico en la isla, que hace del más oriental de los territorios de las Baleares unatierra con un relevante patrimonio. Es por ello que historiadores y arqueólogos han consi-derado que Menorca constituye un auténtico museo al aire libre: tanto su prehistoria comosu historia son tan intensas que parecen impropias de un territorio de tan reducidasdimensiones.

Menorca cuenta con más de un millar de monumentos megalíticos clasificados. Losprimeros vestigios datan del 3000 a. C. Mil años después, era el lugar de paso hacia lapenínsula y estaba habitada por cazadores y recolectores de frutas. Transcurrida la Edad deBronce, denominado periodo pretalayótico, fenicios, griegos y cartagineses frecuentaronlos puertos menorquines entre los años 1400 y 300 a. C.

La aparición de los primeros “talayots” (grandes torres con funciones de vigilancia)marca el máximo esplendor de la cultura megalítica. En la misma época aparecen las“navetas”, cuyo nombre se debe al parecido a una nave invertida, y que fueron en primerlugar utilizadas como habitáculo y después como lugar de enterramiento. Aún así, el lugarmás característico y peculiar, sin duda, es la “taula”, compuesta por dos enormes piedrascolocadas en forma de “T”. Unos piensan que eran altares donde se ofrecían sacrificios ola pilastra central de un edificio, otros que servían para celebrar ritos de culto solar.Seguramente, nunca se podrá aclarar con certeza el origen de tan enigmáticas figuras.

Para descubrir la magia de Menorca, destacan los poblados talayóticos de Torre d’enGalmés (situado encima un cerro para defender el territorio circundante, con unas vistasespectaculares y numerosas construcciones de la época) y Torralba d’en Salord (con unataula muy bien conservada), así como la muralla del poblado de Son Catlar, la únicade todas las Baleares que se ha conservado íntegra. Pero, como se ha adelantado, lasopciones son inagotables.

Una opción particularmente interesante para disfrutar de la cultura de Menorca laconstituye la Red Menorca Monumental, integrada por una treintena de monumentos.Visitar los monumentos que forman parte de dicha red es conocer de primera mano lostestigos de nuestra historia; desde los yacimientos megalíticos hasta las colecciones delsiglo XX, pasando por basílicas paleocristianas y fortificaciones del siglo XVIII. Algunos deestos monumentos cuentan con proyectos museográficos que trasladan el visitante a laépoca en que fueron construidos, como es el caso del Fuerte de Marlborough o el pobladotalayótico de Torre d’en Galmés.

inorca has, since the prehistoric period, and up to the present day, stood outas a strategic meeting point for a large number of cultures thanks to its location

in the centre of the western Mediterranean. Numerous cultures have, since it wasdiscovered, coveted the Island as a refuge port. The rich historical legacy left behindby these different cultures has turned this eastern Balearic isle into a land with arich patrimony. It is for this reason that historians and archaeologists considerMinorca to be an authentic open-air museum. It seems hard to believe that such atiny island could have had such intense prehistory and history periods.

The Island houses over a thousand catalogued Megalithic monuments. The oldestarchaeological remains to be found here date back to 3,000 BC. A thousand yearslater, Minorca, inhabited at that time by hunters and fruit collectors, became astopover point on the way to the Peninsula. Following the Bronze Age, known hereas the pre-talayotic period, Minorca’s ports became frequented, especially from theperiod 1,400 to 300 BC, by the Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians.

The construction of the first “talayots” (large watch towers) marked the goldenera of the Megalithic culture. During this period, the first “navetas” (boats),constructions built in the shape of overturned boats, were constructed. These wereused at first as dwellings and later on as tombs. However, the most characteristicconstructions built during this period were, without a doubt, the “taulas” (tables),monuments made with two huge stones in the shape of a “T”. Some consider theseto be special altars used for sacrifice or the main pillar of a building whilst othersconsider that they were used for sun worship rituals. We shall probably never knowthe exact origin of these enigmatic figures.

An important part of Minorca’s magic can be found in talayotic settlements suchas Torre d’en Galmes built on top of a hill. Here visitors will find a large numberof constructions dating back to this period along with a wide variety of spectacularviews. We would also mention the Torralba d’en Salord settlement, home of a well-conserved “taula”, and the Son Catlar settlement, the Balearic Isles’ only fullyconserved settlement.

Another interesting way to discover the magic of Minorca is through the MinorcaMonument Network, a tourist network comprising some thirty odd monuments.This excellent network provides visitors with a firsthand view of local monumentsdating from the Megalithic period to the 20th century. These include, amongstothers, a number of Paleochristian basilicas and 18th century fortresses. Someof the monuments include museum areas where visitors are able to get a feel ofthe period in which the monuments were constructed. This is the case of theMarlborough Fort and the Talayotic settlement of Torre d’en Galmes.

Y no todo es arqueología. En Menorca encontramos también numerosas torres dedefensa (la de Fornells está abierta al público y reproduce la vida de una guarnición militaren el siglo XIX); grandes fortificaciones, entre las que destacan la Fortaleza de la Mola y elFuerte de Marlborough, que protegían el puerto de Maó; varios museos, como el Museode Menorca, el Ecomuseo de Cap de Cavalleria, el Museo des Bastió de Sa Font, etc.; y ungran aljibe en Es Mercadal destinado a abastecer las tropas.

FORT MARLBOROUGHSituado junto a la bocana del Puerto de Mahón, en la cala de Sant Esteve (Es Castell),

fue construido por los británicos entre 1710 y 1726. Su nombre se debe a Sir JohnChurchill, Duque de Marlborough, el general británico más destacado de la época y al quesus enemigos inmortalizaron en una canción infantil como “Mambrú”.

Casi mimetizado en el paisaje, gran parte de la fortificación está excavada en la roca. Lagalería de entrada, la galería de contraescarpa que rodea el foso y las contraminas quesalen de ésta de forma radial tenían como finalidad proteger el recinto central y sus cuatropiezas de artillería, emplazadas en plataformas semicirculares para artillería “a barbeta”.

El Fort de Marlborough soportó dos largos asedios: en 1756, el del ejército francés almando del Duque de Richelieu que arrebató la isla a los británicos y la ocupó durante sieteaños (1756-1763). Y en 1781 el ejército español capitaneado por el Duque de Crillónconquistó la isla y la devolvió temporalmente a la soberanía española.

El fuerte que hoy visitamos corresponde a la última restauración realizada por los britá-nicos en 1781. Un montaje expositivo que utiliza los medios técnicos más actuales nosinvita a hacer un viaje en el tiempo y sugiere la vida en el fuerte, los asedios que padeció yla historia de Menorca y de Europa en el siglo XVIII.

SES PEDRERES DE S’HOSTALDe las entrañas de la tierra se extrae el marés, una piedra porosa y arenisca que se usa

en Menorca como base y esencia de la arquitectura popular desde tiempos ancestrales. EnMenorca encontramos canteras singulares donde el hombre ha desafiado a la naturaleza:Binicalitx en Ferreries, Robadones en Mahón, Santa Ponça en Alaior y Alcaufar en SantLluís son algunos de los ejemplos más interesantes. Estas canteras eran los lugares dondese practicaba el arte de picar la piedra.

Visita ineludible son Ses Pedreres de s’Hostal, cerca de Ciutadella. Esta cantera ofreceuna experiencia inolvidable que permite retroceder en el tiempo. La gestión del lugar,realizada por Líthica, una asociación cultural, tiene como objetivo primordial recuperar elpatrimonio, limpiar, rehabilitar y reutilizar éste mágico recinto que fue explotado hasta1994 para la construcción. En el recorrido trazado se observan canteras manuales, conmás de doscientos años de antigüedad, y otras que empezaron a explotarse a mediados delsiglo XX con la utilización de sierras circulares.

En el recinto se encuentra también un circuito botánico que, como un jardín encantado,nos acoge bajo su sombra, una fuente, varias esculturas y un vivero con producción deplantas autóctonas.

Minorca is also home of a large number of ancient defence towers. These includethe Fornells Tower, where visitors will find an extraordinary reproduction of a 19thcentury military garrison, the Mola and Marlborough forts, built to protect theMahon Port, museums such as the Minorca Museum, the Cavalry Ecomuseum andthe Bastio de San Font Museum and a large water well, built to supply the troopswith water, located at Es Mercadal.

FORT MARLBOROUGHSituated at the mouth of the Mahon Port, on the Sant Esteve cove (Es Castell),

Fort Marlborough was built by the British between 1710 and 1726. It was namedafter Sir John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, an important British generalimmortalised by his enemies in the nursery rhyme “Mambru”.

A large part of this impressive fortress building was excavated from the rockysubsoil. The entrance, the counterscarp gallery surrounding the trench and the radialshaped countermines were all built to protect the central enclosure and the four piecesof artillery built on the semi-circular platforms normally used for “in barbette” artillery.

Fort Marlborough went through a number of devastating sieges. In 1756, it wasplaced under siege by the French army commanded by the Duke of Richelieu whotook the Island from the British and occupied it for seven years (1756-1763). In1781, the Spanish army, commanded by the Duke of Crillon, managed to conquerthe Island and give it back temporarily to the Spanish crown.

The last restoration works on this impressive building were carried out by theBritish in 1781. Its interior includes a modern audiovisual exhibition offering visitorsa view of everyday life in the fort, the different siege periods and a general look atthe history of Minorca and Europe during the 18th century.

SES PEDRERES DE S’HOSTALMinorca’s famous Mares sandstone has been considered, down through the

centuries, as the foundation of its local architecture. Visitors will find here a numberof unique sandstone quarries that include, amongst others, Binicalitx in Ferreries,Robadones in Mahon, Santa Ponça in Alaior and Alcaufar in Sant Lluis. These quarrieswere once used to practice the art of breaking rock.

The Ses Pedreres de s’Hostal rock quarry, situated close to the Ciutadella, shouldnot be missed. This spectacular quarry is guaranteed to provide visitors with anunforgettable journey into the past. It is run by the Lithica Cultural Associationwhose main objective is the rehabilitation of this magical quarry in use until 1994.During a tour of the quarry, visitors will find areas dating back two hundred yearswhen the rock would be extracted manually and others, dating back to the 20thcentury, when the rock was extracted with the help of circular saws.

A magnificent botanical route can also be found here comprising a charminggarden offering cool shady areas, a beautiful fountain, a variety of sculptures anda nursery used to cultivate different autochthonous plants.

Ses Pedreres de s’Hostal - Líthica.

This unique nature area, situated on the far eastern side of the Baetic MountainSystem, in the Segura river basin, stands out as one of Murcia’s prettiest andmost emblematic protected nature areas thanks, amongst other things, to itsunquestionable historical-cultural values and the extraordinary diversity of theflora and fauna. The Sierra Espuña Regional Nature Park has a total surfacearea of 17,804 hectares.

na de las principales características del Parque Regional de Sierra Espuña, declaradocomo tal en 1992, tras haber sido denominado Sitio Natural de Interés Nacional, en

1931, y Parque Natural, a finales de la década de los 70 del pasado siglo, es su accidentaday peculiar orografía. Está salpicada por numerosos barrancos, elevadas montañas, roquedosde difícil acceso, manantiales y fuentes de purísimas aguas... cuestión que redunda en unasobresaliente riqueza paisajística que hará las delicias de los amantes de la naturaleza,especialmente de los excursionistas más dinámicos. Éstos gozan de un abanico de posibi-lidades muy amplio para conocer la hermosura de la Sierra de Espuña recorriéndola tranqui-lamente andando, por sendas o pistas forestales, a caballo o en bicicleta.

Quienes gusten de la práctica del senderismo podrán apreciar de primera mano uncatálogo vegetal muy heterogéneo perfectamente adaptado a cada ecosistema en el que, sinánimo de efectuar un listado exhaustivo, se dan cita árboles como pinos carrascos, lariciosy negrales; encinas, arces, olmos, chopos, sauces, álamos, madroños... y plantas como,entre otras, madreselvas, rosales, zarzaparrillas, enebros, coscojas, lentiscos, sabinares desabina negra, piornos o cojines de monja, culantrillos del pozo y helechos.

Pero si la pluralidad botánica es ejemplar no lo es menos la faunística, cuestión quesuele ir estrechamente relacionada puesto que los animales encuentran en los bosques, yen la vegetación en general, el alimento y la protección indispensables para su desarrollovital como es el caso, entre los mamíferos, de las ardillas blancas, liebres, conejos, jabalíes,zorros, gatos monteses, ginetas... o, si a las aves nos referimos, de las águilas reales,gavilanes, cernícalos, azores, búhos reales, mochuelos, urracas, chovas piquirrojas, mirlos,arrendajos, piquituertos... anfibios y reptiles como culebras bastardas, víboras hocicudas,ranas verdes, salamandras... sin olvidar, dentro del grupo de invertebrados, los lepidópteros,

a Place of National Interest in 1931 and a Nature Park at the end of the 1970’s, is itsunique, rugged orography, home of numerous gullies, high mountains, rocky areaswith difficult access, springs and fountains etc. Its fascinating landscapes will delightall nature lovers, especially adventurous excursionists who will find a wide varietyof activities perfect for exploring the Sierra de Espuña. Amongst these, we wouldmention its fantastic trekking and hiking routes, horse riding routes and mountainbicycle routes.

The Sierra Espuña Regional Nature Park is home of a wide variety of heterogeneousflora perfectly adapted to each of its different ecosystems. Its numerous plant speciesinclude, amongst others, the Aleppo, Corsican and Austrian pine, oak, maple, elm,Black poplar, willow, poplar and Strawberry tree. Other types of plant species includehoneysuckle, rose, sarsaparilla, juniper, thicket, mastic, savin, Spanish broom,maidenhair fern and fern.

This magnificent flora is accompanied by a no less magnificent fauna thanks to thefood and protection offered by its previously mentioned wide variety of plant species.Visitors here will find here a large number of mammals that include the beautiful whitesquirrel, hare, rabbit, wild boar, fox, mountain cat and genet. Amongst its bird species,we would mention its important variety of birds of prey together with a large numberof smaller bird species. Worth a special mention are, amongst others, the goldeneagle, sparrow hawk, kestrel, goshawk, Eagle owl, common owl, magpie, jackdaw,robin, blackbird, Eurasian jay and crossbill. As far as its amphibians and reptiles areconcerned, we would mention the Montpellier snake, Lataste’s viper, green frog andsalamander. Finally visitors will also find a selection of invertebrates such as

the lepidopteron worth a special mention such as the Iberian endemic “Ariciamorronensis” and local “Cupido carswelli”.

The Sierra Espuña Regional Nature Park also houses an important number ofcharming towns and villages that stand out, amongst other things, for the friendlinessof their inhabitants, the wide variety of historical patrimony and, above all, the mouth-watering gastronomy with its wide range of exquisite local specialities. On-board ServiceIberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM offers its passengers a number of specially

designed menus elaborated with a wide selection of fresh regional products.The type of on-board service offered depends, in the majority of cases, on the

type of aircraft and, of course, the flight route. The menus on the Company’sinternational flights may differ from the menus on its national flights. The typeof aircraft also plays an important role in the type of menus offered. The commondenominator with regard to its menus, however, is their excellent quality.

Iberia Regional AIR NOSTRUM stands out, amongst other things, for thespecial attention it gives to its passengers transforming these into the realprotagonists of its flights. Its on-board service includes a free bar service.Passengers will, upon request, be served the drink of their choice. All drinks areaccompanied by a small packet of nuts.

Más vuelos en la ruta que une Madrid con CracoviaAIR NOSTRUM refuerza este mes la operación que enlaza Madrid con

Cracovia. A los 2 vuelos semanales (miércoles y domingos) que se operan hastaahora se va a sumar –desde el 29 de marzo– uno más todos los sábados. No esla única novedad: a partir del 24 de julio, y hasta el 6 de septiembre, se produceun nuevo incremento de frecuencias y será posible viajar 4 días a la semana:miércoles, viernes, sábado y domingo.

La conexión directa con Cracovia es la primera que AIR NOSTRUM operaentre España y Polonia y ha cosechado muy buenos índices de aceptación,según avanzó el Consejero Delegado de AIR NOSTRUM, Carlos Bertomeu, enuna conferencia de prensa celebrada en el Ayuntamiento de Cracovia y a la queasistieron Katarzyna Gadek, directora de la Oficina de Promoción Turísticade Cracovia; Filip Szatanik, representante del Presidente de Cracovia, y AgataVitoslawska, directora de la Oficina Nacional de Turismo de Polonia en España.

Con este vuelo se cubre una amplia región en expansión en Polonia queincluye Cracovia, Katowice y su área de influencia. AIR NOSTRUM consideraque un factor clave de este éxito obtenido en la ruta entre Cracovia y Madrid sonlas 43 conexiones que ofrece a través de Madrid, con la red mundial de vuelosde Iberia y la Alianza Oneworld.

New flight frequencies on the Madrid-Krakow flight routeAIR NOSTRUM will, this month, be reinforcing its flight operations

between Madrid and Krakow. As of 29th March, a new weekly Saturday flightwill be added to the two weekly (Wednesday and Sunday) flights already onoffer. The Company has also announced that, as of 24th July and up to 6thSeptember, further flight frequencies will be introduced providing passengerswith a total of four weekly flights (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

The Air Nostrum Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Carlos Bertomeu, announcedduring a press conference held at the Krakow Town Hall with the participationof Ms. Katarzyna Gadek, Director of the Krakow Tourist Office, Mr. FilipSzatanik, representing Professor J. Majchrowski, the President of Krakow,and Ms. Agata Vitoslawska, Director of the Polish Tourist Office in Spainthat AIR NOSTRUM’s first direct flight route between Spain and Poland isenjoying a high rate of success.

This new flight route covers a large expansion area that includes Krakow,Katowice and surrounding areas. AIR NOSTRUM considers that one ofthe key factors in the success of the new Krakow-Madrid flight route arethe 43 connections provided by the Iberia Worldwide and Oneworld AirlineAlliance flight networks.
